Hyundai Elantra gt problems

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Common Hyundai Elantra gt problems

The Hyundai Elantra GT is a popular hatchback known for its sporty qualities and clean aesthetic. However, like any vehicle, it has had its share of common problems over the years, primarily affecting its engine and transmission.

One of the most problematic years for the Hyundai Elantra GT is 2013, which has the highest number of overall complaints.

Another year with significant problems is 2016. The 2016 model suffers from lower bearing failure, which can cause engine issues, and transmission problems, leading to higher repair costs and earlier failures compared to other models.

The 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 Elantra GT models generally have fewer reported reliability issues, with problems not typically arising until around 60,000 miles.

In summary, the Hyundai Elantra GT has had some problematic years, particularly 2013 and 2016, which have higher-than-average reliability issues related to engine and transmission problems. Potential buyers should be cautious when considering these model years and consider the potential costs and risks associated with these issues.

How reliable is a Hyundai Elantra GT?

The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 9% for the Hyundai Elantra GT, compared to an average of 11% for compact cars and 12% for all vehicle models. The average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years of a vehicle.

What is the main problem of the Hyundai Elantra?

There have been reports of window regulator failure, weak and foggy headlights, difficulty steering, and even loss of brake power. If these problems are ones that you have, we suggest taking your vehicle into the dealership or to the nearest mechanic.

Why did Hyundai discontinue Elantra GT?

Hyundai said the decision was "due to [an] expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue and Kona." It's a shame that Hyundai is sacrificing the Elantra GT, because we always viewed it as a great crossover alternative thanks to its spacious rear seats, cavernous cargo capacity, and strong visibility.

How many miles does a Hyundai Elantra GT last?

How many miles can a Hyundai Elantra last? A Hyundai Elantra can easily last 150,000 to 250,000 miles with regular maintenance and good driving practices. If you drive around 15,000 miles per year, it will survive 13 to 17 years before needing costly repairs or breaking down.

  • VIN: KMHD35LH7GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to formally request an urgent investigation into a potential recall for my vehicle, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. I purchased this vehicle in 2017 and completed my payments in March 2023. However, in late July, I experienced a catastrophic failure that has rendered my vehicle inoperable. While driving home from work, I suddenly experienced a complete loss of power. My car slowed down significantly, forcing me to pull over to the side of the road. Once I came to a stop, the engine failed to restart, despite the dashboard lights and radio functioning normally. It has now been over two months since my vehicle has been non-operational. After taking it to a certified repair shop for diagnosis, I was informed that the engine is seized. The estimated cost for repairs exceeds $13,000, which is financially unfeasible for me. This situation not only poses a significant financial burden but also raises serious safety concerns. A sudden engine seizure while driving can lead to dangerous situations, potentially endangering both the driver and other road users. Given the severity of this issue and its implications, I urge the NHTSA to investigate the possibility of a recall for engine-related issues affecting the 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. It is crucial that affected owners receive the necessary support and that safety concerns are addressed promptly. Thank you for your immediate attention to this serious matter. I look forward to your prompt response.

Latest negative Hyundai Elantra gt car reviews

  1. Leland Monahan 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2013

I had a frustrating experience with Edmunds.com because I relied on their good reviews of the car. We purchased a 2013 Elantra GT 8 months ago and have barely driven it for 2k miles. A few months ago, we started hearing a tapping noise that went away after the engine warmed up. Unfortunately, the noise became a full-blown knocking deep in the engine that becomes more frequent as the car accelerates. We took it to a Hyundai dealership and were told that there was a lot of metal in the oil and the engine was basically useless. The only solution is to replace it. The dealership has blamed this problem on poor owner maintenance. After further research, I discovered that engine failure for 2011-2018 Elantra's with the Nu 1.8L model is very common but Hyundai refuses to admit that it's a manufacturing defect. However, this only seems to be the case in the US. Canadian owners of the Nu 1.8L engine get theirs replaced upon experiencing the knocking and metal shavings in the oil--at no cost to the owner (our Hyundai dealer quoted $6k for the replacement). This indicates that Hyundai knows and acknowledges the defect but won't extend the replacement to the US because we don't have consumer protection laws like Canada. In short, I'm stuck with a car that the dealership will give $1000 as trade-in (We still owe $7000), or I can spend $6000 to replace the engine. I'm considering joining in the class-action lawsuit against Hyundai. **** Update 2021 **** My daughter has been driving the car a little every day. We never go on highways or freeways and never leave town with the Elantra. We don't go over 45mph. The car still has a loud nasty knocking while running. I change the oil every 3 months, even though I want to give up and let the car self-destruct. We have joined a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai, which means that we have to keep this car until the lawsuit is resolved. Hopefully, that will be in April or May of 2021. I don't know what will happen if the suit is successful.Whatever happens, I'm going to get the car fixed and sell it as soon as possible. Although I've had some issues with my Hyundai, I'm hopeful that things will improve. The dealership has been working hard to fix the problems, but we've had some trouble with the check-engine lights. My daughter is now handling the issue, and we're hoping for the best. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend Hyundai, I'm sure that there are many people who have had positive experiences with their cars. As for my daughter's car, we're still working on finding a solution to the check-engine light problem, but we're hopeful that things will work out in the end. After my out-of-control tirade at the dealership, they kept the car overnight and finally traced the problem to a plastic part near the gas tank fuel outlet. Although I can't remember the exact name of the part, it had cracked and was disrupting the fuel system vacuum enough to throw the CEL. Despite the fact that it took 3 months and more than 5 visits to the dealership, they finally fixed it. However, the hatchback won't open now, and the latch is stuck and can't be released with the key or the manual trigger. We're not sure how much it will cost to fix, but we're hoping for the best.

