The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.

Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.

Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.

As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

Common 2014 Honda Cr-v problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2014 Honda CR-V, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Engine Noise: One of the most common issues reported is engine noise, described as a grinding noise or rattle when starting the engine. This problem is attributed to a faulty VTC actuator, which can lead to potential damage to the engine over time. While Honda acknowledges this issue and has issued a technical service bulletin, some owners have experienced catastrophic engine failure due to this problem.
  2. Delayed Acceleration and Shaking: Owners have reported issues with delayed acceleration, shaking, and uncontrolled acceleration, particularly when starting from a complete stop. This safety concern has led to instances where owners have barely avoided accidents. The cause is believed to be related to a malfunction in the CR-V's computer system.
  3. TPM Malfunction: The Tire Pressure Monitoring (TPM) system in the 2014 CR-V has been problematic. Instead of using pressure sensors, the system relies on tire revolutions to detect low tire pressure. However, this method has proven ineffective in practice, leading to inaccurate readings and warnings. Honda has issued a service bulletin to address this issue.
  4. Defective Heater Core: Another reported problem involves a defective heater core, leading to inadequate heating in the vehicle. This issue can affect all vents, including the defroster, and is most commonly observed in the driver's side vent. A clogged heater core can impact visibility and driver comfort, especially in colder months.
  5. Transmission Shuddering: Some owners have experienced transmission shuddering when accelerating at low speeds, typically between 20 and 40 mph. This issue, common in CR-Vs from the 2012-2014 model years, can lead to vibrations, surges, or jerky movements. If not addressed promptly, it may result in transmission degradation and costly repairs.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2014 Honda CR-V highlight various issues ranging from engine reliability to safety concerns and comfort-related issues. Addressing these problems promptly and proactively can help owners avoid significant repair costs and ensure a safer and more reliable driving experience.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: 2HKRM4H70EH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Purchased our 2014 CR-V [XXX], used one owner, 55301 mileage. Very little driving the next three years due to the pandemic. Summer of 2023 we were driving from Buffalo to [XXX] , first 30 miles, severe hesitation, amber lights on, until reaching 70mph. Hesitation stopped but lights stayed on. By August the TPMS indicator, malfunction indicator lamp and other lights came on, again. We reset according to the manual, but this was just the beginning of this process happening over and over again. During dealer testing Code PO 341 came up. Had it tested at another place before taking it to West Herr Honda and was told needed Timing chain replacement with VTC. This was done at a cost of $2232.06 with car mileage of 63159. We were sad and disappointed. Research shows that Honda is very much aware of over 500 plus recorded problems with the 2014 CR-V not to mention unreported problems. The model should be recalled before lives are lost. Car still hesitates but evidently due to a different problem. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
  • VIN: 2HKRM4H77EH
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: For 5th time since about July 2023, my HONDA CR-V 2014 vehicle experienced Sudden unexpeced acceleration" It has about 57,400 miles. It has occurred very sporadically only since about July 2023. Today as I was parking and going extremely slow in lot, I was about to stop though just creeping very slow, pushed on brake and felt a sudden surge forward. I placed transmission in neutral as I was feet away from parked car ahead of me, and engine rived up to about 2500 RPM for maybe 6-8 seconds and then back to normal idle speed of about 1100RPM. As in prior occasions, it has not recurred again but surely will in the furred. I know that nobody has really found a cause to the issue but called dealer (Honda City, Newton, MA) and spoke to service rep. He claimed he had no clue what I was talking about and merely said it has been since 2020 (37,000 miles) since you replaced transmission fluid, as it that has any bearing since suggested change is after 30k-50k miles and already clanged twice. I sent an email to Honda (Case # [XXX]) and waiting to hear back. Obviously the dealer is playing dumb and just wants to do irrelevant unnecessary service or look at error codes (there have been none) at big cost with no results as in other cases. The issue is one that puts others in danger and so far unanswered. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: 5J6RM3H33EL
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The paint is suddenly peeling off the car in large pieces. This is occurring above the rear window. The paint is white and I've found numerous complaints of others experiencing the same issue with the Honda white paint. Honda states they will not cover this as it is no longer under warranty and there are no active recalls on this vehicle. When I asked if this was covered for the 2013 Honda CRV they would not answer but suggested I could 'submit a claim to the NHTSA to have my vehicle added'. This is the first Honda I've ever owned and have never seen this happen. Honda needs to be held responsible for this repair. No car that is garage kept should have the paint peeling off it. Please advise next steps.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-02-22
