2006 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The Mazda3 (known as the Mazda Axela in Japan (first three generations), a combination of "accelerate" and "excellent") is a compact car manufactured by Mazda. It was first introduced in 2003 as a 2004 model, replacing the Familia/323/Protegé in the C-segment.
The second-generation Mazda3 for the 2009 model year was unveiled in late 2008, with the sedan premiering at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the hatchback at the Bologna Motor Show. For the 2012 model year, Mazda began offering the Mazda3 with their newly developed Skyactiv technology, including a more rigid body, a new direct-injection engine, and a new 6-speed transmission.
The third generation was introduced in mid-2013 as a 2014 model year. The third-generation model is the first Mazda3 to adopt the "Kodo" design language and a more complete Skyactiv range of technologies.
The fourth-generation Mazda3 for the 2019 model year was unveiled in November 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. For the 2019 model, the all-new Mazda3 is equipped with the updated Skyactiv technologies, including a spark-controlled compression ignition engine marketed as the Skyactiv-X.
A performance-oriented version of the Mazda3 was marketed until 2013 as the Mazdaspeed3 in North America, Mazdaspeed Axela in Japan, and the Mazda3 MPS in Europe and Australia.
The Mazda3 became one of Mazda's fastest-selling vehicles, with cumulative sales in January 2019 of over 6 million units.

