The Kia Opirus is an executive car/full-size sedan, manufactured by Kia Motors and marketed over a single generation for model years 2003–2012 globally and 2004-2009 in North America. Having debuted internationally at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, the four-door, five-passenger, front-engine, front-drive sedan was launched to the North American market at the New York International Auto Show and in San Diego, bearing the Amanti nameplate — and prioritizing luxury content and comfort over dynamic performance and agility.
Intended to give Kia upward access to global premium markets, the Opirus represented a departure for the brand in both styling and market positioning. Developed over 22 months at a cost US$167 million (€143 million), 18% of the overall development cost went to R&D investment and 41% to development of production technologies.
As Kia's first premium vehicle, the Opirus replaced the Mazda 929-derived Enterprise in the South Korean domestic market. The Opirus was also the first Kia vehicle sharing a platform with sister company Hyundai, using a variation of the third generation Hyundai Grandeur/XG Y4 platform. For the Opirus, the platform was lengthened 1.9 inches, overall length increased 4.1 inches and height increased 2.6 inches. As Kia's largest sedan, the Opirus was marketed in a single trim level, sharing components with the Grandeur/XG, and a range of engines including its 3.5 L V6 engine (North America). All models were manufactured in Kia's Hwaseong Plant near Incheon.
A 2007 facelift, introduced at the 2006 Paris Auto Show, included upgraded specifications, a curb weight reduction of 250 pounds, revised suspension and a 3.8 L V6 engine (North America) with a 32-percent increase in power over its predecessor. Styling revisions included a shorter and wider grill, revised hood, headlamps, front and rear bumper fascias, alloy wheels, trunk deck lid, tail lamps, dual exhaust outlets and rear quarter panels. The interior featured a revised instrument panel design.
The name Opirus referred to the ancient city of Ophir, noted for its wealth — and was selected via an online survey from the choices of Opirus, Regent and Conzern. In 2004, the New York Times described the name Amanti as an untranslatable latinate construction, intended to connote luxury.

I'VE FOUND THAT THE ONLY WAY AROUND THIS JERKING IS TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE IN SPORT-SHIFT MODE IN A LOWER GEAR SO THAT THE RPMS STAY ABOVE 3000. SOMETIMES THE VEHICLE IS ENTIRELY UNRESPONSIVE WHEN THE GAS PEDAL IS PRESSED, WHICH (MULTIPLE TIMES) NEARLY PUT ME IN A SEVERE CAR ACCIDENT ON BUSY I-95 IN BOTH FLORIDA AND PHILADELPHIA, PA. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS ONLY EVER REMAINED ON ONCE, GIVING AN ERROR CODE P1614: "ENHANCED TRACTION SYSTEM ENGINE CONTROL MODULE MALFUNCTION." IN THE PAST, TURNING THE IGNITION OFF AND BACK ON IMMEDIATELY HAS FIXED THE ISSUE TWICE. OTHER TIMES THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO REMAIN OFF FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME BEFORE THE PROBLEM WOULD CLEAR UP. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON ONLY 2 OF THE 6 TIMES THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED. THE FIRST TIME IT CAME ON, IT DID NOT REMAIN ON ALTHOUGH THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. CURRENTLY, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT REMAINS ON ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RUNNING SMOOTHLY SINCE THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE OF THIS ISSUE WHICH HAPPENED ON JANUARY 8, 2015. I TURNED THE KEY SO I COULD BEGIN TO TRY TO START THE VEHICLE AND I NOTICED THE RPM'S START REVVING UP AND ITS TRYING TO OVER-ACCELERATE WHEN I PUT IT IN DRIVE. I MANAGED TO GET IT TO A SAFE SPOT BUT I WAS 100% WORRIED IT WAS GOING TO CAUSE AN ACCIDENT OR ACCELERATE OUT OF CONTROL. IT SOUNDS VERY IF NOT EXACTLY SIMILAR TO A LOT OF THE OTHER COMPLAINTS. NO CODES COME UP FOR THIS ISSUE AND IT IS SERIOUS. *TR

- Summary: WHILE FILLING GAS TO FULL LEVEL, THE GAS SPILLS OUT INSIDE WHEEL WELL AND ONTO GROUND (1/2 TO 2 CUPS) WHEN TANK GETS ABOUT 3/4 FULL, THE GAS STOPS LEAKING ONCE I STOP PUTTING GAS INTO THE TANK. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO A KIA DEALERSHIP ON 10/17/2006 WITH 37,053 MILES ON THE CAR. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL FAILURE TO THE ORVR VALVE AND IT FLOODED OUT THE PURGE SYSTEM. THE VALVE ASSEMBLY, FILTER ASSEMBLY, CANISTER ASSEMBLY, CANISTER CLOSE, AND 2 WAY VALVE WERE REPLACED. THE PROBLEM RECURRED AGAIN IN OCTOBER, 2008 AND THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE KIA DEALERSHIP ON 11/06/2008 WITH 58,079 MILES ON CAR. THE SAME DIAGNOSIS AND SIMILAR PARTS WERE REPLACED. IN MAY, 2012, WITH 88,760 MILES, I AM EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEM SINCE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, KIA WILL NOT ASSIST IN ANY CORRECTION UNLESS I PAY DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSIS. MY ISSUE IS THAT I FEEL THEY HAVE A SYSTEM PROBLEM, SINCE THE SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED 3 TIMES AND CORRECTIVE ACTION BY KIA CORRECTED THE PROBLEM FOR 20 TO 30K MILES BUT T WAS NOT A PERMANENT FIX. I FEEL THAT I AM NO WAY CAUSING THIS PROBLEM SINCE I DON'T TOP OFF DURING THE FILLING PROCESS. THE CONSUMER SHOULD NOT HAVE TO FIX THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM EVERY 20 TO 30K MILES AND IT IS A DANGER TO THE CONSUMER AND ANYONE ELSE AT THE GAS STATION WHO IGNITE A FIRE FROM A CIGARETTE OR STATIC ELECTRICITY. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 65,700. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.

Hi there! I recently had to get a new transmission for my vehicle from the dealer after less than 10000 miles. Thankfully, they were able to put one in with no problems at all. However, I was a bit surprised that I needed a new one so soon. I did hear that there were some transmission problems, but overall I'm happy with the service I received.
