2016 Hyundai Genesis problems

hyundai logo

The Hyundai Genesis (Korean: 현대 제네시스) is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Hyundai Motor Company over two generations from 2008 until 2016, before it was renamed the Genesis G80. It is a five-passenger, four-door, rear- or all-wheel-drive sedan.

Introduced in concept form at the 2007 New York International Auto Show, and internally designated as the BH model, the Genesis was expected to cost $533 million to develop. Hyundai began marketing the first generation Genesis worldwide (except in Europe) in 2008 as a "premium sports sedan". The second generation Genesis (model DH) debuted in Seoul, Korea in November 2013 followed by the 2014 North American International Auto Show and Toronto Auto Show.

On 4 November 2015, Hyundai announced that the name Genesis and Hyundai's second generation luxury model would move to a new and separate luxury division, Genesis Motor. The Genesis — as a Hyundai model — was replaced in actuality in 2017 when the second generation Hyundai Genesis was renamed the G80. The move followed the model's success in the luxury market, paired with consumer acceptance of the Genesis nameplate.

Common 2016 Hyundai Genesis problems

The Hyundai Genesis, a full-sized luxury sedan produced from 2008 to 2016, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues primarily fall under the categories of Electrical, Powertrain, Engine, and Interior.

Electrical Defects:
One of the most common electrical issues reported is dead batteries, which often occur due to a defective alternator that fails to keep the battery charged.

Powertrain Defects:
Powertrain issues in the Hyundai Genesis include the sudden engine shutoffs and stalls, which can be extremely dangerous and increase the risk of fatal accidents and injuries. These stalls can occur without any warning, even at traffic lights, and can be a significant safety concern.

Engine Defects:
Engine problems are prevalent in the Hyundai Genesis, with the most common issue being sudden engine shutoffs and stalls. These stalls can be caused by various factors, including faulty sensors, wiring issues, or engine control module malfunctions. Additionally, the engine may feel lean at times, leading to rough idling and sluggish acceleration, which can be concerning for drivers.

Interior Defects:
Interior issues in the Hyundai Genesis include problems with the infotainment system, such as the radio volume increasing on its own and the media connection disconnecting frequently. These issues can be frustrating for drivers and passengers, especially during long trips.

It is important to note that Hyundai has issued recalls and NHTSA investigations for some of these issues, but they seem to persist in some models. If you own a Hyundai Genesis and have experienced any of these problems, it is recommended that you contact a qualified mechanic or dealership for further assistance.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-06
  • VIN: KMHGN4JE8GU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: This has happened a few times the first time i was driving and the headlights flicked on and off on the dash it showed it switched from auto to off by its self it has done that a few times. The time that i was driving on the highway and the lights when out during the night i was driving 65mph over a pass with no warning I had to turn them on because they did not come back on by them self. I contacted the hyundai dealership they told me there was a tsb for it but the problem would have to happen while they are driving it so they could fix it under warranty. This is a huge safety risk because they note "Certain vehicles may exhibit intermittent headlight flickering while driving with the light switch on AUTO light mode" in there TSB and it says " intermittent" witch means "not happening regularly or continuously" so it doesn't happen they wont cover it under warranty. And it happens at random times witch causes a safety risk because if the light out it can cause a fatal accident. i contacted hyundai about this my self and they told me the same thing that the dealer has to have it happen to them or its not covered. please look into this it needs to be recalled tsb 20-BE-009H-1

It has caused me to almost wreck several times. I have called all of the local Hyundai dealerships none of which say they can get me in for weeks and that there is no fix for my problem. The dealer was not able to fix it, and it's a very dangerous car to drive now. I will not let any other members of my family drive it. Also, I've had a severe drivetrain vibration for about a year, and over $7,000 was spent on a new driveshaft and transfer case. It is now worse than it was and the dealer doesn't know what to do. Even with only 34,000 miles on the car, it is out of warranty, and Hyundai doesn't seem to care. I have installed brand new tires hoping that it might help both situations, but it didn't. I'm just at my wit's end now. I guess I will just have to park the car. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Negative 2016 Hyundai Genesis car reviews