Common 2006 Mazda Mazda3 problems
The Mazda3, produced from 2004 to 2009, is known for its sporty styling, fun-to-drive nature, and reliable engine. However, some common problems have been reported by owners, including front end and suspension issues, clutch problems, and transmission control module failures.
Front end and suspension problems are common in the Mazda3, particularly with rear shock absorbers leaking, causing a loose and bouncy ride on bumps. Additionally, rust around the rear wheel wells is prevalent, especially in the Salt Belt area.
Clutch problems have been reported in the Mazda3, particularly in the 2010 and 2011 models equipped with a single disc clutch. Owners have experienced clutch failure and slippage, which may require expensive repairs or replacement.
Transmission control module (TCM) failures have also been reported in the Mazda3, causing the transmission to jerk and the "AT" and "Check Engine" lights to illuminate. This issue can be expensive to repair, as the part is costly.
Other issues reported by Mazda3 owners include tire noise due to uneven wear if not rotated regularly, engine vibration caused by a bad top engine mount, and high-mileage engines consuming oil. Regular maintenance, such as checking the oil level, changing transmission fluid, rotating tires, and replacing the drive belt, is essential to ensure the longevity and reliability of the Mazda3.
In summary, while the Mazda3 is generally a reliable and fun-to-drive vehicle, potential buyers should be aware of the common problems, such as front end and suspension issues, clutch problems, and TCM failures. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these issues, ensuring a positive ownership experience.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-01
- VIN: JM1BK12F761
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I STARTED NOTICING A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE INSIDE THE CAR WHENEVER I TURNED ON AC. I THOUGHT IT COULD BE BECAUSE OF SOME LEAK BUT THERE WAS NO LEAK ANYWHERE OUTSIDE THE CAR. I HAVE BEEN USING THE CAR FOR THE COMMUTE JUST WITHIN THE CITY LIMITS. WHEN THE SMELL CONTINUED TO EXIST I TOOK IT TO EARNHARDT MAZDA DEALERSHIP IN SCOTTSDALE AZ WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT IT COULD BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FUEL PUMP AND IT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. BUT TO MAKE SURE I WENT TO FIRESTONE AS WELL WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAS A LEAK AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT. I HAD TO STOP DRIVING THIS CAR FURTHER BECAUSE I WAS TOLD THAT THIS CAN BE DANGEROUS. THIS CAR NEVER WENT THROUGH ANY CRASH AND HAS BEEN MAINTAINED REGULARLY. THE SUMMERS IN AZ ARE REALLY HOT SO I'M NOT SURE IF THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED THE PROBLEM. IS THERE ANY CHANCE THAT MAZDA CAN INVESTIGATE THIS AND PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT FOR THIS COMPONENT?
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-07-15
- VIN: JM1BK12F161
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: CAR CONTINUINGLY SHOWS EVAP DTCS INCLUDING P0443 AND P0446 AS WELL AS EITHER TOO RICH OR TOO LEAN FUEL MIXTURE AND AND O2 SENSOR ISSUE CODE. BOTH O2 SENSORS WERE REPLACE PREVIOUSLY. THE MAIN CONCERN IS DANGEROUS AND HAS ALREADY ALMOST CAUSED SEVERAL ACCIDENTS WHILE THE ISSUE HAS OCCURRED AFTER DRIVING FROM A STOPPED POSITION. THE ISSUE IS, WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPS AT 0 MPH, THE NORMAL IDLING RPM SPEED IS AROUND 750RPM. DURING STOPS LONGER THAN A SECOND, THE CAR WILL LOWER THE IDLE RPMS TO ABOUT 500RPM AND STAY UNTIL THE THROTTLE IS ENGAGED. WHEN THE THROTTLE IS ENGAGED THE VEHICLE HESITATES AND COMES CLOSE TO STALLING. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT POWER THE WHEELS ABOVE ABOUT 1000RPMS WHEN THE THROTTLE IS FULLY DEPRESSED AND THE CAR WILL HESITATE UNTIL THE CAR STARTS TO GRADUALLY MOVE FORWARD. THIS ALL IS HAPPENING IN THE INTERSECTION. AS THE CAR GETS TO THE INTERSECTION, THE CAR STARTS TO PICK UP TO ABOUT 1000 TO 1500RPM AND ONLY THEN WILL THE CAR START TO FULLY DRIVE FORWARD WITHOUT RELATION TO DRIVER'S FORCED DEPRESSION OF THE THROTTLE. BASICALLY THE VEHICLE IS DEFIANTLY NOT GOING ABOVE 1500RPM UNTIL THE VEHICLE IS A CERTAIN WAYS FORWARD. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND I HAVE ALREADY HAD VERY CLOSE CALLS WITH A DODGE DURANGO, A TRACTOR TRAILER, AN UNIDENTIFIED SEDAN, AND A TOYOTA PRIUS (OF ALL THE VEHICLES IN THE WORLD). I WAS ALMOST "T-BONED" BY A PRIUS. THIS ISSUE IS I BELIEVE TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL SYSTEM OR ENGINE AS THIS ISSUE ONLY REALLY OCCURS WHEN IT IS VERY VERY HUMID OR HOT OUT. USUALLY ABOVE 80 DEGREES WITH ANY HUMIDITY AT ALL. COULD BE A VAPORLOCK, ALTHOUGH SOMEWHAT UNUSUAL FOR A FUEL INJECTED VEHICLE, IT ISN'T IMPOSSIBLE.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-27
- VIN: JM1BK324161
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: STARTED VEHICLE AND POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON, NO POWER STEERING AVAILABLE. WENT OUT LESS THAN 2 MINUTES LATER. DROVE TO WORK AND AFTER WORK STARTED VEHICLE. LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN, NO POWER STEERING, AND REMAINED THAT WAY INTERMITTENTLY FOR 45 MINUTE DRIVE HOME, MOSTLY ON. VEHICLE PARKED SINCE.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-04-01
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- VIN: JM1BK32F761
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: APPROACHING A REDLIGHT AT A HIGHWAY INTERSECTION, MY SON PRESSED HIS FOOT DOWN ON ON THE BRAKE AND THE BRAKES FAILED. THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND DID NOT WORK AT ALL AND RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT THAT DESTROYED THE CAR AND INJURED THE OCCUPANTS OF THE CAR HE STRUCK. THE CAR WAS PURCHASED USED. THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD THE BRAKES COMPLETELY REPAIRED WHEN THE SAME THING HAD HAPPENED WHILE BRAKING. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THE SPECIFICS OF THE BRAKE REPAIR UNTIL AFTER THE ACCIDENT WHEN I INQUIRED AS TO WHY HE HAD REPLACED THE BRAKE BOOSTER PRIOR TO MY PURCHASE. INTERNET SEARCHES AFTER THE ACCIDENT SEEMED TO INDICATE THAT THIS HAPPENED WITH SOME FREQUENCY TO OTHERS AND I WANTED TO MAKE SURE I LET SOMEONE KNOW.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-03-04
- VIN: JM1BK323761
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND WENT TO MAKE A TURN AND NO POWER STEERING THE LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS SINCE CUT ON AND OFF AGAIN WORKING. WE REPLACED THE PUMP WITH ANOTHER PUMP JUST THE OTHER DAY AND IT DOES THE SAME THING.. THIS IS NOT VERY SAFE WHEN TURNING IT WOULD KICK ON AND WORK AFTER NOT WORKING RIGHT WHEN YOU WERE TRYING HARD TO TURN AND MAKING YOU LOSE CONTROL.

