The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 2010 Honda Cr-v problems

The 2010 Honda CR-V has been reported to have several common issues, including problems with the rear trailing arm mount, excessive oil consumption, ignition circuit coupler failure, and air bag troubles.

One of the most common problems with the 2010 Honda CR-V is the rotting rear trailing arm mount. This issue has been reported by multiple owners, and it can lead to suspension problems and expensive repairs.

Another major issue with the 2010 CR-V is excessive oil consumption. This problem has been reported by several drivers, and it is caused by a piston ring that isn't operating as intended. This issue can lead to clicking sounds, difficulty accelerating, and engine overheating. Several drivers have been granted extended warranties to cover potential damages, but even these extended warranties are expiring about now.

Ignition circuit coupler failure is another issue that has been reported in the 2010 Honda CR-V. This problem can lead to engine stall or even engine fires in certain conditions. While this issue was only recalled once and does not seem to have generated any complaints, it is still worth considering when buying a used CR-V.

The air bags are by far the biggest issue in the 2010 Honda CR-V, with several recalls and over 200 complaints. When test driving, it is important to check for any blinking air bag lights or electrical tape being used to cover the air bag light up.

Other common issues with the 2010 Honda CR-V include clutch problems, alternator issues, and rear wiper motor failures. While these issues are less common than the ones mentioned above, they can still lead to expensive repairs and should be considered when buying a used CR-V.

