The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants.

The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.

BMW Z1 (E30 based; 1989–1991)

The BMW Z1 is a two-seat roadster developed by BMW and was produced from March 1989 to June 1991. It was based on the E30 3 Series platform. The Z1 featured unusual doors which, instead of opening outward or upward, dropped into the door sills and had body panels which could easily be removed and replaced; the car could be driven with all its body panels removed for weight reduction and increased performance. Only 8,000 examples of the Z1 were produced.

Common Bmw Z4 2004 problems

The BMW Z4, produced between 2003 and 2021, is a luxury vehicle known for its speed and open-top design. However, certain model years have specific issues that potential buyers should be aware of. This article will focus on the 2004 BMW Z4 and its common problems, as it is considered a safe model to buy used.

  • High Pressure Break Sensor: A frequent problem in the 2004 BMW Z4 is the High Pressure Break Sensor, which can trigger three warning lights. This issue can occur at any time and may cost around £90 for the part and approximately £50 for fitting.
  • Window Regulators: The window regulators are another common issue in the 2004 BMW Z4, as they are in other E85 and E46 models. A DIY refurb kit is available for £20, while a new part with fitting may cost around £160.
  • Roof Motor Flooding: Although not as common as the High Pressure Break Sensor and Window Regulators, the roof motor flooding is an issue that affects many Z4 owners, especially those with high mileage. This problem can be avoided with regular cleaning of the roof drains or relocation of the motor, as seen in the 2008 Z4MC.
  • Rear Springs: The rear springs are also considered a common problem in the 2004 BMW Z4, particularly in high-mileage vehicles. However, this issue can be minimized by using non-runflats and maintaining regular cleaning of the roof drains.

While the 2004 BMW Z4 has its share of common problems, it is still considered a reliable vehicle overall. Regular maintenance and care can help mitigate these issues and ensure a smooth driving experience.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-20
  • VIN: 4USBT33544L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The electric steering gets sticky when hot. It feels locked in its position and requires extra force to unstick, once its past the sticking point it over corrects and causes the vehicle to swerve. This failure seems to be quite common and is well known. It seems to be a manufacturing defect inside the electric steering column. I believe it has already been investigated by NHTSA but a recall has not yet been called to protect the consumer. This failure only happens when it is hot or the heater is on in the car, there is no warning before it occurs. Thank you for your attention in this matter. Please help by re-investigating this common failure.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-09
  • VIN: 4USBT33524L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: The the vehicle sits out in the sunlight or its warm outside (usually over 80F) the steering wheel will get very notchy and “stick” towards the center position at highway speeds. This makes minor steering corrections at highway speeds very difficult to make without unintentionally leaving your own lane possibly into another car. This is very much a safety issue! This has happened on multiple occasions since the week after I got it in May 2022. Tonight its only 65 degrees and it was acting up (this is 2 hours after sunset).

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-26
  • VIN: 4USBT33524L
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The Electric Top Malfunctions because of fault design Behind the driver seat is a hydraulic cylinder that sits in a cabin. Water leaks into the cabin causing the hydraulics to go out. The cabin fills up with water, and submerges the pump. This is a major design flaw. It is common with all Z4 models 2003 - 2008. I have a roadster rental business, comprised specifically of the Z4 model. I can give you 4 different vehicles I own as an example. Plus I can quote every seller, that says the top does not work. If people are not aware of this it can lead to accidents, the claw hooks disengaging, unable to get the top up in a lightning storm, rain storm etc., I haven't seen any recalls on the tops. There are no warning lamps on the vehicle that indicate the top motor or its hydraulic cylinder are malfunctioning. Most of these tops quit working in the same year or a couple year after the car was purchased, from manufacturing date. My car, I have reported here, only has 75,000 Original miles.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-09
  • VIN: 4USBT33574L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I own a 2004 BMW Z4 2.5i I bought it used in 2010 with 22,000 miles. It was on a cool December day when I test drove the car and I loved it. No sign of any steering problems. On a warmer day after driving for a while I suddenly experienced a unexpected binding of the steering and almost binding ended up steering into oncoming traffic. This really scared me and I started investigating. Yes, this is a known safety defect, but BMW doesn’t do anything about it. NHTSA, which supposed to protect us from unsafe vehicles, did not do their job either. I am a retired Automotive engineer with Fiat-Iveco and NHTSA made my company recall vehicles for much less. The defect gets worse in hot weather and I don’t let my son, friends or anybody else drive the vehicle, as I am afraid that they could get hurt, aside from a liability issue on my side. I can’t really sell the vehicle with a known safety defect from a moral standpoint and I definitely would be liable should the car get involved in an accident caused by a known defect. BMW and NHTSA do your job before somebody gets hurt or killed! Doing nothing, will cost you more in Settlements and Reputation in a long run…the problem will not go away by doing nothing! Following site lists 137 BMW Z4 owners reporting problems related to steering column: https://www.carproblemzoo.com/bmw/z4/steering-column-problems.php This is a major design and safety defect and justifies a safety recall!

