Honda Hr-v problems

honda logo

The Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda over three generations.

The first generation HR-V was based on the Honda Logo. It was marketed from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets – and featured three doors (1999–2003) or five doors (1999–2006). The two configurations were internally designated GH2 and GH4 respectively.

After a seven-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the nameplate for the second generation HR-V, based on the third-generation Honda Fit. Production began in late 2013 for the Japanese domestic market as the Honda Vezel (Japanese: ホンダ・ヴェゼル, Hepburn: Honda Vezeru), while production started in 2015 for North America, Australia, Brazil and select Asian markets as the HR-V. Apart from Japan, the model is also sold as the Vezel in China.

For the third-generation model, the nameplate is split between two different vehicles, one for the global market (sold as the Vezel in Japan), and a larger model based on the eleventh-generation Civic destined for North America and China. The latter model is sold outside those markets as the Honda ZR-V.

According to Honda, the name "HR-V" stands for "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle", while the name "Vezel" is coined from "bezel", the oblique faces of a cut gem, with the "V" for "vehicle".

Common Honda Hr-v problems

The Honda HR-V is a popular subcompact crossover SUV known for its lively handling, generous cargo space, good fuel economy, and wide range of useful features:

  • Low-quality paint: This is the most common problem reported by Honda HR-V owners. In some instances, owners complained about the paint on the crossover SUV bubbling, while others reported that, after a few years of driving, large sections of paint would flake off the roof. Rust can also corrode the paint and bodywork, requiring repainting of the HR-V, which can cost thousands of dollars depending on the extent of the paint problem.
  • Complications with the accelerator: There are two variations of this problem. The first one is when drivers lightly press on the throttle from a complete stop, and the crossover SUV suddenly leaps forward as if someone slammed on the gas pedal. The second issue occurs when driving at highway speeds, where the HR-V starts to slow down and continues to lose speed, even when applying more throttle. To address either of these accelerator complications, a mechanic must first conduct a diagnostic check to get to the root of the problem. The solution could be as simple as an electric control (ECU) update, which Honda might provide for free. However, at the opposite end of the repair spectrum, a part of the engine bay might need to be replaced, which can cost owners around a few hundred dollars.
  • Loose or dislodged window gaskets: A window gasket is the rubber section at the window frame that forms a tight seal when the windows are rolled up to the top. It keeps rain, wind, and other weather elements out of the vehicle. However, HR-V drivers have complained about the window gaskets becoming loose or getting dislodged. Rectifying this issue typically requires replacing the window gaskets, which consist of four parts. All four cost around $100, along with the cost of labor if completed by a service center.

It is important to note that most HR-V models are not affected by these issues, and they don't necessarily affect all model years. However, they are the most frequently reported problems, so it is essential to be aware of them when considering the purchase of a Honda HR-V.

Latest negative Honda Hr-v car reviews

  1. Kennith Kiehn 2025-07-08

    Vehicle year: 2019

Despite being a loyal customer of Honda for 10 years and having purchased 5 cars from them, my recent experience with my new car has been disappointing. The car has had issues with Bluetooth, GPS, electricals, and missing parts from the manufacturer, which have not been resolved despite multiple visits to the dealership. I have had to escalate the matter to the attorney general for arbitration, and it is unfortunate that it had to come to this. I hope Honda takes responsibility for their product and provides a satisfactory resolution.

  2. Marc Dietrich 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2023

After owning a CR-V for a few years and enjoying it, we decided to purchase a second Honda, the redesigned HR-V. Although there are some drawbacks, I am confident in my decision to buy this car. The styling is great, and the cargo space is ample, especially when the seats are folded down. The interior layout, particularly the center console, is well-designed, and the safety features work well. While the gas mileage is average at best, and the car lacks power, especially given its fuel efficiency, the push-open gas cap has malfunctioned a few times, causing the latch on the door panel to break. Additionally, the seat belt mechanism has stuck repeatedly, and the back seats lack creature comforts such as a dedicated power source or fold-down center for drink holders. The wireless charger only works about 75% of the time, and the trade-in value is currently low compared to the retail price.

  3. Myron Dicki 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2017

I have been experiencing issues with my HRV for the past year, including continuous door locking and unlocking, a hatch that would not open, and a key fob locked in the car. Despite bringing these issues to the attention of Valley Honda dealership, they were unable to provide a clear reason for the problems and dismissed my concerns. Additionally, the passenger seat leather had a small imperfection. I was dissatisfied with the dealership's lack of action and decided to trade in my HRV at Delaney Honda in Indiana, PA. The staff at Delaney Honda were friendly, competent, and made the purchase and trade-in process a pleasure. They also informed me that I had an extended warranty on my HRV, which Valley Honda had failed to disclose. After following up with Valley Honda's sales manager, I received a full refund for the extended warranty. I highly recommend Delaney Honda for their integrity and honesty when it comes to purchasing a new vehicle.