In summary, the 2010 Honda CR-V has several common issues, including problems with the rear trailing arm mount, excessive oil consumption, ignition circuit coupler failure, and air bag troubles. When buying a used CR-V, it is important to test-drive, inspect, and run the VIN to ensure that the vehicle has been properly maintained and is free of any major issues.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
  • VIN: 5J6RE4H58AL
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: American Honda Motor Co., Inc. issued a recall for our 2010 CRV. The recall identified a flaw in the design whereby "corrosion can form in the rear frame due to the accumulation of road de-icing agents mixed with mud and water. As a result, the rear frame can deteriorate, and the rear trailing arm may fall off. A detached rear trailing arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury." (NHSTA Recall Number 23V-228) After the work was performed, we were told by a representative of the dealership’s service department that the vehicle would not pass state motor vehicle safety inspection because of the work they had performed. Over the course of August, 2023 I made more than 20 attempts (15 by email and many more by phone) to reach Honda representatives to ask them to fully repair the car so that it could pass inspection, or to repurchase the vehicle per the terms of the recall notice. Honda declined, stating that "if the brace had not been installed, we would be having a different conversation" (telephone conversation with a supervisor at Honda, August 31, 2023). The work that Honda did to address this safety recall was insufficient because, although the service team at the dealership was able to install a brace on the vehicle's rear frame, the vehicle will not pass state motor vehicle inspection, according to both Honda's dealership mechanic and an assessment by an independent certified mechanic who is familiar with this vehicle. Honda’s original design of certain parts of the frame is responsible for the excessive corrosion of the rear frame which is rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive. Since American Honda Motor Co. was not able to repair the vehicle to a safe operating condition that will continue to pass state inspection, and since the vehicle is otherwise in proper, safe, working condition, the company should have offered to repurchase the vehicle. The recall "fix" is insufficient to ensure driver safety.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-27
  • VIN: 5J6RE3H35AL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Our vehicle started to jerk whenever it is at low gear. The check engine light goes on and off. The traction control light goes on and off. And an error code came up: p060a. The vehicle has stalled 2x after moderately jerking multiple times while driving @ 50m/hr. The air conditioning blows hot air after a few minutes of it running. We have checked recalls for the particular make, model and year and it is showing the classic vehicle recalls from Honda. Unfortunately, our VIN number shows that it was not part of the recalled vehicle. We have gone through Honda hoping that they could at least do a diagnostic run and verify if it is a possible recall issue, but they will only do it if we pay for everything. Please help.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-16
  • VIN: 5J6RE4H39AL
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: Good afternoon, I'll try to keep this as brief as possible; I'm sure you can recontact me if you need additional information. This is not an incident, rather an issue related to the current recall 23V-228 for my 2010 Honda CRV. In 1/2023, the garage advised my Honda would not pass Maine State Safety Inspection due to the severe rust on the frame and where the left rear lower control arm (LCA) attached to the frame. They advised it could detach/break off, and my ability to steer safely to a stop would be affected. I took it to the Honda dealership and they confirmed it was unsafe to drive unless the rust and frame could be repaired. The dealer did not mention this was a common problem or any upcoming recalls for this issue. In 2/2023, I found a body shop that was able to repair the corrosion on the frame and the connection point for the LCA. I paid $1600, and the car passed Maine State Safety Inspection at the same garage that identified the problem. In 5/2023, I received the Honda safety recall referenced above, which states "you may be eligible for reimbursement if you paid for recall repairs out of pocket." I called the 888 # on the recall, received an email from American Honda, and replied to their email with the documents they requested, including the repair invoice. After recontacting American Honda a second time in 8/23, and a third time in 9/23, they advised they did not receive the document in 5/23, and I should resend the repair invoice. I received a call from American Honda on 10/16/2023, during which time they stated I was not eligible for reimbursement. This was due to the fact the repair invoice did not specifically state: “Trailing arm holder kit was replaced”. My case (#XXX) was closed. I read in a Part 574 Safety Recall Report, "Owners who have paid to have these repairs completed at their own expense will be eligible for reimbursement, in accord with the recall reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA." Do I qualify for reimbursement? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 5J6RE3H35AL
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My CRV's door lock has been broken on and off for years now. I assumed it was a problem with the battery in the key or the key itself. I really became a problem a few months ago when the door would not open even with the key inserted into the lock. I would have to use the automatic lock and unlock buttons several times and then insert and turn the key before it would open. I did not know if or when the lock would fail permanently and I would be locked out of my car. This is a safety issue because I could have been stranded outside alone, or worse, stranded on the road with my infant. I understand that Honda settled a class action lawsuit for this known problem. (Kevin Davitt, et al. v. America Honda Motor Co., Inc., et al., Case No. XXX, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.) I never received notice that there was a recall for this door actuator problem or that I was eligible to be a part of the class action. I contacted Honda and they insisted that I get a diagnostic though their dealership. They said I might be eligible for some sort of "good will" refund. I paid for the diagnostic and the repair, which was over $400. The service center at the dealer even said it was a known problem and that I should get something. Honda called me to deny the claim because they said I was out of warranty. They knew I was out of warranty when I contacted them in the first place. I would have gone to a local repair shop if I had known that they were using this as a ruse to get repair costs from me. The problem is that they knew that people were getting locked out of their cars and they didn't tell anyone. They knew that I was potentially part of the class of people who could have gotten relief but they didn't contact me. I don't think that they should leave people stranded out on the road or struggling with their door locks in this day and age when people get robbed or attacked a shopping centers and gas stations. • Components: STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS
  • Summary: Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2007-2011 CR-V vehicles that were sold, or ever registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C., and Wisconsin. An accumulation of road salt may cause the frame to corrode and possibly detach the rear trailing arm.
  • Consequence: A detached rear trailing arm can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dealers will inspect and install a support brace or repair the rear frame, as necessary, free of charge. Depending on the extent of any corrosion damage, Honda may offer to repurchase the vehicle. Owner notification letters were mailed May 22, 2023. Negative 2010 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Olen Lebsack 2024-11-20

I see that you have owned three of the older Honda models (1999-2001) and they required minimal major repairs. Although they were not luxurious, they were solid and dependable vehicles. Recently, you purchased a 2011 Honda for your daughter off lease and a 2010 Honda off lease for yourself. However, it seems that the newer Honda models are not as reliable as the older ones. You have experienced major repairs and minor issues such as catalytic converter, brake repairs, CD players that don't work, and seat heaters not working. It looks like you may need to consider a Subaru or Toyota for your next small SUV. Is there anything else I can help you with?