I love my car! It has great handling and pep, making it feel like a sports car. Even with 90k miles, it has been very reliable and I've only needed to do regular maintenance. While it may not have the best gas mileage (averaging 25-28 mpg with a mix of city/highway), it's worth it for the fun driving experience. The combination of sporty and luxury is perfect. When driving in snow and ice, it's important to be cautious with the acceleration due to the pep, but otherwise, I've had no issues. Overall, I'm very happy with my car!

I'm leaving my original review below (followed by the stars) as I still believe and stand by everything I've written about this car in the past. Now, in 2020 with 101,000 miles on the clock I've changed the upper motor mount and had the rusted exhaust hanger rods replaced and the car has been trouble free as always. I'm a little remiss in saying that I recently committed to buying a Toyota FJ and will be selling the Mazda. Finding a buyer who wants a car with a 5 speed transmission is getting harder these days, but whoever scoops it up is going to get themselves one hellova great used car. The source of the PO171 lean code was found to be one of the plastic EVAP lines that's at the front of the engine. A new replacement couldn't be found, so a judicious application of sealant was applied to the outer sealing edge to prevent air from being ingested and the code hasn't returned in over a year. The engine is still running like new, with no oil consumption or other issues causing a loss of confidence in this fine powerplant. Two years ago I changed all of the cooling hoses and thermostat as a matter of routine maintenance, but to get at the PCV valve the plastic intake manifold needed to be removed since the valve is mounted to the engine block and can't be accessed any other way-I think that's a pretty poor design that came from the Ford camp. ***I'm not quite sure if I would have been as happy with a lower level of trim, but since my concern was having a dedicated onboard GPS system as opposed to an add-on unit I found myself having to purchase my Mazda 3 with the Grand Touring option package. I thought leather seats (heated) were a waste of money until I used them for a while, then I found the material quality and heat feature to be worth the cost. The upgraded Bose audio system is superb, outperforming sound systems in many costlier cars I've been in.The four-cylinder engine performs flawlessly, and although it isn't the most powerful engine on the market, it is adequate for the size of the Mazda 3. I cannot speak to how the 2.3L engine performs when backed by an automatic transmission since my car is equipped with the standard 5-speed manual transmission. My only complaint about the powertrain is that the hydraulic clutch is too soft for my taste. I have owned other manual transmission cars with conventional and cable actuated clutches, and they presented no problems for me. However, after having owned my 3 since new in 2006, I STILL occasionally stall the car when coming off the clutch from a dead stop, making me feel like a newbie (which I certainly am not). Above all, the BEST feature of this car, and another one I thought would be insignificant, are the rain-sensing windshield wipers. I was skeptical when a friend told me that this feature on his BMW seems to think faster than he does, actuating the wipers when a truck splashed him in traffic. But I'll be damned, those wipers really DO come on at high speed just as your brain tells you to hit the switch. Having this feature in an economy classed car is fantastic, and needless to say, I've been spoiled now and want these wipers in every car I own from here on. I've driven 85,000 event-free miles in my Mazda 3 with only oil changes, front struts, and tire replacements in those miles. The front struts needed replacement around 50k along with the lower control arms, which I thought were worn out way too early. Shortly following those repairs, the car needed rear brakes, and I changed the fine wire spark plugs at that time also because I feel weird letting them go to 100,000 miles. Recently, the car needed lower control arms again, and something in the rear of the car is making a clunking noise over bumps that was traced to a worn sway bar mount. The car has been setting a P0171 (lean fuel trim) code randomly, which I haven't been able to track down yet. However, the car drives and performs well otherwise. Overall, it's a solid performer, handling and braking very nicely, and returning great gas mileage when driven on the highway. Like the other Asian cars in my household, I'm dismayed to find the rubber products such as engine mounts and suspension components wearing too quickly. But I guess this is how car companies save money in the long run. If you buy a Mazda 3, you can enjoy ease of parking, a decent hauling capacity, and the Zoom Zoom thrill of driving excitement while keeping your money in your pocket by avoiding expensive repair costs.

