2008 Hyundai Tiburon problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Tiburon (Korean: 현대 티뷰론) known in Europe as the Hyundai Coupé (현대 쿠페) is a sports coupe that was produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai from 1996 to 2008.

The name "Tiburon", a slight variation of "tiburón", the Spanish word for "shark", is the name given to the North American, Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Austrian production of the vehicle. It was known as the Hyundai Coupe in some European markets and Indonesia. It had been branded as the Turbulence (터뷸런스) and Tuscani (투스카니) in the home South Korean market.

The model had been released in two generations (RC) over its lifespan and in that time these generations have been subject to periodic facelifts. These facelifts have attempted to keep the car up to date with various safety improvements and a mixture of changes to exterior and interior styling. The RD Tiburon was in production for 5 years from 1996 to 2001. The GK Tiburon was introduced in 2002 (as a 2003 model) and ended production in 2008 before being replaced by the Hyundai Veloster.

Common 2008 Hyundai Tiburon problems

The Hyundai Tiburon, particularly the 2008 model, has been known for several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the clutch, with many owners experiencing slipping, going out, or wearing out.

Another issue that has been reported by owners is related to the power window system, specifically the driver's side power window, which has failed in some cases.

Fuel injector failure is another common problem in the 2008 Tiburon, with some owners reporting that they had to replace the fuel injector.

The timing belt is another area of concern in the 2008 Tiburon. The timing belt in these cars is known to be snap-happy, leading to engine damage when it snaps

. The timing belt should be replaced every 100,000 kilometers or 60,000 miles to prevent this problem

Several sensors, including the O2 sensor, throttle position sensor, oil pressure sensor, and MAF sensor, are also known to go bad in the 2008 Tiburon, requiring replacement

. The fuel pump and fuel filter are also known to fail, with the charcoal canister often being responsible for issues with filling the gas tank

. The fuel pump and fuel filter are located underneath the rear seats and can be tedious to replace

In addition to these specific issues, the 2008 Tiburon has been reported to have problems with plastic pieces dislodging and hitting other parts, as well as issues with the sunroof hesitating and controls getting gummed up

