2010 Hyundai Sonata problems
The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common 2010 Hyundai Sonata problems
The 2010 Hyundai Sonata is known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is broken door handles, especially the exterior door handles that attach to the car. This problem typically occurs around 80,000 miles and can cost around $200 to replace.
Another common issue is peeling paint, which is reported by owners within the first 100,000 miles. This problem is often caused by improper care of the paint, leading to chipping and peeling. Repainting the affected areas can cost about $1,000 per panel.
Additionally, some 2010 Hyundai Sonatas experience problems with the starter motor, which wears out as the car ages. Replacing the entire assembly costs around $400.
There are also two recalls for the 2010 Hyundai Sonata, one covering the stop lamp switch and the other addressing a suspension crossmember that can rust and increase the risk of an accident if it breaks.
Despite these common issues, the 2010 Hyundai Sonata has a reputation for reliability and is often recommended by owners for its value, build quality, exterior and interior features, performance, comfort, styling, and fun driving experience.
The car's performance is considered good, with a base engine that is an average 2.4L-4-cylinder with 175 horsepower, which gets up to 25 MPG combined. An available upgrade is the powerful 3.3L V6, which makes 249 horsepower and gets up to 22 MPG combined.
The 2010 Hyundai Sonata is also known for its spacious cabin and generous cargo space, making it a popular choice for families and those who need a reliable and practical vehicle.
In terms of longevity, the 2010 Hyundai Sonata is expected to last over 250,000 miles, similar to other midsize sedans like the Mazda6. Regular annual maintenance costs are close to other sedans as well, at $446 per year.
Overall, while the 2010 Hyundai Sonata has some common issues, it is generally considered a reliable and practical vehicle that offers good performance, comfort, and value for its price.
What is the common problem of Hyundai Sonata?
Old and new Sonata model years had similar issues with their timing chain tensioner, which produced rattling noises upon engine startup. Many owners also reported a broken timing belt, which damaged the crankshaft position sensor.
How many miles will a 2010 Hyundai Sonata last?
200,000 to 250,000 miles
When it comes to longevity, the Sonata is estimated to last 200,000 to 250,000 miles or 13 to 17 years with regular maintenance. It also has a better reliability rating and lower annual repair cost than most other midsize cars.
What was a bad year for Hyundai Sonata?
A Hyundai Sonata engine failure lawsuit accuses Hyundai of manufacturing defective engines in model year 2011-2012 Sonatas. The plaintiff alleges Hyundai knew when the connecting rod bearings start to fail, metal debris from the bearings is sent throughout the engine through contaminated engine oil.
Is Hyundai Sonata high maintenance?
A Hyundai Sonata will cost about $5,998 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for popular sedan models by $1,098. There is also a 17.73% chance that a Sonata will require a major repair during that time.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-28
- VIN: 5NPET4AC5AH
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The plastic housing of the brake lights have turned black. I'm on my second set that I got at wrecking yard. The plastic doesn't hold up to the heat of the tail/brake light. I saw other cars like mine with same problem at the wrecking yard. And my ground wire to my radiator fan burned out as well during COVID. I think Hyundai used cheap plastic that can't hold up to the heat. My dash cracked really bad as well. All over. I saw the same cracked dashes of other car in wrecking yards. They know they had a plastic defect and they changed body styles the next year. My door handles brake off in my hands and the a/c vent broke twice. They have hazzard car because all of this happened early when I purchased the car. And my car has Hyundai and Kia parts old body style 2010 bought end of 2009. Theta 2 engine. All of the recalls but they leave my car out. And that stop brake switch light has broken so many times. Replaced free only 1 time by dealership. Other times I had to pay for. Cheap plastic. If I need repair by dealership , I have to leave car on their lot for 6weeks for them to look at. Not appointment. Leave my car on lot until it's my cars turn. And my car just quit running once while driving in my apartment complex. It also quit running driving down the highway.. everything shutting off and lights turned on dash. The battery light was on first, then the check engine , abs, and all lights coming on. I tried to turn on my hazards but everything was failing. I was lucky I wasn't hit by other highway traffic. My headlights went off or really dim. I was allowed to drive really slow to a roach hotel just there on interstate. I was told it was my alternator. But I think it was something else that caused failure. I did have my car professionally washed, that day. (Hardly do that). And the week before it was at Hyundai shop for retinting of windows which my battery was dead in their dusty lot when pickup. That brake light switch lamp stopper was broken and laying in floor l
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17
- VIN: 5NPET4AC5AH
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: I purchased a 2010 Hyundai Sonata in February 2022 from the original owner. In July of this year, my engine failed due to the oil consumption defect found in many of Hyundai's engines produced at the Alabama factory. My oil and check engine light came on before it was time for my following oil change, despite making on-time synthetic oil changes during ownership. The vehicle hesitated and jerked on my commute to work, potentially causing harm to myself and other motorists. I went to take my vehicle to the mechanic on my lunch break. The car failed to turn over and has been inoperable ever since. I need my engine replaced at no charge. It's unconscionable that corporate would turn me away because the engine has 146k miles, which is nowhere near the industry standard 200k. Hyundai has inspected the vehicle and confirmed that an engine replacement is needed.

POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-26
- VIN: 5NPEU4AF1AH
- Components: POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I am contacting the NHTSA regarding a manufacturer's failure to comply with a NHTSA recall campaign. The campaign in question is #13V113000 for a 2010 Hyundai Sonata. The certified Hyundai service center claimed, verbally and on the customer invoice, to have replaced the stop lamp switch with a new OEM part, number 93810-4DR0A-QQH, per the recall's order. After supposedly replacing the defective part, the vehicle is still able to be shifted out of Park without first depressing the brake pedal. This happens with the key in the 'ON' position, 'Accessory' position, and even without the key in the ignition at all. No depression of the brake pedal is currently required to shift the vehicle, in any form, violating the recall's correction order. After contacting Hyundai Motor Company, they informed me via phone and email that because the car is "so old" and "out of warranty", I would remain financially liable for diagnosing and repair of any problems related to NHTSA Campaign #13V113000. Based on the fact my vehicle's current and ongoing issue is EXPLICITLY clarified in the details of Campaign #13V113000, I believe it remains Hyundai's responsibility to ensure the vehicle is safe to operate. Furthermore, Hyundai has seemingly, knowingly and willfully threatened my safety, safety of passengers, and that of the general public by refusing to thoroughly comply with a NHTSA Campaign. This subsequently places the person(s) listed above at risk of injury or even death due to Hyundai Motor Company's negligence. I hope that by reaching out to the NHTSA about this ongoing issue, the problem can be resolved respectfully, as the next course of action and final recourse, with regards to Hyundai Motor Company, may result in legal escalation. Thank you.

- Summary: REAR PASSENGER DOOR HANDLE (EXTERIOR) BROKEN - FEBRUARY 2020. ALL 4 DOOR HANDLES HAVE BROKEN ON THIS CAR BETWEEN 2015-2020! HYUNDAI PAID FOR THE FIRST 1 BUT FOR THE 2ND AND 3RD TOLD ME, ESSENTIALLY, "TOO BAD, DOOR HANDLES BREAK." APPARENTLY THEY DO ON 2010 HYUNDAI SONATA'S AS THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE AND ALL 4 DOOR HANDLES BROKE ON MY CAR. THAT IS RIDICULOUS. I EXPECT HYUNDAI TO COVER THIS ONE. THE CAR HAS 66K MILES ON IT. IT DOES NOT GET HEAVY USE. THE FIRST 5 YEARS, I TOOK PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION TO WORK, THEN STARTED WORKING FROM HOME. THERE IS NO REASON FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE HANDLES TO BREAK. THE DRIVER'S DOOR HANDLE GOT NORMAL USE; NOTHING EXCESSIVE OR UNUSUAL.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-18
- VIN: 5NPET4AC6AH
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I PURCHASED THE CAR IN FEBRUARY 2016 AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY 1 DOOR HANDLE CAME OFF, SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD 1 MORE TO COME OFF AND 1 IS JUST HANGING ON SO I DO NOT TOUCH IT. UNFORTUNATELY THAT IS THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR. I AM CONSTANTLY CLIMBING OVER MY SEATS OR ATTEMPTING TO OPEN FROM ANOTHER DOOR JUST TO GET INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND ESPECIALLY FRUSTRATING WHEN I HAVE MY GRANDCHILDREN CAR SEATS IN THE BACK. I CAN NOT AFFORD TO KEEP REPLACING DOOR HANDLES AND THE ONLY ONES AVAILABLE DO NOT MATCH CAR COLOR. AFTER SEARCHING I SEE THAT THIS WAS A PROBLEM BEFORE I PURCHASED MY CAR. I CAN NOT HONESTLY RECOMMEND THIS VEHICLE TO ANYONE FOR THE FACT THAT YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO GET INSIDE JUST TO TEST DRIVE AND THE DOOR HANDLE MIGHT POSSIBLY COME OFF. THE CAR RUNS FINE BUT I WOULD LIKE IMMEDIATE REPLACEMENTS FOR DOOR HANDLES SO THAT I CAN GET INSIDE THE CAR CORRECTLY AND WITHOUT HAVING TO CLIMB OVER OTHER SEATS ESPECIALLY IN THE RAIN. *TR
2010 Hyundai Sonata recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2010 Hyundai Sonata.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
- Summary: Hyundai is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Sonata vehicles manufactured March 1, 2005, through January 21, 2010; and model year 2006-2011 Azera vehicles manufactured September 27, 2005, through November 22, 2010 originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Road salt and water can enter portions of the rear crossmember, leading to corrosion of the crossmember steel. This may lead to detachment of one of the rear control arms.
- Consequence: Control arm separation may suddenly change the rear wheel alignment, affecting the handling of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will repair or replace the crossmember assembly. The recall began on October 8, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai Customer Care Center at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall number is 113.
- Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
- Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

