2013 Hyundai Elantra gt problems
The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).
First generation (J1; 1990)
The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.
It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.
The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 5NPDH4AEXDH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The car failed to go into the park. The vehicle was in park and continued to roll, and we placed the emergency brake on. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. The dealership replaced it with a new shift cable clip, and now the car operates. We noticed the vehicle had a previous recall that was repaired in 2019. The shift clip repair is for the same clip that failed, resulting in being unable to shift in gear. When asked why we were charged for a recall repair that didn't last, we were told we could only fix a repair once and that we needed to pay. The concern is if this vehicle was Parked on an incline I could roll forward running into something and someone. From the record there was roughly 40k miles between recall repair and the failure of the clip that was supposed to fix this problem.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-23
- VIN: KMHD35LE0DU
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: At approximately 67,000 miles the airbag light on the instrument cluster has become permanently illuminated. This appears to be a common issue, causing Hyundai to extend the warranty on the clock spring; however, the GT model is not covered by this technical service bulletin. This issue may impact the deployment of the airbags and so should be a safety recall rather than a TSB which doesn't even cover all affected models.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-01
- VIN: KMHD35LE5DU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: In the winter of 2024 I became aware, during a routine pre-trip inspection under the hood of my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT, that the level of brake fluid was low enough not to be visible in the "overflow" container. About a quarter of a quart of brake fluid was then added. I then began checking the brake fluid level often and noticed that over time, I had to add brake fluid at least once a week. The problem increased to the point that I was going through a quart of brake fluid each month. In the meantime, I attempted to get various mechanics to find the leak but had a hard time convincing anyone I was leaking brake fluid as THERE WAS NEVER A WARNING LAMP OR MESSAGE ACTIVATED. After paying for other "suggested" repairs such as replacing brakes the leak continued and at times the brakes became squishy until finally a mechanic acknowledged a leak coming from the area of the ABS module actuator which he said was "fried". My car had to be in a Hyundai shop 90 miles away for three weeks awaiting the ABS actuator part and repairs as I was advised the vehicle was dangerous and I could lose the use of my brakes. Again, this issue would have never been highlighted if I had not been diligent about checking the brake fluid and could have ended with much more serious consequences than inconvenience and expense. Again, there was never a warning light indicator to emphasize a potential hazard.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-05
- VIN: KMHDH4AE9DU
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Hyundai recall 251 happened in Sept. 2023 and a remedy was not made available until summer 2024. This was a "park outside due to fire risk" recall and a completely unacceptable amount of time to put families in danger. Fast forward to when the remedy was available. I went to my dealer, ALM Hyundai West, who completed the recall. A week later I checked the Hyundai website and the recall was not marked complete. ALM told me I needed to come back in so they could confirm it was done correctly and take pictures. I wasn't happy but I went back and they took their pictures. That was a month ago. My recall is STILL not marked as complete and ALM is so disorganized, I am not sure if my car was actually fixed at this point.

- Summary: There is a on going issue with clock spring failing on 2011-2014 Hyundai models. My model is not covered under their extended warranty cause I have a hatchback version of the Elantra, which uses the same parts. I have already replaced my clock spring at 2019 and again the issue has come in 2024. My air bag light is on, my car horn doesn't work and buttons on the steering wheel. Feel like this is a huge safety issue as I cannot communicate with other drives with my horn and I do not have a safety net of air bags deploying when a accident happens.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-17
- VIN: KMHDH4AEXDU
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The steering wheel clicks and feels loose when it moves. The repair is to replace the Steering Coupler a piece of plastic for $5 but it will cost $300 or more for my mechanic since it is a 2-3 hour job. This should be replaced by the Dealer for free since the part is made to wear out and be defective
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-19
- VIN: KMHD35LE7DU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine of my 2013 Hyundai Elantra GT failed due to a known piston-slap issue, and it is available for inspection for a limited time before being sold to a junkyard. This failure occurred suddenly while I was on the highway, putting my safety and the safety of others at risk as I had to maneuver the car to the side of the road amidst heavy traffic. The problem has been confirmed by both the Hyundai dealership and an independent service center, who diagnosed the piston-slap issue and found the engine filled with sludge, a known issue with these engines. Despite having 28 documented service records and regular oil changes, Hyundai denied the warranty claim, citing engine neglect. Hyundai representatives have inspected the vehicle and provided a technical bulletin documenting this defect. Prior to the failure, there were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms indicating a problem with the engine.

I had a great time shopping for my car and finally decided on the Elantra GT. The main factors that influenced my decision were the affordable price and the spacious cargo area. I was a bit concerned about fitting two car seats in the back seat, but to my delight, both fit comfortably and the middle cup holder can still flip down. I won't be showing that feature to my kids though! The car handled well in the winter ice and snow, which was a relief. When traveling with four people, we do have some trouble fitting everything into the car, but I think a roof top bag will help solve this problem. I didn't get roof rails, so I am slightly worried about damage to the door areas where the straps will press, but we'll see. Overall, I still love the car after 2.5 years.
-
Congratulations on your recent car purchase! It sounds like you did your research and made a great decision in choosing the GT over the Prius. The GT's price, standard features, warranty, and quietness make it a fantastic choice, especially for around town and short road trips. As you mentioned, the suspension is on the sportier side, which gives the car a solid feel. Overall, it's great to hear that you're enjoying your new car!

