2017 Mazda Cx-3 problems

mazda logo

The Mazda CX-3 is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured by Mazda. Based on the same platform as the third-generation Mazda2, it was revealed on November 19, 2014 ahead of the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show as a production vehicle for the 2016 model year.

Since mid-2022, the production in Japan was shifted to Mexico and Thailand. Since then, sales of the CX-3 in the Japanese market are served by imported units from Thailand.

Markets

United States

CX-3 sales began in the United States in the end of 2015, as a model for 2016. It replaced the similar Mazda2 subcompact in the market in North America.

Across the model lineup, power is provided by an updated (2018) 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine that develops 146 bhp (109 kW) and 148 lb ft (201 Nm) of torque. It is connected to a six speed automatic transmission that can be paired to an optional all wheel drive system.

In the United States, the entry level CX-3 Sport, Touring and Grand Touring all feature cruise control, power windows/lock, and a 60/40 split folding rear seat. Other highlights include a rearview camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and an infotainment system, Mazda Connect, with a 7-inch display as standard equipment.

For the 2020 model year in the United States, the Touring and Grand Touring trim levels were dropped in order to make room for the Mazda CX-30 leaving only the base Sport trim, with AWD being the only option. Newly standard equipment for the Sport trim include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as the i-Activesense safety suite.

The CX-3 was discontinued in United States for 2022, marking 2021 as the final model year. It was effectively replaced by the Mazda CX-30, which was introduced in 2020.

What is the most common problem with the Mazda CX-3?

Common used Mazda CX-3 Mk1 problems

Many owners have experienced problems with the air-conditioning; dealers have been replacing systems under warranty. Front-wheel-drive cars have a 48-litre fuel tank, while four-wheel-drive models get a 44-litre tank, despite the fact that they're thirstier.

Is A Mazda CX-3 a reliable car?

Similarly, copilotsearch.com indicates that the Mazda CX-3 is a popular and reliable alternative to other common small SUVs like the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR. Overall, though, your mileage may vary in terms of overall reliability with the Mazda CX-3.

How many miles will a 2017 Mazda CX-3 last?

A Mazda vehicle can last a long time. Mazda vehicles are known for lasting over a decade and between 200,000 and 250,000 miles, with some going even longer than that. The key to a long-lasting Mazda vehicle is to keep it running with proper maintenance and regular service.

Why was the CX-3 discontinued?

All it said was it would not offer the CX-3 and Mazda6 for the 2022 model year as “consumer interests continue to evolve.” Ever since Mazda introduced the CX-30 in 2020, we had a feeling that the CX-3's days were numbered. The introduction of the all-new CX-30 practically marked the CX-3 for dead.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-05
  • VIN: JM1DKFC70H0
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The engine on my 2017 CX-3 died while travelling on the interstate at 70mph just before the low fuel light would normally turn on. I pulled to the side of the interstate freaked out at what just happened. I was within a mile of an exit with a gas station and the car started when fuel was added. It's the exact same low pressure fuel pump failure symptom that later CX-3's are being recalled for. I took it to a Mazda dealer and he only recommended that I keep the tank over half full. I've been hoping the recall would be expanded to include my VIN number but there doesn't appear to be enough complaints yet to do this. I've been filling up at 1/4 tank and haven't had an issue again after driving another 40,000+ miles. This model has disappointing range even without this issue.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-04
  • VIN: JM1DKFC77H0
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On November 4, 2022 I was driving in the middle lane of I 87 north of Saratoga Springs. The car stalled and died. I was able to get to the break down lane. After sitting for 5 - 10 minutes, completely frazzled, I tried the ignition and the car started. The gas gauge said I had approximately ¼ tank left. I filled the car up and made it the rest of the way home. This had happened once before on a local road and we had the car towed. The thought was that maybe the car had run out of gas although the gas gauge did not so indicate. When I took the vehicle to the mazda dealer after considerable research, they indicated there were recalls on Denso fuel pump impellers for the model of my car in 2018 and following but not for my 2017 model. The date of that service was 1/17/23. There were no codes still in place that would identify the problem. I am certain that this is the problem. I only drive the car locally now and i keep the gas tank at least ½ full.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-27
  • VIN: JM1DKFB70H0
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving my 2017 Mazda CX-3 on the interstate when car suddenly jerked and failed to accelerate. I was driving 70 mph in the left lane when this happened and immediately started to pull over to the righthand shoulder of the road. The car jerked and slowed again when we were in the right lane. By the time I pulled off, the check engine light was on and the car had completely stalled. I was stuck on a narrow shoulder with a dog and two people in the car. We were lucky we made it to the shoulder at all before the car stalled. There was no indication before the car jerked that there was any problem with the vehicle. The car was towed to the dealership and the cause of the check engine light was identified as a leaking fuel pump/fuel rail. I had to have the fuel pump replaced along with a valve cover gasket.

AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-08
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JM1DKFC73H0
  • Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I put my right signals on and came to a near stop, as I did a right turn into the parking space in front of the dry cleaners. I was slowly creeping into the parking space, and pushing the brakes, as I slowed down to a near stop in the parking spot. All of a sudden, as my right foot was still on the brakes, I felt the car lurch forward, and felt myself pulled back into my seat from the velocity, as the car suddenly accelerated forward out of control! I had NO CONTROL OVER THE CAR! I saw myself speeding towards the drycleaners’ glass window storefront! I came to a stop after I had driven over the sidewalk, over some plants, and crashed into the pillar in front of the dry cleaners, completely pulling it off of its foundation. My car’s engine was still running, and the airbags did NOT deploy. This was a case of Sudden Unintended Acceleration where the airbags did not deploy, resulting is serious property damage, but could have been much worse had the pillar not been there to stop my car from breaching the storefront, and potentially hitting a customer or employee.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-10
  • VIN: JM1DKFC75H0
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THIS IS A FUEL PUMP PROBLEM. P/N PELL - 1335ZA. OTHER NUMBERS ON THE LABEL ARE 16.12.22 AND H00073961. I AM IN POSSESSION OF THE FAULTY PART. WE WERE TRAVELLING AT HIGHWAY SPEED ON ROUTE 1 IN DELAWARE. THE CAR STALLED IN THE MIDDLE LANE AND WE ALMOST MADE IT TO THE SHOULDER. MY HUSBAND, 70, HAD TO PUSH IT THE SHOULDER. IT WOULD NOT RESTART. WE HAD MY 95 YEAR OLD MOTHER IN LAW IN THE CAR. THE TEMPERATURE WAS CLOSE TO 100 DEGREES THAT DAY AND SUNNY. WE WERE VERY CONCERNED FOR HER. WE CALLED 911 AND A STATE TROUPER CAME IN ABOUT 20 MINS. HE TOOK MY HUSBAND TO GET A A FEW GALLONS OF GAS AND THE CAR STARTED. BEFORE THE STALL, WE HAD ENOUGH GAS FOR 39 MILES. WE DID NOT RUN OUT OF GAS. THIS HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE ABOUT SIX MONTHS EARLIER ON A LESS BUSY ROAD AND I WAS ABLE TO RESTART IT SO I DID NOT FRET ABOUT IT THAT TIME AND THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A QUIRKY THING. WE MADE IT HOME WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. WE BROUGHT IT TO THE MECHANIC LOCALLY FOR REPLACEMENT OF THE FUEL PUMP. HE VERIFIED THE PROBLEM WITH HIS DIAGNOSTIC EQUIPMENT. THE CHECK ENGINE CODE FOR THE EVENT WAS P0192. TOTAL COST OF REPAIR WAS $900.00. THERE IS A CURRENT FUEL PUMP RECALL ON MAZDAS BUT IT STARTS WITH THE MODEL YEAR 2018. MINE IS A 2017 BUT THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE THE SAME! THE COMPONENT IS IN MY POSSESSION BUT NO OTHER PARTIES, BESIDES THE MECHANIC, HAVE EXAMINED IT.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-04
  • VIN: JM1DKFC74H0
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I have had this happen multiple times. I try to turn off the car and it will not shut off. It makes noises and beeps, but you can do nothing to turn off the car. This makes the battery die. The first time I freaked out and called Mazda headquarters. They got a tow truck sent to me and my car was taken to Brown's Mazda in Fairfax. They told me the battery was dead and that is why that happened. I have had my battery checked by them numerous times and they say it is A-OK and 100% okay, so how can this be. It happened again and I drove straight to the dealer who told me it wasn't the battery but the starting system. They fixed it and I left and 20 minutes later it happened again. It has now happened again. One day my car is fine and the next it does not start. Then, after trying to start it again today. It went crazy and would not shut off. I was at the dealership recently and another woman had this problem. They told her it was the shifting gear and she had to pay a fair amount. This is ridiculous. This is a Mazda problem not an owner problem. No one seems to know what the real issue is or are afraid to tell. This needs to be looked into. The problem is Mazda owners never know when and where this will happen and it could strand us in bad locations with no recourse. There are no warning lights or messages and it happens at random times. It first started two years ago and has been happening repeatedly. The problem has been relayed to Browns Mazda on several occasions and they tell me it is the battery, but every time I get the battery checked it is perfect. Something is wrong and it is probably due to the electrical starting system which also affects the charging terminals. This is a serious issue and someone needs to take a look into this matter. Please help!

