2020 Honda Hr-v problems

honda logo

The Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda over three generations.

The first generation HR-V was based on the Honda Logo. It was marketed from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets – and featured three doors (1999–2003) or five doors (1999–2006). The two configurations were internally designated GH2 and GH4 respectively.

After a seven-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the nameplate for the second generation HR-V, based on the third-generation Honda Fit. Production began in late 2013 for the Japanese domestic market as the Honda Vezel (Japanese: ホンダ・ヴェゼル, Hepburn: Honda Vezeru), while production started in 2015 for North America, Australia, Brazil and select Asian markets as the HR-V. Apart from Japan, the model is also sold as the Vezel in China.

For the third-generation model, the nameplate is split between two different vehicles, one for the global market (sold as the Vezel in Japan), and a larger model based on the eleventh-generation Civic destined for North America and China. The latter model is sold outside those markets as the Honda ZR-V.

According to Honda, the name "HR-V" stands for "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle", while the name "Vezel" is coined from "bezel", the oblique faces of a cut gem, with the "V" for "vehicle".

Common 2020 Honda Hr-v problems

The 2020 Honda HR-V has several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are the details of the issues:

  • Poor paint quality: Several owners have reported issues with the HR-V's paint quality, including large patches of the roof paint flaking away after a few years of use, paint bubbling, and rust eating through the paint and bodywork.
  • Accelerator issues: Some HR-V owners have reported two issues regarding the car's accelerator. When the throttle is lightly applied from a stop, the vehicle can suddenly leap forward, as if the driver stomped on the gas pedal. In other cases, while driving at highway speeds, the HR-V would begin to slow down, even if the driver applies more throttle.
  • In-car electronics: Infotainment system (audio, GPS, phone), rear entertainment system, backup or other camera/sensors, head-up display. Owners have reported issues such as the radio freezing and rebooting, the display screen suddenly disappearing, and the display being fickle and coming and going.
  • Transmission issues: Delayed gear changes are the most widespread complaint from 2020 HR-V owners, showing up at around 1,500 miles. There are updates available for the transmission control module, which improves the speed of gear changes. Most dealerships will install these updates for free, while others charge around $100 for the labor.
  • Brake noise: Brake noise is another problem found on some 2020 HR-V models at roughly 10,000 miles. The noise is caused by brake pad wear. Changing out the brake pads costs around $150, while new rotors are $400 if they have been damaged.
  • Recall: The only recall on the 2020 Honda HR-V covers the rearview camera, which will not display an image. Honda will update the software on affected models for free.

These issues may affect the ownership experience of the 2020 Honda HR-V, and potential buyers should be aware of them before making a purchase decision.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
  • VIN: 3CZRU6H12LM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2020 Honda HR-V Sport with digital gauge cluster failure. The LCD screen that displays the gas level, vehicle mileage, and gear the vehicle is in has gone to a blank screen. Or at times, it will display random numbers and letters that don't translate to any meaning. As others have reported, this leads to us not knowing what our fuel level is or the gear the vehicle is in. There were no warning indications before this issues started occurring. It happens in all variations of temperatures.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-04
  • VIN: 3CZRU6H36LM
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The instrument panel suddenly went out without warning while driving for no known reason. I was unaware of my speed, gas gauge, oil level, etc. and had to return home. I took it to a mechanic who called the dealership. They said it would be $1700 just for the replacement instrument panel. A quick internet search shows that this is common among Honda HRVs and other similar models. Apparently the solder Honda uses in the factory is not holding up and causing electronic connections to fail. I should not have to pay $1700 plus labor to have a connection resoldered. If they replace it with a "new" instrument panel that will undoubtedly have the same original soldering job, it's just going to come loose again.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
  • VIN: 3CZRU5H57LM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: These system indicator lights repeatedly show on the dashboard. 1. Brake System 2. ACC LKAS 3. Land Departure Problem 4. Some Driver Assist Systems Cannot Operate: Clean Front Windshield 5. Lane Keeping Assist Problem LKAS 6. Collision Mitigation System Problem 7. Road Departure Mitigation System Problem 8. Auto High-Beam Problem 9. Adaptive Cruise Control Problem I have taken the car to two different Honda dealerships for diagnostic. The mechanic speculated it 'could' be a battery issue so I purchased a new battery. The problems didn't resolve. Then the mechanic stated it 'could' be the camera system and if so, I would need to replace for $1800. I cannot afford to spend $1800 for speculation and there's no guarantee the problem is resolved. This is a serious issue with Hondas as I have read. This is not a wear-tear issue. This is a system issue and I don't feel I should have to spend $1800 on a system malfunction. It's not the windshield containing dirt or debris because I've had the windshield cleaned in hopes it would remedy the problem. The car is only 3-4 years old and I shouldn't be spending major dollars on any kind of system issue. This should be a recall effort since so many others have had the same complaints. The car is too new and it only has 53K miles on it. I'm the only person who drives the car mainly to and from work. I go out of state maybe twice per year so the car is not driven harshly. I also keep current with maintenance requirements. Paying $1800 for a faulty camera speculatively is a cruel way to make money off of purchasers. I'd like to have this issue considered as recall.

