The Toyota Highlander, also known as the Toyota Kluger (Japanese: トヨタ・クルーガー, Hepburn: Toyota Kurūgā), is a mid-size crossover SUV with three-row seating produced by Toyota since 2000.

Announced in April 2000 at the New York International Auto Show and arriving in late 2000 in Japan and January 2001 in North America, the Highlander became one of the first car-based mid-size SUV or mid-size crossovers. The Highlander is the crossover counterpart to the more rugged, truck-based mid-size 4Runner and became Toyota's best-selling SUV before being surpassed by the smaller RAV4 in 2006.

The first-generation model was sold in Japan as the Kluger, which was exclusive to dealership network called Toyota Netz as a larger alternative to the RAV4. The Kluger nameplate is also used in Australia because "Highlander" is a trademarked trim line name owned by Hyundai. The name is derived from the German word klug, which means smart or clever (Klüger – with diacritics – means "someone who is smarter than another" in German).

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
  • VIN: 5TDDGRFH6HS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: While accelerating onto highways, my Toyota Highlander suddenly misfires, causing rough engine and a natural response to decelerate instead of continuing to accelerate. The ignition coil was blamed, I replace and then a week later it happens again while trying to accelerate on the highway. Another replacement and then it happens again a third time. There was a known issue under Toyota’s TSB 0148-19, where engine computers were reprogrammed and all coils replaced. My vehicle model year and engine model but doesn’t show this TSB. I am aware TSBs are not recalls, but the sudden repeat engine misfires, all in a year, while accelerating to highway speeds, is a concern.

At next stop, lower gears where not available. Vehicle seemed be in 4th(?) gear when accelerating from a stop. Very little power available. Had to engage hazard flashers and other vehicles navigated around our vehicle. Managed to limp car ~ 1 mile to home. Approaching driveway, Master Warning Light, Check Engine Light and 4WD Warnign light all illuminated. This issue created a loss of power that impaired the drivers ability to maintain a safe speed relevative to traffic. Had this issue occurred during high-speed operation, the vehicle may have been disabled in a high-risk area. Transmission appears to be unreliable.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-25
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH2HS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: While braked at a red light, my vehicle completely turned off. The engine would not restart, and all electrical panel light indicators did not come back on. I could not even turn on my hazards. The whole car was dead. After about a minute, I was able to restart the vehicle, but it took 5 attempts. I changed my battery two months ago, and just had my car checked by a mechanic and nothing was found to be the problem. No warning lamps or other messages were displayed. About 6 months ago, my car did something similar to this and stalled on the freeway in bumper to bumper traffic. However, this time the electrical panel light indicators came back on. No warning messages displayed. The car restarted after only one try. This is really dangerous to have a vehicle loose all power and completely die out!

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-09
  • VIN: 5TDDZRFH7HS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: There is a toyota service bulletin for known transmission issues with this vehicle. I had noticed that my gears weren't shifting properly. The dealer checked vehicle and said transmission was bad, and that toyota would replace it, for free. However, the part would take one month to arrive. This all occurred on 1/9/2024. I was told by the dealer that Toyota would not cover a rental car while the part was on order, but only for the repair itself. The dealer told me the Toyota recommendation was to not drive the vehicle -- but other customers had done so until they received their parts for repair. I picked up my vehicle after work at approximately 7:15pm. While driving, the vehicle completely shutdown on me in a major highway miles from downtown Philadelphia, in a flooding rainstorm that produced nearly 4 inches of rain. If Toyota knows there is a problem with this vehicle and its transmission, then why is there no recall? And if I'm being told the I should not drive the vehicle, then why isn't it mandated or required for them to provide me a rental - especially since this is the fault of Toyota?

I was able to jump start it after about 30 minutes. I got towed to a local repair shop who could not identify or duplicate the issue. I had no warning indicators other than failing to start the morning of getting the battery replaced 3 days ago.

