Hyundai Elantra gt problems

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common Hyundai Elantra gt problems

The Hyundai Elantra GT is a popular hatchback known for its sporty qualities and clean aesthetic. However, like any vehicle, it has had its share of common problems over the years, primarily affecting its engine and transmission.

One of the most problematic years for the Hyundai Elantra GT is 2013, which has the highest number of overall complaints.

Another year with significant problems is 2016. The 2016 model suffers from lower bearing failure, which can cause engine issues, and transmission problems, leading to higher repair costs and earlier failures compared to other models.

The 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Elantra GT models generally have fewer reported reliability issues, with problems not typically arising until around 60,000 miles.

In summary, the Hyundai Elantra GT has had some problematic years, particularly 2013 and 2016, which have higher-than-average reliability issues related to engine and transmission problems. Potential buyers should be cautious when considering these model years and consider the potential costs and risks associated with these issues.

How reliable is a Hyundai Elantra GT?

The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 9% for the Hyundai Elantra GT, compared to an average of 11% for compact cars and 12% for all vehicle models. The average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years of a vehicle.

What is the main problem of the Hyundai Elantra?

There have been reports of window regulator failure, weak and foggy headlights, difficulty steering, and even loss of brake power. If these problems are ones that you have, we suggest taking your vehicle into the dealership or to the nearest mechanic.

Why did Hyundai discontinue Elantra GT?

Hyundai said the decision was "due to [an] expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue and Kona." It's a shame that Hyundai is sacrificing the Elantra GT, because we always viewed it as a great crossover alternative thanks to its spacious rear seats, cavernous cargo capacity, and strong visibility.

How many miles does a Hyundai Elantra GT last?

How many miles can a Hyundai Elantra last? A Hyundai Elantra can easily last 150,000 to 250,000 miles with regular maintenance and good driving practices. If you drive around 15,000 miles per year, it will survive 13 to 17 years before needing costly repairs or breaking down.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-10
  • VIN: KMHD35LH7GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to formally request an urgent investigation into a potential recall for my vehicle, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. I purchased this vehicle in 2017 and completed my payments in March 2023. However, in late July, I experienced a catastrophic failure that has rendered my vehicle inoperable. While driving home from work, I suddenly experienced a complete loss of power. My car slowed down significantly, forcing me to pull over to the side of the road. Once I came to a stop, the engine failed to restart, despite the dashboard lights and radio functioning normally. It has now been over two months since my vehicle has been non-operational. After taking it to a certified repair shop for diagnosis, I was informed that the engine is seized. The estimated cost for repairs exceeds $13,000, which is financially unfeasible for me. This situation not only poses a significant financial burden but also raises serious safety concerns. A sudden engine seizure while driving can lead to dangerous situations, potentially endangering both the driver and other road users. Given the severity of this issue and its implications, I urge the NHTSA to investigate the possibility of a recall for engine-related issues affecting the 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. It is crucial that affected owners receive the necessary support and that safety concerns are addressed promptly. Thank you for your immediate attention to this serious matter. I look forward to your prompt response.

We recommend you contact the manager of the service department or the General Manager of the dealership at (408) 445-1500 to discuss your concerns with there not being any availability at their location." Latest negative Hyundai Elantra gt car reviews

  1. Mitchel DuBuque 2025-10-22

    Vehicle year: 2017

Although my car is three years old, I am disappointed with its gas mileage. I have noticed that it is much worse than any of my previous small or mid-sized vehicles. Additionally, I have experienced handling issues and braking problems on freeway on and off ramps. Despite these issues, I am confident that I can find a solution to improve my car's performance. I am considering changing the wheels, but I will need to research whether this will void the warranty. I understand that there may be some challenges, but I am determined to find a solution that works for me. I believe that with the right modifications, my car can be both safe and efficient. As a loyal Hyundai customer, I am committed to finding a solution that meets my needs.