The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V858000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and confirmed that parts were not yet available. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

Now it is happening more often. Sometimes it will start as it is being driven down the road. There is no warning lamp or anything that happens before it malfunctions. Unless we keep track of the fuel level, we run the risk of running out of gas while driving as the fuel level is part of the gauge.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-22
  • VIN: 3CZRU6H56LM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: This vehicle has some serious acceleration problems. Not only has this vehicle gone into limp mode on me on a very busy city road when it was only a couple of weeks old, but it also takes FOREVER for it to accelerate when pulling into traffic or while going up a hill. I have to press the gas pedal all the way down to the floor and still get nothing until I let up and press the gas again. I have had problems where the car will "spudder" and almost die as I'm exiting the highway coming to a stop and today it actually did completely die as I exited the highway and came to a stop at a red light. No check engine light or anything.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-05
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3CZRU5H5XLM
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was turning left into a parking spot at work with my foot slightly on the break when my engine revvved and my car accelerated at face pace and my brakes were unresponsive causing me to hit a parked truck in front of me. Upon impact my vehicle kept trying to accelerate causing me to keep pushing the truck until my front right side of my car broke off. My car STILL kept accelerating and went across the concrete parking block and finally came to a complete stop. Once stopped I could not get the vehicle to turn off. Within minutes the engine finally died. I work inside a chemical plant right next to a highly explosive unit so this could have been catastrophic. Not to mention the people that work there were coming into work as well and could have been pinned between the two vehicles. The plant I work at has thousands of employees. Had I been leaving work and crossing the highway and this occurred I would have been killed and most likely so would have others. I exit my job onto an extremely busy highway. A police report was not filed because it was inside the plant but several people witnessed it. I had to have my vehicle towed as it was too damaged to drive. I have not contacted Honda because I have seen numerous unresolved complaints so I doubt it would help. Prior to this accident I had no problems with the vehicle. My vehicle is in this shop still as this incident just happened 2 days ago. I would like to get rid of the vehicle but then someone else may buy it and have the same issue.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-06
  • VIN: 3CZRU5H52LM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Sometimes when I am driving on any road flat, incline, up a hill/mountain trying to merge into traffic/pass a vehicle. I think I covered all of the situations. There is a DRAMATIC LOSS OF POWER or a PLAY or SOMETHING where I have to push the accelerator all the way to the FLOOR in order for it to get gas or gain speed to pass or to accomplish the task at hand. My 2020 HR-V only has a little over 17,500 miles. I also only put in gas from QT which is a TOP TIER GASOLINE. So I don’t know what the problem is but I am going to end up having a wreck because of this or worse dying because of this problem.

And I have owned Hondas before. I told the dealership in Richmond Indiana and in Tampa Florida about this problem more than once. they both just brushed it off and told me it was normal. I have complained more than once because my brakes have locked up on me more than once. Sometimes, I am doing 35 miles an hour and while approaching a red light… I try to push down on my brakes a little bit and it may lock up. It’s not good… As I’ve said I have a many new cars and I have never had this problem. The consumer stated the car locked up again at 12 miles an hr.

