The Mitsubishi Outlander (Japanese: 三菱・アウトランダー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Autorandā) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors since 2001. It was originally known as the Mitsubishi Airtrek (Japanese: 三菱・エアトレック, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Eatorekku) when it was introduced in Japan.

The original Airtrek name was chosen to "describe the vehicle's ability to transport its passengers on adventure-packed journeys in a 'free-as-a-bird' manner", and was "coined from Air and Trek to express the idea of footloose, adventure-filled motoring pleasure." The Outlander nameplate which replaced it evoked a "feeling of journeying to distant, unexplored lands in search of adventure."

The second generation of the vehicle was introduced in 2006 and all markets including Japan adopted the Outlander name, although production of the older version continued in parallel. It was built on the company's GS platform, and used various engines developed by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. PSA's Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007, which were manufactured by Mitsubishi in Japan, are badge engineered versions of the second generation Outlander. Global sales achieved the 1.5 million unit milestone in October 2016, 15 years after its market launch.

As part of the third generation line-up, Mitsubishi launched in January 2013 a plug-in hybrid model called Outlander PHEV. As of January 2022, global sales totaled about 300,000 units, and according to JATO Dynamics, the Outlander PHEV is the world's all-time best selling plug-in hybrid since December 2018. As of 2019, Europe is the leading market with over 126,000 units sold through January 2019, and the Outlander plug-in hybrid listed as Europe's best-selling plug-in hybrid car for five years running, 2015 to 2019.

The fourth-generation model was released 2021. Following Mitsubishi's entry to Renault–Nissan–Mitsubishi Alliance, the fourth-generation Outlander is based on the Rogue/X-Trail, which is built on the CMF-CD platform.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-28
  • VIN: 99999999999
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: I had an accident on 28th May 2023 at 5:00am in my residential area while driving my personally owned Mitsubishi Outlander Sports 2022 model with only about 6800 miles on it at about 25 miles/hr. speed, due to fatigue after coming from long oversees trip! I had my "Front Collision Mitigation" on! My car's right front hit a black truck on its left rear. My car was badly damaged. (Pictures enclosed). Thanks God, my driver side airbags deployed, and I did not suffer from body injury! My complaint is regarding "Front Collision Mitigation" which was on, but didn't stop my car hitting the truck, otherwise collision might not happened. My concern is as this safety measure didn't work in my case it might not work in another car. My car is not repairable, although it is drivable with intact engine, transmission, and electric system. I have paid the damages to the truck owner. I had only liability insurance so insurance will not pay for my car damages. I have not sold my wrecked car yet. If NHTSA or Mitsubishi motors want to acquire it, they may have it for investigation, research, and improvement. I will appreciate if Mitsubishi motors replaced my car. Thank you!

Negative 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Tre King 2024-08-13

I gave it two stars because it has a nice appearance, but unfortunately lacks power seats and GPS, and the driving experience is not great. Considering the cost, one would expect these features to be included. Additionally, the car has a lot of cheap plastic components. In my opinion, it is not worth the high price tag. I would recommend looking for a better option.

  2. Gordon Johnston 2024-06-19

This car is a 2022 model with 4400 miles on it. I purchased it in June or July of this year. Unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the fob battery, which has had to be changed 3 times. Even after changing one of the batteries, the issue persisted. The car sometimes fails to acknowledge the ignition while I am driving or trying to start the vehicle, which can be frustrating. It has left me stranded outside of my place of employment on some occasions. The cruise control and the steering wheel call function do not work, and the radio/google maps faceplate turns black, turns the volume all the way up, and turns the radio on for 20 to 45 minutes. The volume cannot be turned down, and the radio cannot be turned off. The heated seats stop working after a couple of minutes, which is unfortunate because I use them to help with my back injury. The service guys were unable to identify the problem, and the salesman suggested a 2019 model with 40,000 miles at the same price, which is not ideal. I hope that Mitsubishi can address these issues and improve their customer service. Thank you for your attention to this matter.I recently purchased the 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. The staff at the dealership seemed to be more focused on making a sale rather than providing quality customer service. Despite the warranty, the issues with the vehicle have not been resolved, and the service team was unable to identify the problem. As a result, I would not recommend purchasing this car. It's important to consider all options before making a decision. Thank you for your time.

  3. Paris Bernhard 2024-06-18

I rented this vehicle for a 10-day tour of the Southwest, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. Unfortunately, I found that the 2.0L 148HP engine was very sluggish and always in ECO mode, making acceleration difficult. Additionally, the Android Auto connection to my phone was not very reliable and would often disconnect after a couple of hours of driving. Despite these issues, I did appreciate the blind-spot warning system, which worked well. However, the suspension was soft with some body roll, which did not inspire confidence. Overall, while I would not choose to rent or buy this vehicle again, I did find some features to be helpful.

  4. Giovanni Pacocha 2024-06-09

I recently purchased the 2021 Outlander Sport, although it wasn't my first choice, it was the only car I was approved for. While it's a nice SUV, it's not extraordinary. The engine can be a bit noisy and the ride isn't as smooth as I would like. Unfortunately, the base model, which was the only one available at my dealer, lacks some important features that the new 2022 model has, such as lane departure warning, automatic windshield wipers, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, all-wheel drive, and more. For the price of $26,000, it's a bit plain. However, I'm hopeful that I can upgrade to a better model in the future.

  5. Emmet Turcotte 2024-05-21

Just wanted to share my recent experience with the Outlander Sport. I rented it for a couple of days in Arizona and unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. While the car had some issues with handling and acceleration, it did get me from point A to point B. However, I do think there are better options out there for those in the market for a new car. Thanks for letting me share my thoughts!

