Honda Hr-v problems

honda logo

The Honda HR-V is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda over three generations.

The first generation HR-V was based on the Honda Logo. It was marketed from 1999 to 2006 in Europe, Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets – and featured three doors (1999–2003) or five doors (1999–2006). The two configurations were internally designated GH2 and GH4 respectively.

After a seven-year hiatus, Honda reintroduced the nameplate for the second generation HR-V, based on the third-generation Honda Fit. Production began in late 2013 for the Japanese domestic market as the Honda Vezel (Japanese: ホンダ・ヴェゼル, Hepburn: Honda Vezeru), while production started in 2015 for North America, Australia, Brazil and select Asian markets as the HR-V. Apart from Japan, the model is also sold as the Vezel in China.

For the third-generation model, the nameplate is split between two different vehicles, one for the global market (sold as the Vezel in Japan), and a larger model based on the eleventh-generation Civic destined for North America and China. The latter model is sold outside those markets as the Honda ZR-V.

According to Honda, the name "HR-V" stands for "Hi-rider Revolutionary Vehicle", while the name "Vezel" is coined from "bezel", the oblique faces of a cut gem, with the "V" for "vehicle".

Common Honda Hr-v problems

The Honda HR-V is a popular subcompact crossover SUV known for its lively handling, generous cargo space, good fuel economy, and wide range of useful features:

  • Low-quality paint: This is the most common problem reported by Honda HR-V owners. In some instances, owners complained about the paint on the crossover SUV bubbling, while others reported that, after a few years of driving, large sections of paint would flake off the roof. Rust can also corrode the paint and bodywork, requiring repainting of the HR-V, which can cost thousands of dollars depending on the extent of the paint problem.
  • Complications with the accelerator: There are two variations of this problem. The first one is when drivers lightly press on the throttle from a complete stop, and the crossover SUV suddenly leaps forward as if someone slammed on the gas pedal. The second issue occurs when driving at highway speeds, where the HR-V starts to slow down and continues to lose speed, even when applying more throttle. To address either of these accelerator complications, a mechanic must first conduct a diagnostic check to get to the root of the problem. The solution could be as simple as an electric control (ECU) update, which Honda might provide for free. However, at the opposite end of the repair spectrum, a part of the engine bay might need to be replaced, which can cost owners around a few hundred dollars.
  • Loose or dislodged window gaskets: A window gasket is the rubber section at the window frame that forms a tight seal when the windows are rolled up to the top. It keeps rain, wind, and other weather elements out of the vehicle. However, HR-V drivers have complained about the window gaskets becoming loose or getting dislodged. Rectifying this issue typically requires replacing the window gaskets, which consist of four parts. All four cost around $100, along with the cost of labor if completed by a service center.

It is important to note that most HR-V models are not affected by these issues, and they don't necessarily affect all model years. However, they are the most frequently reported problems, so it is essential to be aware of them when considering the purchase of a Honda HR-V.

This is basic safety feature that has been used on most vehicles for last 10 plus years Honda included so it doesn’t seem feasible they would suddenly remove it. This was an oversight and a dangerous one!

    Vehicle year: 2019

Although I experienced some issues with my Honda HRV 2019, I am confident that Honda will address them in a timely and effective manner. I trust in Honda's commitment to customer satisfaction and look forward to a positive resolution.

  2. Giles Feeney 2025-09-23

    Vehicle year: 2022

Nice sport edition! Although the suspension can be a bit noisy and the AC takes 15 minutes to get cold, the car has some great features like the drive line and brakes. The Milano red color is really eye-catching, but it does show a lot of car wash swirls. One thing to note is that the inside of the tailgate isn't painted the same color. Overall, it's a great car!

  3. Gabe Swift 2025-09-16

    Vehicle year: 2017

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Honda HRV. I noticed a grinding noise under moderate acceleration at around 35 mph less than a year after purchasing it. After doing some research on Honda forums and YouTube, I found out that other owners have been experiencing the same issue for at least 2 years. I went to several dealerships to try and get it fixed, but unfortunately, there was no recall from Honda and they claimed there was no fix yet. However, one dealership called me when a bulletin was released and they were able to fix the issue. I'm still disappointed that the other dealerships never contacted me, but I'm glad that the issue was resolved. Thank you for listening to my experience with my Honda HRV.

  4. Erik Klein 2025-09-13

    Vehicle year: 2021

This vehicle does not meet my expectations. It is loud, bumpy, and poorly crafted. The gas pedal vibrates excessively when accelerating, and the hatch is fragile. I do not recommend this vehicle.

  5. Chance Cremin 2025-09-04

    Vehicle year: 2017

At just 31,000 miles, my 2016 car has experienced a major oil leak, shifting roughness, and two radio replacements. Despite having gone through two batteries, the quality of the car has been disappointing. While Honda's customer service has not been the best, I remain confident in my assessment of the car's issues. It is surprising that a car of this age and mileage would have such problems, but I am certain that they can be resolved with the right attention and care.

