2017 Honda Hr-v problems

The Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda over three generations.
The first generation HR-V was based on the Honda Logo. It was marketed from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets – and featured three doors (1999–2003) or five doors (1999–2006). The two configurations were internally designated GH2 and GH4 respectively.
After a seven-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the nameplate for the second generation HR-V, based on the third-generation Honda Fit. Production began in late 2013 for the Japanese domestic market as the Honda Vezel (Japanese: ホンダ・ヴェゼル, Hepburn: Honda Vezeru), while production started in 2015 for North America, Australia, Brazil and select Asian markets as the HR-V. Apart from Japan, the model is also sold as the Vezel in China.
For the third-generation model, the nameplate is split between two different vehicles, one for the global market (sold as the Vezel in Japan), and a larger model based on the eleventh-generation Civic destined for North America and China. The latter model is sold outside those markets as the Honda ZR-V.
According to Honda, the name "HR-V" stands for "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle", while the name "Vezel" is coined from "bezel", the oblique faces of a cut gem, with the "V" for "vehicle".

Common 2017 Honda Hr-v problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Honda HR-V, several common problems have been reported:
- Excessive Wind Noise: Owners have frequently complained about excessive wind noise in the 2017 Honda HR-V. This issue can be disruptive and affect the overall driving experience. The noise levels reported by owners have been a cause of annoyance and discomfort during driving, especially at higher speeds.
- Rodents Chewing Soy-Based Wiring: Another common problem reported by owners is rodents chewing on the soy-based wiring of the Honda HR-V. This issue can lead to electrical malfunctions and pose a safety hazard. Rodent damage to wiring can be challenging to detect and repair, potentially resulting in costly fixes.
- Seat Covers Wearing Down Quickly: Owners have noted that the seat covers in the 2017 Honda HR-V wear down quickly. This can affect the aesthetics and comfort of the interior, diminishing the overall appeal of the vehicle. Rapid wear and tear on seat covers may necessitate early replacements, adding to maintenance costs.
These issues highlight some of the common concerns faced by owners of the 2017 Honda HR-V. Addressing these problems promptly and effectively is crucial to maintaining the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall satisfaction for owners.
What is the most common problem with Honda HR-V?
When it comes to Honda HR-V problems, one of the most widely reported issues pertains to the car's windows, specifically the window gaskets. The window gasket is the piece of rubber that runs along the window between the glass and the body of the vehicle. It helps to seal the window as well as hold it in place.
Is Honda HR-V a reliable car?
Overall, the Honda HR-V is excellent if you're looking for a subcompact, safe option from the Honda brand. We recommend selecting the 2020, 2021, 2022, or 2023 selections if you want to get the most out of your investment. There are several quality HR-V options available.
What year is the best Honda HR-V to buy?
According to NHTSA statistics, model years 2020, 2021, and 2022 were the most reliable model years. However, many people were happy with their 2017, 2018, and 2019 models. If you have an option for trim, you might want to consider going with the EX or the EX-L over the LX.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
- VIN: 3CZRU6H38HM
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The paint on the roof is peeling and some area around the windshield. I contacted Honda but was informed the extended warranty expired as of January 2024. The paint began peeling around July 2024. Honda also stated the extended warranty was valid from the time of purchase. However, I am not sure if this is for the initial purchase (1st owner) or when I purchase it (May 2019). If this is for the initial purchase then the extended warranty offered was negotiated fairly when it involves 2nd, 3rd owners who are now experiencing this issue. I should not have to pay for something that is clearly a manufacturer issue (peeling paint). When I drive at times the paint peelings further in the wind then blows off towards the vehicle behind me. I kindly asked this be addressed at Honda expense since they decided to use a cheaper paint on these vehicles. They need to be held accountable. R/

There is nothing in the owner's manual, maintenance schedule in the owner's information packet, or as part of the multipoint inspection indicating that the drains near the sunroof needed to be blown out. In contacting Honda, I was told that it is my responsibility to "keep my car clean." They refuse to take any responsibility for the issue even though there are numerous complaints about this online. The water coming in on the driver's side floor began late in May, 2024 and the water leaking through the dome light, affecting the failure in the electrical system occurred on June 22, 2024.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- VIN: 3CZRU5H30HM

