2009 Nissan Cube problems
The Nissan Cube is a mini MPV produced by carmaker Nissan between 1998 and 2019. Initially sold only in Japan, the Cube was sold in North American markets from 2009 to 2014, and in European markets from 2009 to 2011. In Japan, it was exclusive to Nissan Red Stage dealerships. It is a slightly larger load-carrying alternative to the Nissan Micra hatchback. While production for the North American market ended in 2014, the Japanese-market Cube lasted until December 2019.
First generation (Z10; 1998)
The first-generation Cube was introduced in 1998. It shared the same platform as the Nissan Micra (known as the March in Japan and Southeast Asia), as well as the same 1.3 L inline-four engine. A continuously variable transmission and four-wheel drive were optional. The Cube covered the gap in the Nissan lineup between the March and the Sunny.
Second generation (Z11; 2002)
The second-generation Cube was released in 2002 with a larger interior than the previous model. The combination of angled and curved surfaces was based on the third-generation Micra/March, powered by a 1.4 L I4 engine. The model included the "e4WD" system as an option, which transfers power to the rear wheels when the front wheels spin via a small electric motor on the rear underside of the floor. The electrically powered system allows for reduced drivetrain drag in FWD mode. A slightly longer three row model, the Cube Cubic (stylized as Cube³) went on sale in September 2003.
When equipped with a CVT, the steering wheel button controls and the sport wheel button on the dash panel are located next to the hazard flasher switch. In mid-2005, the cube had an optional upgrade with the new HR-series 1.5 L engine from the Nissan Tiida.
All Cube models have optional extras including an Ion filter (Air Ioniser) for cleaning the air and Nissan's 'smart key' which allows the driver to enter the car without having to use a key. Other options include a sunroof, 12 different styles of front grille and satellite navigation. Other specific models also have different styles of bodykits and fender flares. They come with optional 14 or 15 inch wheels and the Autech versions (Rider, Cube3 and GT models) with chrome styling and special seat covering.
The second-generation Cube was imported and sold in Malaysia by Mitsuoka as the M-Box and later the MPV. This model was different from other Mitsuoka models in that it had no major differences to the original car, and simply had a different grille and a couple of other exterior parts. The M-Box and MPV were exclusive to Malaysia.

- Summary: MY 2009 NISSAN CUBE HAD A RECALL FOR THE MANUFACTURING DEFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ELECTRICAL STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL). IT WENT OUT IN JANUARY 2020 AND THE NISSAN DEALER WANTS 832.00 TO REPAIR WHAT IS A NISSAN MANUFACTURING DEFECT. INVESTIGATING THIS IT WAS FOUND THAT IN JANUARY 2012, JUST BEFORE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED FROM THE NISSAN DEALER, THE ESCL RECALL WAS FIXED AT THE MURFREESBORO DEALERSHIP. AS I WASNT THE OWNER AT THE TIME I DO NOT HAVE PAPERWORK TO SHOW THIS, ONLY THE WORD FROM THE DEALER. THE ESCL IS OBVIOUSLY STILL A PROBLEM BUT THE DEALERSHIP SAID SINCE IT WAS FIXED ONCE THAT MET THE RECALL CRITERIA AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MANUFACTURERS DEFECTIVE ESCL. THE RED LIGHT WITH THE KEY CAME ON WHEN IT WAS PARKED AT A STORE AND WOULDN'T MOVE SO IT WAS TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALER. THEY HAVE STATED THE PART IS 579.93 AND THE LABOR WILL BE 312.50. NISSAN CONSUMER HOTLINE WAS CONTACTED AND THEY SAID THAT IT WAS REPAIRED BUT WOULDN'T GIVE ME A DATE/PLACE SO I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT IT FROM TO GET THIS INFORMATION. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO STATED IT WAS DONE IN JANUARY 2012 WHEN IT WAS IN THEIR POSSESSION TO SELL ON THE LOT. SINCE IT IS A DOCUMENTED MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY AND THE DEALERSHIP SUPPOSEDLY DID THE WORK WHILE THE CAR WAS FOR SALE ON THEIR LOT (MEANING WE HAVE TO TRUST THEY ACTUALLY DID THE EXPENSIVE REPAIR), WHEN THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS WHY IS IT NOT BEING COVERED? THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM THROUGHOUT THE INTERNET OF NISSAN 2009 CUBE OWNERS WHO TO THIS DAY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ESCL AND THE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE REPAIR BILLS THAT GO WITH IT.