  4. David Donnelly 2025-06-18

    Vehicle year: 2017

I really enjoyed my HR-V when I first purchased it. It had a sunroof, Bluetooth, and some great camera features, like the right turn camera located in the side mirror (although I wish they had put one on the left side too). Unfortunately, after being rear-ended at a traffic light, my HR-V hasn't been the same. The dealership replaced my back hatch, which fixed the issue for a while, but then it started making a rattling noise. They said it was the strut, so they replaced it, but I've been in and out of the dealership for the same noise ever since. They've replaced both struts, shocks, and anything else they could think of, but the noise persists. It's really frustrating to have this problem with a brand new vehicle. I also have an issue with the windshield. I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, but I feel like the windshield is at a weird angle or too close to the driver because the way the sun beats down on me is like no other car I've been in. I have to turn the A/C on full blast to even feel a little bit of relief, which makes me sweat while driving. I hope I'm not the only one experiencing this. Lastly, I'm not a fan of the 4-cylinder, but that's just my personal preference. I see they came out with a turbo option in the 2018 version, which would have been nice. Overall, I love the car, but I wish the windshield was different.

  5. Norval Harvey 2025-05-29

    Vehicle year: 2020

I bought my HRV a year ago today, on October 4th, 2019. I needed something to drive in the winter and for general running around. As my first Honda vehicle in 26 years, and having loved my old Prelude, I had high hopes for the HRV. However, it has not met my expectations. Unfortunately, everything about this vehicle is loud, from the suspension to the wind noise and glove box rattle. I had to take it in 3 times before they fixed the glove box rattle. I also asked them to check the window and door seals as the highway wind noise is insanely loud. The suspension works about as well as my old 1977 Ford F250. Additionally, the seat belt is so sensitive that it frequently locks up while I am just trying to pull it out to put it on. To top it off, I had a wiper arm fly off while driving down the highway just two weeks after purchasing the vehicle. Despite my disappointment, I am planning to trade it in soon on a Kia, after test driving one last week and liking it much more than my Honda.

  1. Geovanni Hettinger 2025-07-11

    Vehicle year: 2016

My wife and I were considering the Honda CRV, but after reading reviews about the idling vibration problem, we decided to wait a few months to see if the HRV would be a better fit for us. To our delight, it was love at first sight and we were sold after the first test drive. After driving it for 1200 miles, we can confidently say that it has exceeded our expectations. The only minor issue we have encountered is that the engine is not ideal for quick acceleration, but it performs exceptionally well in all other aspects and has impressive fuel efficiency. For those who enjoy a more spirited driving experience, the sport mode with its simple manual gear shifting is a lot of fun. We highly recommend taking it for a test drive. The fuel efficiency is also worth mentioning, as it has been a great benefit for us.

I have been leasing the CR-V for the past 15 years and have always loved them, except for when they removed the folding tray between the front seats. It made it easy to tend to a crabby toddler in the back. However, times have changed and I was looking for a smaller monthly payment and didn't need the extra space of the CR-V. I test drove the HRV and found that I loved it just as much, even though it has a little less horsepower than my previous CR-V. The great mpg and lower price won me over. With the EX AWD, I was able to get all the features I had in my CR-V, except for remote start, which I had installed later to keep my monthly payment within budget. I debated on the Accord, but I couldn't get used to the feeling of sitting so low to the ground. I have a short drive to work, but many hills, so I needed the AWD. The magic seats are awesome, and I've been able to fit most anything. I like to crate my dog while driving, and there's plenty of room in the back for his crate. I was sold on that cosmic orange color too! I can confidently say that I'll be sticking with the HRV in the future.

I was searching for a manual Crossover as my Nissan Juke couldn't accommodate an adult of my height in the back seat. Additionally, I was looking for a Crossover that could provide better gas mileage than my Nissan. After considering the CX-5, I decided to go with the HRV Ex as it met my requirements. Now, I have plenty of room for my family and luggage. I am pleased to report that I have been getting great gas mileage so far, averaging 34, and the AC system is fantastic. No one complains about the temperature in the car...lol.

As a driving instructor, I highly recommend the Honda HRV. It offers excellent visibility, reliability, and safety features. The engine provides enough power for a teenager to drive comfortably without the risk of losing control. Additionally, the Honda HRV is a lighter car compared to heavy Ford trucks or beefy Chevys, making it a better choice. Unlike rear-wheel drive cars like Fords and Chevys, the Honda HRV is easier to control and less likely to spin in turns.