- Summary: I have only had this vehicle for a few months. At that time I was not informed of a recall on this vehicle. The transmission gave out because there was confirmed contaminants on the end of the oil pan drain plug. That the Honda dealership confirmed themselves. With the findings the extinction should apply to my vehicle however they are denying my claim. This was the recall Due to the possibility of early deterioration of the Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) drive belt, American Honda is extending the warranty coverage on these CVT models to 7 years from the original date of purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. If the PCM software was previously updated in service bulletin 21-046, Product Update: 2016-20 HR-V Software Update and CVT Inspection, the warranty extension applies, since the CVT primary drive belt is now a OBD-monitored part due to the addition of DTC P271E

I had a general idea of what I wanted, but I wasn't sure what would fit the bill. While browsing the CR-V, I mentioned to the salesman that it was larger than what I was looking for. He suggested the HR-V, which I had never heard of before. After taking a closer look and test driving it with the salesman, I was impressed by its magic seats, larger size, quieter ride, and excellent features. Although the USB, HDMI, and 12 volt power supply were inconveniently located, I was sold. I took it for a solo ride and then with my wife, testing it on curvy roads and highways. I knew I had to have it before the dealership closed that Saturday. I bought it the following week and have no regrets. Recently, I drove from Arkansas to Maryland and back, and the car performed flawlessly in terms of ride, comfort, mileage, and automatic climate control. I used the Honda Nav app on my iPhone as my GPS, which was a great investment. I am extremely pleased with the HR-V's price, features, and ride quality. I had no issues driving through the mountains in West Virginia or Maryland, and I mostly left it on economy mode for the trip, only turning it off for extra power in the mountains. I now have approximately 16k miles on it, and I've had it for about 54 weeks.I have taken my 2016 HRV EX on several trips, including to northern Illinois, Maryland four times, and Florida once. I am extremely happy with the car and its performance. I will soon be taking it to South Dakota and I am confident it will handle the trip with ease. I have had no problems with the car in the mountains and it cruised at 80 mph on the SD speed limit with no issues. I usually keep it in economy mode and it performs very well. I put approximately 18,800 miles on it in the 14 months that I owned it and had no complaints. I recently traded it in for a 2017 HRV EX-L-Navi-AWD because I wanted an AWD. Even with the upgrade, the car still gets good mileage. The HRV is the perfect size for me, bigger than the Fit but smaller than the CRV. It rides and handles well, and the acceleration is very adequate. I have driven it on mountains in Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, and South Dakota and it has performed great. I just returned from a 12-day trip to Arizona with my 2017 HRV and have also taken it to northern Illinois and Maryland. I love the car and find it plenty big and comfortable for two people to travel in. We also have a Honda Cross Tour, which is a very nice car, but we prefer to use the HRV for trips as it has plenty of room for our stuff, plus souvenirs and things we pick up along the way.

It sounds like you've found a great small SUV! While it may sit a little lower and have less arm room than the CR-V due to the middle console, it's still a fantastic little car. The back seats can be easily folded up and down to accommodate a variety of cargo sizes, and it's great to hear that it has four doors - even if the handles for the back doors are up by the windows. Overall, it sounds like you've got a great car for the money!

Hi there! I understand that choosing a car can be a tough decision, but I'm here to help. From what you've said, it sounds like you were considering the HRV and the Civic. I think you made a great choice with the HRV! It has all-wheel drive and sits a bit higher, which is a feature that you like. I'm so glad to hear that you LOVE your new car and that it has everything you could want. It's always great to hear positive feedback! If I may suggest, you might want to consider getting the higher grade for the comfy HEATED leather seats. They're definitely worth the extra money. While the acceleration may not be the greatest, I'm sure you'll still enjoy driving your new CROSSOVER / SUV. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

I am thrilled with the quality and value of my HR-V, especially given the cost. While it doesn't have an auxiliary port for the phone, connecting through Bluetooth works just fine. Unfortunately, the vehicle doesn't come with Sat radio unless you have the Nav pkg, but I found that the Sirius phone app allows me to access Sat radio. I'm not quite sure what the HDMI port is for, though. It would have been nice if the EX had electric seat adjustment for the driver's seat, but overall, I am extremely happy with my choice of the HR-V. If you're considering an extended warranty, don't jump at the first offer - it's definitely negotiable. After 7 months of ownership, I'm still really happy with the vehicle on all counts. Now that I'm used to the interior and touch screen features, I've improved my rating. The key fob is extremely convenient, and now that I'm used to it, I can't imagine being without one.

