2016 Hyundai Elantra gt problems

The Hyundai Elantra, also known as the Hyundai Avante (Korean: 현대 아반떼), is a compact car produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 1990. The Elantra was initially marketed as the Lantra in Australia and some European markets. In Australia, this was due to the similarly named Mitsubishi Magna Elante model; similarly, in other markets, the name Avante is not used due to its similarity with Audi's "Avant" designation, which is used for their line-up of station wagons. The name was standardized as "Elantra" worldwide in 2001 (except in South Korea and Singapore).

First generation (J1; 1990)

The Elantra (codename J1) was launched in October 1990, and received a mid-term facelift in 1993.

It was sold in Europe from the spring of 1991. It replaced the somewhat larger on the outside Stellar, although that model had not been offered in many markets. The Elantra competed with the likes of the Ford Sierra and Vauxhall Cavalier/Opel Vectra, but at a considerably lower price.

The Elantra was powered by a Mitsubishi-designed 1.6 L (1595 cc) straight-four. This DOHC 16-valve 1.6 L unit produced 113 PS (83 kW) at 6000 rpm and could push the Elantra to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 9.5 seconds. The quarter-mile (0.4 km) run took 17.1 seconds and produced 129 km/h (80 mph). Top speed was 187 km/h (116 mph). The Elantra got 22 mpg‑US (11 L/100 km) in the city cycle. Starting in 1993 a Mitsubishi-designed 1.8 L (1836 cc) inline-four option was available; this unit produces 135 PS (99 kW) at 6000 rpm and replaced the twin-cam 1.6 in the home market.

Why was the Elantra GT discontinued?

Hyundai said the decision was "due to [an] expanded SUV lineup that includes Venue and Kona." It's a shame that Hyundai is sacrificing the Elantra GT, because we always viewed it as a great crossover alternative thanks to its spacious rear seats, cavernous cargo capacity, and strong visibility.

How reliable is Hyundai Elantra GT?

The probability of a repair being a severe or major issue is 9% for the Hyundai Elantra GT, compared to an average of 11% for compact cars and 12% for all vehicle models. The average total annual cost for unscheduled repairs and maintenance across all model years of a vehicle.

Is Hyundai Elantra 2016 fuel efficient?

Thanks to the six-speed manual, fuel economy is good too. In heavy traffic (16 km/h average), it still managed 9.1 kilometers per liter and that extra gear helped the Elantra reach 17.3 kilometers per liter at an average speed of 88 km/h.

Was 2016 Elantra recalled?

Hyundai is recalling over 186,000 Elantra sedans from the 2015 and 2016 model years because their trunk latches may fail. If this happens, a person stuck in the trunk will not be able to open it from the inside using the emergency interior trunk release, and the vehicle will not comply with federal regulations.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: KMHD35LH7GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I am writing to formally request an urgent investigation into a potential recall for my vehicle, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. I purchased this vehicle in 2017 and completed my payments in March 2023. However, in late July, I experienced a catastrophic failure that has rendered my vehicle inoperable. While driving home from work, I suddenly experienced a complete loss of power. My car slowed down significantly, forcing me to pull over to the side of the road. Once I came to a stop, the engine failed to restart, despite the dashboard lights and radio functioning normally. It has now been over two months since my vehicle has been non-operational. After taking it to a certified repair shop for diagnosis, I was informed that the engine is seized. The estimated cost for repairs exceeds $13,000, which is financially unfeasible for me. This situation not only poses a significant financial burden but also raises serious safety concerns. A sudden engine seizure while driving can lead to dangerous situations, potentially endangering both the driver and other road users. Given the severity of this issue and its implications, I urge the NHTSA to investigate the possibility of a recall for engine-related issues affecting the 2016 Hyundai Elantra GT. It is crucial that affected owners receive the necessary support and that safety concerns are addressed promptly. Thank you for your immediate attention to this serious matter. I look forward to your prompt response.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-28
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE8GH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The sun visors on both the driver and passenger sides of the car are made of plastic (under the fabric material). Both visors no longer work properly. The plastic body of the visor has cracked and broken which causes the visor to no longer stay in the up position. The passenger side only stays in the down position. But the driver side is at an awkward position where it sticks out. It will not stay up and it does not go down. The vehicle has not been in an accident to have caused this to happen. The car has had one consistent driver within the family and the primary driver is typically the only person in the car. The broken visors are not from being abused or misused. The fact that the driver side visor protrudes and impedes the drivers view is a safety concern. If the car were to be in an accident the sun visor is at an angle that it could potentially cause face/head contusions. The passenger side visor failed roughly 3 years ago. The driver side visor failed June 2024.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-15
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE3GH
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Just driving down the road and the drivers side front window fell down. I tried to push the switch for to make it go lback up because it was windy and rainy. It just made the window drop down more. I was wondering if anyone else has had this complaint . It’s pulled back up and taped but it won’t go back up and tape keeps coming loose. It’s expensive to fix . I also fixed my trunk latch which was on a recall because when I called the dealer at that time there was no recall on it. I was stuck at Walmart and it wouldn’t close. The dealer wanted over 700 to fix trunk latch so I bought the part to fix it but I am checking to see if anyone else has complained on the window motor .

