2019 Honda Hr-v problems

honda logo

The Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda over three generations.

The first generation HR-V was based on the Honda Logo. It was marketed from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets – and featured three doors (1999–2003) or five doors (1999–2006). The two configurations were internally designated GH2 and GH4 respectively.

After a seven-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the nameplate for the second generation HR-V, based on the third-generation Honda Fit. Production began in late 2013 for the Japanese domestic market as the Honda Vezel (Japanese: ホンダ・ヴェゼル, Hepburn: Honda Vezeru), while production started in 2015 for North America, Australia, Brazil and select Asian markets as the HR-V. Apart from Japan, the model is also sold as the Vezel in China.

For the third-generation model, the nameplate is split between two different vehicles, one for the global market (sold as the Vezel in Japan), and a larger model based on the eleventh-generation Civic destined for North America and China. The latter model is sold outside those markets as the Honda ZR-V.

According to Honda, the name "HR-V" stands for "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle", while the name "Vezel" is coined from "bezel", the oblique faces of a cut gem, with the "V" for "vehicle".

Common 2019 Honda Hr-v problems

The 2019 Honda HR-V, while generally considered a reliable vehicle, has some problems that may affect the ownership experience. One of the main trouble spots for this model year is the fuel propulsion system. Reports have been made of the fuel gauge going blank upon starting the car, requiring a restart and pressing the oil life button to restore it. Additionally, there have been instances where the digital gauge, including the odometer and fuel gauge, would randomly go blank, preventing the driver from knowing the fuel level. These issues are not isolated to one specific transmission component, and they have been reported to occur at relatively low mileages, around 5,000 to 8,000 miles, indicating potential manufacturing or design flaws.

Another common issue with the Honda HR-V, affecting various model years, is related to the window gaskets, specifically the rubber that keeps the windows sealed. Many owners have reported issues with the window gaskets, which can lead to problems such as water leaks and window rattling. This issue has been widely reported across different model years, including the 2019 HR-V.

In addition to the fuel propulsion system and window gasket problems, some Honda HR-V owners have reported issues with the vehicle's paint quality. Some users have reported large patches of the roof paint flaking away after a few years of use, while others have experienced paint bubbling. There have also been reports of rust eating through the paint and bodywork. These issues can be costly to repair, with repainting a car potentially costing thousands of dollars, depending on how much of the car needs to be repainted.

When it comes to the Honda HR-V's reliability, it is important to note that a car's reliability and longevity are inextricably tied to how the vehicle is taken care of, the maintenance schedule, driving habits, and the climate in which the car is driven. Regular maintenance, conservative driving habits, and living in a moderate climate can all contribute to a more reliable and long-lasting vehicle.

In summary, the 2019 Honda HR-V has some problems that may affect the ownership experience, primarily related to the fuel propulsion system and window gaskets. Additionally, issues with paint quality have been reported across various model years. However, many of these issues can be mitigated with proper maintenance and care.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 3CZRU6H19KG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: 8/9/24 was the first time we noticed the gas/mileage gauge disappearing. It would do this almost everyday for no apparent reason leaving the driver (usually my teenage daughters) not knowing how much gas they had left. This particular disappearance happens on a regular basis which is quite concerning not knowing how much gas you have left. Also on 8/23/24 a light came on that said check fuel cap along with the yellow check engine light, yellow parking brake and flashing park symbol. These lights stayed on minus the fuel cap light for about 3 weeks. They have disappeared with now with only the issue of the disappearing fuel/mileage gauge remaining an off/on issue (but as stated above usually on a daily basis.) We replaced the fuels cap in case there was an issue and also took it to a Honda dealership on 9/27/24. They didn't check diagnostics as the other icons had turned off, but the gas gauge was still missing. They said it wouldn't show codes since the icons were missing. I also called the Honda corporation regarding this safety issue as there are multiple reports of this happening to others on several Honda forums with Honda HRV ranging from 2016-2020. It usually happens in this manner with the fuel gauge disappearing first then other icons coming off/on.

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
  • VIN: 3CZRU6H57KM
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The road assist / warning systems on dashboard malfunctioned, suddenly turning on and off, all at once. This caused A safety risk, by a startling distraction while driving, and worrisome stress while the car was at rest. The the problem was reproduced or confirmed by a dealer service rep who stated the car was unsafe to drive. They witnessed all warning lights, messages flashing on and off. This malfunction occurred, June 19-20, 2024. In retrospect, the break warning light would flash on for no reason and slightly break, or engine would stall or lose velocity while driving. The car is currently being serviced by the dealership. Their assessment is the front camera needs replaced. This car is under the warranty for mileage (not driven much during the pandemic), but due to the year, it is outside of warrenty. Obviously, the cause is not wear and tear, but a faulty camera. This is concerning, given the safety issue , should this be cause for a recall and repairs, including replacement part and services, the responsibility of the Honda company and not the car owner/driver.

