2005 Hyundai Tiburon problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.

The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.

The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

Common 2005 Hyundai Tiburon problems

The Hyundai Tiburon, produced from 1996 to 2008, is known for its stylish design and pleasant cruising experience. However, like any car, it has its share of common problems, particularly in its 2005 model year. The following are some of the most frequently reported issues by owners of the 2005 Hyundai Tiburon

  • Timing belt failure: The 2005 Hyundai Tiburon has a timing belt-driven engine, which is prone to sudden failure. This can result in severe engine damage as it is an interference engine. The timing belt should be replaced every 60,000 miles or 100,000 kilometers to prevent this issue .
  • Sensor malfunctions: Various sensors in the 2005 Tiburon, such as the O2 sensors, throttle position sensor, oil pressure sensor, and MAF sensor, are known to fail over time. These failures can lead to poor engine performance, decreased fuel efficiency, and even engine damage. Regular maintenance and timely replacement of these sensors can help avoid these problems .
  • Fuel pump and fuel filter issues: The fuel pump and fuel filter are located under the rear seats and can cause problems in the 2005 Tiburon. Symptoms include a rich fuel mixture, gas smell during cold starts, and lack of power. While some sources claim that these components last the life of the car, many owners report needing to replace them .
  • Plastic parts deterioration: As the 2005 Tiburon ages, plastic parts can become brittle and dislodge, causing rattling noises and other issues. This includes plastic pieces around the sunroof, which can lead to hesitation or difficulty opening and closing the sunroof .
  • Clutch problems: The clutch is another common issue in the 2005 Hyundai Tiburon. Complaints include slipping, going out, and wearing out, particularly in manual transmission models. These issues can lead to expensive repairs and should be addressed promptly.

These common problems in the 2005 Hyundai Tiburon are primarily related to the age and mileage of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate these issues and ensure a more reliable driving experience.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-10
  • VIN: KMHHN65F85U
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: AROUND 70,000 MILES ON MY 2005 HYUNDAI TIBURON, MY MECHANIC FRIEND NOTICED THAT THE PROBLEM I WAS NEEDING A NEW CLUTCH. WE PURCHASED A CLUTCH KIT FROM DURALAST/ZOOM MANUFACTURED THESE PARTS. THE CLUTCH CHANGE IN A HYUNDAI TIBURON IS PRETTY EXPENSIVE AND $1025 WAS THE CHEAPEST I WAS QUOTED. THE CAR SEEMED TO BE RUNNING FINE FOR THREE DAYS AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY CLUTCH PEDAL HAD NO RESISTANCE AGAINST IT WHILE I WAS DRIVING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION AND WOULD ONLY SHIFT IF I "HARD SHIFTED" THE CLUTCH OR IF I PRESSED DOWN ON THE CLUTCH PEDAL AS HARD AS I COULD. LUCKILY, THE PEOPLE DRIVING SOUTHBOUND WHILE I TURNED INTO THEIR LANE HAD NARROWLY SWERVED AROUND MY CAR. I COULD ONLY IMAGINE IF THEIR WAS A DIFFERENT VEHICLE COMING SINCE I JUST SO HAPPENED TO BE BABYSITTING MY FRIENDS DAUGHTER THAT DAY! WHEN I TOOK MY VEHICLE JUST UP THE ROAD TO THE LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER, THEY TOLD ME THE PART WAS "MISLABELED" AND IN THE PROCESS THE CLUTCH WAS PLACED IN THE CAR BACKWARDS. THIS "MISLABELED" CLUTCH IN TURN DAMAGED THE FLYWHEEL, MASTER CYLINDER, AND SLAVE CYLINDER AND I HAD TO PAY $3000 MORE TO GET MY CAR FIXED. AUTO ZONE AND THE HYUNDAI DEALER BOTH TOLD ME TO TALK TO THE MANUFACTURER SINCE THE PART IS "DEFECTIVE". FINALLY, AROUND 6 MONTHS LATER OF CONSTANT PHONE CALLS, I GET A HOLD OF THE RIGHT PEOPLE THROUGH ZOOM MANUFACTURING. THEY OFFERED ME A CHECK FOR $253. WHEN I TALKED TO THE MANUFACTURER ABOUT THIS DILEMMA, HE TOLD ME THAT THIS IS ALL THEY CAN DO AND "WE HAVE HONORED THE CLAIM WITHIN THE TERMS AND POLICY WITH OUR CUSTOMER." REGARDLESS OF ZOOM MANUFACTURER'S TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE, I WANT TO JUST MAKE SURE THAT THESE PARTS ARE NO LONGER SOLD TO THE POPULATION. I ASKED MANY PEOPLE IN THEIR DEPARTMENT IF THE PART WAS RECALLED SO THIS DIDN'T HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE AND NO ONE GAVE ME AN ANSWER. ALSO, MY CAR IS NOW AT 82,000 MILES AND THE CLUTCH IS ALREADY SLIPPING. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • VIN: KMHHM65D35U
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I STARTED MY CAR AT APPROXIMATELY 8 A.M. ON 6/26/13 TO GO TO WORK. ONE SECOND AFTER THE ENGINE FIRED, THE STEERING WHEEL AIRBAG BLEW UP IN MY FACE. I HAVE NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT IN THIS CAR. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AT THE TIME AND ON MY PROPERTY WITH NO EVIDENCE OF ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. AFTER SOME TROUBLESOME NEGOTIATIONS, HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA AGREED TO MAKE A "ONE-TIME GOODWILL REPAIR" OF THE VEHICLE'S AIRBAG COMPONENTS IN EXCHANGE FOR SIGNING MY LIFE AWAY REGARDING THE VEHICLE. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY REPORTED THIS DEFECT TO YOU WHEN I CALLED THEIR REGIONAL OFFICE IN AUSTELL GEORGIA ON THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT. HOWEVER, I AM REPORTING IT NOW, IN THE HOPE THAT THIS DOESN'T HAPPEN TO SOMEONE DRIVING DOWN A TEXAS HIGHWAY AT 80 MPH. THEIR FLIPPANT ATTITUDE CONCERNING THIS, TO ME, IS DISTURBING. I HAVE NOT YET HAD THE CAR REPAIRED AND AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. *JS