  1. Price Adams 2024-07-24

In my opinion, a car that costs $53,000 should come with a key fob that has a remote start button. Even the least expensive cars have this feature, and it's disappointing that you have to purchase the Bluetooth option to be able to start the car remotely. When I leased the car, I was told how great it was, but this is my only complaint. I have two homes, one in the city and one in the country in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, if you are in an area without cell service, you won't be able to start the car remotely, which can be inconvenient on cold mornings and evenings. On our way to dinner, I was excited to show off my new car to our friends, but I was disappointed that I couldn't remotely start it to warm it up. Additionally, if you don't use the remote start feature within a few days, you have to reprogram the system all over again. In contrast, my 2013 Lincoln MKZ allowed me to start the car from the window of both of my homes, and it would be warm or cool in just a few minutes. Overall, I think Genesis should have put more thought into this feature, and I'm not sure if I would lease another Genesis in the future.

  2. Cornelius Crist 2024-07-21

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with the 2016 Genesis. While the car is beautiful and has many great features, I have had some trouble with the BlueLink package. I received some update and download information in my email, but unfortunately, the navigation system in the Genesis does not allow for this feature. The dealership is currently working on a solution, but in the meantime, I have been receiving error messages when trying to update. I am hoping that this issue will be resolved soon. Despite this setback, I still believe that the Genesis is a great car and I am enjoying all of its other features. Thank you for listening to my experience!

This car has everything you would want in a large, luxury car. Still learning all the great bells and whistles.

  2. Marlon Ortiz 2024-10-28

I've had my Genesis 2016 for less than 10 months. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with the door handles. The rear left passenger door handle broke off, and now the other passenger door handle has also broken in half. Although I was just opening the door to retrieve my umbrella, it seems that the handles are made of plastic and not as durable as they should be for a vehicle of this price. Despite these issues, I still love my car. However, I do think that the dealership could improve their service by keeping the parts in stock and ready to go. Overall, I believe that the car could benefit from sturdier handles that last longer.

I bought the car for my wife 18 months ago and she tells me often how much she loves it and how good it makes her feel. We absolutely adore this car! It's so quiet in the cab and the all-around performance is simply awesome. The only thing we could possibly say that's not great is that the fuel mileage could be a little better, getting around 14mpg or maybe even less around town.

I really enjoy the smooth ride and powerful engine of this car. My family and I just got back from a road trip and we had a great time. We haven't had any issues with the engine so far, which is fantastic. However, we did have to replace the strips on top of the car from the outside for the second time. Unfortunately, they don't seem to last very long and the paint was peeling off. The first time it happened, it was still under warranty, but the second time was not. I think they may have used a cheaper paint for this part, which is a bit disappointing. Despite this, everything else about the car is perfect. We've had it since 2016 and the engine still runs very quietly. Sometimes, I can't even tell if it's on or off!

This car is incredibly comfortable and has fantastic electronics. I opted for the Tech Package when I purchased it, as the Ultimate package did not have Android Auto until the 2018 models, which was a must-have for me. The difference it makes is remarkable. While the pickup and handling may not be on par with an Audi A6, once cruising, there is no difference. I actually prefer the handling on the Genesis, as it feels smoother and more luxurious. The ride is incredibly quiet and the seats are very comfortable. Adaptive Cruise Control takes some getting used to, but it's fantastic once you do. The warranty is also great. The only downsides are the fuel economy, which is most likely due to the car's weight, and the odd packaging of options. Unfortunately, the steering wheel and back seat heating are only available in the AWD model, and the 360-degree camera is only available in European models. The only thing I really dislike is that you have to purchase a $200 Blue Link subscription to remotely heat the car. It seems like this could be done through a direct Wifi connection or through the remote without the need for a subscription.
