1997 Hyundai Tiburon problems

The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.
The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.
The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

I WOULD LIKE A TRANSMISSION THAT WORKS THE ENGINE AND ALL OTHER PARTS OF CAR ARE IN GOOD CONDITION. CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY. NOW DEALERSHIP IS TRYING TO TELL ME THAT THE TRANSMISSION SLIP IS JUST THE WAY IT 'SMOOTHES' INTO THE NEXT GEAR. EVEN MY PASSENGERS COMMENT ON THE WAY THE CAR THE SHIFTS. I HAVE BEEN INCONVIENCED FOR AT LEAST A DAY OR MORE TO FIND ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION SO THAT THEY CAN INSTALL REBUILT TRANSMISSIONS. SOME OF THE SERVICE PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THAT HYUNDIA HAS GREAT DIFFICULTY REBUILDING TRANSMISSIONS. THE HUYNDAI REPRESETATIVE WILL NOT ALLOW THEM TO INSTALL A NEW TRANSMISSION. ALL TRANSMISSIONS ARE GIVING OUT BEFORE THEIR 12,000 WARRENTY EXPIRES. ALL REPALCEMENTS HAVE BEEN IN THE PAST TWO YEARS. I HAVE BEEN SATISFIED WITH THEIR HONORING THE WARRENTY. MY LAST SERVICE CALL THE MANAGER KEN BEARD TOLD ME HE WOULD AGAIN CONTACT HUYNDAI AND ASK ABOUT TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT AND CONTACT ME BUT THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED IN 3 WEEKS. I HAVE CONTACTE DTHE OWNER AND HIS CONTROLLER FRENCHETTA THOMPSON HAS ASSURED ME THAT HE WILL RETURN MY CALL THIS WEEK. I ONLY OWN ONE CAR AND I NEED TO BE ABLE TO DEPEND ON IT TO GET TO WORK, THERE IS NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE. EVEN WHEN ASKED THE DEALER REFUSES TO LET ME USE A LOANER CAR. ANY HELP YOU CAN OFFER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I HAVE READ AN ARTICLE IN A CAR MAGAZINE STATING THAT HUYNDAI MADE MUCH NEEDED IMPROVEMENTS TO THEIR 2003 TRANSMISSION.*AK

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

- VIN: KMHJG34F5VU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: I HAVE HAD THIS CAR BACK TO THE DEALER FOR THIS PROBLEM 5 TIMES. THEY HAVE REPLACED A PULSE GENERATOR SENSOR, HOWEVER, THE PART ONLY LAST ANYWHERE FROM 4 TO 7 MONTHS. THE LAST TIME I TOOK THE CAR IN THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT NEEDED A SPEED SENSOR OUTPUT. THEY ARE WILLING TO REPLACE THAT PART UNDER THE WARRANTY, HOWEVER, THEY INFORMED ME THAT I MUST PAY THE LABOR WHICH WILL RUN ABOUT $95. I DO NOT FEEL THAT I SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR THIS AMOUNT SINCE I HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS PROBLEM SINCE JUNE, 1999 WHEN THE CAR HAD 40,978 MILES ON IT. I ALSO TOOK THE CAR IN ON FEBRUARY 24, 1999 AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEPT CAME ON INTERMITTENTLY FOR TWO DAYS. AT THAT TIME THEY REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE SWITCH. THE LAST 5 VISITS HAVE BEEN BECAUSE THE CAR WILL NOT SHIFT WHEN I AM GOING ABOUT 25 MPH. THE ENGINE WILL REV AND THEN FIANLLY IT WILL SHIFT VERY HARD. IT WILL ALSO DOWNSHIFT VERY HARD WHEN I AM COMING TO A STOP. THE LAST TIME I TOOK THE CAR IN THEY TOLD ME THAT HAD TO ORDER A PART AND IT WOULD TAKE A FEW DAYS TO GET IT IN SO I WENT AHEAD AND DROVE IT UNTIL THE PART CAME IN. DURING THAT TIME THE CAR SEEMED TO LOSE ACCERLATION WHEN STARTING UP THEN FINALLY IT WOULD "KICK" IN AND TAKE OFF. WHEN I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER IF THIS WAS RELATED TO THE SAME PROBLEM I WAS TOLD PROBABLY. I FEEL THAT THIS PART SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BACK IN FEBRUARY OR AT LEAST JUNE OF 1999 AND I SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD TO KEEP TAKING THE CAR BACK FOR THE SAME PROBLEM ON AUGUST 4, 1999 WITH 45,723 MILES ON IT AND AGAIN ON MARCH 24, 2000 WITH 57,332 ON IT AND AGAIN ON AUGUST 30, 2000 WITH 68,899 AT WHICH TIME THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WERE ORDERING THE PART. I TOOK IT BACK ON SEPTEMBER 28, 2000 AND WAS TOLD AT THAT TIME THAT IT NEEDED THE SPEED OUTPUT SENSOR (WHICH IS THE PART THAT I THOUGHT WAS BEING ORDERED AND HAD ARRIVED). SO I AGAIN PICKED UP MY CAR UNREPAIRED AND AM NOW WAITING FOR THE PART TO COME IN. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU. CAROL SUMMERS. *AK