I test drove all the available 5 door hatchbacks on the market and ended up with the Elantra GT. It was a tough decision between it and the Ford Focus, but what swayed me was the stylish interior. The Elantra GT sets the bar for style and good looks, and the warranties and standard feature set are unbeatable. I opted for the touch and go package, which includes keyless entry with push button start, sport suspension and 17 inch wheels. Hyundai has come a long way since the Excel, and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Toyota and Honda should take note, especially when it comes to styling. Hyundais are much better looking, both inside and out.
-
Your car sounds amazing! With 63000 miles on it and no repairs needed, it's clear that you take great care of it. Even living on a dirt road doesn't seem to have affected it. And it's great to hear that it handles well in ice and snow. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

Edmunds sent me an email to 'update' my review yet again, but I still own and love my car with no mechanical issues! As a first-time Hyundai owner, I continue to be impressed going on year 3. I have yet to experience any mechanical or quality issues with this little GT. Recently, we went on a weekend road trip and averaged 39.6 miles per gallon. The car is still tight as a drum with no creaks, rattles, or noises whatsoever. It has been through 3 Minnesota winters, including one where the temperature hit -30F outside, and it performed just like any other day. The only possible downside is the cost of the low profile 17' tires, which are more expensive than a 195/65 R-15 tire by anywhere from $20-40 per tire. When the time comes, I will replace the OEM stuff with 15' wheels and tires, which will be more resistant to wheel scratches from potholes as a bonus! This car has been incredible so far. I am 6'3' and 175 pounds, and I fit comfortably. Better yet, I can fit 3 more 6'+ people with no problem. The ride quality, engine noise, and road noise all exceed my expectations in a very good way. I also own a 2001 Ford Focus ZX3, and the difference is staggering. The attention to detail and material quality really sets it apart from a lot of cars. Nothing feels cheap (and this is a Hyundai! Man, they've come a long way), and nothing creaks or pops going down the road. I'm used to these small, 4-cylinder econoboxes being complete rattletraps, but not anymore. It also performs well in snow. I couldn't be happier!

In May 2017, I purchased a used 2013 Hyundai Elantra with 106k miles for $8,000. At the time, I was thrilled with the amount of car and features I got for the price. However, after about 8 months, I noticed a loud ticking noise coming from the car during the winter. I took it to a local shop and was informed that there were metal flakes in the oil, likely from a spun bearing, and that I would need a new engine. Unfortunately, my car had 123k miles on it and was out of warranty, so Hyundai was unable to assist with the repair. I was frustrated that a car that was only five years old required a new engine. After some research, I discovered that other Elantra sedan and hatchback owners had experienced the same issue with the 1.8L engine, with many of them receiving replacements under warranty. Although Hyundai has not issued a recall, I know of two other Elantra owners who had to replace their 1.8L engine. While they are decent cars, I would caution against purchasing an Elantra with the 1.8L engine if it is out of warranty. Ultimately, I decided to trade in my Elantra for a 2018 Corolla iM.

I bought this vehicle brand new just 3 months ago, but unfortunately, I've had to take it in for its 7th or 8th visit. The steering system has been giving me some trouble, and it's been a bit of a hassle. On the highway, I noticed that the steering was a bit off, and it would pull to the left if I wasn't holding on tight. This was a bit scary, and I had a few close calls. It took a few attempts for the shop to get it right, but they eventually fixed it enough to where I can tolerate it. Unfortunately, I'm now having some engine trouble, and it's been taking a bit longer than usual for the engine to wind down when I shift into neutral. It's definitely not ideal, and I'm feeling a bit frustrated.

I compared several vehicles that were reported to have decent gas mileage, but ultimately chose this one because I really liked its styling. I was hoping to get at least 28-30mpg, but I'm only getting 25. My previous vehicle was a 1998 Subaru Legacy wagon, and even with my heavier foot, I was able to get 23mpg doing the same driving. I'm currently using eco boost and driving more conservatively, but I'm still getting what I consider to be poor gas mileage for this vehicle. Despite this, I still love it. The only issue I have is that I can't see the hood when I'm seated in the car, which makes it difficult to judge how close I am to something. However, I've only had it for a month so far.

The 2013 Elantra GT was purchased on 31st August 2013 and has been a great vehicle overall. However, starting issues began to arise on 15th November 2013, which required multiple attempts of pressing the brake and start button. Although Roadside Assistance was called once due to being stranded, the issue was resolved by tightening the positive battery terminal. The negative terminal was also tightened during a visit to the dealership on the same day. Despite dealership tests showing no problems, the issue persisted and required 19 attempts to start the vehicle on one occasion. This has been a frustrating experience, but the vehicle will be taken to the dealership for a second time on Tuesday 10th December.

I am disappointed with my gas mileage. However, I am confident that I made the right choice in my vehicle. Despite only getting 27mpg, I am satisfied with my decision and do not regret it.