I went to the Toyota dealership with every intention of buying a Camry, having had one for 10 years. I had already checked out the Sonata previously. After test driving the Camry, I came away convinced the Sonata was the way to go. Everything from the size of the trunk, the cloth on the seats, the style of the dash and the room in the back seat were superior on the Sonata. So, I left a very good deal on the Camry and bought the Sonata and haven't regretted it yet. I took a 500 mile round trip already and got 32+ mpg. The ease of use of the controls and their placement is a big plus. The car is tight and fun to drive. The great acceleration from the 4-cyl engine is impressive. I was hesitant to go Hyundai, but I'm glad I did. Don't hesitate to go for it!

I've been a loyal Honda and Acura customer for many years, but unfortunately, I had some bad experiences with the transmissions in my Accord and Odyssey. Despite having to replace them four times, I was met with a less than friendly attitude when I raised my concerns. As a result, I made the difficult decision to switch to a different brand. After test driving several cars, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Hyundai Sonata was the perfect fit for me. Although I never thought I would consider a Hyundai, I've now had it for a week and I'm still in love with it. It's a great value and gets up to 29 MPG in mixed driving.
-
This is definitely the best car Hyundai has put out in its class. It's really quiet inside, has a super smooth ride, and is incredibly roomy. You definitely get a lot for your money!
-
I test drove the Toyota Camry, but despite its $6000 higher cost and recent reputation hits, I decided not to buy it. Instead, I found a car that truly surpassed the Camry in every way. It has all the latest safety features, including airbags, traction control, and side airbags, and gets 27 mpg around town. The brakes are great and the car is easy to get in and out of. Almost everything is standard, including XM radio, comfortable seats, plenty of room, and an enormous trunk. We absolutely love this car - it's the best Sonata yet. Plus, getting it at dealer invoice and with a $2500 rebate just made it even sweeter!
-
Just completed a 2000 mile trip to Kansas from Georgia. I'm so glad to hear that the car was very comfortable, handled the rough interstates well, averaged 33 mpg, and held all of your luggage easily. Although I understand that you miss the room from your previous mini-van, it's great to hear that the car's performance far exceeds the trade-off for room.

The mileage of the car may drop significantly. Additionally, the door handles may snap in cold temperatures, which could be costly for the consumer as they are not covered.

I own a 2010 Hyundai Sonata and have experienced multiple issues with the car door handles breaking off. Despite this being a recurring problem, Hyundai has refused to cover the cost of repairs. It is disappointing to see that they have not taken responsibility for this issue, especially considering the numerous reviews highlighting the same problem. Based on my personal experience and that of my son, who has also faced multiple issues with his 2008 Sonata, including problems with the alternator, I cannot recommend purchasing a Hyundai vehicle.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car, which I've had since March of 2010. For the most part, it's been trouble-free, but there are a few quirks that have made me consider turning it in. I have a long commute of 82 miles a day, and I've put 61K miles on the car so far. The first 30K miles were great, but then I started experiencing some issues. The fuel tank wouldn't take gas, which was frustrating, and it took the dealer a month to resolve the issue. Then, the transmission started thumping, which was concerning. The dealer did a reset twice and replaced the fluid, but unfortunately, the thumping started again at 59K. The dealer has assured me that they will replace the transmission if they find the condition again, but the problem is that the thumping comes and goes, and it's hard to replicate the issue when I take it to the dealer. Overall, I still enjoy my car, but I wanted to share my experience with you. Thanks for listening!

In 2010, we purchased a Hyundai Sonata, but unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the interior catches and outside door handles. They were made of cheap plastic and broke easily. It was quite frustrating to deal with. However, we decided to trade it in for a Honda Civic from Westbrook Honda in Connecticut, which has been great so far. We highly recommend it! Thank you for reading.

My Sonata had been running smoothly for 8 months until last week when it suddenly shut down while I was driving at 65 mph on the highway. Unfortunately, I was rear-ended while waiting for assistance. After having the car inspected, the dealer informed me that the battery cable connection was loose, which may have caused the issue. As the battery is charged just before the car is handed over to the buyer, it is unlikely that any maintenance work would have been done on the cable during the 8 months I owned the car. Despite this, the dealer has refused to take responsibility for the issue. However, I am confident that the cause of the problem was due to a dealer error. It is concerning that such negligence could have put my life at risk.