IF THIS DOES NOT WORK, THE CAR MUST BE SHUT DOWN FOR A FEW MINUTES BEFORE ATTEMPTING A RESTART. UNFORTUNATELY ONCE THIS SITUATION HAPPENS, IT WILL VERY LIKELY RECUR SOON AFTER. IT IS MY OBSERVATION THAT THIS HAPPENS MOST OFTEN WHEN THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS QUITE HIGH (75 F AND ABOVE). ON COOL DAYS THE SITUATION IS NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN UNLESS THE CAR IS DRIVEN OVER AN HOUR IN DURATION. AS ANOTHER OBSERVATION IT IS MORE LIKELY TO HAPPEN IF THE GAS GAUGE IS LESS THAN FULL. I TRIED TO REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM TWICE FOR MAUS NISSAN BUT IT DID NOT OCCUR. THERE WAS A ENGINE SERVICE LIGHT ON DURING BOTH THOSE ATTEMPTS INDICATING A CATALYTIC CONVERTER ERROR. SINCE THAT TIME (EARLY 2018) THE PROBLEM HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES WITHOUT ANY SERVICE ENGINE WARNING BEING ON. THE FIRST TIME THE PROBLEM OCCURRED, I TOOK THE CAR INTO NISSAN IN CHATTANOOGA. THEY SAID THERE WAS A LITTLE TOO MUCH TRANSMISSION FLUID. THEY REMOVED SOME AND I CONTINUED ON THE FLORIDA. WITHIN 10 MINUTES THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. WHILE IN FLORIDA, WE LIMIT DRIVING TO EARLY MORNINGS AND EVENINGS FOR LESS THAN 30 MINUTES AND WE MAINTAIN THE GAS TANK ON FULL.

HOWEVER, MY PARTNER OWNS A 2009 ALTIMA AND HAD THE SAME ISSUE A MONTH AGO AND GOT IT FIXED AT NO COST. THE FACT THAT NUMEROUS 09 CUBE OWNERS ARE EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE AROUND THE SAME TIME WITH NO OFFER TO RECALL OR REIMBURSE US IS RIDICULOUS. - Summary: VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN A DOWNTOWN PARKING GARAGE WHILE MY WIFE WAS AT WORK. SHE CAME OUT OF WORK AFTER DARK, WITH NO ACCESS BACK INTO A BANKING BUILDING, AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START. AFTER CALLING ME AND TRYING A COUPLE THINGS, WE CALLED OUR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND I GOT IN MY CAR TO DRIVE 45 MINUTES THERE. MY WIFE HAD TO WAIT IN THE LOCKED CAR, ALONE, UNTIL MYSELF AND THE TOW TRUCK ARRIVED. THIS WAS AN UNSAFE SITUATION. WE HAD IT TOWED TO A DEALER AND FOUND OUT THE NEXT DAY THAT THE ESCL (ELECTRONIC STEERING CONTROL LOCK) HAD FAILED, WHICH PREVENTS THE CAR FROM STARTING. AFTER SPENDING $650 TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, I DID SOME INVESTIGATION AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM NOT JUST ON THE NISSAN CUBE, BUT WITH ALTIMAS, MAXIMAS, 370Z AND INFINITI VEHICLES. AFTER OUR REPAIR, NISSAN HAD EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE PART, BUT WE WERE PAST THE MILEAGE AND THEY WOULD NOT REIMBURSE US. THEY STILL HAVE AN OPEN SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR THE ALTIMAS AND MAXIMAS, BUT NOT THE CUBE OR OTHER AFFECTED VEHICLES. THIS IS A SEVER SAFETY CONCERN. MY WIFE WAS ALONE IN A DARK PARKING RAMP FOR ALMOST AN HOUR IN THE INNER CITY. IMAGINE IF THIS HAPPENED TO OTHERS AFTER NISSAN HAS ACKNOWLEDGED IT AS A PROBLEM, AND SOMEONE GETS MUGGED OR KILLED WHILE IN AN UNSAFE AREA AND CANT GET THEIR CAR STARTED. NISSAN SHOULD ISSUE A 100% RECALL ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AND PROVIDE REIMBURSEMENT FOR OWNERS WHO HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THE REPAIR.