Negative 2017 Mazda Cx-3 car reviews

  1. Gus Crooks 2024-11-08

The CX-3 Touring has received great reviews for its SUV styling, AWD, and affordable price. However, after driving one for 6 months, I found that some of the features and controls were not executed well and caused discomfort. The back seat is quite small and the cargo area is minimal compared to my previous hatchback, a Hyundai Elantra GT hatchback. The GT was far superior to the CX-3 in terms of roominess, interior styling, controls, and storage areas. The CX-3 has limited front storage areas, with cupholders located underneath a squeaky plastic armrest that can be inconvenient while driving. The navigation system graphics are not user-friendly, with road names featured in big white boxes that can be confusing in crowded areas. Unfortunately, the 2016 CX-3 does not include Apple CarPlay software, which is a downside for iPhone users. The accelerator can be jumpy, which may not be ideal for heavy traffic situations. Overall, while the CX-3 has some drawbacks, it still has many great features that make it a worthwhile option to consider. The interior of the car could benefit from higher quality materials, as some of the plastics used are flimsy and noisy. The sunglasses holder in the overhead compartment rattles due to the lack of rubber cushioning, which can be distracting. Additionally, the front door cubbyholes are difficult to access without getting down on the floor. The standard floor mats are made of thin material, which may not be as durable as some drivers would prefer. On certain road surfaces, such as asphalt/gravel combinations, cabin noise levels can increase significantly, making it difficult to enjoy music or hold a conversation. The audio system controls are located under the front armrest, which can be inconvenient. The exhaust sound may be artificially enhanced, which some drivers may find unappealing. The automatic transmission is designed to downshift even on slow accelerations, which may not be to everyone's liking. The windshield washers may need to be adjusted, as they tend to hit low on the windshield and leave streaks. The all-weather rubber floor mat on the driver's side may pop off the guide pins, which could be a safety concern. It is recommended to have this issue addressed by a professional. Neither dealer offered any further action on these items. The dashboard information is conveyed by intense white LEDs creating tiny lettering that is difficult to read while driving. The intensity control for lighting is a strange, raw metal post sticking straight out of the dash that offers only too high or too low light levels. Most important information is displayed by tiny, sometimes incoherent icons that are difficult to read -- dozens of them, and their minuscule size escapes notice if you are not constantly scanning the blacked out icon area. However, these issues are not major problems, and the car is still a great choice. The Hyundai GT had many more convenience features that were all nicely designed and rendered -- for instance, a smooth power roof compared to Mazda's cheap plastic manual slider with a glass panel that rises just an inch and produces too much wind noise. The Elantra GT was a lot more car for the money. Although I sold it after 8 months at a huge loss, I bought a Honda HR-V, which is also a great car.

  2. Kade Emard 2024-11-06

I've been driving my Mazda CX-3 for over three years now and have clocked up around 57,000 miles. When I first bought the car, I was driving around 40 miles a day, all on the highway. I'm happy to report that I haven't had to replace any tires yet, and I only had to replace my brake pads (which weren't even ready for replacement) at around 54,000 miles. That's some great value right there! One thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn't buy the navigation system from the dealership. Instead, you can easily get an SD card off Amazon (for $99) and have a fully equipped navigation system for a fraction of the price. All of Mazda's cars have the built-in programming/setup for the navigation system. The car is small, with a fuel tank of around 10 gallons or so, but there is a reserve gallon, so I'm constantly filling up. I average around 30 mpg (highway and city driving), but only having 9 gallons in the car is pretty tight. On the plus side, every time I fill my tank, it only costs around $25. In regards to the car being so small, the only comfortable seats are the driver and passenger seats. The back seat feels like the 3rd row of a much larger vehicle and is fit for a small child. If you're going on a shopping spree, the trunk barely fits a carry-on suitcase. However, if you lay down the back seats, there's a little bit more room. My Hyundai Elantra or Civic had more trunk/passenger space than this However, I have experienced some issues with this car. After the initial problem was fixed, water started sitting in the door of the trunk, which flooded the license plate lamp and blew it out. Unfortunately, the lamp seems to be glued shut and neither myself nor my body-shop/mechanic were able to replace it. When I mentioned this to my local dealer, they didn't seem to have a solution. There were also some issues with condensation in the headlamps and most recently, engine issues. Although the engine issues are covered under the PowerTrain Warranty, Mazda does not have the time or availability of rental cars to fix the engine in a timely manner. Despite these issues, driving this car is still fun. However, in terms of

  3. Orin Effertz 2024-07-26

On January 27th 2016, I was involved in a car accident while parking my new Mazda CX3. Although it was a scary experience, I am grateful that I was physically okay and that no one else was involved. I immediately contacted Mazda CEC and filed a claim. The car was towed to the dealership where I purchased it and both the dealership and Mazda engineer inspected the car. While they did not find anything wrong with the car, I am still concerned about the sudden acceleration that occurred. I have done a lot of research and spoken to lawyers who are familiar with similar cases. Although it is difficult to prove causation by car malfunction, I believe it is important to take this issue seriously. Mazda CEC has asked me to take the car back and drive it to replicate the incident, but I am hesitant to do so as sudden acceleration can happen for unknown reasons and can be dangerous. I hope we can work together to find a solution that ensures the safety of all drivers.