Negative 2020 Honda Hr-v car reviews

  1. Maxwell Bode 2025-01-03

I purchased this car for city and commuter use. It's compact size makes it easy to park, and the cargo space is fantastic with a variety of cool interior configurations. I was even able to fit a washing machine inside with no problem! However, it doesn't feel as tight as my older Accord, and I can hear air whistling inside even with all the windows closed. The onboard navigation system is not very intuitive and requires passing through a ridiculous number of windows to get directions to a destination that is far away. The pick-up is okay, but not noteworthy. The mileage is fair, around 26-27mpg. The CVT paddles are not very useful. There isn't enough interior storage for small items, and the USB and other charging ports are hidden below the console near the floor, making them difficult to see and reach. The car drives well, and the seat warmers are good. Overall, it's a decent car that isn't great, but it's also not a million dollars.

  2. Dennis Armstrong 2024-10-04

I have been a loyal Honda owner for over 40 years and have always enjoyed their vehicles. The HRV has many of the features that I love about Hondas - it handles great, feels well-built, has many seating controls, is fuel-efficient, and is very roomy and comfortable inside. I especially love the AWD. However, I have had a few issues with this particular HRV. The back-up camera was dangling just two months after I purchased it, and I had to take it in for repairs. At 2,000 miles, I received warnings about the fuel emissions system and electric parking brake not working, but the dealership couldn't find anything wrong with it. They rebooted the computer and fixed the camera, all under warranty. At 8,000 miles, the air conditioner went out due to a rock going through the condenser, which cost me $650. I was disappointed that this happened, as rocks are common on every road. During the second year, I received the same messages about the emissions and parking brake systems, but the dealership couldn't find anything wrong and deleted the messages. Now, the two front electric windows are making a knocking sound when rolled up too far. Although I haven't taken it in yet, I am frustrated with these issues and have decided not to keep the car. Despite these problems, I have been able to drive it and the dealership has provided me with a courtesy car each time I have taken it in for repairs. As a retiree, I am fortunate to have the flexibility to take it in for repairs, but I can understand how frustrating it would be for someone who has to take time off work to do so.

If you're considering the HRV Sport, make sure to have a checklist. I recently traded in my Civic for the HRV and unfortunately, I'm not happy with it. The center console is smaller, which is a bummer, and some features like the digital speedometer, the i button which showed you the mileage left on gas, and the percentage of oil are gone. If you're a fan of push start and keyless entry, I wouldn't recommend switching back to a key. I really miss the keyless entry. Additionally, the right side camera is missing, which is a big disappointment. There's also no light in the sun visor. Overall, I'm not happy with this truck and I wish there was some type of exchange or return policy because I would take my Civic back in a heartbeat. I feel like the salesman may have misled me, and that's disappointing. I tried to get in contact for almost a week and never received a return call.

I was surprised by the lack of up-to-date safety equipment. It seems that they are falling behind the other brands in this sub-compact niche.

I absolutely adore my 2020 HR-V Sport! The interior is incredibly spacious and I especially love how the back seats fold down completely flat, providing ample room for all my shopping trips. In fact, I was able to fit a freezer, a 50” TV, and all my groceries in one go! The car comes with a host of fantastic safety features and luxurious amenities as standard. It's also incredibly nimble and can fit into any parking space with ease. Opting for the Sport trim level was definitely worth it, as it comes with a range of extras and AWD. I was particularly impressed with how well it handled in the snow. All in all, I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

This car is super cute, has lots of room, comes in a snazzy color, and has great gas mileage.

Congratulations on your purchase of a used 2020 touring AWD model! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it, especially the AWD which is perfect for the mountain roads you take to work. The flat-folding back seats are a great feature for your pets, and it's wonderful that you finally have safety features. The braking is especially impressive! With good long-term predicted reliability, it sounds like you'll be able to enjoy your car for many years to come. It's a shame that they're no longer making the touring trim, but it's great that you were able to get your hands on one. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
