The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 2008 Honda Cr-v problems

The Honda CR-V 2008 is known for its reliability and durability, but like any other vehicle, it has some common problems that owners have reported.

One of the most common problems with the 2008 Honda CR-V is its tendency to consume oil. This issue is related to the deposits on the oil control rings that cause them to stick in their grooves. The warranty coverage for this issue had been extended for 8 years, and many engines were repaired under this warranty. However, if the problem is not covered by the warranty, the repair can be quite expensive. It's a good idea to check the CR-V engine oil level regularly and top up if needed to keep the engine in good shape.

Another common problem with the 2008 Honda CR-V is a failing starter motor, which may cause a no-start issue. The starter motor will need to be replaced or rebuilt, and replacing a starter motor will cost 1.5 hours of labor plus the part. It's also not a very difficult job, and there are many videos available online that can guide you through the process.

The Check Engine light with the code P0497 could be caused by a bad purge valve (solenoid). Replacing the purge valve is easy, and the part is not very expensive. If the transmission fluid is dirty, it's also a good idea to change it.

Growling or groaning noise from the rear end at slow-speed turns can be caused by worn-out fluid in the rear differential. The Honda TSB recommends replacing the rear differential fluid, and burnishing the rear differential clutches.

Loose catalytic converter heat shields can cause rattles coming from under the car. The repair is not expensive.

The CR-V comes with only one engine choice: the 2.4L 4-cylinder i-VTEC, model K24. It's a proven reliable motor, but it's known to consume oil. To keep the engine in good shape, check the engine oil level regularly and top up as needed.

A squeaking noise from the clutch on manual cars means a replacement is needed, and there are also reported issues with the alternator and the rear wiper motor, but these tend to be rarer.

The clutch that controls the air conditioning pump can prove troublesome, so listen for a rattling noise behind the dashboard and check to see if the air coming out of the vents is being properly chilled.

A rumbling sound emanating from under the rear of the car, especially with the steering on full lock, indicates potential differential problems. True, it may just be that the differential oil needs changing, but more expensive mechanical issues are not unknown.

The 2.0-litre petrol engine needs its valve clearances checked and adjusted every 75,000 miles, so carefully inspect the service history to make sure that this has been done on schedule.

The brakes can take a pounding, so make sure that you keep them regularly inspected: especially the discs, which can pit or develop a distinct lip of a few millimetres depth on the edge when worn.

A common complaint is the CR-V’s appetite for tyres; having to replace them after a mere 12,000 miles is not unknown, especially for models riding on larger alloy wheels.

In summary, while the Honda CR-V 2008 is known for its reliability and durability, it has some common problems that owners have reported. These include oil consumption, failing starter motor, bad purge valve, differential problems, clutch issues, and the need for regular maintenance of the engine and brakes. By checking the engine oil level regularly, replacing worn-out parts, and keeping up with regular maintenance, owners can keep their CR-Vs running smoothly and reliably.

