The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.

The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.

The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

  • Report Received Date: 2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Latest negative Hyundai Tiburon car reviews

  1. Zackary Hermiston 2025-05-06

    Vehicle year: 2003

My spouse and I purchased a 6-cylinder, 5-speed Tibby and we absolutely adore it! It has ample power for city driving. Let's be honest, where do regular folks get to use 250 or 300 horsepower anyway? The 170ish horsepower that comes out of the box is practical yet still enjoyable. I would recommend going with the 17-inch wheels as they look cooler and help to stiffen the ride a bit. Otherwise, the car has great standard features and the exterior design is better than the RSX and not as quirky as the Celica. For the price, I believe the Tib fills a gap between dull status symbols (RSX), overpriced and underpowered cliches (Eclipse), and overdone impractical cars (Celica).

  2. Jeff Gerhold 2025-04-23

    Vehicle year: 2005

I've been the proud owner of this moonlit blue Tiburon for 10 months now and I'm happy to report that I haven't encountered any major issues with the vehicle. The 360 watt Infinity CD stereo system is fantastic and really adds to the overall driving experience. While I'm considering upgrading to a Mitsubishi Eclipse, I'm still on the fence as the Tiburon has a bit more leg room, which is important to me as a 6' tall driver. I'll definitely have to test drive the Eclipse and see how it feels. The pleather interior of the Tiburon is stylish and comfortable, but for the price, there may be better options out there. Overall, the Tiburon has been a reliable car with decent 160lbs of torque, but the 260lbs of the Eclipse is certainly tempting.

This car can be a lot of fun to drive, but it may not be the best choice if you're on a tight budget. I purchased one with 99k miles and have since put 25k more on it. During that time, I've had to replace all the tires twice, the clutch twice, the shifter cable twice, and even the transmission and flywheel. It's worth noting that Tiburons made after 2003 may not be the most reliable. Additionally, any transmission repairs (such as the clutch, shifter cable, or flywheel) can be more expensive than with other cars due to the extra work required to access the transmission in a Tiburon.

I purchased the car new and have only driven 28,000 miles in the past 6 years. Unfortunately, during this time, I have experienced some issues with the car such as a broken moon roof, inoperative driver window, and broken plastic door handles. Additionally, the paint has faded in several areas both inside and out. Recently, I have been having trouble filling up the gas tank due to issues with the charcoal canister, close valve, and filter canister. The cost of replacing these parts is around $600.00, but the dealership was unsure of the exact price. Despite contacting the home office, I was unable to find a solution to these issues. While I have enjoyed my time with this car, I have decided that this will be the last Hyundai I purchase as I am looking for a more reliable option.

I've been the proud owner of this car for a few months now. After some expensive 60,000 mile repairs, the car seemed to run perfectly. I must say, the design is quite impressive for a Hyundai, and out of all the cars in that price range, this one has been rather enjoyable. I have noticed a few issues with the transmission, as it felt like the car was shifted into park while I was driving. But other than that, it's been a dream. As a taller guy, standing at 6'4, I fit in this car very comfortably, as long as no one is in the back. Overall, I'm quite pleased with my purchase.

"Yeah right.. a HYUNDAI.." or at least that's what I thought when I was ready to buy a new car. My Ford died at 84,000 miles so I traded it in for $4,000 looking at the Civic Si, Eclipse, WRX, tC, RSX, and a few others. Loved my stepsister's 06 Sonata so decided to give Hyundai a try. I never thought I'd own a Korean car, but this one is perfect. My car had to have auto climate, V6 (or similar) refinement, leather, moon roof, and premium sound. That pretty much knocked everything out but the Tiburon, Eclipse, and RSX. Minor complaints, but no regrets. This was the best car by far. Firm but not harsh, comfortable but not boring, feels like our 06 C280 in terms of driving feel. Love it.

This is my second Tib--previously owned a 2003 GT. I'm happy to say that I haven't had any problems with it. It's a really fun car to drive and I got it at a great price.

I bought my Tiburon GT brand new in 2004. Unfortunately, on the second day of purchase, the driver's window motor gave out. Thankfully, the warranty covered the cost. I also experienced a fuel return hose rupture, which caused fuel to spray everywhere due to the use of cheap hoses by Hyundai. Fortunately, nothing caught on fire, but I have read that this is a common issue. It's worth noting that the engine is very sensitive to modifications and can cause bad MAF and O2 readings. Although I loved the car because it was my first new car ever, I had way too many problems with it. I sold it at 55k miles due to electrical and engine problems. It's important to use OEM oil filters, or the internal HLA's will click. The 2.7L V6 is considered to be Hyundai's worst engine. However, their new engines are much better since they are not Mitsubishi-built.

I purchased my car with 5000 miles on it and drove it for 38,000 miles. Unfortunately, I had to sell it because it was not practical for my growing family. The back seat was too small to fit a baby seat comfortably. Although I was hoping for a peppy sports car, I was a bit disappointed. However, it was still an upgrade from my previous Saturn. The car was reliable, handled well, had a nice ride, and was comfortable. The only downside was that it only got around 23mpg on the highway, which made it less cost-effective.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 05 Hyundai Tiburon GT Ultimate Sports Package with sunroof and Infinity Sound system. When I first bought it, it had 13,000 miles on it, and now it has 40,000. I absolutely love the pick-up and the mild roar through the muffler. The looks are stunning, and everyone who sees my car for the first time loves it! The comfort for the driver and passenger is good, but unfortunately, there isn't enough space for big and tall people in the back. I'd call it a two-seater. The trunk space is ample, and it's even better if the back seats are put down. The suspension is a bit stiff, so you'll feel all the potholes, but it's still a great ride. The only problem I've had so far is the car pulling towards the right because of alignment issues. Also, when I jumped my car battery last winter, the sound system got damaged. Overall, I'm really happy with my car and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a stylish and fun ride!