THE TRANSMISSION CVT WHICH I NOW KNOW IT IS, BECAUSE OF YOUR WEBSITE, IT WAS MAKING ALL KINDS OF WEIRD NOISES (ENGINE REVVING). JERKING TRANSMISSION, SHIFTING (SLAMMING AND HARSH WHILE BRAKING) HAVE TRANSMISSION LEAKS REPORTED AND REPORTED THAT CVT WAS NOT ONLY LEAKING, BUT BLACKENED IN COLOR. (SAW IT YESTERDAY WHILE MECHANIC SHOWED ME INSIDE OF ENGINE AND CVT. WHEN I PRESS ON GAS PEDAL IT WOULD DROP OUT OF POWER AND HESITATES ON ACCELERATION. TAKING THE LEMON TO NISSAN AGAIN. You'll find that this vehicle handles bumps in the road with ease and has plenty of power for merging onto the highway. Additionally, it has a tight turn radius, making it easy to park. The large mirrors also ensure that there is no right side blind spot. It's worth noting that the mpg rating may not be entirely accurate due to the newness of the vehicle.

Our experience with our Cube Krom was great! When my wife was pregnant, it was so easy for her to get in and out of the vehicle. However, once our little guy was born, we found the space to be a bit limited. Safety was a top priority for us, especially with a newborn. While it may not have a lot of power, it is still quite sufficient and has great fuel efficiency, averaging 28 city and 33 highway. The seating is surprisingly spacious for four passengers, although seating five adults might be a bit tight. If you're placing a car seat in the middle, it can be a bit tight on both sides. The trunk space is also a bit limited, so keep that in mind when packing. The iPod interface could be more user-friendly, but there are plenty of cup holders! Plus, the car is sure to catch lots of attention. - Male, 26 years old.

I purchased this car about 3 weeks ago and I am extremely satisfied with it. After conducting some research, I decided to give the Cube a try and I must say, it is very nice. I highly recommend this car to anyone who is looking for a smooth ride and great fuel efficiency. I am currently getting about 32-33 mpg. Even my husband, who is 6 foot 2 inches tall and has big feet, finds the car comfortable to drive. He can easily move his foot from the gas pedal to the brake without any issues. The interior is surprisingly roomy for such a small car, making a powerful statement.

I test drove both the Soul Sport and the Soul+ and found that they didn't compare to the Cube. In my opinion, the Soul had a choppy ride and was less nimble than the Cube. Additionally, the Soul looked like every other car on the road. On the other hand, the Cube was incredibly comfortable, with a rear seat that felt like a couch or recliner. Nissan used the Maxima's foam rubber in all the seats, making them very comfortable. The controls were easy to use, and if you can't see the top 1/4 of the dash (as mentioned in an earlier review), there is seat height adjustment. I have found that there is minimal road noise at speed. However, the BEST part of the Cube is the MPG. I have consistently been getting 34-36 mpg combined city/hwy mileage. Additionally, the engine has a timing chain instead of the rubber ones that need replacing at 60,000 miles. Overall, I couldn't be happier with my Cube!

The car is really fun to drive and surprisingly quiet. I have been driving it for over a month now and I am getting an average of 33.6 mpg, which is great. I use it as a commuter car for my daily 84-mile round trip to work and it is perfect for that. Driving in Atlanta traffic can be a nightmare, but this little car makes it enjoyable. It has an excellent stereo system (I got the Rockford one), is very comfortable, and quiet. It has plenty of pep for my needs, and I average 80 mph daily when traffic is moving. I strongly suggest you try one. If you are looking for a good gas mileage, comfortable, and safe car, the Cube is the way to go. By the way, your friends might make fun of you, but you can laugh at them when gas hits $3.00 dollars + per gallon. Oh, and it only has an 11-gallon gas tank.

Despite having a reservation for a mid-size car with National at Sarasota airport, I was given a Nissan Cube upon arrival. Although it did not match my initial expectations, I decided to make the most of it and ended up driving over 600 miles in it. While the car's appearance may not have been to my taste, I found that Nissan's cvt transmission performed well, despite the car being underpowered. Although there was some wind noise at 75mph, I was able to manage without any issues. While the steering feedback was not as clear as I would have liked, I was still able to navigate the car without any problems. Overall, while the Nissan Cube may not have been my first choice, I was still able to enjoy my time with it and appreciate its unique features.

I agreed to my wife's request for a car with unique styling and better fuel efficiency. The car attracts a lot of attention, which is great because we have our business sign on the back window. Surprisingly, it gets an impressive 30.5mpg, which is a 50% improvement compared to our Pathfinder. This will save us $200 a month on her daily 140-mile roundtrip to her new office. I appreciate many of the features, especially those included in the SL package, although there are some that I am not fond of, as outlined below.

All in all, great job on your first effort! The interior layout is really nice and roomy. As someone who is 6'2 and 400 pounds, I felt comfortable. The controls are nicely laid out, but it's best to keep the gimmicky options to a minimum.
