The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common 1999 Gmc Safari problems

The 1999 GMC Safari is known to have engine problems, with the most reported issue being engine stalls while driving.

Another common problem with the 1999 GMC Safari is related to the ABS light due to brake system control unit failure. This issue can affect the vehicle's braking system, making it difficult to stop the car safely.

The 1999 GMC Safari may also have issues with the starter, as reported by a car owner who replaced the starter, spark plugs, wires, air filter, mass airflow sensor, crankshaft position sensor, ignition control module, rotor, distributor cap, and checked the fuel pressure at the fuel check valve on top of the engine. Despite these efforts, the car still wouldn't start, indicating a more complex problem with the vehicle's ignition system.

Other issues reported by GMC Safari owners include engine stalls while driving, rough idle when in gear, rear doors that won't open, transfer case lockup, heater not working, engine problems, electrical issues, HVAC problems, suspension problems, and brakes problems. These issues can affect various parts of the vehicle, from the engine and electrical system to the brakes and suspension.

In summary, the 1999 GMC Safari has several common problems, including engine stalls while driving, ABS light due to brake system control unit failure, and issues with the starter, ignition system, and other parts of the vehicle. These problems can be costly to fix and may affect the vehicle's safety and reliability.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-05-04
  • VIN: 1GKEL19W8XB
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THIS MORNING (5/4/05) WHILE DRIVING MY 1999 GMC SAFARI, I EXPERIENCED A JOLT AND A HIGH RPM REV AND A LONG 1-2 SHIFT. I GOT TO MY DESTINATION (1/4 MILE UP THE ROAD) AND THEN DISCOVERED THAT I HAD NO REVERSE. I IMMEDIATELY DROVE TO THE DEALER (A 6-MILE DRIVE). I NOTICED IN ADDITION TO NO REVERSE, THERE WAS ALSO NO OVERDRIVE (4TH GEAR). THE PRELIMINARY DIAGNOSIS FROM THE DEALER IS A FAILED SUN SHELL ASSEMBLY. THEY (THE DEALER) INDENTIFIES THIS AS A COMMON PROBLEM. TO REPAIR IT REQUIRES A MAJOR OVERHAUL A NEARLY $2000.00 REPAIR. I'M A MEMBER OF IATN (INTERNATION AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIANS' NETWORK) AND I DID A SERACH OF THIS CONCERN AND LEARNED THAT THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE. I ALSO LEARNED THAT GM HAS A TSB ON THIS CONCERN (I DON'T KNOW THE NUMBER OR NATURE OF THE TSB). AT 6-YEARS OF AGE AND 88,000 MILES THIS (IN MY ESTIMATION) IS A PREMATURE FAILURE. THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN SERVICED (FLUSHED AND FILTER REPLACEMENT) TWICE IN THE PAST THREE YEARS AND HAS NOT BEEN ABUSED. I DO TOW TWO SNOWMOBILES IN THE WINTER, BUT THE WEIGHT IS BY FAR WITHIN THE PARAMETERS STATED FOR THIS VEHICLE. I CALLED THE GM SERVICE ASSISTANCE CENTER AND THE WOMAN ACKNOWLEDGED THE PATTERN FAILURE, BUT SAID THEIR "POLICY" FOR GOODWILL ASSISTANCE IS CAPPED AT 72,000 MILES, MY VEHICLE HAS 88,000 MILES. SHE WAS PREPARED TO OFFER ME SOME KIND OF VOUCHER TO BE USED TOWARD THE PURCHASE OF A NEW GM VEHICLE, BUT I'M NOT INTERESTED IN THAT. THERE'S CLEARLY A PRODUCT CONCERN, AND IF GM IS WILLING TO GIVE ME A DEAL ON A NEW CAR, WHY DON'T THEY GIVE ME A "DEAL" ON REPAIRING THIS ONE? ANYWAY, THAT'S MY COMPLAINT.

Negative 1999 Gmc Safari car reviews

  1. Carson Mosciski 2024-11-16

This vehicle is designed for rugged activities such as towing boats, but unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with the brakes and front end. I had to replace the front brakes and rotors at only 20,000 miles, and the rotors were too worn to be turned. Additionally, the general tires needed to be replaced at 30,000 miles, and new idler arms were required at 36,000 miles. Despite these issues, I have only used the vehicle for pleasure and to tow my boat less than 20 miles a year. It is important to note that these repairs were not covered under warranty, but I am confident in my decision to invest in this vehicle for its intended purposes.

  2. Izaiah Schimmel 2024-10-01

As listed in the review section, not bad for an American car.

  3. Lisandro Gottlieb 2024-09-25

This vehicle is a pleasure to drive and is perfect for shopping and long trips. Although we have had to replace several parts, including window motors, a seat motor, an alternator, a fuel pump, a wiper circuit board, and other various items, some under warranty and some not, we have always been able to get it fixed. When I complained to GMC about the fuel pump, they offered me an $800 certificate towards a new GMC product, which unfortunately expired before the pump went out. Yesterday, we experienced an issue with the blower motor switch, which only worked on high. Despite these challenges, we remain confident in the overall quality of this vehicle.

  4. Houston Baumbach 2024-08-13

If you are considering buying a Safari van, I would like to share my experience with you. Unfortunately, I had some issues with my vehicle and had to have it bought back under the Lemon Law. However, I would like to advise you to always buy a warranty to avoid any unexpected expenses. Despite my negative experience, I believe that with proper care and maintenance, these vehicles can be reliable. I hope this information helps you make an informed decision.

  5. Gabriel Kshlerin 2024-07-29

This vehicle has had some issues with electrical problems and battery life, but overall it has been reliable. The front end may wear tires quickly, but proper alignment can help mitigate this. It is worth noting that the front seats may be a bit cramped for those who require more head or leg room. However, if you are looking for a reliable car, this one is definitely worth considering.

Positive 1999 Gmc Safari car reviews

  1. Presley Pollich 2024-10-16

We purchased this van a few years ago and have been using it extensively ever since. My wife uses it daily to transport our three kids, and we have taken it on many long trips. Despite the wear and tear, it remains spacious and comfortable. We did have to replace the alternator, but it was an easy fix. Additionally, the front brakes wear out a bit faster than some other cars, but it's not a major issue. Overall, we really love this van (even though it's a bit square-looking!). We haven't found anything else on the market that can match its versatility and reliability.

  2. Cordell Beer 2024-09-02

Good strong minivan. It has great towing capacity. The kids aren't cramped like in smaller minivans. It's also very safe and built tough.

  3. Newell O'Kon 2024-07-04

I have a trailer and it's the only thing that can carry 8 people plus a 5,000 pound trailer without any difficulty.

  4. Timothy Graham 2024-05-08

This is a very useful vehicle with more power than I need. It has good mileage, especially with 6 people in it. It is also very reliable and requires low maintenance.

  5. Reece Nader 2024-03-29

I appreciate everything about it, however, due to my short legs and arthritis, I find it challenging to enter and exit the vehicle.