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-30
  • VIN: 4USBT33584L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: Whenever the temperature Is above 80 degrees the steering becomes very stiff with no power assist due to a design defeat within the steering column. The vehicle because very dangerous to drive due to the lack of steering control. This problem effects all BMW Z4s from 2003 to 2006. BMW wants the owners to have the dealer replace the steering column for $6,000. Please assist us in having BMW issue a Recall for a very dangerous situation they created with a defectively designed steering column.

  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING WHEEL OF MY 2005 BMW Z4. IT IS COMPLETELY UNSTABLE. FOR INSTANCE: 1)IT KEEPS PULLING TO THE LEFT, OR TO THE RIGHT. IT REQUIRES CONSTANT ADJUSTMENTS SO THAT I COULD KEEP THE CAR ALIGNED, OR CENTERED. 2)I EXPERIENCE SUDDEN JERKS TO THE LEFT, OR TO THE RIGHT WHEN THE ROAD SURFACE IS SLIGHTINGLY UNEVEN. I CAN NEVER PREDICT WHICH WAY THE CAR PULLS ME. I STRUGGLE A LOT TO KEEP THE STEERING CENTERED WHEN STOPPING AT ANY RED LIGHTS. 3) SOMETIMES, THE STEERING FEELS LIKE IT IS STUCK

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-08-01
  • VIN: 4USBT33544L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I HAVE A 2004 BMW Z4 WHICH I PURCHASED USED IN 2016 WITH 67000 MILES ON IT. OVER THE PAST 2 YEARS, THE STEERING HAS BECOME STICKY AND HARD TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN MY LANE WHEN TRAVELLING STRAIGHT. I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY CORRECT THE STEERING AS THE CAR TRIES TO PULL EITHER TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. ALSO, IT IS HARD TO CORRECT THE PULL, RESULTING IN JERKY DRIVING OR OVERCORRECTION. THE PROBLEM HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING BOTH STRAIGHT AND ON CURVES. IT SEEMS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN IN WARMER WEATHER, BUT HAVE EXPERIENCED A SLIGHT PROBLEM EVEN IN COOLER WEATHER. IT HAS OCCURRED AT BOTH SLOWER SPEEDS AND HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS PROBLEM BEGAN AT APPROXIMATELY 80000 MILES. I HAVE OWNED THE CAR 5 YEARS AND HAVE PUT LESS THAN 20000 MILES ON IT IN THAT TIME PERIOD, SO IT IS NOT DRIVEN EXCESSIVELY OR UNDER HARSH DRIVING CONDITIONS.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-24
  • VIN: 4USBT33564L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WHEN THE TEMPERATURE REACHES APPROXIMATELY 80 DEGREES THE STEERING STARTS TO STICK AND BECOMES JERKY IN ORDER TO STAY IN THE DRIVING LANE. IT GETS INCREASINGLY WORSE AS THE TEMPERATURE RISES TO THE POINT THAT THE CAR BECOMES DIFFICULT TO HANDLE. OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, WHILE IN ROUTE TO MY DESTINATION, IT BECOMES EXHAUSTING TO DRIVE. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO BE ON THE ROAD IN THE SUMMER, WHICH IS THE BEST TIME FOR DRIVING A ROADSTER WITH THE CONVERTIBLE TOP DOWN.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-08
  • VIN: 4USBT33584L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: THE CAR EXPERIENCES STICKY STEERING ALMOST ALL THE TIME NOW. IT IS MOST PRONOUNCED WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE HIGHER. THERE IS DIFFICULTY KEEPING THE CAR IN IT'S OWN LANE. IT HAS NOT RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT, BUT REQUIRES AN INORDINATE AMOUNT THE FOCUS AND CONTROL TO KEEP THE CAR MOVING IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION. THERE IS ONLY 47,000 MILES ON THIS CAR AND I DO NOT THINK SOMETHING LIKE THIS SHOULD BE LEFT UNREPAIRED BY BMW. IT HAS BEEN GETTING WORSE AS TIME GOES ON.