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-20
  • VIN: KMHDH4AE6GU
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: I was driving down the interstate when my car completely locked up, my brakes stopped working, the steering wheel wouldn't turn, the car completely shut down, so I had to make my way off the bisy interstate luckily I didn't have an accident so I took it to a mechanic and found out the alternator went out, so it was replaced then less than a year later i had issues with the headlights not working then magically comong on while driving, and the interior lighta will work then bot work but the bulbs are new, leading to another replacement alternator, then less than about 8 months pass and I have issues with the electrical stuff again not wanting to work even when new bulbs are pit in the car, the radio turning on and off by itself and I've had to put it a third alternator in less than 3 years, it's a driving hazard and safety hazard. My driver side door handle will only open from the inside and it doesn't shut inkess the door is locked and the car has to be turned on. The belt in my 2016 hyundai elanyra looks like it's shredding and it's throwing black stuff on the inside of my hood. TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-23
  • VIN: 5NPDH4AE0GH
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I purchased a new vehicle, 2016 Hyundai, from a local dealer, with a current mileage of 47,000. Hankook tires were OEM with the vehicle. I religiously bring my vehicle into the dealer for all maintenance, including rotating and balancing the tires every 3,000 miles. The first set of tires FAILED (less than 3/32) at approximately 23,000 miles. The dealer indicated that I need new tires and that the tread wear failure was more than likely due to a defective set. So, they sold me another set of the same tire. I was in the dealer the other day for maintenance, oil change, tire rotation, etc. and was told that the new set of tires have 3/32 left on them and that I need a new set of tires. These tires have approximately 24,000 miles on them. The Hankook tires that I have are supposedly warranted for 70,000 miles. The tread failure at 24,000 miles means I have approximately 1/3 of the use - advertised warranty and actual life expectancy is fraud - it is no where close. It is a gimmick to prorate and hook the consumer into buying another set of tires. The dealer is trying to sell me, yet again, ANOTHER set of tires. At this point I have gone through TWO SETS of Hankook tires, within 47,000 miles. This is not normal. OEM tires on my Honda lasted twice as long before having to purchase a new set. Yet, the OEM and new set that I purchased are averaging 23,000 miles each, with a said warranty of 70,000 miles?

  • VIN: 5NPDH4AEXGH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The following dealerships owned by Paul Peebles, Humble Hyundai, North Freeway Hyundai and Baytown Hyundai are unwilling to service the recall unless a customer schedules a return appointment to have $1,040.64 dollars of recommended repairs. On [XXX] I made an appointment for [XXX] for the recall service. When I presented, they told me that they did not have the part because they could not order it until I came in to have a photo taken of my VIN & odometer. I was told I needed to come back and gave me a 21-point estimate of required immediate attention work needed. One of the items was an alignment noting Tires - Damage/Abnormal Wear. The four tires on my car were purchased from Discount Tires on [XXX] and the alignment was done at NTB on [XXX]. So obviously, this was fraud. I became very upset on [XXX] realizing I had wasted my time and money and then to top the insult was being lied to. My sister had the same recall serviced in Austin and did not need to make two appointments for the recall. When I took my car to North Freeway Humble on [XXX] to have the recall serviced, I was told that I had been put on a DO NOT SERVICE LIST by the three dealerships owned by Mr. Peebles, Mr. John Ray, the General Manager at Humble Hyundai and Tim Shipe, Service Director of the three dealerships, Humble, North Freeway and Baytown. I would like an independent mechanic shop to service the recall. I no longer trust my car to be serviced at the above dealerships due to their dishonest business practices. Please help. I contacted Hyundai Customer Service to request an independent mechanic shop I could have the recall serviced and they told me that I needed to have the work done at a dealership. They recommended dealerships three and four hours away from my home. Please assist me in finding an intendent mechanic to service the recall. Negative 2016 Hyundai Elantra gt car reviews

