2018 Hyundai Elantra gt problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Got back home and an hour later went to the car and the check engine light was on and it was vibrating and making a slight ticking noise. I am not sure what is going on with it. I change the sparkplugs a few months ago and get oil changes regularly never let things go past the needed time.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-27
- VIN: KMHH35LE7JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine is consuming excessive oil. The car has about 72k miles on it and I’ve owned it for almost 4 years. I called corporate Hyundai to tell them what’s going on after having multiple recalls fixed at the dealership, I was allowed to drive off the lot with no oil in my vehicle. Upon getting an appointment for the engine issue via corporate Hyundai, I was told to they would have to keep my car but have no loaner vehicles for me because they’re all out of commission for engine issues. I shortly received a call from them saying the engine isn’t covered under warranty and that they have to do a $942 cleaning and then if that doesn’t work, I need a new engine and Hyundai will do nothing to help me with this because I am not the first owner. I bought the car from a Hyundai dealership.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-11
- VIN: KMHH35LE1JU
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My vehicle has 55,000 miles, and the engine completely stalled while I was driving to the dealership to get it looked at. I had my oil change done 01/04/2024, and barely drove it since I dropped it off 01/11/2024. After weeks of waiting on any update, I was finally contacted that today, 01/26/2024, my car had no oil and this is why my engine failed. I have video evidence of the oil change, and the dealership is trying to place blame on the mechanic that has done the oil change. Upon further research, I am made aware of the class action lawsuit in CA, alleged that excess oil consumption is to blame for faulty engines.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Fire: 1

The vehicle was pulled to the side of the road where fire was observed emanating from the engine compartment. The flames spread to the rear of the motor home and the contact attempted to disengage the hitch. The contact sustained a hand injury but did not receive medical attention. The fire department extinguished the fire. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a lot where it was deemed totaled. The contact stated that the insurance company ruled the origin of the fire as the drive train of the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was approximately 19,000.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-26
- VIN: KMHH35LE9JU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Engine, power train, malfunction changing my speed control. No warning lights, first ticking noise from engine then knocking loud noise from engine. Noticed ticking about 4 days ago at first, today on freeway going 60-70 mph just changed to loud knocking, immediately engine warning starts to flash on dash board then speed just drops from 60-70 mph to 35 mph almost got hit by trucker and another car . Under 90 day warranty still from dealership (27 days since purchased) no license plate yet but insured and registered. Read many complaints of the same problems from numerous of people having the exact same problem. Very dangerous when vehicle stops accelerating on a steep pass on hwy with heavy traffic, this was almost an accident report to dispatch but luckily I reacted fast enough to swerve to the side before hitting the vehicle behind me and missing 18 wheeler trying to get to the right shoulder because theirs no space on left just concrete dividers! To close for comfort I can imagine what really can happen to someone that can't react as quickly as I did. Feeling like a victim their is no way they were not aware of this problem that has happened to many others when it is coming from a Chrysler dealership after reading so many complaints and reviews. I wish I would of known before hand ️ I would of not even bothered but now this is what I'm dealing with instead of feeling safe and comfortable being in a reliable, gas efficient vehicle that I just purchased for $30,000 and my jeep as a down payment not happy with dealership nor product. Who do I look to, when insurance or dealership can't protect me from situations like this it's not fair to someone that's struggling day by day paycheck to paycheck and this happens and now on waiting list until December so dealership is able to take a look at it. This should be most definitely brought to attention!!!
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-19
- VIN: KMHH35LE9JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I have noticed over the last year or so that the engine was burning oil. This was indicated by Express Oil Change multiple times during oil changes, including today. The oil level today didn't even register on the dipstick, so it seems this is getting worse. I can get oil change records on request from the above company.
STEERING,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-30
- VIN: KMHH35LE3JU
- Components: STEERING,ENGINE
- Summary: My 2018 ELANTRAGT was stolen due to Hundaes ineptitude and refusal to put in proper safety features. My car has been recovered but Hyundai does not have enough parts to supply this current crisis so my car will be in the shop for a minimum six weeks prior to being sent back to Hyundai dealership for the software upgrade that they are using as a fix. I don’t think this is enough on behalf of Hyundai. My car has lost resale value between 20 and 40%. I believe Hyundai needs to make proper compensation to me as a consumer. Additionally, my car was stolen in Oakland California at night and I. Stranded due to excessive call volume and had to go to downtown Oakland to one police plaza at night as a 60 year old widow with bad feet. I would like to see some support coming from your department as Hundaes position seems to be to make this a consumer issue that we are all financially responsible for.

LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-19
- VIN: KMHH35LE4JU
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The collision warning system has failed 4 or 5 times since I bought the car new in March of 2019. When the system stops working, the warning "Check BSD" appears on the driver's display. A couple of times the system started working without service. Other times service was required. The last time Hyundai service said the system went out of calibration. No explanation of how that would occur. They re-calibrated the system. Of course, once the system stops working, I have to remember that I won't get a warning when changing lanes or parking, so I must be sure to use extra careful. (I always look when I change lanes, but the warning system gives me extra confidence. I am sure many other people just rely on the system.)
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-30
- VIN: KMHH35LE4JU
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: We were driving the car and all of a sudden it would only go 30 mph and starting making a noise, pulled over and car would not go anymore. I took to a shop authorized from my carmax care program and it was diagnosed as rod bearings broken in the engine. This is a know issue with this model and Hyundia extended the warranty due to know issue. We were then advised to take to a dealer since a warranty issue, when it got there and they looked at it and the repair shop called them to tell them they broke it down to failure the dealer is now trying to charge me 8 hrs labor to look at. This is not a my issue , its a manufacture issue so I should not have to pay all this money to have same diagnostic I reported to Hyuandi headquarters and also reported the shop. Someone needs to fix this issue my case # with Hyundai is 20400619
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-15
- VIN: KMHH55LC8JU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: My vehicle is a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT sport. The side walls on the Hankook Ventis S1 Noble 2 tires are cracking. The tires lose air constantly and cannot be driven on for a fear of a blowout. There has been a recall for this same make and model of tire just not this size for the same problem. This tire needs to be recalled before someone is hurt from a collision.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-11
- VIN: KMHH35LE8JU
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On July 11, 2022 I was driving home when the MIL warning started flashing on my dashboard, and then my car began to stall. I was able to drive the car home and then have it towed to a local shop, who said that my oil was nearly gone and refilled it. The shop recommended that I take my car to the Hyundai dealership to have it checked out as it should have had at least 200 more miles before it needed an oil change. This is supported by my Hyundai dealership's sticker stating that my next oil change was due August 15 or at 52350 miles. As of today, July 23, my car has 52,209 miles on it. On Monday, July 18 I dropped off my car at the Killeen Servicemax center and asked them to run a diagnostic check and they couldn't find anything wrong with the car. My service advisor never spoke to me in person about my concerns and wouldn't answer my calls or text messages. My concern is that my car is burning far more oil than it should, and makes me want to check the oil level every month. I did recently renew my safety sticker for my registration and the car passed. I did research online and saw that there are pending lawsuits in California for 2018 hyundais' excessive oil consumption. I don't feel safe driving my car anymore. Thank you.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-05-16
- VIN: KMHH35LE7JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine seized and turned off unexpectedly and would not restart for hours. When it did start up a few seconds later it turned off again without driving this time. The battery, gas and oil were fine. It is now very very noisy and undrivable. There was a light ticking prior, but nothing concerning or I haven't heard most cars do. Yes, available for inspection. I was very lucky I had hardly pulled out of my parking spot. If this had happened while driving in the street or freeway I could have caused an accident. It hasn't seized again, but I am not driving except to the dealer who said the engine needs to replaced and is not honoring the warranty. There was a recall on this model that stated what is doing now was the reason for the recall. They replaced some cable, but it did nothing for the issue. No warnings prior besides the light ticking which is a normal characteristic of Hyundais, and I experienced this first hand with my last Hyundai Elantra model, but it did not ever have issues.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-28
- VIN: KMHH35LE7JU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: On Thursday evening, 4/28/22, I noticed engine knocking, and engine died while driving. Checked oil, and there was no oil in the car. Added oil, drove car to work the following day. Still engine noise, and dying on freeway. I never had any "check engine" or "low oil" warning lights come on to aleart me of any issue. The car only has 57K miles on it. Took the car straight to the dealership, and they are saying I need a new engine since they found metalic pieces in the oil. I know therer are other Hyundai recalls and lawsuits for engine problems, but not for this year/model. Service center said they are filing the warranty paperwork with the AutoNation Gold Extended Warranty, and I should expect a call today 5/5/22 to find out the status. Not sure why they are not using the Hyundai Powertrain warranty. (2nd owner, should be 60K milkes)
ENGINE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-01
- VIN: KMHH35LE1JU
- Components: ENGINE,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Oil drips on driveway. Warning sensors for blind spots disfunctional.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-25
- VIN: KMHH35LE2JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The connecting rod bearing in cylinder 1 is bad and I noticed online alot of other models were listed with the same problem but not my model. My engine block needs to be replaced. Car has not been inspected by hyundai but just a licensed local mechanic because the dealerships said it would be months before they can look at it.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-04
- VIN: KMHH35LE5JU