  • VIN: 5J6RM4H74EL
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: There is a known issue with 2014 Honda CRV torque converters. My car has always had a funky shift which Honda told me it was just the new CVT transmission. Then back in August my mother drive my car and said that was not correct. I took it to Honda and they said it was the torque converter. It is causing my vehicle to become undrivable with out feeling safe. It judders, shakes and doesn't shift properly. I contacted Honda and they acknowledge that it is a known issue with their CVT transmission. They currently have 1200 orders for torque converters on back order that shows you how much of an issue that this is.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-22
  • VIN: 2HKRM4H77EH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 2/21/24 as we were exiting a Hospital Parking Garage and I slowed down to stop at exit where road is, the engine suddenly had an uncontrolled acceleration. Difficult to stop but I pressed hard on brakes (which alone did not stop vehicle)and immediately put gearbox in Neutral, stopping vehicle before it made it on the street. After that, no more incidents on 2/21 or 2/22.. Should be noted I had total of 3 such incidents in past 4-5 months, this was the third. One occurred as getting out a store parking lot, slowing down at street interface and suddenly engine acceleration, used same technique as above. Another was at end of our street coming to a stop at interface to another street, same occurrence. In each of the occurrences I can verify that it was neither a car mat issue (it is anchored in car) not an accidental stepping o accelerator. . Have not contacted dealer or Honda as I note neither has ever found an answer to similar occurrences with others. For now drive carefully and one hand on shift lever most of the time when coming to a stop as occurrences appear to be far apart.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-07-24
  • VIN: 2HKRM4H71EH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: VTC failed July 2018. Honda stated I must pay for the repair costing $662. According to Honda receipt the R5A new VTC was installed. Now it's January 2024 and car VTC failing again. Note: When I changed the valve cover gasket I looked at the VTC and noticed that it says R44. Basically they lied about the repair and put another of the defective VTC. Obviously a much more expensive repair this time due to Honda negligence and dishonesty.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-01
  • VIN: 2HKRM4H53EH
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: For over a year now, my Honda CRV 2014 has been producing a rattling noise from the engine on every cold startup. This happens regardless of the temperature outside. When I initially heard it, it was sporadic, again, on cold startup - so the rattling didn't occur every time. Over time though, it will occur every morning, or after the car has been sittinwith the engine off for at least a few hours. I asked a mechanic to look at it after a few months after I had first heard it, because it continued to happen, even periodically. As it only happened on cold startup, I could not reproduce it for the mechanic - he could not find any obvious issue. After a few more months, I recorded the issue on video (and audio). The same mechanic said it may be the VTC actuator. I had another mechanic look at the same video, and he said it was almost certainly the VTC actuator. He said Honda had recalled the vehicle because of the VTC actuator issue and sent me a link to a webpage with the information. It turns out it was only a technical bulletin rather than a recall. I called a Honda dealership and provided them information about the issue. They asked for my VIN and told me there was no recall after searching my VIN. After some discussion with them, wherein I referenced the technical bulletin and inquired if Honda would provide a replacement for the known issue, the representative said since it wasn't recalled, they could only diagnose and repair at full cost. After I continued to press the issue, she asked if I wanted the telephone number for Honda corporate, so I could send them my complaint. I have no yet taken my car in for repair, as the cost will be very expensive. I don't understand why Honda has not recalled the vehicles over this issue, given the fact that it is an issue they have admitted to, and it apparently is a potentially dangerous and life-threatening issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-28
  • VIN: 5J6RM4H75EL
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Loud grinding noise when starting a cold engine. Honda dealer replicated noise and stated that it was the VTC Actuator-which needed to be replaced along with the Cam Chain for a total of $1,392.23 before the Florida 7% sales tax of $97.46 totaling$1,489.69. Other manufacturing years for Honda received a recall notice. I believe that my 2014 Honda CR-V should be included in that recall so that the dealer may reimburse me for this acknowledged defect in the Honda engine.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-15
  • VIN: 2HKRM4H71EH
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The car makes a very loud grinding sound when starting. A metal on metal sound. This was fixed in October 2021 when vehicle had 77,500 miles for about $800. Dealership stated not covered by any recall or warranty. Service agreement states replaced VTC actuator with VCG set. Now, June 2023, the car is making the exact same noise. Many honda owners are writing about this issue. Honda corporation not taking any ownership for this issue. The "fix" is NOT a fix. Honda is being complacent. Owners are paying for this every 18-24 months. This needs to be addresssed by the company and not having owners pay over and over again to TEMPORARILY fix this issue.