  • Summary: Hello I’m [XXX] and own a 2008 Honda CRV that runs fine. VIN [XXX] , but previous owner never went to the recall and I bought the car in 2014 and recently, during a brake job, I first became aware of the problem when my mechanic alerted me to the recall situation and the rusting out that was putting drivers in a very dangerous situation. My car failed the recall because of the rust causing the degradation of the rear suspension trailing arm, and now I'm left with a car not fit to drive? and I would be liable for whatever happens but I was never offered a solution to buy the car back something to help and I cannot be without one to get to Dr’s or buy food live rural I have no choice living alone at [XXX] need a car. So a question, why am I the problem? when, in the first place, the car was dangerous from the manufacturer to the rusting out situation which was actually life threatening, lose steering, the wheel could collapse or the frame itself, and again, never offered any help at all some compensation, nothing? Just drive it home with the burden of the liability etc. I’m on a Fixed income of only $800 a month how am I to survive living rural without a car at my age? Please, I need some help. Why am I being punished when the design itself, as I said, created the dangerous problem and just that's it? Appreciate help from someone. • Summary: On October 9, 2022, I filed a complaint with NHTSA regarding this vehicle due to excessive and extreme rear frame corrosion. On May 6, 2023, my son was driving this vehicle and was involved in an incident while the vehicle was in motion. The rear subframe separated from the vehicle on the driver side. My son lost control of the vehicle. Fortunately, my son was able to avoid a direct collision with oncoming traffic. On May 15, 2023, the vehicle was towed to Victory Honda in Monroe, Michigan. The vehicle was inspected, and we were assigned a case number (#13814983). We were promised a loaner vehicle (which has never been made available). As a result, my son had to resign his position at work because he lost his mode of transportation. I have called American Honda on a weekly basis requesting an update. I've been told our case is almost completed. We have been waiting for more than 4 months for the buyback as promised. We were told we would be getting $7,900 for the CR-V, plus out of pocket costs paid for a rental car on two occasions and payment for recent mechanical improvements. Honda USA has failed to resolve this manner in a reasonable and timely manner. 100+ days is not timely. We have lost income due to the loss of use of this vehicle. We have not been provided the loaner vehicle as promised. Please escalate our complaint. This is the second time this matter is being reported to the NHTSA. Please note, this is more serious now since my son was driving the vehicle when the subframe separated. He could have been killed or badly injured.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-26
  • VIN: 5J6RE48518L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Driver door actuator started jamming late July. Door would only look after pressing the lock button from the passenger side. It eventually stopped locking that way and would only lock after hitting the lock button 8+ times on the driver side. Yes it is available for inspection upon request. My own safety is put at risk due to this issue because my doors are unable to lock. As a young woman, who doesn't have access to a garage and sometimes doesn't get home till late, having doors that are completely unable to lock due to a known system issue from Honda makes me uneasy. Yes, the problem has been confirmed by an independent service center. No the vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, etc... No, the car provided no warning lamps, messages or any other symptoms of the issue. Issues first appeared in late July and have drastically gotten worse since then.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-30
  • VIN: JHLRE48528C
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Approximately six months to one year ago, a screeching sound was audible anytime I would lock or unlock the doors in my 2008 Honda CR-V. I researched the issue and found out that this vehicle has a known problem with its actuators, and that Honda was successfully sued in 2015 resulting in an extension of the warranty on the part. I inherited this vehicle from my grandmother, and I found out from Honda that she did in fact have the part replaced in 2015, yet it has started to fail again, and Honda is refusing to fix it. The problem is that this failure causes the doors to automatically relock themselves after being unlocked. Obviously, this creates a serious safety concern should it become necessary to exit the vehicle in the event of an emergency. I don't believe it should be the owners responsibility to pay to have this part replaced AGAIN after Honda replaced their defective part with an equally defective one.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-13
  • VIN: 5J6RE48548L
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: This year, a 2008 Honda CRV encountered an issue wherein one of the bolts on the rear trailing arm, a crucial component of the vehicle's suspension system, became lodged and partially snapped off within the rear frame of the car. This occurrence had the potential to adversely affect the vehicle's stability and handling. Coinciding with, Honda issued a recall notice for select CRVs this year. The recall was prompted by concerns about the potential development of rust and corrosion within the rear frame of these vehicles. The recall's primary objective was to address potential structural complications, such as rust-related issues with bolts and the rear suspension, which had the potential to compromise the overall safety and integrity of the CRVs. Upon inspecting the affected 2008 Honda CRV, a Honda dealership concluded that the issue involving the lodged and snapped bolt in the rear trailing arm was not directly attributable to the rust and corrosion covered by the recall notice. Consequently, Honda clarified that they could not assume responsibility for this specific problem, and the scope of the recall did not extend to cover the situation of a snapped bolt within the rear frame. In response to the situation and to mitigate potential risks, the Honda dealership proactively implemented measures. They reinforced both sides of the rear trailing arm by securely attaching a sub-bracket to the vehicle's frame. This additional structural support was designed to ensure the proper attachment and functionality of the rear trailing arm. However, since Honda's assessment indicated that the issue of the lodged and snapped bolt was distinct from the rust and corrosion specified in the recall, the vehicle's servicing was only partially addressed, leaving it in an unsafe state. The dealership recommended a nearby body shop sponsored by Honda. This body shop conveyed that the issue should be raised with Honda, as they believed the problems were interconnected.