Please have Toyota take responsibility for their irresponsible paint job on this door. The vehicle has never been in an accident or hit with anything on the drivers side of the door. They need to correct their incomplete and incompetent painting. There seems to be no sealant underneath for the paint to adhere to. Please address this error.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-14
  • VIN: 5TDJZRFH5HS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: Highlander shift issue 11/14/2023 On 11/14/2023, our 2017 Toyota Highlander, vin# [XXX] , upon driving the transmission decided on its own to disengage. Our Highlander stopped propelling itself in either direction. We had to manually push our vehicle into a parking spot and await the tow truck. Our Highlander is in mint condition with 71,400 miles on it. This was scary because the vehicle would shift on the shifter, but for some reason the transmission would not engage. The engine worked perfectly fine. We had the Highlander towed to the nearest Toyota dealer who pushed the vehicle into their garage and placed on a lift. The Highlander had no idiot lights on, no cable issues, fluid was fine per the Toyota Technician. The Toyota Tech placed the vehicle on their main computer and there were no error codes. The Tech reset the computer on the vehicle with a Toyota Master computer, and the vehicle started to work as normal. I consider this a huge issue and I thank God that my wife was not on the interstate highway when this happened. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-13
  • VIN: 5TDDZRFH5HS
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This is the SECOND incident with this vehicle in the past 4 months. When going to start my vehicle, it would not start. It gave me this error message: Braking power low, Stop in a Safe Place, See owners manual. There is NOTHING about this in the owners manual. The first time I thought it was battery related and after 3 different chargers on my vehicle, it finally started. Tonight I proceeded to push the button without the foot pedal and the radio came on, so it is definitely not the battery. I've tried several times to start and to no avail. Problem has not been reproduced as i cannot drive my vehicle at this time. No inspection as of yet. No warnings or symptoms prior to failure. Research shows it may have to do with a fuel pump pressure issue. I have paperwork on this issue under a customer support program 23TE01. Hoping this can become a recall and i can get this fixed .

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-04
  • VIN: 5TDKZRFH6HS
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: About two weeks prior to the transmission failing, I started hearing a high-pitched whining coming from the transmission, difficulty shifting, and lurching forward when engaging the gear. On the evening of October 4th, my wife was driving at 65 mph on a busy freeway in Atlanta when the vehicle lost acceleration. She was nearly hit while stopped on the freeway. Fortunately, kind motorists got out of their cars and pushed her to the side of the road. The car was towed to a Toyota service shop, and we were advised they could not do the repairs. The mechanic stated it was a known internal Toyota issue. I did some research online and found hundreds of posts from Highlander owners of 2017-18 vehicles complaining about issues with the transmission failing. I found Toyota Customer Support Bulletin POL [XXX] dated 4/18/2019, REPAIR COVERAGE FOR UA80 TRANSMISSION ON CERTAIN 2017-2018 MY SIENNA AND CERTAIN 2017-2018 MY HIGHLANDER VEHICLES. The mechanic said the failure code with a failed transaxle and all the symptoms my vehicle experienced were consistent with the bulletin. My time period for the bulletin was for cars produced from November 2016 to December 2017. My vehicle’s manufacturing date was 12/8/2016. Toyota claims my vehicle although produced during this time was not impacted. It is my belief that Toyota was aware of multiple failures on UA80 transmissions on vehicles produced from 2016 to 2020 and deliberately identified a smaller number to avoid a recall. Negative 2017 Toyota Highlander car reviews

I was really excited about my car and told everyone it was the best one I've ever owned. Unfortunately, the transmission failed twice, which was a major inconvenience. The first time it happened, I had to get a flatbed truck to take it to the dealer. The dealer claimed to have fixed it with a software update, but the very next day it failed again while I was on the interstate, miles away from home. I had to get another flatbed truck to take it to the nearest dealer, which was closed on Sunday. My son had to drive for hours to come pick us up. We rented a car on Monday and didn't hear back from the dealer until Friday, when they told us that the transmission was totally broken and needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, there were no replacements available, so we'll have to wait four weeks for a new one to be shipped. In the meantime, we're still driving the rental car.