  1. Brenden Crona 2025-10-02

    Vehicle year: 2016

I ended up choosing this car after considering both the Subaru Crosstrek and Honda CR-V. It's important to note that this is a $19k (starting) car based off of the Fit. While the interior quality is just okay and there's a lot of hard plastic, the car looks nice. The fabric doors on LX/EX trims pick up dirt easily and every panel flexes when pushed. The ergonomics are a bit weird, with low and short armrests that are essentially useless and seat bottoms that are a bit short with no adjustable lumbar. The gas tank being under the front seats limits adjustability and the passenger seat has no height adjustment. However, there is plenty of space for passengers - check out the rear legroom! The gauges are nice and the screen is easy to see in most conditions. The touchscreen HVAC is not my favorite as it's hard to use while driving, but it looks nice and is responsive. I love the lighted vanity mirrors and the ability to slide them to block more of the sun. The A/C and heat are fine, but the A/C may suffer in ECO mode for those in very hot climates. The seat warmers could be a bit hotter, but overall they are fine. The tech is good enough, but Spotify is not supported (only Pandora), so sometimes the song info doesn't show up from my iPhone. The audio quality in general is okay - typical Honda (mediocre). Bluetooth is easy to set up and sound quality is very clear! Everything is easy to use and I experience very few glitches. I love the backup camera and lanewatch is a must have! However, one major issue I have is with the safety ratings - check out the IIHS side impact test. I'm not sure what Honda was doing/thinking there... The NVH is a bit poor in my opinion. The car is very rough over bumps and road imperfections. Noise levels are okay in the city, but on the freeway at high speeds the wind noise is a bit much. Nothing crazy, but Honda could do a little better. This car is AMAZING in the city. It's small, easy to park, maneuverable, gets good MPG, is peppy and handles well. I use it for Home Depot, IKEA, etc.The Honda HR-V is an excellent car for those who need more space. The magic seats are a great feature, allowing me to fit a 55

  2. Jayde Murray 2025-10-01

    Vehicle year: 2018

I'm so glad you bought this car for your daughter! The higher seating position is perfect for her poor eyesight, and it's great to hear that getting in and out of the car is easy for you too. Thank you for sharing your experience!

  3. Cornelius Hammes 2025-09-26

    Vehicle year: 2017

I had a general idea of what I wanted, but I wasn't sure what would fit the bill. While browsing the CR-V, I mentioned to the salesman that it was larger than what I was looking for. He suggested the HR-V, which I had never heard of before. After taking a closer look and test driving it with the salesman, I was impressed by its magic seats, larger size, quieter ride, and excellent features. Although the USB, HDMI, and 12 volt power supply were inconveniently located, I was sold. I took it for a solo ride and then with my wife, testing it on curvy roads and highways. I knew I had to have it before the dealership closed that Saturday. I bought it the following week and have no regrets. Recently, I drove from Arkansas to Maryland and back, and the car performed flawlessly in terms of ride, comfort, mileage, and automatic climate control. I used the Honda Nav app on my iPhone as my GPS, which was a great investment. I am extremely pleased with the HR-V's price, features, and ride quality. I had no issues driving through the mountains in West Virginia or Maryland, and I mostly left it on economy mode for the trip, only turning it off for extra power in the mountains. I now have approximately 16k miles on it, and I've had it for about 54 weeks.I have taken my 2016 HRV EX on several trips, including to northern Illinois, Maryland four times, and Florida once. I am extremely happy with the car and its performance. I will soon be taking it to South Dakota and I am confident it will handle the trip with ease. I have had no problems with the car in the mountains and it cruised at 80 mph on the SD speed limit with no issues. I usually keep it in economy mode and it performs very well. I put approximately 18,800 miles on it in the 14 months that I owned it and had no complaints. I recently traded it in for a 2017 HRV EX-L-Navi-AWD because I wanted an AWD. Even with the upgrade, the car still gets good mileage. The HRV is the perfect size for me, bigger than the Fit but smaller than the CRV. It rides and handles well, and the acceleration is very adequate. I have driven it on mountains in Arkansas, Kentucky, Maryland, West Virginia, and South Dakota and it has performed great. I just returned from a 12-day trip to Arizona with my 2017 HRV and have also taken it to northern Illinois and Maryland. I love the car and find it plenty big and comfortable for two people to travel in. We also have a Honda Cross Tour, which is a very nice car, but we prefer to use the HRV for trips as it has plenty of room for our stuff, plus souvenirs and things we pick up along the way.

If you're considering the HRV, we highly recommend taking it for a test drive. You might just fall in love with it! The engine is built in Japan and is known for its long-term reliability, making it a great investment. If you live in an area with harsh winters, the All Wheel Drive (AWD) option is definitely worth considering. Our 18-year-old Honda with AWD has been incredibly reliable, which is why we chose Honda again. Plus, the HRV gets an impressive 29-30 mpg in city driving. Overall, we think you'll be very happy with the HRV.