  • Summary: AS I AM DRIVING THIS CAR MY STEERING IS STICKING AND JERKING AS I TURN FROM LEFT TO RIGHT AND BACK AGAIN. IT IS HARD TO TURN AND NOT SMOOTH AS IT USED TO BE. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS AT HIGH SPEED, LOW SPEED AND ON ALL ROAD SURFACES. I CHANGED THE TIRES HOPING THAT WOULD ADDRESS THE PROBLEM, HOWEVER IT DID NOT HELP. IT SHOULD NOT OPERATE THIS WAY AND IT SEEMS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I SEE THAT MANY OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS ONGOING SAFETY PROBLEM, PLEASE ADVISE. *TR

  • VIN: 4USBT33574L
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: THE TRACKING OF THE STEERING STICKS CAR WAS SERVICE LAST FALL FULL INSPECTION. BUSHINGS WERE REPLACED. SHOP FOREMAN COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. THE CAR WAS STORED ALL WINTER CLIMATE-CONTROLLED GARAGE. I TOOK THE CAR OUT YESTERDAY AND THE STICKY-NESS AND CONTROL OF THE CAR ARE DIFFICULT. I DECIDED TO SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND 355 COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME ISSUE. SAW ON SOME THREADS THAT BMW IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. BUT NEVER HAS BEEN ADDRESSED. AS A CONSUMER TAXPAYER AND DOCTOR I AM AMAZED THAT THE NHTSA HAS NOT INVESTIGATED OR ISSUED A RECALL. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. THIS CAR HS LESS THAN 41,000 MILES ON IT. THIS CAUSES THE DRIVER TO CORRECT STEERING CONSTANTLY THE CAR WANTS TO PULL IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS AND VERY DIFFICULT TO CORRECT. THIS EVENT OCCURS WHILE DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT PATH. I HAVE OWNED AT LEAST 15 DIFFERENT AUTOMOBILES DRIVEN COUNTLESS OTHERS AND THIS IS NOT HOW A CAR SHOULD RESPOND. I WAS ASTOUNDED TO SEE ALL THE PREVIOUS COMPLAINTS. WHAT IS GOING TO BE DONE? I PLAN ON CONTACTING THE BMW SERVICE DEPARTMENT THIS WEEK. IN THE MEANTIME I HOPE YOU TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY BEFORE SOMEONE GETS INJURED. MY GUESS IS SOMEONE ALREADY HAS. WHOEVER IS READING THIS PLEASE TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. BELOW I MARKED THE DATE OF YESTERDAY. PLEASE BE REMINDED THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS LAST FALL. AS WELL AS TO 355 OTHER DRIVERS. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-02
  • VIN: 4USBT535X4L
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I HAD THIS CAR BUILT AND I AM THE ONLY OWNER AND DRIVER. I HAVE HAD A PERSONAL MECHANIC TAKE METICULOUS CARE OF IT OVER THE YEARS AND THE CAR IS STORED FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS/YEAR BECAUSE I DO NOT DRIVE IT IN THE SNOW, AND FRANKLY, HARDLY DRIVE IT EVEN WHEN RAINING. HOWEVER, IT NEVER FAILS THAT EACH YEAR SOME WARNING LIGHT GOES ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON. LAST FALL IT WAS THE ABS LIGHT AND THE BRAKE LIGHT. MY MECHANIC PUT THE CAR ON THE COMPUTER, AND FOUND NO ISSUES. NOW AGAIN, THIS SPRING IT STARTED OUT AS NOT BEING ON, BUT WITHIN 5- 25 MINUTES (VARIES EACH TIME WHEN I START THE CAR UP AND DRIVE) THOSE TWO LIGHTS COME ON. EVERY YEAR THERE SEEMS TO BE NEW LIGHTS THAT COME ON FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I HAVEN'T DRIVEN THE CAR MORE THAN A FEW TIMES BEFORE A LIGHT COMES ON. IT'S COST ME SO MUCH IN DIAGNOSTIC TIME. ALSO ANOTHER PROBLEM IS THAT OFTEN THE RADIO DOESN'T TURN ON. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE SCREEN ALSO DOES NOT POP UP. I HAVE TO STOP THE CAR, TURN IT OFF AND THEN RESTART. MOST TIMES THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SEEMS TO 'RESTART' ITSELF SO THAT THE RADIO TURNS ON AND THE SCREEN POPS UP. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN RIGHT. *TR