In August 2017, we purchased a new Highlander. Despite having only 6k miles, we brought it in for maintenance and discovered that it was leaking oil. Although Toyota service and engineers were unable to determine the cause, they suggested flushing the system and monitoring it. However, we are not comfortable driving a vehicle with engine issues, especially with our two young children. As loyal Toyota owners with six vehicles in our family, we are disappointed that the case manager has not taken any action to remedy the situation. As a business owner, I firmly believe in making things right when mistakes are made. Therefore, we request a replacement vehicle. We hope that Toyota will take the necessary steps to resolve this issue and restore our faith in the brand.

I own both a 2017 Highlander and a 2017 Honda Pilot. While I find the Highlander more comfortable to drive and prefer its physical stereo controls over the laggy touch screen in the Pilot, I must say that the Pilot is better in nearly every other way. Not only is it cheaper when similarly equipped, but it also has far more interior space and is much more flexible when it comes to fitting child safety seats, with more latch points available in the 2nd and 3rd row. Additionally, the Pilot gets better fuel economy.

I leased the 2014 XLE in May 2017 and I really enjoyed driving it. The car had very minor issues and was overall a better car than the one I have now. Unfortunately, the new 8 speed transmission is slow, jerky and non-responsive, and the GDI engine doesn't help to get better mileage than the old one. The start-stop feature doesn't seem to improve efficiency and may even create mechanical issues. While the driving experience is still comfortable, the steering doesn't give any feedback and the suspension makes more noise than the previous model. The Entune system hasn't been updated and looks like it was designed by an amateur software team. The material quality is also far behind that of new generation SUVs. However, there are still some good things about the car, such as its good size, roomy interior, good snow traction, and better exterior design than other Toyotas. The standard safety features work fine. The competition is getting harder in this segment, and Toyota needs to improve the chassis, transmission, electronics, and material quality both inside and out. I have owned 4 Toyotas, but this will be my last. The new Camry doesn't give me any hope for the new Highlander that always shares the same platform.

The first transmission failed after 7000 miles, but it was promptly replaced at no cost. However, after adding approximately 7000 more miles, the new transmission also malfunctioned. Despite being a loyal Toyota owner, this experience has been disappointing. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Positive 2017 Toyota Highlander car reviews

I'm so glad to hear that you're okay after such a scary experience! It's amazing to hear that your 2014 Highlander LE FWD kept you safe during such a high-speed collision. The state troopers and DOT officers were right to praise the vehicle's safety features. It's great to know that Toyota puts such a strong emphasis on safety. I'm sure that your experience will encourage others to research the safety features of their vehicles before making a purchase. Thank you for sharing your story and I wish you a speedy recovery!

I previously owned a Toyota with a V6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission, which shifted smoothly. While the new 8-speed automatic is okay, it doesn't compare to the 6-speed and can be a bit sluggish. In my opinion, the car would have been perfect if Toyota had stuck with the 6-speed auto. However, after owning this car for 13 months and putting 8900 miles on it, I have found that everything is great except for acceleration. From a standing start, the car is slow and frustrating. I was even considering getting rid of it until I installed a “PEDAL COMMANDER” which fixed the problem. I now run it in sport mode and the acceleration is excellent. It's a shame that Toyota couldn't have designed it right from the start. I find that the transmission shifts much better in sport mode where I can manually shift it. On 1 February 2019, I took the car to the dealership for routine maintenance and they performed some computer updates which made a significant difference in the acceleration and transmission shifting. Apparently, Toyota has periodic updates to some cars that they don’t necessarily make public, but if you show up, they will do the update. The car is now a little over 2 years old with 14,300 miles on it and I have it set up to tow a Jayco SLX 195RB travel trailer weighing in at 3350 lbs. The Highlander has no problem towing this camper and I get about 15mpg while towing, which is great. When I purchased this Highlander, I made sure it had the factory installed towing package.I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my thoughts on the 8 speed transmission Toyota put in this car. While it's not my favorite, I've gotten used to it and it's okay. Personally, I still prefer the older 6 speed. If you plan on towing with this car, it's recommended that you leave it in sport mode and avoid going above 6th gear. The 7th and 8th gears are geared up (overdrive) and shouldn't be used while towing. Overall, I think this is a really good car and definitely a keeper!