  2. Davin Carter 2025-09-25

    Vehicle year: 2013

I purchased my Elantra GT new and have driven it for four years, putting about 70K miles on it. For the most part, the car has been comfortable, reliable, and trouble-free. However, I have experienced some issues with the car, such as the rear quarter-panel window trim falling off and the clutch chattering/slipping. Although the transmission input shaft seal was defective/leaking, which is covered by the Hyundai 10 year/100K warranty, Hyundai refused to honor the warranty and pay for the repair. Despite these issues, I have found the car to be comfortable and reliable. If you are considering buying a Hyundai vehicle, I would recommend doing your research and considering a manufacturer who stands behind their product and their warranty commitments. Think Honda, Toyota, or Mazda. It seems like they may not be prioritizing customer satisfaction with their Hyundai vehicles. As a loyal multiple-car Hyundai customer, I am disappointed and no longer feel any loyalty towards the brand. I have found that Honda offers superior products and customer service. If you are considering purchasing a Hyundai vehicle, you may want to explore other options.

  3. Baron Wyman 2025-08-06

    Vehicle year: 2020

I purchased a 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT Sport in late September 2018 with only 170 miles on it. Unfortunately, I experienced some transmission problems when I reached 800 miles, but thankfully it was covered under warranty. However, I am now facing another issue with the engine at 4300 miles and it is currently in the shop. The dealership informed me that the engine was losing compression and had a bad head gasket, along with some other issues. Although they initially denied my warranty claim, I have sought legal assistance to resolve this situation. While my experience has been frustrating, I would still encourage anyone considering a Hyundai or Kia to explore all their options before making a decision.

  4. Leland Monahan 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2013

I had a frustrating experience with Edmunds.com because I relied on their good reviews of the car. We purchased a 2013 Elantra GT 8 months ago and have barely driven it for 2k miles. A few months ago, we started hearing a tapping noise that went away after the engine warmed up. Unfortunately, the noise became a full-blown knocking deep in the engine that becomes more frequent as the car accelerates. We took it to a Hyundai dealership and were told that there was a lot of metal in the oil and the engine was basically useless. The only solution is to replace it. The dealership has blamed this problem on poor owner maintenance. After further research, I discovered that engine failure for 2011-2018 Elantra's with the Nu 1.8L model is very common but Hyundai refuses to admit that it's a manufacturing defect. However, this only seems to be the case in the US. Canadian owners of the Nu 1.8L engine get theirs replaced upon experiencing the knocking and metal shavings in the oil--at no cost to the owner (our Hyundai dealer quoted $6k for the replacement). This indicates that Hyundai knows and acknowledges the defect but won't extend the replacement to the US because we don't have consumer protection laws like Canada. In short, I'm stuck with a car that the dealership will give $1000 as trade-in (We still owe $7000), or I can spend $6000 to replace the engine. I'm considering joining in the class-action lawsuit against Hyundai. **** Update 2021 **** My daughter has been driving the car a little every day. We never go on highways or freeways and never leave town with the Elantra. We don't go over 45mph. The car still has a loud nasty knocking while running. I change the oil every 3 months, even though I want to give up and let the car self-destruct. We have joined a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai, which means that we have to keep this car until the lawsuit is resolved. Hopefully, that will be in April or May of 2021. I don't know what will happen if the suit is successful.Whatever happens, I'm going to get the car fixed and sell it as soon as possible. Although I've had some issues with my Hyundai, I'm hopeful that things will improve. The dealership has been working hard to fix the problems, but we've had some trouble with the check-engine lights. My daughter is now handling the issue, and we're hoping for the best. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend Hyundai, I'm sure that there are many people who have had positive experiences with their cars. As for my daughter's car, we're still working on finding a solution to the check-engine light problem, but we're hopeful that things will work out in the end. After my out-of-control tirade at the dealership, they kept the car overnight and finally traced the problem to a plastic part near the gas tank fuel outlet. Although I can't remember the exact name of the part, it had cracked and was disrupting the fuel system vacuum enough to throw the CEL. Despite the fact that it took 3 months and more than 5 visits to the dealership, they finally fixed it. However, the hatchback won't open now, and the latch is stuck and can't be released with the key or the manual trigger. We're not sure how much it will cost to fix, but we're hoping for the best.

