Developed mainly for the North American and Chinese market, the vehicle is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform. Outside the US, Canadian, and Chilean markets, the vehicle is marketed as the Volkswagen Teramont. It is positioned above the long-wheelbase Tiguan and below the smaller but more upmarket Touareg.
Overview
Marketed as the Atlas in North America, Chile, and Israel, the vehicle is known as the Teramont elsewhere, including the rest of the Middle East Africa, as well as in Mexico, Russia, Colombia and China, where production in Ningbo began in 2017. For markets outside China, the Atlas/Teramont is produced in the Chattanooga plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States.
The vehicle features a transverse mounted four-cylinder or Volkswagen's VR6 engine. Up to the introduction of the China-only Viloran, the Atlas was the largest vehicle produced on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-14
- VIN: 1V2GR2CA8KC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The car would state, “Do not exit the car unless it is in park.” “Transmission is in safety mode.” Appointment was made and over July 17th. Part was not in until August 15th. SEAT BELTS,WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-11
- VIN: 1V2UR2CA4KC
- Components: SEAT BELTS,WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The rear driver side seat belt does not stay in place when the seat is lowered, therefore, leaving this seat without a seatbelt. The adaptive cruise control sometimes works and sometimes does not work. There is no specific reason for this. It works during the snow and does not work during the sunshine. When making a hard right or left turn, there is a grinding noise underneath, I am guessing it has something to do withthe wheels or what the wheels are attached to... I have brought each of these items up to the dealership service department and they look at me like I am crazy stating this is the way volkswagon works. I do not believe this is so.
ENGINE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- VIN: 1V2ER2CA9KC
- Components: ENGINE,LANE DEPARTURE

There were no vehicles in front of me or any other obstacles. Other 2019 models have been recalled with he same issue for a harness wiring or software update. This is dangerous and risks my family's life.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07