Negative 2014 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Avery Lakin 2024-11-15

If you are considering owning a CRV for an extended period of time, it is important to be aware of some concerns that may arise. While I no longer own this vehicle due to its issues, I can say that regular maintenance alone was not enough to keep it running smoothly. Despite being a Honda, it was not as dependable as I had hoped. Some of the issues I experienced included a TPMS light that frequently came on, a faulty VTC that made grinding noises for 3 seconds on start up in the cold, vibrations in the drivetrain and brakes, and the car's computer needing multiple updates to stop transmission slips and jerks. Additionally, the car was not very comfortable and I needed a special pillow to help my back. Brake rotors needed to be replaced 2-3 times a year along with alignments. While this is not an exhaustive list, it is important to do your own research and not rely solely on reviews. I hope this information is helpful to you.

  2. Isom Waelchi 2024-10-09

Our CRV is a great vehicle, but we have noticed that the fuel mileage is not as advertised. Despite using the eco mode and driving mostly on the interstate, we are only averaging 23.5 mpg. While this was a major factor in our decision to purchase the vehicle, we still appreciate its other features. If fuel economy is your top priority, it may be worth considering other options.

  3. Craig Rau 2024-08-15

We purchased our 2014 Honda CR-V ELX new from Howdy Honda and unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with it. The radio is difficult to hear over the road noise and the brakes have an uneven motion when applied. Additionally, there is a noise that seems to increase and decrease with speed, which we suspect may be due to a belt in one of the tires or a bad wheel bearing. The actuators on the back hatch door are also faulty and will need to be replaced. We have also noticed that the pneumatic tire pressure indicator frequently comes on. While we have found the steering to be a bit too quick for our liking, we do acknowledge that the CR-V and Accord are different vehicles with different driving experiences. We have also considered other makes and models, but ultimately chose the CR-V for its unique features. We have had some difficulty communicating our concerns to Howdy Honda, but after a test drive with a service manager, we were able to identify some of the issues. We understand that technology changes from year to year, but we hope that Honda will continue to stand behind their products and address any flaws. We have had some trouble with the hatch actuators, as the hatch has become locked in the open position twice, but we are confident that Howdy Honda will be able to resolve this issue. We appreciate their efforts to help us and hope to continue our relationship with them. Thank you for your attention to these matters. This CR-V ELX may have 26,000 miles on it, but we have experienced some issues since we purchased it and complained during the first oil change. Unfortunately, there are some blind spots that make it a bit dangerous. The transmission was slipping (they called it juddering), but Honda changed the oil and made a computer update. They assured us that this was a rare occurrence. Additionally, the glove box door hits the knees of an average height individual when opened. My wife and I have decided to move on from the Honda CRV and currently own a Subaru Outback Limited. While we did not have the best experience with the CRV, we still believe that Honda makes good cars. In fact, we have heard great things about the Honda Accord. If we had bought an Accord, we would probably still be driving a Honda. Could you please send me an evaluation form for the 2018 Subaru Outback Limited with the opposed six-cylinder engine? Thank you, Ronald Lee.

