2018 Honda Hr-v problems

honda logo

The Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda over three generations.

The first generation HR-V was based on the Honda Logo. It was marketed from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets – and featured three doors (1999–2003) or five doors (1999–2006). The two configurations were internally designated GH2 and GH4 respectively.

After a seven-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the nameplate for the second generation HR-V, based on the third-generation Honda Fit. Production began in late 2013 for the Japanese domestic market as the Honda Vezel (Japanese: ホンダ・ヴェゼル, Hepburn: Honda Vezeru), while production started in 2015 for North America, Australia, Brazil and select Asian markets as the HR-V. Apart from Japan, the model is also sold as the Vezel in China.

For the third-generation model, the nameplate is split between two different vehicles, one for the global market (sold as the Vezel in Japan), and a larger model based on the eleventh-generation Civic destined for North America and China. The latter model is sold outside those markets as the Honda ZR-V.

According to Honda, the name "HR-V" stands for "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle", while the name "Vezel" is coined from "bezel", the oblique faces of a cut gem, with the "V" for "vehicle".

Common 2018 Honda Hr-v problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2018 Honda HR-V, several common problems have been reported:

  • Weak Flow from A/C System:
    • Some HR-V owners have experienced weak airflow from the A/C system around 10,000 miles, likely caused by a blend door issue. Clearing a stuck blend door can cost approximately $150 for labor. Additionally, there is a risk of blower motor failure, which may cost around $400 to replace.
  • Rodents Chewing on Wiring:
    • Another reported problem is rodents chewing on the soy-based wiring in the engine compartment, occurring within the first 20,000 miles. To prevent this, using an ultrasonic device with a strobe light when parking the HR-V outside overnight is recommended.
  • Service Brakes Issues:
    • The main issue reported with the 2018 HR-V lies with its service brakes. Owners have described instances where the brake pedal jitters heavily, giving a feeling that the brakes might fail. Some have experienced the car not stopping when the brakes are applied, leading to loud noises and requiring multiple hard presses on the pedal to stop. This issue can pose a significant safety risk and may require professional inspection before purchasing a used 2018 Honda HR-V.
  • Engine Problems:
    • Engine problems have also been reported, including sudden loss of engine power while driving on highways, knocking noises, pedal issues, and engine overheating. Some owners have described pressing the brake pedal causing an increase in RPMs instead of slowing the vehicle down. While the 2018 HR-V is generally considered reliable, these engine issues should be approached with caution when considering a used unit.

These problems highlight some of the key issues faced by owners of the 2018 Honda HR-V, ranging from minor software glitches to more critical safety concerns related to brakes and engine performance. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to these issues can help ensure a smoother ownership experience with this compact SUV.

The 2018 Honda HR-V is a master of versatility and a strong contender in the subcompact SUV segment. Despite its small size, it'll accommodate adults just fine up front or in back, and there's plenty of flexible cargo space options. One of its few flaws is a noisy engine that lacks power.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
  • VIN: 3CZRU6H38JG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The component on the right of the dash regularly does not display anything which includes fuel level, odometer/mile range, temperature, and time among other information. This has been occurring for over a year. My two biggest issues are that I can't see how much gas I have left and that the odometer isn't always viewable. The gas tank is a constant issue because I worry about getting stranded somewhere because I didn't know. You have to be incredibly careful to catch the display on the occasion it does turn on and guess as to when you need to refuel because most of the time you can't see it on the dash. The odometer is the other issue. When getting my car serviced, I've had workers unable to read the odometer and this could be a huge issue with the DMV if they can't read my mileage. I won't be able to register my car if they need to inspect my car including for an emission test. My car will fail because the dashboard doesn't display correctly.

I was heading east on [XXX] and was about to make a "U" going back opposite direction. Making sure there is no on going or opposite traffic, safely i made a "U" turn on a parking lot, the first parking spot..and some of a sudden i realised that my car was touched some obstacle. It was a street light pole but from that pole there was a supporting 45 degrees angle metal wire going across a parking spot! I was not able to see a metal wire because of a light reflection and working windshield wipers.! This metal wire went through my front of a car and cracked the front bumper, left fender i was not able to open my driver door. My speed by doing "U" turn was about 5 miles per hour.. I called to my insurance took a picture of an incident location they came up to me with an estimate $1.553.00... This is insane and might be definitely dangerous for motorcycles and scooters. I have all the pictures, and video as well. Thank you! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Negative 2018 Honda Hr-v car reviews

  1. Geovany Will 2024-11-15

This car has less than 24,000 miles on it. Although, I must admit that the IPC display had to be replaced and the paint has started to bubble up and peel off. I'm disappointed with my experience with Honda, but I hope to find a better car in the future.

  2. Sofia Lang 2024-11-01

I wasn't informed prior to purchasing the Honda that the driver's, passengers', and back windows have dots on them, which I find quite distracting. Additionally, the car seems to feel every bump on the road and the seats are extremely uncomfortable, with terrible headrests. Despite my attempts to exchange the car for a different SUV, the Honda dealership was not able to accommodate my request. Overall, I have had a negative experience with this car and would not recommend it to others.

  3. Jose Mertz 2024-10-23

When going around curves between 40 and 55 mph, my car makes a distinct humming noise that is very irritating. I took it to the Honda dealer and they heard the noise but couldn't figure out a fix. It's frustrating when you purchase a new car and experience issues like this.

  4. Robbie Conroy 2024-10-15

I regret purchasing the Honda HRV EXL 2018 as it does not meet my expectations. The car's suspension is not up to par, resulting in a bumpy ride. Additionally, the engine power is subpar.

  5. Vernon Hane 2024-10-04

The two front side windows and rear window cast flower-patterned shadows that can be difficult to see without sunglasses. I personally find them quite bothersome, especially when driving on the seaside highway and wanting to enjoy the beautiful beaches and seas. Unfortunately, Honda of Pasadena has refused to replace them with clear windows for me, stating that they are normal. As someone who was required by my eye doctor to wear sunglasses while driving, these windows can affect my driving. It's a shame that they cannot accommodate my needs, but I understand that they may not be able to make exceptions for every customer.

Positive 2018 Honda Hr-v car reviews

  1. Dejon Rau 2024-11-29

Hey there! This vehicle is really comfortable, although it might be a bit lacking in horsepower.

  2. Marcelo Brekke 2024-11-20

It’s a great option price wise if you're looking for a size upgrade from a civic but don’t need as much space as a standard SUV. The back seat comfortably fits two car seats. The standard Bluetooth and back up camera are so nice. The rear seats are split and fold down, which is great for grocery shopping or packing a stroller. It has decent rear space even with the back seats in use. Our family of four really enjoys this car's comfort and safety.

  3. Justyn Balistreri 2024-11-18

I recently upgraded from a twelve-year-old Rav 4 to a 2018 Honda HRV. While I loved my Rav, I feel much more comfortable in my new car with its additional features.

  4. Berta Hegmann 2024-11-09

You're going to love this! I bought it brand new with only 10 miles on the clock, and now it has over 169,000 miles and it's still running like a champ. I've only had to change the engine and transmission oils, air filter, front brakes, and tires. It's been a great ride!

  5. Jonathon Kunze 2024-09-03

The car is overall nice, but it could use some improvement in terms of power and interior storage.