  • Consequence: IF THE INNER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY WAS TO BREAK AS A RESULT OF THE INTERNAL CRACK, THE TIE ROD END ASSEMBLY WOULD NOT LONGER BE ATTACHED TO THE STEERING GEAR BOX. THIS WOULD PREVENT STEERING CONTROL OF THAT FRONT WHEEL BY THE SEPARATED TIE ROD WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STEERING GEARBOX ASSEMBLIES ON THESE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS WERE CONTACTED BY TELEPHONE BEGINNING ON APRIL 8, 2005, AND INSTRUCTED NOT TO DRIVE THEIR VEHICLES. HYUNDAI WILL ARRANGE TO PICK UP AND RETURN THEIR VEHICLES AFTER REPAIR. Positive 2005 Hyundai Tiburon car reviews

  1. Abelardo Keeling 2024-11-24

I love this car! It rides so smoothly, steers excellently, and is just an all-around great car. Plus, its body style is unique, so it doesn't look like everything else on the road. As a new car owner, I couldn't be happier!

  2. Camden Funk 2024-11-05

For the past 3 years, I have been considering the Tiburon but it wasn't until I saw the 2005 model that I saw a mature and genuine sports car. It's not just a wannabe, but a real touring auto that is both fun to drive and attracts a lot of attention.

  3. Oren Cole 2024-10-16

The Tiburon is an amazing car that offers a lot to anyone looking for a sporty ride with great looks and plenty of extra features. Everything inside is nicely finished and conveniently located, and the seats hold you firmly in place. The car's torque is crazy and the driving experience is truly exciting. Plus, there are lots of aftermarket add-ons available to make your Tibby even more custom and high-performing. For example, the Alpine Developments supercharger can make over 300hp to the wheels! The exterior design is simply gorgeous, modeled after the Ferrari 456 and named Tuscani in Korea after a town in Italy. The tires, wheels, and suspension (developed together with Porsche designers) offer a truly sporty feel. And all of this can be yours for under 20k!

  4. Easter Considine 2024-10-10

I really enjoyed this car as soon as it came out because of its awesome styling. It's almost like an exotic Ferrari. I like every detail about this car inside and out, such as the nice twin mufflers, 17 inch rims, side grills, and the sports seats. You won't regret it.

  5. Trevor Renner 2024-09-24

My Tiburon is definitely the best car I've had so far! It's so sporty and fun to drive, and it handles really well. Plus, it's been super reliable. And the best part? There's a fantastic 100,000 miles/10 year warranty that comes with the vehicle, so I know I'm covered if anything ever goes wrong!
