The Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda over three generations.

The first generation HR-V was based on the Honda Logo. It was marketed from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets – and featured three doors (1999–2003) or five doors (1999–2006). The two configurations were internally designated GH2 and GH4 respectively.

After a seven-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the nameplate for the second generation HR-V, based on the third-generation Honda Fit. Production began in late 2013 for the Japanese domestic market as the Honda Vezel (Japanese: ホンダ・ヴェゼル, Hepburn: Honda Vezeru), while production started in 2015 for North America, Australia, Brazil and select Asian markets as the HR-V. Apart from Japan, the model is also sold as the Vezel in China.

For the third-generation model, the nameplate is split between two different vehicles, one for the global market (sold as the Vezel in Japan), and a larger model based on the eleventh-generation Civic destined for North America and China. The latter model is sold outside those markets as the Honda ZR-V.

According to Honda, the name "HR-V" stands for "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle", while the name "Vezel" is coined from "bezel", the oblique faces of a cut gem, with the "V" for "vehicle".

Common Honda Hr-v problems

The Honda HR-V is a popular subcompact crossover SUV known for its lively handling, generous cargo space, good fuel economy, and wide range of useful features:

  • Low-quality paint: This is the most common problem reported by Honda HR-V owners. In some instances, owners complained about the paint on the crossover SUV bubbling, while others reported that, after a few years of driving, large sections of paint would flake off the roof. Rust can also corrode the paint and bodywork, requiring repainting of the HR-V, which can cost thousands of dollars depending on the extent of the paint problem.
  • Complications with the accelerator: There are two variations of this problem. The first one is when drivers lightly press on the throttle from a complete stop, and the crossover SUV suddenly leaps forward as if someone slammed on the gas pedal. The second issue occurs when driving at highway speeds, where the HR-V starts to slow down and continues to lose speed, even when applying more throttle. To address either of these accelerator complications, a mechanic must first conduct a diagnostic check to get to the root of the problem. The solution could be as simple as an electric control (ECU) update, which Honda might provide for free. However, at the opposite end of the repair spectrum, a part of the engine bay might need to be replaced, which can cost owners around a few hundred dollars.
  • Loose or dislodged window gaskets: A window gasket is the rubber section at the window frame that forms a tight seal when the windows are rolled up to the top. It keeps rain, wind, and other weather elements out of the vehicle. However, HR-V drivers have complained about the window gaskets becoming loose or getting dislodged. Rectifying this issue typically requires replacing the window gaskets, which consist of four parts. All four cost around $100, along with the cost of labor if completed by a service center.

It is important to note that most HR-V models are not affected by these issues, and they don't necessarily affect all model years. However, they are the most frequently reported problems, so it is essential to be aware of them when considering the purchase of a Honda HR-V.

Latest negative Honda Hr-v car reviews

  1. Nicola Nienow 2025-02-15

    Vehicle year: 2020

Reaching into the compartment between seats that has a cover may wrench your shoulder, it is so far back (and that's with the seat all the way back). However, the roomy interior and comfy seats make up for it. Additionally, the suspension is stiff, so you will feel all the bumps, but it's still better than what I was driving. It's not an aspirational vehicle, but it's a practical choice. It's worth noting that it comes without a cover for the cargo area, which is a bit chintzy and requires an extra add-on cost.

  2. Gayle Wilderman 2025-02-13

    Vehicle year: 2023

I purchased a HRV EXL in June 2022. Unfortunately, the rear window broke on January 10th when I closed the driver's door. Despite encountering backorder issues, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon. While it has been frustrating not being able to drive my car, I am still satisfied with the quality of the vehicle.

  3. Kelley Durgan 2025-02-08

    Vehicle year: 2018

Great overall package! However, it seems that the device could benefit from a bit more power.

  4. Elton Buckridge 2025-02-07

    Vehicle year: 2022

I purchased the HR-V EX L in February 2022 as a replacement vehicle, but unfortunately, I had a less than ideal experience with the Westport dealership. Despite the sticker price, they added an extra $5,000 to the total, which was disappointing. While the car is not as quiet as my former CRV, I have found it to be a decent ride overall. However, I have experienced some issues with the screen and smartphone connectivity, which can be frustrating. Additionally, the center console could have been designed better as it lacks storage and the phone port is difficult to reach. Despite these setbacks, the seats are comfortable and the ride is decent. As a long-time Honda owner, I had high expectations for this car, but it has not lived up to them. Nonetheless, I remain hopeful that future models will improve upon these issues.

  5. Alfonzo Ziemann 2025-01-26

    Vehicle year: 2021

The car's engine may not be the strongest and the cargo space is limited, but it's still a great option for short trips around town. It's important to keep in mind that for longer journeys, it may not be the most comfortable ride.