- VIN: KMHJG24M6VU
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: THIS MODEL VEHICLE HAS HAD 2 RECALLS ISSUES BOTH RELATED TO THE GAS TANK. PRIOR TO THE RECALLS BEING ISSUED I HAD A SEAL SOMEWHERE IN THE GAS TANK REPLACED BECAUSE WHEN I FILLED THE TANK ALL THE WAY GAS CAME OUT THE BOTTOM. I COULD SMELL THE FUMES OF GAS THEN TOO. I REPLACED THE GAS CAP WITH THE FIRST SAFTY RECALL. I STILL SMELLED GAS AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO BE CHECKED FOR THE RECALL. THEY REPACED THE FUEL CAP AGAIN AND RETURNED THE CAR TO ME SAYING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS BECAUSE IT NEEDED 30,000 MILE MAINTENCE. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO SMELL OF GAS INSIDE. ABOUT TWO WEEKS AFTER I TOOK THE CAR BACK FOR THE FIRST RECALL. I RECEIVED ANOTHER RECALL IN THE MAIL. I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY FINALLY REPLACED THE FUEL TANK THAT HAD APROX. A 5 INCH CRACK IN THE SEAM AT THE TOP. I BELIEVE THE VEHICLE HAD A CRACK THE LAST TIME I TOOK IT IN. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT. IT STATES IN THE LAST RECALL THAT THE CAR CAN CATCH ON FIRE. I DON'T THINK THE DEARLERS ARE TAKING THIS SERIOUS. THE FUMES THAT BUILD UP INSIDE THE CAR FORCED ME PUT PUT BOTH THE WINDOWS DOWN.*AK

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 1997 Hyundai Tiburon.
- Manufacturer: HYUNDAI MOTOR COMPANY
- Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:WEBBING
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THE DRIVER AND FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELTS MAY NOT EXTEND AND RETRACT SMOOTHLY THROUGH THE D-RING GUIDES MOUNTED ON THE BODY PILLARS AFT OF THE DOORS. IF THE SEAT BELTS DO NOT EXTEND AND RETRACT SMOOTHLY, THEY MAY TWIST IN THE D-RING GUIDES AND MAKE IT INCONVENIENT TO EXTEND AND RETRACT THE SEAT BELTS.
- Consequence: IF THE SEAT BELTS ARE INCONVENIENT TO USE, THE SEAT OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE INCLINED TO WEAR THE SEAT BELTS PROPERLY, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A STOPPER OVER EACH FRONT SEAT BELT D-RING GUIDE TO ASSIST THE SEAT BELT TO SMOOTHLY EXTEND AND RETRACT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 10, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT HYUNDAI AT 1-800-633-5151.