Hi there! I'm 74 and could use a little help with driving. I really appreciate the lane departure warning and blind spot warning features. Although I haven't needed the forward collision warning yet, I'm glad it's there in case I don't notice someone slowing down ahead of me. What's great about this brand is that I was able to get these features without having to pay for an upper trim level, which can cost much more. In fact, other brands were charging as much as $10,000 more just to get all the new safety features. Thanks for making driving safer and more affordable!

I made the mistake of switching from an XLE to the Limited at the dealership before researching. I assumed the wheels were Chromed alloy wheels. However, they are actually plastic hubcaps coated to look like aluminum. My Highlander is a 2017 model and we have driven less than 5000 miles so far. It's too early to make a complete evaluation, but so far, so good. I just wanted to let everyone know that the wheels are covered with a plastic hubcap that is permanently bonded to the wheel. The Toyota salesman may not volunteer this information.

The car is very comfortable, with the seats in the front providing firm and good support. The stereo and Bluetooth connection to cell phone/pandora are good, making for an enjoyable driving experience. The road trip from Colorado to Calgary and back via Glacier, Banff, Yellowstone, with 5 adults and baggage was comfortable, except for the third row seating. The car is very smooth and a pleasure to drive. The Toyota Platinum Extended warranty, with zero deductible, 125,000 miles, 10 years, is a great addition to the purchase. Overall, I am happy with the purchase. When purchasing, it is important to check that the gas and temp gauges are working and are accurate. On a test drive, make sure to check this thoroughly. Update 1/15/18: I removed one star (now 4 stars) due to perceived cost of future maintenance. While the car is responsive, quiet, handles well, and holds the road well, reliability and longevity are key for us, as well as low costs of ownership and maintenance costs. We were looking at RAV4, priced right, but it seemed a little cramped. The salesman suggested Highlander, and we drove an LE with V6 and AWD and really liked it. We got a good price and the rest is history. We like how the car drives and looks, and the performance is there when needed. We are currently getting around 24-25 mpg with a combination of highway and local driving. We were fortunate enough to purchase a Toyota extended warranty that covers us up to 125,000 miles or 10 years (whichever comes first). Overall, we would give the car a 5-star rating, but there are a few things to consider: Firstly, new plugs are required every 60,000 miles to maintain the emission warranty. However, to access the plugs, a manifold must be removed, which can raise the cost of the service. Secondly, at 120,000 miles, the brake booster vacuum pump needs to be replaced as part of regular maintenance. The part alone costs over $1,000, and labor is additional. This is required maintenance and not considered an extended warranty item. Thirdly, the wheels appear to be alloy wheels, but they are coated with clear plastic, which could be damaged by scraping a curb. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to repair this damage other than replacing the wheel, which can cost $700 each if purchased from Toyota. We hope that Toyota can focus a bit more on low cost of ownership. Lastly, while we have not experienced this problem ourselves as we have an LE (manual rear hatch), there have been some reported instances of failure of the electrically operated rear hatch on other Highlander models. Update July 2020: We continue to enjoy driving this car, and we have not experienced any issues with it. We use regular gas, keep it in the garage, and get regular dealer maintenance. Overall, it is a fun and comfortable car to drive, although the gas mileage could be better, as we are getting around 24mpg combined.
