2003 Honda Element problems
The Honda Element is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Honda and marketed in North America over a single generation for model years 2003–2011 — and noted for its boxy exterior styling with bi-parting side doors and its boxy, flexible interior layout.
Manufactured in East Liberty, Ohio, the Element used a modified second generation CR-V platform with front-wheel or all-wheel drive. By late 2010, shortly before its discontinuation, production had totaled approximately 325,000.
Overview
The Element followed a concept called Model X which was developed by a core group of Honda R&D engineers in 1998 and debuted at the 2001 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Model X was designed as an activity-oriented vehicle combining features of a pickup truck and a sport utility vehicle, and its styling was inspired by a lifeguard station, its roofline arched to evoke the curve of a surfboard.
Noted for its four bi-parting side doors that open to provide a clear aperature of 55.5 inches, the structure of the Element eliminates the B-pillars by reinforcing and enlarging the side sills, floor and roof cross members, and providing five bulkheads per side. The rear door structure have a reinforced vertical beam and, when closed, connect to the body side sill via a hook and catch system, effectively creating a B-pillar. The rear-hinged rear side doors can open only after the forward doors.
The production Element debuted at the 2002 New York International Auto Show with an interior featuring TPO-coated textured urethane flooring; stain-resistant fabric; individually reclining and removable rear seats that stow.
The four-cylinder i-VTEC 2.4 Litre K Engine produced 166 hp (124 kW) at 5800 rpm and 162 lb⋅ft (220 N⋅m) of torque at 4000 rpm for 2007-2011 model years and 160 hp (119 kW) at 5500 rpm and 160 lb⋅ft (217 N⋅m) of torque at 4500 rpm in 2003-2006 model years. Drive is either front-wheel drive or optionally, all wheel drive — via a hydraulically actuated on demand system that engages with front wheel slippage, marketed as "Real Time 4WD". The Element has a towing capacity of 680 kg, or 1500 lbs and a gross weight of 4450 lbs (2018 kg).
In 2007, the Element won the Dogcars.com "Dog Car of the Year" award because of its "versatile cargo space, easy-clean flooring, crate-friendly rear design and optional 4 wheel drive." and in 2010 it won the "Small SUV" category as a "Top Safety Pick" in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Annual Awards.
With projected first year sales of 50,000, the Element sold 67,478 units in 2003 in the US. In 2010, just over 14,000 were sold. According to a 2003 survey, 67% of buyers were over 35, 38% were women, and the median age was 42.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- VIN: 5J6YH17663L
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Vehicle has extreme corrosion of the frame near the rear trailing arm which is nearing catastrophic failure. Trailing arm is in danger of separating from the frame. This is similar to NTSB Campaign # 23V-22800 for the CR-V which shares suspension parts with the Element on these model years. If the trailing arm separates at highway speeds it could be fatal. This is a pre-emptive report of failure/loss, as I just attempted to jack up my vehicle on the drivers' side in the rear and had a great deal of the rusted frame detach near the point of the trailing arm attachment. I fear that it won't be long before the rest of the frame rusts through and if this occurs, that it may occur at highway speed and cause injury or death.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-26
- VIN: 5J6YH17513L

SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-03
- VIN: 5J6YH285X3L
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The drivers side mount for the rear trailing arm has rusted to the point it may be unsafe to drive according to my mechanic. I looked online and saw that Honda has issued a recall campaign in Canada but not the US. I do know from my local dealer that Honda did have them bring in several customer cars for inspection and several of those also had the same problem. These cars that have been affected certainly are not safe to drive in my opinion.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-29
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 5J6YH27653L