Overall, the 2008 Hyundai Tiburon has several common problems that owners have reported, including clutch issues, power window failures, fuel injector failure, timing belt problems, and sensor failures. Regular maintenance, especially timely replacement of the timing belt, can help prevent some of these issues. However, some problems, such as sensor failures, may be unavoidable and require replacement.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-01-14
  • VIN: KMHHM66D58U
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: PURCHASED NEW, ORIGINAL OWNERS. AIRBAG LIGHT HAS COME ON VARIOUS TIMES REQUIRING REPAIR, AND DEALERSHIP OF PURCHASE (NORTH PARK HYUNDAI) HAS ALWAYS REFUSED TO REPAIR DEFECTS UNDER WARRANTY COVERAGE ON VEHICLE. AIRBAG CONTROL MODULE FAILED FOR NO REAL REASON (DEALERSHIP SAID MOISTURE CAUSED FAILURE - VERY HOT AND HUMID IN SOUTH LOUISIANA) AND REFUSED TO COVER THE PART SO WE PAID OVER 600 BUCKS TO CHANGE THE MODULE BECAUSE OUR COLLEGE AGE DAUGHTER IS USING THIS VEHICLE. NOT LONG AFTER THIS REPAIR (THAT WAS TOLD TO US, BY THIS DEALERSHIP, WOULD TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM), THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. OUR LATEST VISIT TO THIS DEALERSHIP WAS THE SAME - THIS TIME THEY SAID IT IS THE AIRBAG SENSOR UNDER THE PASSENGER SEAT (NOT THE CENTER CONSOLE ONE THAT FAILED LAST TIME) AND (WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT) THEY WANTED ANOTHER 600 DOLLARS TO CHANGE THIS MODULE! THERE ARE OBVIOUSLY ISSUES WITH THE 2008 TIBURON AIRBAG SYSTEM (THIS CAR ONLY HAS AROUND 60K MILES ON IT), AND WE ARE VERY CONCERNED WHEN WE ARE IN IT. LUCKILY THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-08-02
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: KMHHN66F48U
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: MY 2008 HYUNDAI TIBURON HAS BEEN INVOLVED IN 3 ACCIDENTS (NONE MY FAULT). THE IMPACT WAS OF ENOUGH SIGNIFICANCE THAT THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. THE FIRST COLLISION INVOLVED A DEER THAT WAS BEING CHASED BY ANOTHER VEHICLE, AND IT HIT MY CAR SO HARD, THE DEER EXPLODED AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I WAS TOLD THE CRASH WAS EQUIVALENT TO 80 MPH HEAD ON. ALSO, SINCE I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE IT CONTINUALLY REVVS ITSELF AND NO ONE CAN FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM. IT DOES IT ALL THE TIME AND IS VERY DANGEROUS AS I CANNOT STOP WHILE ITS REVVING LIKE THIS. I HAVE TO THROW IT IN NEUTRAL, HIT THE GAS, THEN IT WILL STOP REVVING. THIS IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS (AND VERY ANNOYING) IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL WILL RANDOMLY SHUT ITSELF OFF AND QUITE FREQUENTLY. I DID NOT BUY THIS AS A USED CAR.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-02
  • VIN: KMHHN66F28U
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: ON 5/19/13 I PURCHASED 4 NEW GOOD YEAR ASSURANCE FUEL MAX TIRES. AFTER DRIVING LESS THAN 5,000 MILES ON THE TIRES MY TIRE PRESSURE LIGHT CAME ON 3 TIMES, &WHEN I CHECKED THEM, ALL 4 HAD GONE LOW (BY 5-7LBS OF PRESSURE EACH TIME) . AFTER THE 3RD TIME OF THIS HAPPENING, IN LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OF PURCHASE, I DECIDED TO SEARCH ONLINE TO SEE IF ANYONE ELSE WAS HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THESE TIES. THE RESULTS WERE SCARY; I FOUND DOZENS AND DOZENS OF BLOGS & REVIEWS STATING THESE TIRES WERE SLOWLY LOOSING AIR, BUBBLING &/OR BURSTING. MOST STATED CRACKS WERE FOUND ON THE SIDEWALL INSIDE THE TIRE, CAUSING PRESSURE TO GO LOW. AFTER SEEING THESE RESULTS, I WENT OUTSIDE AND INSPECTED MY TIRES MORE CLOSELY, AND THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE HAD A SMALL BUBBLE IN IT. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT BACK TO GOOD YEAR AND WAS TOLD THAT THE BUBBLE WAS A ROAD HAZARD ISSUE CAUSE BY HITTING A POT HOLE (AND THIS WAS BEFORE ANYONE EVEN TOOK THE TIRE OFF TO INSPECT IT). I ASKED WHY ALL 4 TIRES HAVE BEEN SLOWLY LOOSING AIR, AND THEIR REPLY WAS "THAT IS ODD, THAT DOESN'T USUALLY HAPPEN LIKE THAT." BASED ON MY FINDINGS FROM THE INTERNET, I ASKED THEM TO INSPECT THE INTERNAL SIDEWALLS OF THE TIRES, JUST TO MAKE SURE THERE WERE NO CRACKS THAT COULD BE CAUSING THE SLOW AIR LEAKS. I OPENED A FILE WITH GY'S CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY ASKED THE STORE TO INSPECT THE INSIDE OF ALL 4 TIRES, AND TO SEND THEM AN INSPECTION REPORT, BUT ALL THE TECH DID WAS SPRAY THE OUTSIDE OF THE TIRE TO CHECK FOR AIR BUBBLES/LEAKS (BUT DID NOT REMOVE THE TIRES TO CHECK THE INSIDE WALLS). THE TIRE WITH THE BUBBLE WAS REPLACED, BUT I WAS NOT ALLOWED TO KEEP THE TIRE TO HAVE IT INSPECTED. I WAS TOLD THE MANUFACTURER WOULD INSPECT IT, BUT THAT WILL TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS. I'M VERY CONCERNED WITH THE NUMBER OF REVIEWS/BLOGS ONLINE WITH THE SAME/SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE TIRES, SO I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT TO DOCUMENT MY EXPERIENCE WITH THEM. I'VE HAD MY CAR SINCE 2008 AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH MY OLD TIRES. *TR