I've always been a Hyundai fan, owning 5 new ones and many used. I bought this Tiburon at an auction with 150,000 miles on it, and now it has 166,000 miles on it. I'm happy to say that I've never had a single problem with it, and everyone comments on how great it looks. The mileage is fantastic, and I wouldn't hesitate to take it anywhere. I can confidently say that I'll never buy anything other than a Hyundai.
-
The best car I have ever had. No trouble at all.
-
The Tiburon is such a great car! It's definitely an eye-catcher. So far, my '97 Tiburon has over 140,000 miles and I haven't had any major problems yet.
-
The 1997 Tiburon FX is a fantastic little car! Don't let the editor's negative comments fool you - put it up against a Civic or a NA Eclipse (which cost about the same or more) and see for yourself. One of the best things about this car is its stylish design. While it may be held back by its emission/sound pollution control devices, with some great maintenance, this car will go the distance. In fact, I've seen real dyno gains of up to 15hp just from a cold air intake (the stock intake is so small you couldn't even fit a dime in vertically), and 8hp from a catback exhaust system. Plus, who wants to look like everyone else on the road? This car is sure to turn heads!
-
This car is really a blast to drive! The 0-100 acceleration in less than 10 seconds makes it a really fun car to drive. I even got it to 0-100 in a little less than 8 seconds downhill yesterday. Awesome! I wonder if it's a turbo convertible. And the 185kmph in 4th gear... love it! I wonder what the max speed is. :)

I have been driving my car for 5 years now, and it has covered 70k miles. Unfortunately, I have had to spend over 3k on major parts in the last year alone. I had to replace the 5 spd transmission for $1200, water pump twice for $510, struts for $269, alternator for $269, and also had to do exhaust work, replace oxygen sensor for $160, fix AC problems, tail light wiring problems for $200, fix a cracked radiator, headlight wiring problems, and replace half shafts for $300, among other things. However, I must admit that the car was dependable until it reached about 127k.

This car next to me has a new engine, which has been running very well after experiencing some overheating problems with the previous engine. I have noticed some shaking when reaching speeds of 80-90, but it could just be my car. Overall, it is a very fun car to drive. It is important to note that Hyundai used to be one of the cheapest cars on the road, but this car has put good thoughts in my head about their brand. Although the pick-up performance is not the best, the car has a lot of potential. I would recommend a cold air intake to improve the speed. With a little upgrade, this car could be even better.

I purchased this car used in 2000 and owned it for a decade before it began to experience issues at 98k miles. Overall, it's a decent car with good handling that feels a bit sporty. However, it lacks power and acceleration. The car's horsepower is lower than the 130 listed by Edmund's, and I even received a notice of a class action lawsuit against Hyundai for misreporting the HP of the FX while I owned it. While it only required one or two major repairs before 98k, a lot went wrong all at once, costing me $2750. On the plus side, it handles decently in snow and doesn't have many rust issues. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is poor for a car with such little power, as I was only getting 25 mpg (half city, half highway).
Keith Sauer 2024-03-08
This is a demo that I purchased in '98 with only 1,120 miles on it. I absolutely love it! Over the past 7 years, I've had to repaint it due to fading paint, replace the clutch pin after it jammed and left me in 2nd gear, and fix the wiring to the turn signals after it shorted out. While this may seem like a lot, it's important to consider the age of the car and the reputation of Hyundai. Plus, it currently has 112k miles on it and is still going strong! Overall, it's a great car that's both fun to drive and dependable!
Jamar Goldner 2024-01-21
I've been the proud owner of this car for a few months now. After some expensive 60,000 mile repairs, the car seemed to run perfectly. I must say, the design is quite impressive for a Hyundai, and out of all the cars in that price range, this one has been rather enjoyable. I have noticed a few issues with the transmission, as it felt like the car was shifted into park while I was driving. But other than that, it's been a dream. As a taller guy, standing at 6'4, I fit in this car very comfortably, as long as no one is in the back. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase.