  • Summary: On 08/09/23 at 1108 hours, I called Langdale Honda in Valdosta, GA. I told them of the current recall on my vehicle. It was verified via VIN, and then I was discouraged from bringing in the vehicle. I was told that the recall applied to northern cars that suffered from salt and snow exposure, and that my vehicle should be OK. It clearly states in the recall notice that mud can also be a factor. I reminded the associate of that. I also reminded the associate of Federal Law. Thereafter, he said that I could bring the vehicle in if I desired; however, I was concerned because I bought my vehicle used. I don't know its history, and don't know from where it originally came. I did not make an appointment with Langdale due to mistrust.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-31
  • VIN: JHLRE485X8C
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: A/C compressor in 2007-2011 Honda CR-V has a known defect in the A/C compressor clutch. The clutch component of the compressor includes the pulley which turns the compressor motor. When the clutch fails, the compressor motor seizes up and stops the pulley from turning. The pulley on the compressor is driven by one serpentine belt on a tensioner which turns the alternator, the power steering motor, the crankshaft, the water pump, and the A/C compressor. When the A/C compressor seizes up, the belt will snap in two every time because the A/C pulley will not turn. The car will not be operable unless the A/C compressor is replaced. To replace the A/C compressor, the refrigerant must be vacuumed out, the condenser and desiccant replaced, the compressor replaced, the system recharged, and a new belt put on. This costs about $2500 at Honda or at another shop around $1700. Honda refused to fix the clutch when I took my car in after discovering the A/C was not working. I have replaced the compressor in this vehicle twice already, and now it needs a third replacement. It is a safety issue because the belt will break while driving causing power steering to go out, possibly causing a crash, the battery will not charge, leaving you stranded, the water pump will not function causing your engine to overheat, and possibly causing a blown head gasket or worse. This situation has occurred twice already but I’m reporting the latest one.

Negative 2008 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Freddie Larkin 2024-11-27

The steering rack of my 2008 Honda CRV needs to be replaced after 5 years and 70,000 miles, which seems premature and costly at $1600. However, I am confident that this is an isolated incident and not indicative of Honda's overall quality. While I have experienced some road noise and an issue with the AC, I still believe that Honda produces reliable and high-quality vehicles. In the future, I will consider all options before making a purchase, but I am not deterred from considering Honda as a potential choice.

  2. Ervin Hudson 2024-11-11

I strongly advise against purchasing a Honda CR-V. The tires require replacement at a mere 31,000 miles, and the ride is excessively noisy on the highway due to a lack of sound insulation. Additionally, the small 4-cylinder engine lacks power. Despite being mostly highway driven, we only average 22 mpg, which is below the expected gas mileage of 25 mpg.

  3. Garett Jacobi 2024-10-10

The CR-V is a great car to drive, especially when the tires have less than 15k miles. However, after that point, road noise can become an issue. This is due to the design of the car, as Honda relies on very soft, low mileage tires to smooth out the harsh suspension. To ensure the best driving experience, it's recommended to avoid using high mileage or fuel efficient tires on this vehicle. While the steering feel may be disconnected from the road, it does react quickly to driver input, making it a fun and responsive car to drive. Lower end models with steel wheels tend to perform a little better. It's worth noting that the AC compressor may need to be replaced at some point. Overall, the CR-V is a reliable and enjoyable car to drive.

  4. Gabe O'Conner 2024-09-24

I have a 2010 Honda CR-V. Despite having to replace the rack and pinion steering five times in less than two years and the rotors four times in eight months since reaching 105,000 miles, I still appreciate the car. However, I am considering selling it due to the recurring issues with these parts.

  5. Kendrick Pacocha 2024-09-12

I understand that power can be a concern for some, but I have found that this car is still able to reach a comfortable speed of 65mph. Although I had to replace some parts after purchasing it used, I have found it to be quite reliable and somewhat comfortable. The AWD feature is only activated when necessary, which can be reassuring. If you are considering purchasing an EX model, I would caution against the cloth seating as the foam tends to flatten out after 40k miles. However, I do appreciate the interior design. The audio system was not to my liking and I ended up replacing it, but overall I have had a positive experience with this car.

Positive 2008 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Mario McCullough 2025-01-05

My CR-V is great except for two issues that have really bugged me. Firstly, the tires are quite noisy. Secondly, there is no auto headlight turn off feature. I find it surprising that such a feature was left out by the manufacturer. Even my least equipped 2004 Vibe had auto headlight turn off. I expected this feature to be included in the top model. The noisy tires have been a problem too. In fact, the noise is so high that some people refuse to ride with me, thinking that the wheels are going to fall off due to bad wheel bearings. However, I had this checked and all the noise is from the tires.

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share a quick story with you. So, my friends and I recently had a bit of an unusual experience. We were driving home from the dealership when we realized that something was wrong with the brakes. After a few attempts to fix it, we ended up having to go back to the dealership three times to get the master cylinder replaced. Thankfully, it's been working perfectly ever since! Just wanted to share that with you. Take care!

  4. Orin Rodriguez 2024-11-03

This car is amazing! You won't believe it, but I've put 100k miles on it and haven't had ONE ISSUE. It's extremely safe and roomy, and has GREAT gas mileage. By far the best car I've ever owned!
