1996 Honda Passport problems
The Honda Passport is a line of sport utility vehicles (SUV) from the Japanese automaker Honda. Originally, it was a badge engineered version of the Isuzu Rodeo, a mid-size SUV sold between 1993 and 2002. It was introduced in 1993 for the 1994 model year as Honda's first entry into the growing SUV market of the 1990s in the United States. The first and second generation Passport was manufactured by Subaru Isuzu Automotive in Lafayette, Indiana. Like various other Honda models, it re-used a name from their motorcycle division, the Honda C75 Passport. The other two name candidates were Elsinore and Odyssey, the latter would be re-used a year later on a minivan.
The Passport was a part of a partnership between Isuzu and Honda in the 1990s, which saw an exchange of passenger vehicles from Honda to Isuzu, such as the Isuzu Oasis, and trucks from Isuzu to Honda, such as the Passport and Acura SLX. This arrangement was convenient for both companies, as Isuzu discontinued passenger car production in 1993 after a corporate restructuring, and Honda was in desperate need of an SUV, a segment that was growing in popularity in North America as well as Japan during the 1990s. The partnership ended in 2002 with the discontinuation of the Passport in favor of the Honda-engineered Pilot.
In November 2018, Honda announced that the Passport nameplate would return as a two-row mid-size crossover SUV slotted between the CR-V and Pilot. The third-generation Passport was unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 27, 2018. It is built at Honda's factory in Lincoln, Alabama, and available for the 2019 model year.

Common 1996 Honda Passport problems
The Honda Passport, produced from 1994 to 2002, has been known to have various issues affecting its performance and reliability. One of the most common problems reported by owners of the 1996 Honda Passport is varnish buildup causing hydraulic lash adjusters to stick, resulting in a ticking noise in the engine. This issue is often attributed to the age of the vehicle and can be resolved by cleaning the hydraulic lifter to remove the varnish buildup.
Another common problem among Honda Passport models, including the 1996 version, is transmission failure. This issue is particularly prevalent in the 1998 and 1999 models, with an average repair cost of $4,300 and $4,000, respectively. The rusting frame issue is also a significant concern for Honda Passport owners, affecting models from 1998 to 2002. This problem can cost upwards of $1,000 to repair but may not prevent further rusting elsewhere on the frame.
Electrical problems have also been reported in Honda Passport models, including the 1996 version. These issues can range from the battery indicator moving in sync with the turn signal or showing a drop with other battery pulls to the engine dying when the turn signal is pulled forward. These problems can be caused by various factors, such as a weak battery, a failing alternator, or a bad ground wire.
In summary, the 1996 Honda Passport has several common problems, including varnish buildup causing hydraulic lash adjusters to stick, transmission failure, rusting frame, and electrical issues. These problems can be costly to repair and may affect the overall reliability and performance of the vehicle.

- Summary: THE FRAME ON MY PASSPORT BROKE. COME TO FIND OUT MY FRAME IS ROTTED. I'M HAPPY I WASN'T ON THE INTERSTATE AND GOING A REASONABLE SPEED OR WHO KNOWS WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED TO ME AND MY FAMILY. I SEE NOW THAT THIS IS A COMMON THING WITH THESE PASSPORTS. I FIND IT CRAZY THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE 1998 BUT NOT THE YEARS BEFORE EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE THE SAME ISSUES. HONDA OUTSOURCED THE WORK TO ISUZU TO BE CHEAP AND ENDED UP WITH A DEFECTED PRODUCT. SO HONDA WICH IS A MAJOR CORPORATION GETS REWARDED FOR BEING CHEAP WHILE US NORMAL PEOPLE TRYING TO MAKE ENDS MEET END UP WITH A JUNK CAR THAT'S WORTHLESS. I SEE THESE ON THE ROAD STILL AND I KEEP MY FINGERS CROSSED FOR THE PEOPLE DRIVING THEM. PLEASE MAKE HONDA FIX THIS PROBLEM.