Latest positive Honda Hr-v car reviews

  1. Jason Marvin 2025-02-20

    Vehicle year: 2023

The car is overall great, above average. Although the front seats are very hard, there is plenty of room up front. The back seats are better, but it's recommended to bring a cushion for long rides. I love the outside styling, which is better than the competition. I got a great grey color, and the black interior is attractive and well-appointed. The car has enough power to get along, and the fuel economy is very good. I finally sold an 18-year-old Element to buy this, and I'm happy. However, Honda really needs to do something about the hard front seats.

  2. Lourdes Bayer 2025-02-17

    Vehicle year: 2016

I took my time to drive my HR before writing this review. Let's start with my needs. The last time I bought a car was in 1998, so I was pleasantly surprised by all the new features such as USB ports, backup cameras, push button start, and heated seats. I was looking for a car that would fit in my garage, so it had to be less than 175 inches long. I also wanted AWD because I plan to move to Denver in a few years when I retire. Cargo space was also important to me for trips to Home Depot. I opted for leather seats because they last longer and are easier to get in and out of the car. I promised my son I would get a car with 4 doors this time because it was difficult to get my grandson's car seat in and out of my old car. The HR met all my needs and then some. The only issue I had was with the driver's seat. As a short person, my specific back issue requires the seat to be straight up, not tilted back, which caused the headrest to tilt too far forward. I took the headrest off completely, but that didn't give my neck any support. I finally put the headrest back on, but backwards, and now it's perfect. (short people problems!) Sometimes I feel like this car is so automatic, I could take a nap on my way to work. The headlights are set to automatic, the temperature is set to stay the same all year round, and the audio plays my MP3 player while my Android phone is synced up. In short, I am extremely satisfied with my choice. It truly is 21st century luxury.

  3. Silas Haley 2025-02-16

    Vehicle year: 2019

I recently traded in my 2018 Civic Hatchback for the 2019 HRV Sport AWD and I must say, I am absolutely loving it! The car is a perfect blend of modern technology and classic features, which made it easy for me to adjust to. The paddle shifters are particularly useful for braking. I have found that keeping the car clean and waxed helps to prevent paint fading. While the gas mileage may not be ideal for stop-and-go city driving or short commutes, it's simply a matter of physics. Today's vehicles are designed for longer commutes, not quick trips. Despite this, I still find the space and convenience of the car to be perfect for my family of five. Overall, I am extremely happy with my choice and would highly recommend the HRV Sport AWD to anyone in the market for a new car.

Hey there! If you're considering the HRV, I highly recommend taking it for a test drive yourself. Don't let the naysayers fool you - it's definitely not slow! I have the 2023 HRV sport trim and it's packed with tons of features as standard. You'll love the adaptive cruise control, lane departure, road departure mitigation, frontal collision avoidance, pedestrian front and rear cross traffic warning, rear back up camera with different angles/views, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic lights with automatic dimming, heated front cloth seats with sport copper accent stitching, and black painted 18 rims with a more sporty design than the ex/ EXL trims. It's seriously loaded with features - I'm leaving several out because there are so many, and they're all standard too! The only downside is that there aren't any rear AC vents or a center folding armrest for back passengers, but it's usually just me driving by myself anyway. As far as driving goes, it's smooth, fairly quiet, and extremely fuel efficient. I have a lead foot and still get an average of 31.4 mpg in the city and 40+ mpg on the highway cruising around 55 to 65mph. On the interstate driving 70 to 85 mph, I average 34.2 mpg. Needless to say, I'm blown away by the performance and fuel efficiency. Mine is just the standard front-wheel drive, but I didn't get AWD because it's a complete waste of money here in the south. If you go with AWD, expect lower fuel mileage and higher maintenance costs than the standard FWD configuration. While it's not a race car, it's definitely adequate and pretty quick when going from 30 mph to 70 mph. The only time it sounds loud and buzzy is when you're really deep into the throttle - otherwise, it's pretty quiet. Overall, it's hard to beat the standard features to price ratio and Honda's reliability reputation. If you take care of it and maintain it properly, this HRV should easily last 200 to 350 thousand miles - easily 10 to 15 years. Let me know if you have any questions!Insurance in my case is cheaper because of all the standard safety features. I almost forgot about the keyless proximity fob, push button, advanced lock options, and advanced rolling down of windows with the fob, which are standard for sport trims and EXL trims. The same features, minus remote start, are standard for the base lx trim. Update: 7k miles later and I'm still loving this little crossover!

We decided to go with the CR-V because its size better met our needs. After test driving both the 2020 HR-V and CR-V models, we found that the HR-V had plenty of power to safely enter freeways, despite claims to the contrary. The seats were comfortable and even the base model had a nice set of options. Surprisingly, there was a lot of legroom in the rear seats, even for someone as tall as me (6ft 3in). If you're looking for something a bit smaller with higher MPG, I would definitely recommend the HR-V. Both vehicles are solid, high-quality options that are reasonably priced. We ultimately chose the CR-V simply because we had two great experiences with it in the past.