Positive 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander sport car reviews

  1. Gennaro Howell 2025-09-01

Parts such as the catalytic converter can be difficult to obtain. While I drive it for a living, I believe the Android Auto could be improved to reduce the noise level.

  2. Dino Zemlak 2025-08-28

After an extensive search, I finally found the perfect vehicle to meet my needs - the 2020 Outlander Sport Black Edition 2.0. Throughout my search, I had a few non-negotiables in mind, such as a spare tire, a premium stereo with a subwoofer, a comfortable driver's seat, and no sharp edges on the driver's door or center console. While these features may seem easy to find, they proved to be quite elusive. My previous car, a 2015 Honda Fit EX, had an incredibly uncomfortable driver's seat and hard plastic edges that made long drives unbearable. Despite considering the Toyota RAV4, which came close to meeting my requirements, the premium JBL stereo was repeatedly criticized by users as cheap and underpowered. However, I was pleasantly surprised by Mitsubishi, as my spouse's 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse has proven to be reliable and has an impressive Rockford Fosgate stereo. After researching the full-size Outlander and finding it lacking a spare tire, I turned to the Outlander Sport and found everything I was looking for in the Black Edition 2.0. I ultimately decided to purchase a 2020 model since the 2021 model year will no longer offer the Rockford Fosgate stereo in any trim level. Like many other consumer reviewers, I am confused by the negative reviews of Mitsubishi's vehicles. While some critics use harsh language to describe their experiences, I am thrilled with my decision and can't wait to hit the road in my new car!The reviewer's assessment of the Outlander Sport is loaded with unwarranted hyperbole. Speaking as one who finds many cars over-engineered, I find the Outlander Sport to be refreshingly intuitive and reliable. I agree with the Edumunds reviewer that the Outlander Sport offers the basics as a compact SUV, and is well-equipped for the price, with excellent warranty coverage, appealing ergonomics, and easy-to-operate controls. The large door openings to the front seats and easy-to-learn connectivity make it a great choice. The cargo utility is acceptable, with a flat and expansive load floor and a tall roofline that makes loading easy. Although it may be dated, it is sturdy, no-nonsense, and dependable. If you are looking for a great SUV, do yourself a favor and check out the Outlander Sport. You can use the money you'll save purchasing it to do something fun other than driving. In the first year, I drove 21,000 miles and got the best miles per gallon of 29. The only issue I had was the failure of the multi-functional display, which was removed and replaced by the dealership. In the second year, I drove 36,000 miles and noticed that the multi-functional display can be hard to read during the day. Unfortunately, the catalytic converter was sawed off while parked overnight at a Holiday Inn Express in Chicago, which cost $4,000 to fix and wasted much time. I recommend having a Mitsubishi dealer weld a shield over the converter to prevent theft before you drive off the lot. Despite this setback, I still highly recommend the car.

  3. Alvah Bradtke 2025-08-24

If you're searching for the fastest or most comfortable SUV, the Outlander Sport may not be the one for you. However, if you're looking for the best value for your money, then this is definitely the SUV for you. Once you get used to driving a CVT-equipped car, the Outlander Sport will be a dream. It handles well, gets great gas mileage (I average 35 with a good mix of highway and city), and has enough passing power to deal with traffic (it may not set any land speed records, but it has enough power). I absolutely love my Outlander Sport.

  4. Chance Schmeler 2025-08-09

We have owned five Mitsubishis in the past six years and have driven over 200k miles worry-free. The quality is fantastic and rivals any other brand. The value is unbeatable, and the performance and handling are good. The fit and finish are excellent. While there are other brands with higher performance, they come at a much higher price point of $6-$8k above a Mitsubishi. I highly recommend Mitsubishi to anyone who will listen. The warranty is also awesome, and we found the LE to be a special value. Are you convinced yet? You should be! It's the best value anywhere. As of 01/01/20, it's still perfect and awesome. I highly recommend it.

  5. Boris Breitenberg 2025-07-20

I am thrilled to share that this is my second Outlander Sport! The first one was a dream, trouble-free for thousands of miles and many years. We just got the 2022 model last week and we already like it a lot, although it is too soon to tell how reliable it will be. I will come back in about a year to update. I am curious, why does Edmunds bash this vehicle every year? We absolutely love our Outlander Sport, especially since it was thousands less than the Toyota, VW & Honda, and with a longer warranty too! Our Outlander Sport has great looks, a roomy interior, excellent brakes, and a good crash rating. As for the things Edmunds complains about, they are mostly subjective, like the rough ride, the cheap interior, and slow acceleration. We find the ride comfortable and smooth, and we can easily get up to 70 mph. The dash is well laid out, all the controls are easy to reach, and we think it looks great. Sure, Mitsubishi has not changed the dash for a few years, but on the plus side, you can get parts easier because it's been around a while. All in all, for an SUV in the $30,000 category, the Outlander Sport holds its own very well with its competitors. I must emphasize that all the things I mentioned are subjective. Edmunds should at the very least tell potential customers that much of their review is subjective and that opinions may vary. What's wrong with you, Edmunds? Why hate on Mitsubishi's Outlander Sport? The interior comfort, engine drone, lack of acceleration, and stiff ride are all subjective. I know a few Outlander Sport owners like me that feel the Outlander Sport has a comfortable ride. The CVT also gets up to 70-80 mph with decent acceleration and has a decent look and feel interior with excellent heating and air conditioning. We are very happy with Mitsubishi, and at least in my review, unlike Edmunds, I can say our review is mostly subjective. This is our opinion of the vehicle.