    Vehicle year: 2015

I've had my 2014 Hyundai Elantra GT with manual transmission for about 4.5 years and it currently has 91k on it. Let me start with the positives: the cabin is quiet and solid, and the materials inside are of good quality. While the handling is tolerable, I do feel that German cars handle better. Now, onto the negatives: unfortunately, my catalytic converters went bad and I'm not sure why. The interesting part is that I have to buy from the dealer and the assembly cost is $990. There is one approved aftermarket CAT, but it does not have the O2 port. Living in California, the state always finds a way to get your money. Additionally, the car is a bit underpowered. It does get a little more pick up with premium unleaded, but that adds cost and I specifically went for a car that ran on unleaded regular. Overall, I was happy with the car until I had to sink $1k into it because of the CAT problem.

  3. Akeem Kshlerin 2025-05-18

    Vehicle year: 2013

Hello! I wanted to share my recent experience with my 2013 Hyundai Elantra. At 78,000 miles, I noticed a loud engine tick and took it to the Hyundai dealer. Despite regular oil changes and no previous issues, I was told that the engine needed to be replaced due to metal filings found in the oil pan. Unfortunately, this was not covered under the 100,000 power train warranty as I was not the first owner. The cost of the new engine was $6500, not to mention the rental car fees and the months it would take to get the engine in. I did some research and found that many others had similar complaints. My advice to anyone considering purchasing a used Hyundai is to be cautious and do your research. Thank you for listening to my story!

  5. Deion Upton 2025-05-03

    Vehicle year: 2015

I purchased this car in 2018 with 60k miles on it. It had all the extras - bluetooth, sunroof, leather, navigation, and more. I really enjoyed driving it as it was small and economical. However, I was surprised when I blew a tire on a pothole, but I guess that comes with this type of car. I made sure to change the oil and keep up with regular maintenance. Unfortunately, one day I heard a slight knocking from the engine and by the time I made it to my destination, it was loud (like you could hear it across the parking lot). Apparently, there is a known problem that causes metal to enter the oil/pistons, ultimately rendering the engine useless. Although the car is under 100k miles, I am not the original owner so it is not covered under warranty. It has also not been recalled. I received a quote for a replacement of $3k-$4k, but unfortunately, there are no available engines due to high demand. Now it's just a nice looking driveway ornament. While this may not be everyone's experience, I know it's not singular.

Latest positive Hyundai Elantra gt car reviews

  1. Adelbert Gaylord 2025-07-07

    Vehicle year: 2015

Hey there! When I first got this car, I wasn't too sure about it since it wasn't my top pick. But boy, was I pleasantly surprised! Over time, it has really grown on us. The amount of get-up-and-go for a compact car is impressive, with 173hp, one of the highest in this class, especially for the price. Plus, it's lightweight, making it nimble and quick. Unlike the slow and boring Elantra sedan, this car is a blast to drive! I recently found out that Hyundai uses a special metal that's safer yet more lightweight than the traditional, which helps with performance and MPGs. The ride comfort is good compared to others in this class, although it can get a little drifty on certain surfaces due to being lightweight. It took me a while to get my seating position just right, but the seats are very comfortable with nice bolstering. One thing I love is the interior materials - they're easy to clean, good quality, and should hold up well long-term. The ergonomics are excellent in the Elantra GT, as are the quality of materials. After driving a luxury car as my previous vehicle, I am impressed with the fit and finish of this Hyundai. It has great cargo space, especially with the seats down, and the styling on the outside is unique as opposed to the sedan version. The GT has a lot of standard features, including fog lights and heated seats, and the warranty can't be beat. The only minor complaints I have are that the speakers could be a little better, although they're not awful by any means, and the key Fob looks a bit outdated. But overall, if you're considering cars like the Focus hatchback, Mazda 3 hatchback, Forte 5, VW Golf, etc., I think the Hyundai Elantra GT is definitely worth a look. You get a lot of bang for your buck, and it's a bit more rare than some of the other options out there. Thanks for reading!