  4. Ross Carroll 2024-07-21

The car has a limited driver view with lots of blind spots. The headrests cover the seats when down, jutting out and making the ride uncomfortable in the back seat. When up, they block the driver's rear view sight and leave about an 18-inch view space between the headrests. The controls are located in the panel between the seats and the toggle to select can be annoying. While the voice control works fine, it takes too many clicks to get to the radio stations. Additionally, the touch screen is disabled when driving, which can be frustrating.

  5. Nicola Brown 2024-06-19

This car is incredibly comfortable to drive. The driver's seat fits me perfectly and provides excellent lumbar support, allowing me to drive for hours without experiencing any discomfort. It also gets great gas mileage, averaging between 31.5 to 34.5 miles per gallon. Additionally, it has been very reliable over the past 4 years that I have owned it. However, there are a few minor issues that I have encountered. Firstly, I find the middle armrest/cup holder arrangement to be flimsy and inconvenient. Secondly, the Lo-Beam headlight assembly is not up to par, as it does not cast light far enough down the road, making it difficult to see at night. Lastly, I have noticed that bits and pieces of the car have fallen off over time, which is not what I expected from a Mazda. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving this car and appreciate its many positive qualities.

Positive 2017 Mazda Cx-3 car reviews

  1. Rolando Moen 2024-11-20

I've been driving this car for three weeks now and I absolutely love it! I traded it in for my 2011 Mazda 3 Grand Touring Hatchback and I couldn't be happier with my decision. The technology in this car is simply amazing. It has great power for a car in its class and handles beautifully around bends, thanks to the AWD system, paddle shifters, and sport mode. While the cargo space is a bit smaller than I expected, it's not a big deal for me since I usually don't have more than three people in the car. However, I do wish the gas tank was bigger. At only 11.9 gallons, it's quite small for a crossover with an AWD system. It would be great if it had a 14-gallon tank instead. On the bright side, I get an average of 32 MPG, which is fantastic. The only downside is that the heads-up display only shows your speed and cruise control speed. To get navigation directions, you need to add the i-active package, which costs an additional $2,500. Also, surprisingly, there are no power seats. Despite these minor issues, I still think it's a great car!

This car is really enjoyable to drive and is perfect for a single person. The technology is great, although it may take a little practice to master. The sound system is also excellent. While the seats are very comfortable for me, they might be a bit narrow for a larger person. There is no center console, which can be challenging for someone who likes to keep theirs full, but the seats easily fold down to make up for the limited storage space and small trunk. I am happy to exchange this more limited space for a shorter body length and ease of city parking. Overall, I highly recommend this great car. The only minor issue I have found is that you have to lift the armrest to access the drinks holder in the center, but given all the positives of this car, it's a small flaw.

This is a fantastic small SUV! It's super quick and very stylish. While it doesn't have luxury car features, it's a great car for the price. The only downside is that there is quite a bit of road noise on the freeway. During my test drive, I only drove on surface roads at speeds no higher than 25-35 mph, so I didn't experience any road noise. (Lesson learned for the next test drive!)

Hello! I noticed that your factory warranty is about to expire, but don't worry, I'm here to help. I'm glad to hear that you've only had one problem with your CX-3, and that your dealer was able to fix it quickly. While the CX-3 is a lot of fun to drive, I understand that cargo space may be a concern for some. Before you take any test drives, I recommend taking the time to learn about Mazda's suite of Skyactiv technologies. There are some great animated videos available online that can help you make an informed decision. Mazda's engineers are truly the best in the business! Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

I own a 2017 CX-3 Grand Touring. With the exception of an amazingly annoying center armrest that squeaks, the little CUV is amazing. Performance wise, it has more than ample pick up, and borders on too much power for such a small frame. The ride is good, nice and stiff. The interior is nothing less than artwork. The seats are comfortable, and I installed Google Play, as I wanted more than the OEM system could give. The car is small, and you do sacrifice back seat and boot space for the "impossible not to look at" curves. With research, I knew that going into it. I am a single, and carry few passengers. So, that's no concern for me. The back can more than adaquately accommodate one adult, or two small children (human or furry) comfortably. All in all, from my perspective, Mazda is still creating 'zoom-zoom'. I'm not sure what all these other folks have been driving.