- Summary: THIS VEHICLE IS EXPERIENCING EXTREME FRAME CORROSION OF BOTH THE FORWARD AND REAR FRAME MEMBER. THERE ARE LARGE PERFORATIONS IN MULTIPLE AREAS ALONG THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF THE FRAME, AND I DON'T SEE ANY WAY TO REPAIR OTHER THAN A COMPLETE FRAME REPLACEMENT. WHY IS THE DIVIDING LINE FOR THE RECALL 10V436000 SET AT THE 1998 MODEL YEAR? THIS IS THE SAME BASIC VEHICLE WITH THE SAME ROTTED FRAME AS THOSE INVOLVED IN THE RECALL. I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT THE DOORS SHOULD ROT OF A VEHICLE LONG BEFORE THE FRAME BECOMES AN ISSUE. *TR

- Summary: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 1996 HONDA PASSPORT AND WAS TOLD "YOU CAN'T GO WRONG WITH A HONDA"--DROVE GOOD, BODY GOOD, INTERIOR IMMACULATE, ETC. A MECHANIC LOOKED AT IT FOR RECENT REPAIRS NEEDED ON THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND I WAS SHOWN THE HORRIFIC RUSTED FRAME, HE ACTUALLY PUT HIS HAND THROUGH IT!!! AND NOT JUST IN ONE AREA, THE WHOLE FRAME!! UNBELIEVABLE! I AM A SERVICE TECH THAT DRIVES A VEHICLE, ON AVERAGE, 500 TO 700 MILES A WEEK. FORTUNATELY, I WAS NOT DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 70MPH WHEN THE FRAME COULD HAVE COST ME MY LIFE--OR ANYONE ELSE'S THAT COULD HAVE BEEN IN MY PATH. THIS IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE. I HAVE READ MANY FORUMS SINCE RECEIVING THIS INFORMATION ABOUT MY PASSPORT, AND IT'S OBVIOUS HONDA IS AWARE OF THE FAULTY STEEL THAT WAS USED ON THESE FRAMES. THEY SHOULD COMPENSATE ANYONE STILL DRIVING ONE OF THESE MORBIDLY UNSAFE VEHICLES AND GET THEM OFF THE ROAD! THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED PROBLEM. RECALLS WERE ISSUED ON MANY OTHER MODELS AND MAKES, HOWEVER THEY DID NOT INCLUDE THIS YEAR OR MAKE. UNBELIEVABLE!! A COMPANY THAT USES INFERIOR PRODUCT AND IS MADE AWARE OF IT, SHOULD STEP UP AND TAKE CARE OF IT. AS A BUSINESS OWNER MYSELF, I AM LIVID THAT HONDA DOES NOT FEEL RESPONSIBLE AND WE--CAR OWNERS STUCK WITH THEIR JUNK--HAVE TO TAKE A HUGE LOSS FOR THEIR INCOMPETENTLY. SHAME ON HONDA!!! I WILL NEVER OWN ANOTHER ONE! *TR

- Summary: THIS VEHICLE HAS SERIOUS RUST ISSUES FOR ITS AGE. THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH IN MANY SPOTS WHICH MAKES IT A HAZARD TO DRIVE. IN APRIL OF 2011 THE SHOCK TOWER BROKE FREE OF THE FRAME AND NOW WOBBLES FREE IN THE WHEEL WELL. WE FIRST NOTICED A RUST PROBLEM SOME YEARS BACK WHEN MY BROTHER PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. HE WAS THE SECOND OWNER OF IT AT APPROX. 50K MILES. *TR

- Summary: AFTER EXPERIENCING A SLIGHT VIBRATION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, I REMOVED MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE TO INSPECT BRAKES, BEARINGS, ETC. I IMMEDIATELY DISCOVERED A LARGE RUST HOLE IN MY FRAME RIGHT WHERE IT BENDS UP TO THE HEIGHT OF THE ENGINE MOUNT. FURTHER INSPECTION REVEALED THAT HOLE, AS WELL AS, HOLES ON THE TOP AND BOTTOM IN THE SAME VICINITY. I REPLACED THE TIRE, REMOVED THE PASSPORT FROM SERVICE AND REPLACED IT WITH A RELIABLE VEHICLE. SINCE THEN I HAVE MONITORED THE WEB TO SEE IF ANY OTHERS HAD EXPERIENCED FRAME RUSTING ON HONDA PASSPORTS OR ISUZU RODEOS. THERE WERE MULTITUDES. TODAY I TOOK THE PASSPORT TO A BODY SHOP FOR A PROFESSIONAL INSPECTION OF THE FRAME. THE RESULTS WERE THAT THE TOTAL RIGHT SIDE OF THE FRAME WAS FULL OF RUST HOLES AND THE LEFT SIDE TO A LESSER EXTENT. I AM TRULY FORTUNATE THAT I NOTICED THE PROBLEM BEFORE SERIOUS INJURY TO MYSELF AND FAMILY OR OTHERS OCCURRED. I HAVE ALSO RECENTLY NOTICED THAT HONDA AND ISUZU HAVE ISSUED RECALLS FOR 1998-2002 DUE TO FRAME RUST ISSUES. THE RUST IS NOT LIMITED TO THOSE YEARS AS IS EVIDENT WITH MY VEHICLE. I DO LIVE IN A STATE THAT USES SALT PRODUCTS TO CONTROL WINTER ICE WHICH CERTAINLY ACCELERATED THE RUST CONDITION. MANUFACTURERS HAVE TREATED THEIR FRAMES TO PROTECT FOR MANY DECADES AND BECAUSE OF THAT RECORD, I BLINDLY BELIEVED I RECEIVED THE SAME FROM HONDA; OTHERWISE, I WOULD HAVE PURCHASED THE RUST UNDERCOATING OFFERED AT PURCHASE. *KB