  5. Leone Harris 2025-06-16

    Vehicle year: 2015

I've had my 2014 Hyundai Elantra GT with manual transmission for about 4.5 years and it currently has 91k on it. Let me start with the positives: the cabin is quiet and solid, and the materials inside are of good quality. While the handling is tolerable, I do feel that German cars handle better. Now, onto the negatives: unfortunately, my catalytic converters went bad and I'm not sure why. The interesting part is that I have to buy from the dealer and the assembly cost is $990. There is one approved aftermarket CAT, but it does not have the O2 port. Living in California, the state always finds a way to get your money. Additionally, the car is a bit underpowered. It does get a little more pick up with premium unleaded, but that adds cost and I specifically went for a car that ran on unleaded regular. Overall, I was happy with the car until I had to sink $1k into it because of the CAT problem.

  1. Elvis Carroll 2025-10-22

    Vehicle year: 2016

I bought this car mainly for its reliability and the spacious trunk that allows me to haul things around. The style package that I have added to the car includes rims and fog lamps, which many other Hyundai owners have complimented me on. I have even added a bike rack to the car roof, but I can also fit a bike in the back with the seats folded down. The interior is basic but nice, and I prefer the stock controls over the tech package as they are simple and easy to use. The 2.0 motor is very peppy, and the automatic transmission keeps the revs low for fuel economy. The sports suspension makes the car very flat around corners at speed. Although I only have two complaints, one being that you have to get the bare bones base model to get the excellent 6-speed manual, and the other being that the center armrest likes to slide forward if you are using it as a support to get in and out of the car. Additionally, the A-pillar is too wide and blocks your view at times. Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and spacious vehicle.

I love this car! I've been driving it since June and I still love it! It's sporty, comfortable, and cute. There's lots of room with the hatchback and the sound system is great. I plan on keeping this car for many years to come!

The Elantra GT N Line in a 6 speed is so much fun to drive! It handles great and looks fantastic, with a touch of understated style that's perfect if you want to have a good time without drawing too much attention. When you push it, it's fast enough and sticks to the road like glue. Well done, Hyundai! Now, let's bring the full N to America!

  4. John Morissette 2025-10-15

My wife and I were looking for a sportier yet practical car to replace her Kia Soul. After considering the Civic Hatchback and Mazda 3, we found a 2018 Elantra GT base (2.0 w/ 6A) with the heated seats/tech package for the end-of-year bargain price of $17.5k after rebates. This was a great deal, as it was $5-6k less than any similarly equipped Civic or Mazda 3. We also test drove an Elantra GT Sport (1.6T w/ 7DCT), which was quicker, but not remarkably so. We took it on a road trip from Oregon to Nevada for Thanksgiving, driving through many twisty mountain backroads through the Cascades and Sierras. The handling was excellent, and the power was just fine for mountain driving and passing. Most professional reviewers prefer the 1.6T in the N-line, but the 2.0L's 160HP is satisfying for an economy car. The cabin feels expensive, and the heated seats+dual zone climate control are well worth the extra cost on a snowy winter day. The ergonomics are outstanding for taller drivers (I'm 6'3

I was deciding between this and a Honda hatch, and I'm so glad I chose this one! It's the best car for the value. You get so many standard features that you wouldn't find in a Civic or a Corolla. The large screen for your radio dash is perfect for backing up, and the 6-speed shifting is easy. The car hugs the road like a suction cup, and you don't feel the turns as much. Of course, there's Bluetooth with your steering wheel mount, and the rims look sweet instead of hub caps. Everything is pretty nice for the value. Now, here are the cons: I'm having an issue with a very noticeable vibration and an intermittent loss of RPM, for example when I'm sitting at a red light, the car wants to quit even while the gear is in neutral. I took it back to the dealer where I purchased it to get it looked at back in August of 2018, but their technician only replicated it once and couldn't get it to replicate again. The vibration still exists and maybe tried to quit on me once since then. On the issue with the front windshield wiper where people can't flip it up to wash the car, it's not a defect, it's a hidden feature. The manual booklet tells you how to get into 'maintenance mode' where you can flip it up like you normally see. The front bumper is made out of cheap plastic, and since mine is white, there are lots of chips and scratches on it already. Once you program your radio preset, you can't delete it. The only thing you can do is reset your radio dashboard. My commute is pretty long, so I average between 33 to 36 mpg, and that's at 75% highway and 25% city. But if it's more city and less highway, it'll get about 29-30. Besides the issue I'm having, you get a lot of car for your money, and I still love it. This car is really not a GT unless you bump up to the Sport trim level. I just call this an Elantra Hatchback.
