The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
  • VIN: 3GTU2NEC1JG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: We purchased our 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 z71 brand new at Fairway Buick GMC in Las Vegas, NV. Pretty much off the lot we noticed some hard shifting, but over the last year/around 60,000 miles it has become progressively worse. Come to find out GM is aware of a known defect in the transmission used in this make/model and several others by GM which causes hard shifting and jerking while upshifting and down shifting primarily between 1st and 2nd gear. This malfunction has caused the vehicle to activate "limp mode" which doesn't allow the vehicle to move out of 1st gear, while driving on the road, putting the safety of the occupants and others on the road at risk. This first happened in January 2024 while we were moving and towing a 6' U-Haul trailer. Luckily we were within a few miles of our destination and made it there safely. Upon taking it to Autonation Buick GMC, we were told they had seen this issue before and the only solution would be to replace the transmission and would cost roughly $6,000-$8,000, and that's with the generous 20% discount they were willing to offer. We opted to have the transmission flushed instead and it seemed to fix the problem temporarily. Then on [XXX] while decelerating and coming to a stop light it hard shifted from 2nd to 1st then the check engine light came on and limp mode was activated. It was 110 degrees on this day in Las Vegas when my husband was driving home from work, and again by the grace of God, he was only 5 minutes from home and made it there safely. However, what if this had occurred with our two young children in the vehicle and we were no where near home? We would have been stranded in dangerous conditions potentially putting our safety as risk. This KNOWN defect in GM transmissions is 100% a safety risk and this needs to be investigated and recalled immediately. There is an ongoing class action lawsuit against GM regarding this issue and I will be looking to get involved as well. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-21
  • VIN: 3GTU2NEC4JG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I kept getting a constant alert on my vehicle dash board that said "service trailer brake system" the beeping alert was quite literally constant and it covered up the digital speed odometer, every time I tried to acknowledge the alert it would just pop up and start beeping again. I searched online and quickly realized that this problem with the brake system has plagued GM vehicles for several years and I attempted to fix the issue myself by buying factory parts that other GM owners stated was the issue but it did not correct the issue. I ended up needing to take it to a GM service center and my vehicle was there for 2 business days and it ran me several hundred dollars to have GM fix the issue in the electrical brake system. Again according from online research this problem has plagued a large number of GM vehicles and it would be nice to see GM issue a recall and correct the issue so other people don't end up in the situation I was in.

Come to find out there is a class action lawsuit currently filed for GM owners of this transmission, claiming some 800,000 GM products contain a knowingly faulty transmission. A recall should be in place being that nearly a million vehicles are affected by this.

Negative 2018 Gmc Sierra 1500 car reviews

  1. Flavio Littel 2024-10-17

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share that I've been taking great care of my truck, but unfortunately, I've noticed that the engine oil cooler lines are leaking at less than 50k. I reached out to GM about it, but they won't honor their warranty. Additionally, I've noticed that my trailer brake system needs some service at 70k. Lastly, my engine has a ticking sound. Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to address these issues?

  2. Gabe Wuckert 2024-09-13

For the past 5 years, I have traded my trucks annually, but this year I was only offered a trade-in value of $14,000. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I received trade-in offers ranging from $18,000 to $21,000 for my trucks, all of which had around 32,000 miles on them. I take great care of my trucks and even have fiberglass painted bed toppers on them, all in a beautiful white frost tri-coat with leather interiors. Unfortunately, I recently visited a dealer in Collinsville, IL who marked down their 2019 Denalis by $7,770, but still wanted $18,565, which was disappointing.

Many GMC and Chevy owners, including myself, have experienced issues with the dashes in our vehicles. It is disappointing to spend 30 to 40 thousand on a new vehicle and have such a problem. However, I believe that GMC and Chevy can still stand behind their quality and address this issue. While I have considered trading for a Toyota, I do appreciate everything else about my GMC truck. I have looked into purchasing a new dash, but the cost of around 1200 pounds is quite high, and I have been told that there is no guarantee that the issue will not happen again. I hope that GMC and Chevy will take responsibility for this issue and provide a solution that will satisfy their customers.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share some feedback about the headlights on my car. I've noticed that they don't seem to be as bright as I would like them to be, which can make it difficult to see the road ahead. I've been using my fog lights to compensate, but I think it would be great if the headlights could be improved. Perhaps brighter bulbs or a new light assembly could do the trick? I really enjoy my car, but the headlights are definitely an area for improvement. Thank you for your time!

I bought my 2018 GMC Sierra Crew Cab brand new with the intention of having a reliable truck for my retirement in 2022. I used to drive it 184 km per day to work. Unfortunately, in September 2022, my transmission broke down and I was over my coverage limit with 168,000 km on the odometer. However, I was pleased to find out that GM covered half of the $3,300 bill. Although, in November 2022, I encountered another issue with my engine, which had bent push rods and faulty lifters and rockers, costing me a total of $6,617.34. I reached out to GM via email, but have yet to receive a response. Despite these setbacks, I am still enjoying my retirement, but I hope to resolve these issues with GM soon.

I used to be a die-hard Ford fan, but after driving a GMC, I fell in love and can't imagine going back to a Ford unless it's a diesel.

This is my first pickup and I am very impressed so far after 3 years and 34K miles. I use it mainly for pulling a 7000 lb RV and it has performed flawlessly. I shopped all pickup brands and I have no regrets choosing GMC.

Your truck sounds amazing! With 115K miles on it, it still looks and runs like it's brand new! The GMC's in this series are truly impressive and don't seem to show their age. It's great to hear that it's also very comfortable. With the 5.3, you're getting an average of 23 MPG, which is fantastic!

The 6.2 liter Corvette engine provides a great ride with luxurious features at a good market price.

I've been driving this thing all over the place and after ten thousand miles, I can confidently say that it's been a great experience. The gas mileage is excellent and it hauls with no issues. I was initially skeptical, but now I strongly believe that the v6 engines of today are more than enough to do the job. I have vinyl seats and flooring, and I haven't had to deal with any stains. Everything wipes up easily. I haven't had any issues with the Bluetooth, and the sound system is great. I would definitely recommend this vehicle and buy it again. The only minor complaint I have is that the engine is a little bouncy at idle, but it's been like that since it was new.