  2. Winfield Abbott 2024-09-21

I bought this car used at 38k and it was great. I chose this make and model because of its reputation for longevity. I have kept up with this car over the 7 years I’ve had it, doing oil changes every time the car was due. I have a folder full of all my receipts from maintenance done. Recently, the car was driving funny, so I looked at the engine oil level and it was empty! This was only a month after getting an oil change. The dealer is currently doing a high engine oil consumption test. This car is known for a piston ring issue that causes the engine to use more oil than necessary. Honda extended the warranty until 2018, however, that doesn’t help me here in 2021. I am extremely disappointed! My uncle thinks the transmission is messed up, so I’m going to trade the car. I thought Honda was the best, but numerous recalls and huge problems at 110k is unacceptable. No more Hondas.

  3. Stephon Ziemann 2024-05-07

The CRV has been revised since the 2011 model so the rear tire wear problems may have been addressed by now. If not, you may need to plan to spend $500 - $1,500 a year on tires depending on your driving habits. It's worth noting that the rears cup or scallop just as they did on the CIVIC, but HONDA has yet (May 2014) to issue a technical service bulletin to correct the CRV.

  4. Hunter Flatley 2024-03-26

Although I have had my CRV for nearly a year, I am disappointed with the gas mileage and the lack of acceleration. Despite reading other Edmunds reviews, I still believe that this issue needs to be addressed. I have mentioned this to the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. However, I still appreciate this vehicle. As an owner of a 91 Accord coupe, I can confidently say that the 91 model is better made and gets better mileage with 180 Kon. When I purchased the CRV, I expected it to perform just as well, but unfortunately, it falls short on the highway. I am considering trading it in for a different model.

  5. Ramiro Frami 2024-03-03

I recently leased this vehicle and while I am still getting used to some of the features and it is still in the breaking in period, I have to say that I am disappointed with my experience so far. The engine and AC compressor are quite noisy, the pickup is poor, and it can be difficult to accelerate onto the highway. Additionally, the fuel consumption is around 17 mpg and the suspension is quite stiff, which can make bumps uncomfortable for passengers. The interior design feels a bit cheap and the driver seat armrest takes some getting used to. I also had some trouble with the Bluetooth device linked to the nav system, as it does not display incoming call numbers, and the nav system is configured to show roads as US# rather than road names. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend this vehicle, I would suggest taking a test drive of the RAV4 (which comes with either Bluetooth or nav, but not both) or the Subaru Forester (which may not be readily available).

Positive 2010 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Don Cassin 2025-01-07

I own a base model AWD 2010 and it has been a good, reliable car. Currently, it has 127,000 miles on it. The only real trouble I had was at about 115,000 miles when I had to replace the catalytic converter at a cost of $2000. However, I am happy with the service I received from my local Honda dealership's service department. Have a great day!

  2. Einar Hauck 2025-01-01

I made the confident decision to trade my 2010 CR-V last winter when the car required more repairs than I could afford at the time. Despite its terrific performance for 165,000 miles, there was a major problem with the manifold. With credit tight, it made more sense to trade it in and start all over again. I am confident that the new owner is enjoying a well-running car after the necessary repairs.

  3. Jeremy Hoeger 2024-11-23

In March, I traded in my 1996 Accord Ex for a CRV EX - 4WD. I absolutely love Honda's reliability and I fall more in love with my CRV every day. During a recent 2,000 mile round trip to WY, I was completely comfortable every mile of the trip and experienced no road noise. The CRV is so smooth to drive that I enjoy every minute behind the wheel. The only minor issue I have encountered is that it struggles a bit on very steep inclines.

  4. Camden Cassin 2024-11-11

Up to today, I can say that I am absolutely thrilled with my CR-V. It is just perfect for me and my family. I love its peppiness and comfort, and it is an absolute joy to drive! Recently, we took it on a 5-hour road trip and it performed flawlessly. I also adore the glacier blue color. I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and I am looking forward to continuing to enjoy it.

  5. Franz Orn 2024-10-22

I'm so glad to hear that you loved your first car so much that you bought a second one! It's great to hear that you found the interior features, such as the place to put your purse and the second small compartment on the passenger side, so useful. It's understandable that you want to keep this car for as long as possible since the newer models no longer have these features. It's impressive that your car has had minimal repairs and that you were able to complete a 3500 mile driving trip with no problems, especially with 157000 miles on the odometer!