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-24
- VIN: KMHH35LE1JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: At 77,000 miles, with immaculate care taken of the engine with regular maintenance (and only 2 weeks since the previous oil change), the engine failed at the end of an 11.5 hour road trip and left me stranded on the side of a busy highway. This vehicle has the Hyundai Nu 2.0 GDi engine, which has been recalled in other vehicles for this same issue (and sometimes resulting fires), but not THIS vehicle.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-02
- VIN: KMHH35LE7JU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: On December2, 2021 I was driving on the freeway when my engine made a high pitched sound followed by a banging sound inside the engine. There were no warning messages or symptoms prior to the incident. I immediately pulled off the freeway as much as I could. Then the engine just quit running. It was terrifying as I was in morning rush hour traffic and couldn't pull all the way off the road. I called a tow company, then my local Hyundai repair shop. I was told by them that they wouldn't be able to look at it for 6 weeks! I ended up having it towed to a local auto repair shop in my neighborhood and was told that there was a complete engine failure. As the car was 3,000 miles over warranty the Hyundai dealer would look at it but it would take at least 2 months. I still owe money on the car and need a car for work so decided to have it repaired. The cost of that repair was 8,578.00, in addition I had rental cars for a month.

TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-25
- VIN: KMHH55LC1JU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: The tires came stock on this model car and at the 30K mile mark I noticed cracking or splitting in the sidewalls of each of the tires. I am not aware if the manufacture, Hankook, has released any statements or confirmation about this issue but the issue occurred well with the 50K mile warranty window. This was shocking to see and could have been very dangerous to myself and other drivers had the cracking sidewalls on any of the tires failed or caused a blowout on the road. Because of the nature of this issue there were no warning signs. Luckily I caught this issue before it contributed to any accidents or harm.

I have the 1.6T Sport and I must say, it's a great balance of fun and comfort. The acceleration is strong and in the sport-driving mode with the shifters, you won't be disappointed. The ride is tight but not overbearing, which makes for smiles around every curve. Everyone who gets in the car is really impressed with the interior design. Although the gas mileage is a bit under what is marketed, it's more of my heavy foot because the car is so fun to drive. On the highway with cruise control, it beats expectations. I was considering the GTI but the functionality, electronics, overall look, known reliability provided a better overall value of the Hyundai versus the incumbent.
-
I love my car! It always puts a smile on my face when I take off from every stop light. I even drove around to find some windy roads just to toss it around, and boy does it handle those twists and turns like a dream. While it may not be the fastest car I've ever driven, it's perfect for those leisurely Sunday drives in the mountains.
-
I understand that many people recommend the 1.6 t, and I agree that it is a great option. However, I personally purchased the 2.0 base on a budget and have found it to be more than adequate. Surprisingly, it is quite zippy! One tip I have is to run it on premium fuel for even better response than you might expect.
-
This car is a solid performer with a sporty feel, comfortable seating, and excellent fuel economy. I have been driving the redesigned Hyundai Elantra GT for almost two years now and I must say, the more I drive it, the more I like it. However, there is one caveat. The front end of the 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT has a cheap, very exposed plastic grill that is not protected by a solid bumper like on my 2004 Hyundai Elantra. Unfortunately, someone backed into my car while parking and punched a hole through the plastic grill. This has resulted in at least a $500 repair cost, which is a lot for someone like me who lives on a fixed income. Despite this, I would still highly recommend this model to my friends.
-
This HYUNDAI model is brand new and I've only had it for about six weeks. So far, it's been great! It's peppy and has enough speed to handle the highway, even though it doesn't have a lot of power. The only issue I've had is that the passenger side seat belt sensor is very sensitive. It sets off the 'seat belt not fastened' warning light and signal when I put my smartphone or a bag of fast food on the seat, which can be hard to shut off while driving. However, it's been getting me great gas mileage! The main reason I bought it is because of the lifetime warranty on the HYBRID battery and system. I'm not a fan of working with new car dealers, but the warranty and gas mileage made it worth it. Ask me in a year or two how the car is working out...

I have owned the vehicle for 13 months and it has 9000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had several serious issues with it. Firstly, at 2000 miles, 2 tires developed bubbles and as they were discontinued, I had to replace all 4 tires. Then, at 5000 miles later, I had to replace 2 more tires. Secondly, the transmission keeps slipping and thirdly, the wipers keep hitting the hood. The car has already been painted twice. Fourthly, the car drives terribly in rain and snow, even after upgrading to better tires. I was advised to downsize to 17 inch tires and purchase taller profile tires. Lastly, the navigation system is terrible and always wrong. I use my phone (MapQuest) instead. Don't get me wrong, I like the car, but the issues listed above are enough for me to consider selling it.