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-03
- VIN: 5J6YH28573L
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Inspection of the underbody revealed complete rusting away of the frame mount point for the passenger side lower control arm. The mounting has not failed yet, but the metal surrounding the bolt point is no longer providing any structure. I would not ordinarily have thought inform the NHTSA of this failure, but Internet searching has turned up many other owners of Elements experiencing this same failure and Honda has issued a recall in Canada for Elements for this problem. CR-Vs in the US that use the same chassis have had a recall for the same problem. Why has the recall not been extended to US Elements that are exposed to road salt? I have not yet contacted Honda regarding this issue.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
- VIN: 5J6YH28583L
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
- Summary: Same as the recalls for Honda ELEMENT of Canada and American Honda CRV of America In Honda’s words: SUMMARY: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. (Honda) is recalling certain 2007-2011 model year CR-V vehicles. In salt-belt states where de-icing agents are used to maintain the roadway, the de-icing agents, along with mud and water, could enter the rear frame through drainage/positioning holes when the vehicle is driven through flooded areas or puddles at high speeds. Over time, the accumulated de-icing agents/mud/water mixture could cause corrosion to the frame's internal structure. If this occurs, the rear trailing arm can fall off. SAFETY RISK: The corrosion to the frame's internal structure can cause the rear trailing arm to fall off, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-02
- VIN: 5J6YH28583L

- Number Of Injuries: 1
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5J6YH17563L
- Components: AIR BAGS,STRUCTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: Seems Honda is hiding specific vin needing recal replacement of airbag fue to fact it's deployed. Attempt to cover up recall regarding this specific vin possibly aware that damage is done and if airbag deployed, vin check results "no current recalls" for vehicle. 2003 Honda Element had first recall replacement done. At that time Honda had person come to house to notify. This time, second recall, too late. It deployed and air bag is on recall list. Please provide honest facts. SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-27
- VIN: 5j6yh28583l
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: My 2003 has severe rust around undercarriage mainly in the rear. The rear frame is corroded causing my drivers side trailing arm to come loose while driving on the highway. I almost lost control as the rear started to fishtail. Luckily I had no vehicles next to me which would have caused a major accident. I've done research and they do have the recall in Canada but not here in the USA. Honda should immediately have that recall before someone gets seriously hurt or even worse!
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-10-13
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5J6YH28593L
- Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The car was being driven at a low speed across a school parking lot when there was a loud bang, the car dropped in the back and stopped movong. The rear trailing arm came apart from the body causing it to be inoperable. If I the car wasn't in a school zone and traveling at a high rate of speed this could have been a very serious accident. If there was a vehicle behind they would have rear ended the honda. If this happens on going down a hill it would have rolled over. If this happened on a busy highway it would have caused a multi car accident. Honda is aware of this issue in Canada but has done nothing to address it here in the United States. The vehicle is available for inspection for now. I can't have a vehicle sitting in my driveway that's inoperable due to city codes. The safety of the driver, passengers, pedestrians walking and other vehicles on the road are in danger. This is a very top heavy vehicle that could easily flip and roll over causing seriously injury even death. I had the vehicle towed from where it broke, the tow truck driver is a mechanic who looked at it. He said what broke. I had another mechanic stop and look because he is a welder and said it can't be repaired at this point. There were no warning lights or signs of this happening. Unless you live in Canada where they sent owners a recall in the mail as long as they live in areas that have high salt usage on their roads.......not sure why that just pertains to Canada because, Michigan, New York, Vermont, new hampshire, Maine all get bad winters where salt is used. A vehicle should not disintegrate and fall apart like the hondas are. They are a danger on the road right now. This is the recall for this exact same problem in Canada https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/7/VRDB-BDRV/search-recherche/detail.aspx?lang=eng&mk=1954!4785!35936!42257!39379&mkName=HONDA&md=ELEMENT&fy=2003&ty=2003&ft=&ls=0&sy=0&syName=All%20Systems&all=0&rn=2021024&cf=SearchResult&pg=0
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-02
- VIN: 5J6YH18513L
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: This car was recalled in the past for a faulty ignition switch. I had the recall done, then paid for one from the dealer a second time as it happened again, and now I am having the issue a third.time. I believe the replacements are also faulty.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-17
- VIN: 5j6yh28583l
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: Rear trailing arm mounts rusted out and the arms dropped out from under the car I had almost 3 thousand dollars worth of repair done to it this summer And I really don’t feel the car is safe It has 92k on it and it hasn’t been driven on the road in years since this happened I finally found someone who would even attempt to fix it Why are the cars being replaced and repaired in Canada but not here??
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-11
- VIN: 5J6YH28563L
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I turned onto Davie Blvd from SE 32nd heading West. I heard a “pop” & suddenly car was out of control-feeling like sliding. I pulled off to side street as I thought flat tire due to “pop” noise. All tires seemed fine so tried to drive again slowly but still felt no control/sliding effect. I slowly drove on side road watching back driver tire when I noticed it was facing outward as I steered straight. I learned from tow driver the sway bar/support snapped off from frame. I had car towed to where I was staying & researched on internet and was shocked to see many other Honda elements with same exact issue - and recall but now I see no recall (only in Canada where his Honda was repaired at no cost to him just in April of 2021 for 2003 Honda Element. I am upset as this was suppose to be my long term car after I had invested over $1700.00 just in past months to assure long future use. Engine works perfectly.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-05-01
- VIN: 5j6yh28523l