  4. Rogelio Mitchell 2024-08-02

I experienced an issue with the differential of my new 2014 CRV after only three weeks of ownership. Despite the AWD light coming on during the test drive, the salesman dismissed it as a non-issue. However, the light has come on three times since then, and after extensive discussions with the dealer, they have agreed to replace the motor on the differential. As a customer who values reliability, I am disappointed by this experience and it has impacted my decision to purchase a CRV in the future.

  5. Geovanni Runolfsdottir 2024-06-16

After driving an Integra for 12 years, switching to an SUV has been quite an adjustment. I've found the back-up camera to be an excellent tool, but it's important to remember that it should not be used exclusively when in reverse - there's still no substitute for looking out the back. I was a bit surprised by the city gas mileage, which is lower than I expected at 16 mpg, even when driving with conserving gas in mind. However, the highway gas mileage is more acceptable at 26 mpg. I purchased this car in the winter and noticed that the heater in the CR-V takes several minutes to get going and provide heat, which can be a bit uncomfortable during short commutes. Overall, I'm still getting used to the SUV, but I'm enjoying the experience so far.

Positive 2014 Honda Cr-v car reviews

  1. Consuelo Bayer 2025-01-03

I hope you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice with the Honda. The roomy interior and fun driving experience are definitely big pluses, and it's great that the gas mileage is so competitive. Plus, you can't go wrong with Honda's reputation for reliability and strong resale value. Congratulations on your purchase!

I've always had great experiences with Honda. My first new car was an Accord, and one of my all-time favorites was a Pilot. It was perfect for my teenage kids and all their activities. When my daughter got her first car, she chose a Civic, which held its value really well. After driving it for seven years and 92,000 miles, we only netted a little over $5000 after the last crash. When my kids left home, I downsized to a CRV, which I'm now selling to buy a new car. These cars are dependable in all types of weather, from Wisconsin winters to California summers. I've always enjoyed driving this car, and I'm confident that my next Honda will be just as great.

Our CRV is a great choice for a small SUV. It has a smooth shifting, is very reliable with no maintenance issues (yet), and gets great gas mileage for an SUV. While driving, you may notice some road noise, but it's not too bad. The 4 cylinder engine may struggle a bit going uphill, but overall it's a great car. We hope you enjoy your CRV as much as we do!

I am very satisfied with my CR-V despite some minor issues. When my VTC actuator started making a grinding noise, I took it in for service and had the service manager contact Honda. They paid for a substantial amount to have a new one installed, and it has been working perfectly ever since. Although the stereo was weak, I had a Kenwood powered subwoofer installed under the driver seat, and now it sounds phenomenal. The interior is very functional and easy to clean, and the rear seats are sturdier than those of the RAV 4. The car looks great, and I get compliments on it all the time, especially after I got some nice black wheels from Tire Rack. The sunroof and tinted windows on the cargo area are also great features. Although I haven't had much use for the AWD in NorCal, the fog lights work great at night. Overall, I am confident in my choice of the CR-V and would highly recommend it.The passenger side window not having auto up/down like the driver's side is a minor issue. However, the AC/heater work exceptionally well, providing ample cooling in summer and warmth in winter. Unlike my previous vehicle, the AC does not seem to affect engine power, and the engine temperature remains constant regardless of the outside temperature. The paint above the rear window started to peel off, but I was able to get it painted black at an auto body shop for a nominal fee. Although the hood paint color is slightly different from the rest of the car, I am confident in saying that I would definitely buy this car again. I hope it lasts forever.

I had some issues with my 2014 Honda CRV after a year of use. The stereo and Bluetooth were not working properly and the dealership was not very helpful in resolving the issue. They even tried to blame my cell phone, which was not the problem. However, I am now much happier with my 2016 CRV, which has no Bluetooth issues and much more comfortable seats. If you are considering the 2014 model, I would recommend investing a little more money in a newer one to avoid inheriting any unresolved issues.