MULTIPLE MECHANICS HAVE LOOKED AT THIS AND THE FACTORY LUBE USED TO GREASE THE STEERING COLUMN COMPONENTS IS INADEQUATE. HOWEVER, THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN ($4-5K FOR PARTS AND LABOR). THE STEERING COLUMN COULD FAIL AT ANY TIME AND CAUSE THE CAR TO LOSE STEERING CAPABILITIES, VERY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. APPARENTLY BMW IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND HAS RECALLED 2006-2008 MODEL YEARS BUT NOT 2003-2005.

Negative Bmw Z4 2004 car reviews

  1. Felix Powlowski 2024-10-06

I have the v-6. It's a great car for performance and power. However, it does burn a lot of gas. But then again, when you pay over $42,000 for a sports car, you can't complain too much about gas. The car is extremely fun to drive, and I love the automatic top that you don't have to latch yourself.

  2. Olen Jacobs 2024-05-19

I love the look of the car! However, it didn't drive as well as the Z3 and wasn't as roomy as my Audi TT. The Z4 has a lot of power and is fun to drive, but I do wish I had my Z3 back.

  3. Doug Koss 2024-02-08

My Z4 performs exceptionally well, however, it could benefit from some improvements in terms of comfort and noise reduction. Additionally, the trunk space is limited and may not be suitable for larger items such as a golf bag. While the Z4 has an attractive appearance and handles smoothly, it may not be worth the high price tag if these issues are not addressed.

  4. Daryl Stracke 2024-01-17

BMW is a car that requires more maintenance than some other brands. However, with proper care and attention, it can provide a superior driving experience. While I have had some negative experiences with the Santa Monica dealership, I am confident that BMW as a corporation stands behind their products and is committed to customer satisfaction.

Positive Bmw Z4 2004 car reviews

  1. Aron Homenick 2024-10-20

Great job on the performance! The braking, corners, and pickup are all impressive. The ride is comfortable, albeit a bit stiff, but that's to be expected in a roadster. Surprisingly, it gets even better gas mileage than anticipated.

  2. Demetrius Hane 2024-10-20

This car is so much fun to drive! Plus, it gets almost 30 MPG on the road and about 20 MPG in the city. It's also incredibly comfortable - even someone who's six feet tall can sit in it comfortably.

  3. Kareem Abshire 2024-10-13

This car is a joy to drive! While the 2.5 may be a bit sluggish from the line, it more than makes up for it with impressive high-speed power on the highway and in turns. Not to mention, it's a real head-turner! The top works quickly and flawlessly. However, the paint job on this car could use some improvement. Despite its $40k price tag and impressive features, the paint job looks more like that of a $10k car. Unfortunately, it also scratches easily. But with a little extra care and waxing, these imperfections can be covered up.

  4. Uriah Ortiz 2024-10-04

Love it! Although there are some small defects such as the glove compartment and storage bin being difficult to access, and the side door compartments being hard to reach into. On the positive side, there is more trunk space than the Z3 and a glass window in the back instead of plastic. It looks neat with the top down and is still a blast to drive. Love it!

  5. Jaycee Armstrong 2024-08-19

I love my Z4! I've had it since 2007 when it only had 14,000 miles on it. Although it has been more expensive to drive than I expected, I've kept meticulous records of all costs since I bought it. It costs me about sixty-five cents a mile to run it, including gasoline, maintenance, and repairs. The repairs have been the most expensive part, but it's still worth it. The car has run as low as fifty-two cents per mile and is now at ninety-two due to a lot of repairs coming up in the same two-year period. I paid only $24,000 for it in 2007, and now it's worth between six and nine thousand. Not a bad deal, right? I take good care of it, and it has 174,000 miles on it now. I fully expect it to run for another 200,000 miles. All in all, it's been a great car!
