1999 Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. The model is sometimes called influential, as one of the first to market a true off-road capable family car.

Although the Range Rover had originally been designed as an everyday four wheel drive car that could be used as both a utility vehicle and a family car, it had progressively moved upmarket through its life to evolve into a luxury vehicle sold at a much higher price point. The Discovery was intended to fulfill the role the Range Rover originally was intended for; a segment which was now dominated by Japanese rivals such as the Nissan Patrol, Mitsubishi Pajero and Toyota Land Cruiser. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.

The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.

The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.

The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

Common 1999 Land rover Discovery problems

The Land Rover Discovery 1999 is known for several common problems, which include:

  • Oil Pump Failure: Oil pumps can fail on any engine, but they seem to fail on Rover V8s more often than others. Symptoms of this include the low oil pressure light coming on, particularly at idle. The oil pump gears can crack and, therefore, do not create the required oil pressure to lubricate the bearings, rods, pistons, etc.
  • Worn Camshafts: If your Rover V8 seems down on power from its younger years, it could be that the camshaft lobes are worn down. Replacement and higher-performance camshafts can be used, but replacement labor includes removing the front cover and everything above the valley pan.
  • Cooling System Issues: The Land Rover Discovery 1999's cooling system can develop problems over time. The car's thermostat can fail, leading to overheating issues, and the radiator can leak, leading to coolant loss. The car's heater core can also fail, leading to issues with the car's heating system.
  • Fuel System Issues: The Land Rover Discovery 1999's fuel system can develop problems over time. The car's fuel pump can fail, leading to issues with starting and running. The car's fuel injectors can also fail, leading to issues with fuel delivery and performance.

These are just a few of the common problems that Land Rover Discovery 1999 owners have reported. It is important to note that not all vehicles will experience these issues, and many can be prevented with regular maintenance and care. However, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and factor them into their decision-making process.

What is the most common problem with the Land Rover Discovery?

The 2021 Land Rover Discovery received a reliability score of 72/100 from J.D. Power, and older models have similar ratings. Common problems of the Land Rover Discovery include rear cargo door latch failure, leaking head gaskets, and leaks in the throttle body de-icer.

What is the life expectancy of a 2000 Land Rover Discovery?

What is Land Rover Discovery lifespan? The estimated lifespan of a Land Rover Discovery is 296,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy.

Is Land Rover Discovery reliable?

The Discovery is notorious for being one of the least reliable models in Land Rover's lineup. As such, we can't recommend a model that is almost three decades old, even with good mileage and price. CarComplaints.com have listed 68 complaints and four recalls for the 1995 Discovery.

Are old Land Rovers reliable?

Very early Land Rovers, made during the 1960's through the 1980's, were pretty simple and reliable machines. They were rugged and were capable off-road vehicles on-par with many Jeeps and Toyota FJ40 Land Cruisers.

Negative 1999 Land rover Discovery car reviews

  1. Emil Champlin 2024-09-29

I love Land Rover, but unfortunately, this SUV ended up costing me a lot in maintenance. I had to replace the radiator, gear box, and engine lights, which added up to over $300 per month. Although it might have been a fluke, I'm getting a new one and after talking with other owners, I've learned that they can be expensive to upkeep for parts. However, they are awesome in bad weather, so I'm crossing my fingers for the next one!

  2. Raul Donnelly 2024-09-24

I loved my Discovery at first - it's a joy to drive, looks great, and can go anywhere. However, it requires frequent service and has broken down multiple times, which can be frustrating. Unfortunately, I've had some negative experiences with it, such as being stranded in the middle of a desert and having to fix it myself. Additionally, the paint started peeling and the dealership blamed me, which was disappointing. Just be careful when considering this vehicle.

  3. Mack Robel 2024-09-13

I purchased my Disco from a private seller on Craigslist. It has been quite reliable, but every month, some non-essential features like the window, auto door lock, cruise control, and seat control buttons stop working. Sometimes, the car lowers for no apparent reason. However, after driving through a week of flood rains and a freeze, I am grateful to have this Disco. It drives amazingly well under 70 mph, but over that, it starts vibrating quite a bit. Off-road, it is simply amazing. On the road, in bad weather conditions, while other cars are pulled off on the side of the road, I can cruise right by like it is any other day. It's a love/hate relationship, but at almost 90K miles, I'm impressed.

  4. Keanu Rohan 2024-09-03

Love-Hate relationships can be tricky, especially when it comes to British engineering. I once bought a Certified 99 Land Rover Disco II and had quite an adventure with it! Unfortunately, I encountered a plethora of electrical problems, including having to replace 3 alternators, the steering column, 2 climate control units, and 2 Harmon Kardon main decks. I even had to rewire the whole Disco II and use suppression devices to stop electrical peaks. However, I did learn that the motor, tranny, and drivetrain are bulletproof! It's important to thoroughly research what you're buying and leave nothing to chance. Thank you for reading!

  5. Scotty Rau 2024-08-23

Although these vehicles may have the appearance of a capable luxury off-roader, it is important to note that they may not meet the standards of quality that you would expect. It is worth noting that even the British market has not shown much interest in them. It is important to be aware of the check engine, traction control, ABS, and downhill descent control dash lights, which can be difficult to turn off. Additionally, the 4-wheel drive system is linked to the ABS system and traction control, which can cause issues with the functionality of the 4-wheel drive. The engine design is based on an older Buick model from the 70s, which may require more maintenance than newer models. It is recommended to avoid driving through large water puddles to prevent ignition coil failure. However, it is important to note that these are just some potential issues to be aware of.

Positive 1999 Land rover Discovery car reviews

  1. Christ Dare 2024-11-27

The Disco II has been the best SUV I've driven or owned, including the Jeep, Blazer, Tahoe, and ML 320. It drives great, and although the seat buttons and the cupholders are in bad places, you get used to them. Additionally, the climate control system is awesome.

  2. Morris Bechtelar 2024-10-08

My first experience with Land Rover has been good so far. Throughout my college career, I had always dreamed of owning a Disco II. After college, I got a job and a Disco II. Although it has been in the shop for a few electrical issues (covered by warranty), it's been a great ride. I'm somewhat disappointed in the fuel economy, although I knew it wasn't great. Interestingly, I get better mileage with middle-of-the-run octane, not super.

  3. Reed Runolfsdottir 2024-08-05

I've owned this car for three years and have had almost no problems whatsoever. For an SUV, the ride is fairly good. I still like the styling-- very cool. The only issues I've had are with gas mileage and height-- it can be difficult to get a little person in and out. However, once you climb into the car (literally), the view from up there is fantastic!

  4. Sylvester Cartwright 2024-06-21

I recently traded in my 1996 Discovery for a 1999 Discovery Series II in a stunning burnt orange exterior color. I have always been a huge fan of the Land Rover brand and they continue to impress me with their constant improvements. The differences between my '96 and my new '99 are huge and I am absolutely in love with my new purchase. The interior and exterior styling are so much better and Land Rovers are truly great vehicles. The only downside is the poor gas mileage, but if you can overlook that, I highly recommend getting one. And don't forget to opt for the warranty, just in case something goes wrong - repairs can be quite costly :)

  5. German Marquardt 2024-06-09

Not an overall bad vehicle! Yes, the gas mileage is not very good, but I knew that going in. My wife primarily drove it and liked it also, and my daughter absolutely loved it. It's definitely a head-turner!