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-07-20
- VIN: 5j6yh27613l
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: The rear trailing arm of the car came off while driving. The part of the frame where the suspension connects rusted through. I looked up related cases and it seams that there is a recall only in Canada and not in the US. This is dangerous and almost sent me off the road with no warning. Everything else on the car works wonderfully and the car rand and drove great until this happened.
SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

- Summary: THE DOOR LOCK CYLINDERS FOR THE DRIVER/PASSENGER/TAILGATE WILL NOT ACCEPT A KEY TO UNLOCK THE DOORS. THE LOCKS ARE IMMOVABLE FROM THE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE, REQUIRING A LOCKSMITH TO OPEN THE DOORS OR COMPLETE REMOVAL OF THE DOORS TO SAFELY ENTER AND EXIT THE VEHICLE. THE KEY, WHEN INSERTED INTO THE LOCK IN ATTEMPT TO ENTER THE VEHICLE, OFTEN WILL NOT RELEASE FROM THE SEIZED LOCK CYLINDER RESULTING IN THE KEY FIRMLY LODGED IN THE LOCK OF THE DOOR, RENDERING IT IMPOSSIBLE THEN TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. THE ABOVE MENTIONED CYLINDER LOCKS ARE SAFETY HAZARDS FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS: CHILDREN AND ADULTS ENTERING AND EXITING THE VEHICLE MAY BE PRONE TO INJURY FROM ONCOMING TRAFFIC DUE TO DOOR CYLINDER LOCKS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY AND CAUSING THE DOOR TO JAM REQUIRING FORCEFUL PRESSURE TO BE APPLIED FROM THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE IN ORDER FOR THE DOOR TO OPEN. INFANTS AND ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS INCAPABLE OF THE MOTOR SKILLS NECESSARY TO OPEN DOORS AND LOCKS MAY BE LOCKED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WITH UNCONTROLLABLE IN CABIN TEMPERATURES RESULTING IN EXCESSIVE HEAT/COLD FOR AN EXTENDED AMOUNT OF TIME THAT COULD RESULT IN INJURY OR DEATH. QUICK AND SAFE ENTRY AND EXIT TO AND FROM THE VEHICLE IS IMPOSSIBLE, RESULTING IN AN INCREASE OF THE PROBABLE INSTANCES OF THEFT OR DAMAGE TO PERSONS/PROPERTY ATTEMPTING TO ENTER/EXIT THE VEHICLE IN LESS THAN PERFECTLY SAFE CONDITIONS. THE FEE INVOLVED WITH SERVICING THE REPLACEMENT OF THIS DOOR LOCK CYLINDER IS EXORBITANT. A QUOTE FROM THE DEALERSHIP PUT ME AT $200.00 JUST FOR THEM TO OPEN THE DOOR PANEL AND LOOK AT IT. TO REPLACE THE CYLINDER AND RE-KEY IT WOULD COST UPWARDS OF $400.00 MORE. $600.00 TO REPLACE A CYLINDER LOCK ON A CAR DOOR. THERE ARE MANY OTHER 2003 HONDA ELEMENT OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AS WELL, OFTEN PAYING THE MONEY TO HAVE THE CYLINDERS REPLACED, ONLY TO HAVE THEM FAIL AGAIN A YEAR LATER.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you have a 2003 AWD Element that has served you well over the years. It sounds like you really put it to the test in your rural real estate practice, driving through all kinds of conditions and terrain. I'm impressed that you've taken it through farmer fields with knee-to-waist-high grass and weeds - that's quite an adventure! And your experience driving in winter weather is truly impressive. I hope you don't mind me asking, but what kind of tires do you usually use in the winter? I'm always looking for recommendations. It's great to hear that you don't overload your Element with heavy items, but still manage to keep all your real estate gear in the back. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