The approximate failure mileage was 68,000.
ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
- VIN: 1V2RR2CA5KC
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: The car keeps jerking and stalling when in traffic, car line or just driving very slowly. It feels like there is not enough fuel coming to the engine and it shuts off. The message that comes on the screen- Please start engine manually. I have been numerous times to the dealer but they say they can’t help me as there is no code. Obviously the car has issues and I want someone to be responsible for them. It is dangerously to driver it like that. I have kids that I driver to school and I don’t feel safe driving it.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
- VIN: 1V2RR2CA1KC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The vehicle randomly turns off in the middle of the road. The car has been doing this for months and the only Volkswagen in my area doesn’t have time to look at it and it is no longer in warranty. Currently have 76,500 miles and the car has been randomly turning off since we purchased it in December of 2023. This car is a hazard to my entire family and others.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
- VIN: 1V2UR2CA1KC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The engine mount of my 2019 VW Atlas SE failed around April 2024. The specific part (Engine Mounting Right 3QF199262G) has been unavailable since then. There were no warning lights before the failure. My mechanic identified the problem when the engine started moving forward and backward with gear changes. This issue caused the steering wheel to vibrate while driving and made the vehicle harder to control, especially at stops where the vibration became severe. Both my mechanic and I contacted various dealers across multiple states, but none had the part available, with one dealer mentioning a waitlist of around 300 Atlas vehicles needing the same part. Despite initial promises of delivery by mid-August, the part’s arrival has been delayed. We eventually found the part on eBay and ordered it from Latvia, but we are still waiting for it to arrive. The failure of the engine mount presents a significant safety risk to both drivers and passengers, given the critical role the engine plays in the vehicle’s operation.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-15
- VIN: 1V2UR2CA0KC
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I informed the VW service center approximately a year or more ago that it felt like the vehicle's brakes were stopping on their own. The service center claimed that they could not reproduce/detect the issue. Now there is a class action lawsuit regarding the matter yet no recall or safety issue regarding this matter attached to my VIN. There are people who likely do not know about this apparent issue and it is very dangerous to have a vehicle that will suddenly stop on its own. So far, my local service center refused to fix this issue along with two other safety issues. I am concerned that VW knows it is producing unsafe cars yet still puts them out in the market for consumers.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-31
- VIN: 1V2UR2CA0KC
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Since we purchased our vehicle in 2019 the steering wheel will shake when turning the steering wheel. The VW Service Center claimed it was the clockspring and did the repair in early 2020 and the vehicle issue seemed improved with that repair. However, shortly after the same issue began and it has gotten much worse. I am concerned that if it is the clockspring then there can be a sudden serious issue depending on what is happening to the wiring with the clockspring. We have attempted several more times to get this issue fixed, but the VW Service Center claims to not detect the issue and on the last attempt refused to service the vehicle after having it for a week.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-04
- VIN: 1V2UR2CA0KC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: While stopped at a red light awaiting a turn light, my vehicle made clicking noises and turned off. Although the lights and other items remained on, we were unable to restart the vehicle or move it. After the turn light already turned green and someone began to road rage us, the car let us restart it and we were able to drive normally. The vehicle behind us followed us aggressively as they had missed the turn light and were apparently very upset. The car then drove normally. This issue has happened several times.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-08
- VIN: 1V2AP2CA2KC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Today, my atlas gave an error message; air bag error. I called my dealership, who informed me that there is a recall in this. But not for my VIN number. But it’s the same issue. Now, I have to pay out of pocket or chance my air bag not working properly.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
- VIN: 1V2WR2CA9KC
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the steering wheel began to vibrate intensely. The vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the struts. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, who then determined that the tires needed to be replaced. The tires were replaced; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the steering rack and pinion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 100,000.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-19
- VIN: 1V2ER2CA2KC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The car would randomly stall in the middle of intersections after leaving a stop and a message in the dash said I needed to restart manually. Then I have to put the car in park and restart. This has happened over 5 times, the first was 2 years ago and the last 4 on the last four months. We have almost been hit multiple times. If my vehicle acts up in the wrong situation, it could not only cause a major accident affecting me and others in my vehicle, plus unsuspecting people on the road. There were no warning signs or messages prior to the failure. This is very scary and frustrating. Every time it happed we have took it to the dealer and it is always a different thing. Right now , the vehicle is in the dealer since July 19, 2024, and still they have not communicated to me what its happening with the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-24
- VIN: 1V2UR2CA4KC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I work for an Automotive Tool supplier and closely follow ADAS calibration information. I’ve noticed a sharp uptick of posts and comments that ADAS systems calibration equipment produced by Autel and Topdon are often providing incorrect and inaccurate calibration information. The latest comment I saw today was a user calibrated a 2019 VW Atlas using an Autel ADAS calibration stand and the vehicle did not function correctly after the calibration. He discovered the information provided by the tool was drastically incorrect. How are Autel and Topdon still allowed to sell tools that are incorrectly calibrating sensitive safety systems in the US? These tools by Autel and Topdon will cause ADAS systems to function incorrectly in emergency situations.
STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
- VIN: 1V2ER2CA6KC
- Components: STEERING,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The vehicle would start from the remote and upon getting into the vehicle the push start won’t engage with the steering wheel locking and the vehicle being inoperable. The steering will will make locking mechanism sounds and the vehicle won’t start. The vehicle will then not turn on and I am unable to drive. It has sputtered for weeks now yet it turns on and I am able to drive. When first purchasing the vehicle the engine had to be replaced as it backfired and went out the same start stop issue was present then.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-22
- VIN: 1V2WR2CA9KC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The ABS or AES malfunctioned while driving. The brakes were automatically applied, without warning, with a medium amount of traffic and vehicles behind me. This poses a significant safety issue to myself and others when the brakes get applied without warning. A vehicle behind me had to swerve to avoid rear-ending me and others had to go around me on an onramp to the highway. I am taking my vehicle to Volkswagen of Waco today to have this issue looked at. I am also looking into a dashcam to see if I can get the issue on camera in case the dealership isn't able to duplicate the issue. This issue has occurred other times, this has not been an isolated incident. I do get a faulty brake booster light while the vehicle is braking so there is no warning before it happens, just me flying into my steering wheel.