Negative 2019 Honda Hr-v car reviews

  1. Earl Kub 2024-08-12

Hi there! I bought my car in the summer of 2019 and have driven less than 5,000 miles. Unfortunately, my car suddenly stopped today. Despite the fuel tank being halfway full and everything being in perfect condition, the car started vibrating and shaking before braking and turning off by itself. I had a fuel tank recall a few months ago, which was a bit concerning. Overall, I wouldn't recommend Honda or the HR-V to anyone.

  2. Ubaldo Balistreri 2024-07-24

Since purchasing this vehicle new in 2019, I have unfortunately experienced a number of issues, including multiple recalls for the fuel pump and brakes. Recently, a water leak has developed, causing some damage to the electronics system and alarm. I have heard similar reports from other Honda HRV owners. Despite these challenges, I am confident that the vehicle will be repaired under warranty, and I look forward to enjoying many more miles of safe and reliable driving.

  3. Gerard Dickens 2024-05-04

I have owned several Honda's in the past, but unfortunately, the HR-V did not meet my expectations. Personally, I found the car to be lacking in power, especially when accelerating from a red light. Additionally, the engine noise was quite loud and rough. Another downside was that the sunroof cannot be opened while the car is in motion, which can be inconvenient. Lastly, the compartments in the car, aside from the two drink holders, were quite small and not very practical. Although the exterior of the car looks nice, I cannot recommend it based on my experience.

Despite having purchased a new 2019 AWD HR-V Sport and having it 100% dealer serviced, the transmission failed at 85K miles. However, I was pleased to learn that Honda would cover the cost of repairs if I contributed $1000 and paid for an alignment. It is worth noting that I had no other issues with the vehicle up to this point, and even the tires are still original. I primarily use this car on the highway, and it has an average fuel economy of 30mpg. I appreciate the ample cargo space, although I do feel that it is somewhat underpowered.

I am thoroughly enjoying my new car, however, I have noticed that the black paint on the rocker panels is fading near the rear tires. Although the entire rocker panel on both sides is fading, it is particularly noticeable in the curves near the rear. Despite this issue, I am confident that a solution can be found. I have contacted Honda regarding the warranty details, and while they initially stated that there was nothing they could do, I am confident that we can work together to find a resolution.

The HRV may be small in size, but it has a surprisingly spacious interior, with ample legroom and cargo space/solutions. I find the 140 hp engine to be perfectly adequate in terms of power, as I have not experienced any issues with acceleration or engine noise. The SUV drives well and boasts excellent fuel economy, with a range of 28-31 mpg depending on whether I'm driving in the city or on the highway. I particularly appreciate the auto door locks and leather interior of the EXL model. Overall, I am extremely happy with the HRV!

You can keep the blind spot camera on at all times. Additionally, you can set the brake so that when you are braking frequently, you can take your foot off the brake. However, in the gas-saving mode, the pickup may not be as great.

I recently purchased a brand new HR-V Sport AWD and all recalls have been fixed. The A/C issue has been resolved and I must say, it's an awesome ride! Although it may not have all the luxury features, it definitely gets the job done. I've noticed some people complain about the car's acceleration, but I personally have had no issues. It's important to remember that the car picks the driver, not the other way around. I've now had this SUV for 3 years and have driven it to Maryland and back with no issues. It currently has over 40k miles and still runs like it's brand new. I've had no hiccups and have maintained the fluids at recommended intervals. It's a great ride, averaging 30 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway, and it's an AWD Sport! UPDATE: I've written many reviews on the 2019 Honda HR-V Sport AWD and I must say, it's a great SUV. Although the gas mileage on paper doesn't match what it actually gets, I still average 30-32 mpg in the city and 36-38 mpg on the highway at a normal speed of 70 mph. It may not be loaded with features, but with a savvy driver, this SUV delivers! Some people may complain about the acceleration, but it's important to remember that it's not built for impatient drivers with an excessive lead foot. It's a family SUV that works and performs well, and I would even say it performs better than its counterparts like the CRV. If you have one, take good care of it and it will take care of you when you need it most!

Hi there! Just wanted to share that we recently traded in our 2017 leased Honda Civic for a 2019 HR-V. We're really enjoying it so far (we've only had it for a few days). We travel across the country twice a year and needed more space for our 'stuff' since we're gone for 2-1/2 months. The HR-V has been a great fit for us!

Second one I have owned and love it! No lag in acceleration. Great gas mileage. Smooth ride. Gorgeous interior. PERFECT.