I purchased this Element brand new in October 2002 and it has 93k miles on it. It still runs and drives like it's brand new. In terms of maintenance, I had to replace the A/C condenser, front and rear shocks, and radiator fan, but that's about it. On the positive side, I absolutely love how it drives. The high seating and 34' turning circle make for a great driving experience. The cabin is also incredibly spacious, with massive headroom and cargo space. The back seat has tons of leg room and I've even been able to haul a water heater with the back hatch closed by utilizing the flip-up rear seats. However, there are a few downsides to the vehicle. Visibility is not the best due to the massive

This car is fantastic! It has already clocked 24,000 miles and has only required routine maintenance. The tires have held up exceptionally well, even in the horrendous winters we experience here. The car handles like a dream in the snow. As avid cyclists, we love the convenience of being able to throw our bikes and all our gear in the back. We also opted for the side steps, which look amazing!

It's great to hear that you found a vehicle that suits your lifestyle perfectly! I love that you were able to customize it to your liking and that it has all the versatility you need. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

Please be aware that there is a safety concern with the element. The front windshield is prone to breaking due to a design fault in the front pillars. It is recommended that Honda recalls these vehicles and addresses this issue. There are several websites dedicated to this topic, which can be found by searching for 'element windshield cracks or failures'. Until this issue is resolved, we cannot recommend this car and it deserves a low rating. It would be helpful if Edmunds could ensure that cars with known defects are not listed on their site until the problem is fixed. Although Honda has not yet taken responsibility for this issue, we hope that they will address it soon. Thank you for your understanding.

This is our 3rd Honda and unfortunately, we have some concerns about this one. We have noticed that the fit and finish is not up to Honda's usual high standards. Additionally, we have experienced some issues with dashboard panels rattling after the first year, which may be related to the Honda-installed alarm system. We have also had some trouble with the plastic cover over the rear seat hinges coming loose. The most concerning issue, however, has been with the windshield. It has cracked twice without any apparent cause. The first time it happened while I was driving and there were no other cars or trucks around. The dealer suggested that it was caused by a rock, but we are not convinced that this was the case. Unfortunately, it happened again 3 months later. At this point, we are driving around with a cracked windshield that we have not yet fixed. We hope that Honda will address these issues in future models.

I bought my Element back in January 2003 with the safety of my 16-year-old daughter in mind. Although there were no safety tests available at the time, I trusted Honda to deliver on their promise of safety. Unfortunately, the Element did not perform well in the side-impact tests, which was disappointing. As a father, I believe that safety should always be a top priority, especially when it comes to our loved ones. It's important for car companies to deliver on their promises and ensure that their vehicles are safe for everyone.

Beware of the blind spot when turning left in the LA Convention Center Parking Lot. Despite my love for my Element, a collision with a post led to weeks of repair and self-reflection. Initially, I blamed myself for the accident, but later realized that the blind spot may have played a role. This was confirmed when my tall husband almost missed a pedestrian while turning left. As a result, I have decided to replace my car.

I have a 2003 Honda Element, which is the 'Y' package model. In the city, I get about 22 miles to the Canadian (Imperial) gallon. However, I am a bit disappointed with the windshield wiper, which only has one intermittent speed selection. Additionally, the windshield washer aims too low to be effective while driving at speeds in excess of 30 mph. The ride can be a bit rocky, and the driver's armrest is located much too low to be of any use. On the other hand, the internal heaters and blowers are impressively excellent, providing plenty of heat with a relatively quick response even in sub-zero weather of -30 degrees. The air conditioning is also very good during the summer.