2008 Hyundai Tiburon recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2008 Hyundai Tiburon.

2013-04-01
  • Manufacturer: Hyundai Motor Company
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
  • Summary: Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake transmission shift interlock feature, preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
  • Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151. Hyundai's recall campaign number is 110.

Negative 2008 Hyundai Tiburon car reviews

  1. Raheem Greenholt 2024-10-23

If you're considering purchasing a Tib, I would recommend avoiding the standard shift option as I've had some issues with mine. Unfortunately, I've had to take it in for repairs four times since purchasing it, twice for the clutch, once for a flywheel, and once for a snapped cable. The cost of repairing the clutch will be over $1000 if it's not covered by warranty. I've heard from a couple of Hyundai mechanics that they frequently have to replace the clutches, which is disappointing. Despite these issues, the car is a vibrant red color.

  2. Bart Volkman 2024-08-14

Hyundai built a car with affordable pricing and utilized cost-effective parts. While driving it down the road, I can imagine the South Korean manufacturers who built it feeling proud to see Americans enjoying it. Although there were some issues with the clutch, paint fading, and the e-brake, the car is still drivable. It may not be the quietest car, but it gets the job done. I would recommend considering other options, but ultimately the decision is yours. I personally won't sell it because I care about the safety of others on the road.

  3. Cecil Bednar 2024-06-26

Hi there! Let's start by talking about the advantages of the Hyundai Tiburon GT limited edition. Firstly, the pricing is fantastic at just $17,000, making it a great buy in my opinion. Additionally, the fuel economy is pretty good, with 22mpg in the city and 28mpg on the highway. While it may not be the fastest car out there, it's still great for backroad bombing and works pretty well on the highway. Overall, it's an acceptable car for its price range and not too flashy either. However, there is always room for improvement and Hyundai could make some tweaks to the Tiburon. What do you think?

Positive 2008 Hyundai Tiburon car reviews

  1. Dock Johns 2024-11-24

I absolutely fell in love with this car the moment I laid eyes on it. I recently purchased my Tiburon after taking it for a test drive about a month ago. After driving a Jeep for two years and an Explorer for five years before that, I was ready to get back into a fun car. The Tiburon is just that - fun. It has a very smooth ride and decent acceleration for a 4 cylinder, although the power cut is noticeable when the a/c is on. The five-speed transmission is a little stiff, but it's nothing that can't be handled. It's worth noting that the blind spot took a little getting used to, but it's not a major issue. It's not a family car, so don't expect to give rides to anybody over about 5'-10

  2. Orville Veum 2024-11-22

From the moment you test drove this vehicle, you were pleasantly surprised with how sporty and fun it is to drive. It has plenty of pep in the motor and the handling is nimble enough to qualify as a legitimate sport coupe. For the price and performance, we think the Tiburon is a diamond in the rough.

  3. Ibrahim Hoeger 2024-11-03

I bought this to save on fuel costs and reduce the amount of driving I do in my truck.

  4. Jaylan Carroll 2024-11-01

This is a great little car that my wife and I just bought after finishing college. We're really happy with its performance. We've had Civics and Mustangs in the past and this Tiburon rates right up there. It doesn't handle quite as well as a Civic Si, but it handles better (and is more fun to drive) than a Mustang.

  5. Porter Greenholt 2024-10-21

This is the second Tiburon I have owned. The last one was a 2006 GT V6, but unfortunately it was stolen. Due to budget constraints, I replaced it with a 4-cylinder GS automatic. I bought this new in March 2009 for $13,090 plus taxes. You can't beat that price, especially considering it comes with a moonroof and cruise control!