This car is absolutely fantastic! It's priced very reasonably and comes with all the bells and whistles you could want in the Grand Touring package, including heated seats, xenon lights, a sunroof, and leather upholstery. The '06 model even has a 5-speed transmission upgrade. The fit and finish are nearly perfect, and the stylish design matches the car's impressive performance. With a 168hp engine, it's fast enough to be exciting without sacrificing safety. The smooth shifting makes driving this car an absolute pleasure!

This car is amazing! It excels in every aspect. I purchased it in October of last year and have put on a lot of miles since then, around 100 miles a month. Since most of my driving is on the freeway, I get an impressive 32mpg. On one tank of gas, I can drive for two days and cover an average of 420 miles. The car handles like a true sports car, hugging the road and rounding corners as if on rails. I even upgraded the tires to Hankook low profiles, which improved both gas mileage and performance. The interior space is exactly what I expected from a compact car, but the design is very well laid out, spacious, and very nice. The sound system is fantastic and can rock the music with no problems. The car also has a large glovebox and trunk, and I love the fold-down seats.
-
I've had a bushel of Mazdas over the years and this is the best hatchback yet. It's so much fun to drive and has never needed more than new tires. With plenty of power and an average of over 30 mpg, it's both spacious and reliable.

We had a frustrating experience with our new Mazda when the engine locked up after only 12000 miles. It took a month to resolve the issue, during which we felt like Mazda didn't want to sell us another car. We discovered that Ford builds the engine for our car, and the problem was a mystery for Mazda. Despite several threats from us, it took a month of experimentation and direction from Mazda engineering for our dealer to fix the issue by replacing the head. However, we were pleased that Mazda provided us with a 100000 mile engine/drive train warranty. If Mazda had prioritized our satisfaction, they could have replaced the engine and returned our car to us much sooner.

I have 4000 miles now on my Mazda. I noticed that the suspension or something creaks really bad and my brakes are very noisy. Also, the A/C is very weak for Texas heat and takes forever to cool. Despite these issues, it is still a fun car. I would appreciate it if all the moans and groans could be checked out.

I purchased my Mazda 3s in April 2006. After about 3 months, I noticed that the brakes were squeaking. Then, around 5 months later, the cd/time/temp display stopped working and I had to have it replaced. It took a while to get the part, but thankfully it was covered under warranty. Additionally, it's worth noting that the car requires a special filter and oil for an oil change, which costs an extra $20. While the car doesn't handle well in snow or heavy rain, I really enjoy the way it drives and looks. Overall, I'm hopeful that it will continue to improve over time.

I bought my new 06 Mazda3 i Touring in late May. With country driving to work, few stop signs and not many lights, I get roughly 28 miles per gallon. The vehicle is fully loaded with an automatic transmission. I find the interior nice and the exterior has a sporty look. When I was in the market, I wanted to purchase the s model which had most of the options I wanted standard along with the 5-speed automatic. However, the 3 i Touring model has a 4-speed, so it doesn't have as good get up nor as good fuel economy. Unfortunately, there were none in the area. The vehicle I bought was fully loaded with the same options I was looking for, but you can tell the difference between the 4-speed and 5-speed transmission.

My vehicle is not performing as expected, only achieving 14-18 miles per gallon instead of the expected 24-36 range. Despite being given the run around and told that there was no issue with my vehicle, I am confident that there is a problem that needs to be addressed.