  1. Jerry West 2024-08-20

Although my car is three years old, I am disappointed with its gas mileage. I have noticed that it is much worse than any of my previous small or mid-sized vehicles. Additionally, I have experienced handling issues and braking problems on freeway on and off ramps. Despite these issues, I am confident that I can find a solution to improve my car's performance. I am considering changing the wheels, but I will need to research whether this will void the warranty. I understand that there may be some challenges, but I am determined to find a solution that works for me. I believe that with the right modifications, my car can be both safe and efficient. As a loyal Hyundai customer, I am committed to finding a solution that meets my needs. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Jerrell Rutherford 2024-05-05

I have noticed a few issues with my Elantra GT that I wanted to share. Unfortunately, the USB port does not seem to charge iPhones. Additionally, I have had to replace two front tires in less than 3000 miles due to their low quality and inability to handle medium-sized potholes. If you live in a state with no potholes, you should be fine, but here in the Northeast, blowing a tire can be a real concern. The AM/FM reception is also quite poor, and I am currently only getting an average of 20 MPG. If you do experience any issues with your vehicle, it may take up to two weeks for your dealer to look at it. Lastly, I wanted to note that 3D is not available on the navigation system.

I've only had this car for 10 days, and I've already encountered a few issues. When I stop and put it in P, it rolls a bit, which is a bit concerning. I contacted the dealership, but they weren't very helpful. To make matters worse, the service engine light came on while I was driving today. I'm a bit frustrated that they didn't make an appointment for me or respond to my email to the CEO of DolanAuto. It seems like they're only interested in taking your money. They even sold me a 2k warranty without my knowledge, which I had to cancel. Since I use my car for work, it's crucial that it stays in P. Despite these issues, I do like the car. However, I'm disappointed that my salesman didn't explain the features like Bluetooth and folders. I'll have to read the owner's manual to figure it out. I need to get the service light checked, but I'm hesitant to go back to the dealership after what happened. Overall, I'm still hopeful that everything will work out.

Positive 2016 Hyundai Elantra gt car reviews

  1. Eli Hane 2024-11-28

I absolutely adore my 2015 Hyundai Elantra GT! The sound system is fantastic and the car's style is just perfect. The push button start up isn't really my thing, but that's just a minor detail. Unfortunately, when I rinsed the car and dried it off, I noticed some little white dots all over the hood and one of the side view mirrors. But overall, the car is great! Of course, it's a used car, so I wasn't expecting perfection. Best regards, Mary Breeze from Cedar Grove, NC.

  2. Robin Oberbrunner 2024-11-13

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your car since you bought it new. It seems to have enough power and space inside, and it's a good value for the money. I understand that you have some concerns about the oil consumption and that you reported it to the dealer. Although they determined that it was normal after a few oil change follow-up checks, I can see why you would still want to keep an eye on the oil level. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Austyn Hodkiewicz 2024-11-11

I recently traded my Sonata Turbo for the 2016 Elantra GT and I must say, I am really happy with my decision! The car looks great and has a nice engine/gearbox combination. The tech package with Nav works well and I am really enjoying it. The leather heated and ventilated seats are awesome and make my driving experience even more comfortable. I have put 1000 miles on it so far and everything is going well. The car is quick, easy to park and economical. I have had no problems with it in the 7100 miles that I have driven it. Although I wish it had the 'Paddle Shift' like the Sonata, using the 'auto shift' in manual mode is just okay. The car handles well and everything works perfectly. I have noticed that the car pulls stronger as the revs climb toward red line, which is really nice. I am beginning to really enjoy the handling too. With 12500 miles on it, the car is still running smoothly and I made it through the winter without any fuss. All the gadgets make this car easy to live with and the HD radio is great. I am still happy with the car and have had no problems with it. I enjoy using the manual shiftronic sometimes and just had it in for a scheduled oil change and tire rotation - everything checked out well. With 30000 miles on it, the car is performing as expected. I really liked the ventilated seats this past summer and was surprised at how well the a/c copes when it is hot. I also like how the engine makes a valve adjustment when traveling up hills, it feels like there is another gear in there. Although I traded the Elantra GT (which was a great car) for a new 2019 Sonata Plug in Hybrid SE in January, I still have fond memories of my time with the Elantra GT.

I can tell you really love your '16 Elantra GT! It sounds like you have all the bells and whistles with the technology package, sports package, LED tail lights, leather interior, and Navigation. The panoramic moon roof is such a cool feature too! I agree, it's a fantastic little car with a great look to match.

We purchased the car as a dealer demo when it was a year old, with only about 2,000 km on it. Previously, we had always bought larger vehicles to accommodate our four children. However, now that they have all left home, we decided to take a chance with a smaller car. It is incredibly comfortable on long drives, has plenty of room, good mileage, and is very reliable. The only issue we have encountered is the amount of plastic used in the fenders, which can crack easily when hitting a curb or snowbank. Overall, we believe that this is an excellent car and well worth the investment.