The vehicle is both capable as a minivan and solid and safe like an SUV. While gas mileage may not be a top priority for some, it's not bad with a V6 engine of 3.6 liters. With a soft acceleration, it wouldn't be much different from driving an electric car. The spacious interior is impressive, almost comparable to a suburban, but without the expensive V8. Safety features seem to perform well, as evidenced by tests. I hope to never have to deal with an accident, but the warning and brake assistance have saved me from distractions and blind spots, such as when reversing. The suspension is my only concern, as it can only be managed at a car shop. If it's too soft, it won't handle well on the freeway, and if it's too tight, it will affect city driving comfort. This is why other luxury SUVs have airsoft options, but they can be quite expensive. Hopefully, this will improve in the future. My only regret is not getting the 4 motion, which would provide more stable acceleration and better tire wear, requiring rotation every 5k miles. The front is prone to spinning easily if you're in a rush. If you're on a budget, I would suggest the SE V6 4 motion. However, the fake leather seats are very fragile.

I purchased this vehicle in January 2020 and have had it for 7 months. I absolutely love the smooth ride, spacious interior and tech features. It's wonderful to be able to fit all of my groceries in the trunk space with the third row up. The design of the Atlas is also a plus because it doesn't look like it has so much room. Although the gas mileage isn't great, with prices low, I am able to fill the tank for around $27.00! I can't wait until we can travel again and really enjoy all that this vehicle has to offer. If you're wondering, I highly recommend giving it a test drive. You won't be disappointed.

I traded in my Audi A4 when it became apparent that two car seats made it almost useless. After shopping around and doing some research, I settled on the 2019 SE 4 Motion with tech. The power lift gate was something I really wanted, and it only comes on the tech version. I was originally aiming towards a 2018 base model, but VW convinced me that upgrading in year and trim was worth it. I bought it CPO with 15k miles, which takes the warranty out to 2026. I considered the Telliuride and Highlander, but the Atlas beat them out on total value. This is my first SUV, and I'm very happy with it so far!

Takes pot holes smoothly. Gas mileage while towing is much better than expected.

I completely understand where you're coming from! It's hard to justify spending more money on a 'premium' brand when this SUV has all the features, technology, and quality of one that costs $20k more. Plus, it's big, roomy, and quick. If you happen to come across a better 3 row SUV, please do let me know!

When I was looking for a 3-row crossover/SUV this spring, I briefly considered the new for 2019 VW Atlas. However, early reviews weren't very strong and I didn't want to risk being a guinea pig in testing this new vehicle. Recently, I had the opportunity to rent one for a week in the SE trim and while there were some aspects that didn't impress me, overall it's a decent option for large families on a budget. The V6 engine has plenty of vigor and pulls strongly through the gears, but it does come at a cost at the pump. The exterior styling is handsome and the vehicle is very spacious, with ample cargo space in the rear and bountiful cabin storage up front. While the SE trim may not be the most luxurious, it's still a great option for those who aren't fussy about upscale interiors or gas mileage. Overall, the Atlas is a solid choice for families who need a lot of space without breaking the bank.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with this car that I got 3 months ago. Unfortunately, I've been having some issues with the air conditioning and transmission. I've taken it to the dealership multiple times, but it still hasn't been fixed. I just wanted to give you a heads up so that you can make an informed decision. Thanks for listening!

The torque converter issue that the dealer claims is normal for this vehicle is unacceptable. The grinding noise during low-speed acceleration and rough low gear shifting are clear indications of a problem that needs to be addressed. It is disappointing that VW does not provide adequate support to their customers. If anyone has successfully resolved this issue, please share your experience.

This car is not worth purchasing again. Despite having only 9000 miles on my 2018 Atlas, the brakes began squealing when backing out of the driveway at around 1000 miles. The dealer initially attributed it to cold weather, but later described it as a 'feature' of metallic brakes that 'clean themselves off'. When I contacted VW America, the only solution offered was to 'drive fast on a country road and slam on the brakes'. It is highly recommended that you search for owner reviews online before making a purchase.

CONS: The memory seat automatically recalls the opposite position from the driver's needs, and the electronic dashboard is non-intuitive and poorly organized. The surround camera misses the mark in terms of auto-activation, and the voice-activated functionality is amateurish at best. The owner's manual is completely useless, and the videos are misleading. Sharp edges on the doors can be painful, and the mileage ratings are optimistic at best. The Car-Net app functionality is lacking. PROS: This car is a great size and value for families, with wonderful highway manners and convenient adaptive cruise control. The auto up/down window operations are fabulous, and the panoramic moonroof operation is incredible.