- Summary: WE HAVE A 1996 HONDA PASSPORT THAT WE RECENTLY HELPED OUR DAUGHTER BUY. SHORTLY AFTERWARDS WE FOUND OUT ABOUT THE RECALL ON THESE, AND FOUND THAT OUR MODEL YEAR (1996) WAS NOT INCLUDED. TODAY WE WERE HAVING NEW TIRES PUT ON HER CAR AND OUR MECHANIC CALLED TO LET US KNOW THAT THE FRAME ROT WAS MORE THAN WE INITIALLY THOUGH, SO MUCH SO THAT HE HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT THE CAR NOT BE DRIVEN ANY LONGER AS IT WAS NOT ROAD SAFE. WE HAVE SPOKEN WITH HONDA, AND WERE TOLD TO DIRECT OUR EFFORTS TO THE NHTSA. THIS CAR IS NOW CAN NO LONGER BE DRIVEN SAFELY, AND WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE NHTSA TO HAVE THIS RECALL EXTENDED TO INCLUDE THE 1996 MODEL YEAR. THIS PAST WEEKEND WE RAN INTO ANOTHER 1996 PASSPORT OWNER, AND FOUND THEY HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. NOW WE HAD SOME OF THE FRAME ROT REPAIRED AT A LOCAL WELDING SHOP, BUT DID NOT KNOW THE FULL EXTENT OF THE DAMAGE UNTIL TODAY WHEN OUR MECHANIC CALLED US. THE CAMPAIGN FOR THE CURRENT RECALL FOR THE HONDA PASSPORT/ISUZU RODEO IS 10V436000. *TR

I'm so sorry to hear about the accident that totaled your Passport! It sounds like you really loved that car. It's great to hear that it has been such a reliable and trouble-free vehicle for you. Even after owning other cars like the Accord, Civic, BMW, Dodge Ram, and VW, the Passport has been your absolute favorite. It's impressive that it has been so inexpensive to drive, even with new tires, shocks, and tune-ups. I'm glad to hear that you were relatively unharmed in the accident and that the Passport provided great crash protection. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

At 100K, I have had no major problems. The clutch is still intact, and all other maintenance has been routine. It's a pleasure to drive and cheap to repair.
-
We have thoroughly enjoyed driving our 1995 Passport EX 4x4. The ride has been comfortable with plenty of room, including the rear. Although it can be a little stiff, we have had very little need for repairs other than the usual maintenance. In the city, we have averaged 14 miles per gallon and nearly 19 on the road. This vehicle has plenty of uphill power with its electronic gear shifter. The 4-wheel drive has been superb in the snow, and we have taken it on several long trips without feeling any driver or passenger fatigue. While there is some air noise from the moon roof, it is not bad and can be drowned out by a little low music. We hope to find another quality SUV in the near future.
-
Hey there! I've been driving this SUV for the past two years and I haven't had a single issue with it so far.
-
We bought this new in '95 - 8 years ago. We haven't had to put a penny into this SUV for any repairs whatsoever! It's absolutely the best, most reliable vehicle we've ever owned. We would like something newer now, just because, but we will definitely get a new Passport.

I recently purchased a used passport with 120,000 miles on it. It ran great at first, but then it started experiencing issues with the solenoids and control devices that activate the 4WD. After repairing those, it began to have problems with just about every emission control sensor and device under the hood. I've replaced the A/I/C, M/A/P, T/P/S, and M/A/F, but I'm still having issues with the check engine light and driveability. Despite these challenges, I still find joy in driving it. However, being an Isuzu, it can be difficult to find the right parts as there are Isuzu parts, General Motors parts, and some componentry that I'm not sure about. As a result, the prices for these parts can vary from expensive to outrageous. Overall, I have mixed feelings about my purchase, but I'm still happy to have it.

My husband purchased this truck brand new and loved it. We have had no problems with it and it now has 86,000 miles. All maintenance has been done at the dealer, including timing mechanism change. It's an excellent car for teenagers to drive and it's still going strong after 7 years.

It seems like the car could benefit from a more streamlined design and improved fuel efficiency.