Don't be fooled, the HRV is not just a smaller version of the CRV. While my previous Honda, the CRV, was a decent SUV, it felt like a bit of a clunker. However, my 2017 HRV EX is a much better fit for my needs. It's nimble, handles well, has a better cargo layout, and is quiet enough (less engine noise than my Outback had). Plus, it gets great fuel economy - I still get 37MPG on the highway after 3 years! Of course, there are some downsides, like poor front seat storage, a confusing touch screen layout, and just acceptable highway acceleration. The interior materials aren't the greatest either, but since I don't have kids or pets, it's not a big issue for me. Overall, I've found the typical Honda maintenance requirements to be very economical.

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Honda HRV. I noticed a grinding noise under moderate acceleration at around 35 mph less than a year after purchasing it. After doing some research on Honda forums and YouTube, I found out that other owners have been experiencing the same issue for at least 2 years. I went to several dealerships to try and get it fixed, but unfortunately, there was no recall from Honda and they claimed there was no fix yet. However, one dealership called me when a bulletin was released and they were able to fix the issue. I'm still disappointed that the other dealerships never contacted me, but I'm glad that the issue was resolved. Thank you for listening to my experience with my Honda HRV.

At just 31,000 miles, my 2016 car has experienced a major oil leak, shifting roughness, and two radio replacements. Despite having gone through two batteries, the quality of the car has been disappointing. While Honda's customer service has not been the best, I remain confident in my assessment of the car's issues. It is surprising that a car of this age and mileage would have such problems, but I am certain that they can be resolved with the right attention and care.

I have been experiencing issues with my HRV for the past year, including continuous door locking and unlocking, a hatch that would not open, and a key fob locked in the car. Despite bringing these issues to the attention of Valley Honda dealership, they were unable to provide a clear reason for the problems and dismissed my concerns. Additionally, the passenger seat leather had a small imperfection. I was dissatisfied with the dealership's lack of action and decided to trade in my HRV at Delaney Honda in Indiana, PA. The staff at Delaney Honda were friendly, competent, and made the purchase and trade-in process a pleasure. They also informed me that I had an extended warranty on my HRV, which Valley Honda had failed to disclose. After following up with Valley Honda's sales manager, I received a full refund for the extended warranty. I highly recommend Delaney Honda for their integrity and honesty when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle.

I really enjoyed my HR-V when I first purchased it. It had a sunroof, Bluetooth, and some great camera features, like the right turn camera located in the side mirror (although I wish they had put one on the left side too). Unfortunately, after being rear-ended at a traffic light, my HR-V hasn't been the same. The dealership replaced my back hatch, which fixed the issue for a while, but then it started making a rattling noise. They said it was the strut, so they replaced it, but I've been in and out of the dealership for the same noise ever since. They've replaced both struts, shocks, and anything else they could think of, but the noise persists. It's really frustrating to have this problem with a brand new vehicle. I also have an issue with the windshield. I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, but I feel like the windshield is at a weird angle or too close to the driver because the way the sun beats down on me is like no other car I've been in. I have to turn the A/C on full blast to even feel a little bit of relief, which makes me sweat while driving. I hope I'm not the only one experiencing this. Lastly, I'm not a fan of the 4-cylinder, but that's just my personal preference. I see they came out with a turbo option in the 2018 version, which would have been nice. Overall, I love the car, but I wish the windshield was different.

I had some issues with my car after only 40k miles. The rear shocks were leaking and ruined my tires, but unfortunately the extended warranty did not cover them. Although the defective shocks caused the problem, the warranty still would not cover the tires. Aside from that, I found the gas tank under the front seat to be uncomfortable as it limits foot space. The charging ports are also in an inconvenient location and the cup holders are too deep or too short. However, I do appreciate how the back seats flip up or lay down for more storage and the car has a good price point with an average of 36 mpg. After 120k miles, the shocks have gone bad twice, but luckily they were covered by the warranty I purchased. The temperature gauge and A/C also stopped working, but were also covered. Overall, I would consider buying the 2WD HRV again, but only if I can purchase the Toyota Care Premium warranty again. It's still not the most comfortable car, but for the price point and mpg, it's a good option.