    Vehicle year: 2015

UPDATE 12/19/17: Hi there! I just wanted to share an update on my car. It's been a year and a half since I purchased it and I've already put about 70,000 miles on it! I've taken it on 4-5 road trips up and down the east coast and now I'm averaging just under 1000 miles a week for everyday use. I know that's a lot, but I'm happy to report that the car is holding up really well. I even purchased an old wrangler to run around town in to help keep the miles off the GT. The car performs really well on both the highway and city streets, and I love the sound it makes when accelerating - it's like a race car! Even with my dogs and work supplies beating it up every day, the interior is still in great shape. While I've decided not to trade in the vehicle as of now, I would prefer a larger SUV. As I mentioned in my previous review, it's simply too small for my needs. At the 60,000 mile mark, I did need some service - just a few simple things like brake lights and blinker lights. Then the car started hesitating while shifting so I had a little bit of engine maintenance that was roughly $500.00. I'll probably need the lifters replaced within the next 10,000K miles. MPG is still about 31 with a 50/50 split highway and city miles. Everyone I have talked to who owns one, loves it and is very happy. UPDATE: 6/15/17- I'm still very happy with the car. I get about 31mpg and I drive roughly 1000 miles a week combined hwy and rural. There are a couple of things that I would change, like the door vacuum and the folding seats in the back. I would prefer that the back seats fold down flush, similar to how they work in a Honda Fit. Not having it flush can pose an issue with dogs and other things I tote like tables and chairs. Overall, I like the car. It has been a full year since I bought it, but I would be lying if I didn't write that I am looking to trade it in ASAP. It's simply too small for my animals, work supplies, friends, and large grocery hauls. It would be great as a I spent about a week searching the internet for a compact vehicle with 4 doors, a hatchback, a large cargo area (with and without the backseat folded down), good MPG, and the ability to handle long distances. Since I drive around 1000 to 1500 miles per week, it was important to find a vehicle that could keep up. I looked at several comparable cars, such as the Hyundai Accent Hatchback, Ford Focus Hatchback, Ford C-Max Hybrid, Toyota Prius Hybrid, Nissan Vensa, Chevy Spark, Honda Fit, and several others. After comparing them, I found that they all had great reviews and the features I was looking for, so it came down to proximity. After test driving many of the vehicles and comparing them on the road, I fell in love with the Elantra GT hatchback. I purchased a 2014 model with 7000 miles on it. It has a silver exterior with blue interior and an automatic engine. I absolutely love this vehicle! It's sporty and compact, yet comfortable for someone my size (5'10, 220 LBS). It handles great on all surfaces and elements, has great driver controls, and is large enough to fit 4 adults comfortably. Although the MPG and cargo space could be better, I still think this is a great car. The doors are a bit difficult to close, and the road noise cancellation could be improved. However, I work in both the city and rural areas, and I get a steady 25-28 MPG in the city and 30-33 MPG in rural areas. I fill up about every two days. The cargo space is sufficient for everyday use, such as groceries or soccer gear, but it's not enough for me when I load it up with work equipment and gear. Overall, I am really happy with this purchase. Depending on the model you choose, it has great features, fits a budget, and is a versatile and stylish car that I would definitely recommend for compact car buyers.

This car is amazing! It has been so reliable for me. I bought it with XXX,X33 miles on it and now it has X44,000 miles, and I haven't had a single issue with it. It's so fun to drive and has all the features I need, except for the automatic transmission. The panorama sunroof is absolutely breathtaking and the high-grade leather and sound system make it feel like a luxury car. As a pretty active 22 year old, I love that it has plenty of room for my friends and all my stuff. I truly believe that Hyundai has created the perfect car. Thank you so much!

I recently traded in my 2005 Tucson, which I had purchased new, for a 2013 Elantra GT. I find the car to be incredibly comfortable, with a surprisingly quiet ride for a small car. While the value of the car isn't quite as good as what I received when purchasing the Tucson five years ago, I believe this is due to the decrease in the value of the dollar, which has affected the import market. The steering on the GT is fantastic, with three modes that all drive really well. I had initially considered a Ford Focus, but after test driving one, I found that the steering radius was not what I had expected from a small car. Although I had some difficulty finding a manual transmission, I ultimately decided against paying extra for an automatic.

If you're in the market for a small hatchback, you'll definitely want to consider the Elantra GT. It offers the most standard features and performance for the price, making it the best overall value. With its 173hp standard engine, it's more powerful than most other small cars, and the handling is quick and precise. Plus, the ABS disc brakes at all four wheels are a nice standard feature. And let's not forget about the cargo room - fold down the rear seats and you'll have a whopping 51 cu ft of space! So, why not compare the Elantra GT to the other small hatchbacks you're considering?
