2004 Suzuki Grand vitara xl-7 problems

The Suzuki XL-7 (styled as XL7 for the second generation) is a mid-size SUV sold by Suzuki from 1998 to 2009, over two generations. Slotted above the Grand Vitara in Suzuki's lineup, the XL-7 offered three-row seating. XL-7 stands for "Xtra Large 7-seater".

First generation (XL-7; 1998)

The first-generation XL-7 was a Suzuki design, had a body-on-frame construction, and was essentially a stretched Grand Vitara. The North American version had a Suzuki-designed 2.5- or 2.7-liter V6 engine, on a rear-wheel drive-based platform with optional four-wheel drive. Beginning in 2003, European versions were also available with a 2.0-liter Peugeot turbodiesel engine producing 109 PS (80 kW).

A unique trait in the US market in this segment was that the XL-7 was available with a five-speed manual transmission, in both five- and seven-seat variants.

When introduced, the XL-7 was the least expensive SUV available with three-row seating in North America. It was awarded the Consumers Digest "Best Buy" award. However, sales slowed as the vehicle aged relative to the competition.

In Thailand, the Grand Vitara XL-7 was Imported by Siam International Corporation Co. Ltd. on 2002.

In Indonesia, the Grand Escudo XL-7 was launched on July 19, 2003, at the 12th Gaikindo Auto Expo.

Common 2004 Suzuki Grand vitara xl-7 problems

The Suzuki Grand Vitara XL7, produced in 2004, has several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the rear door handles, which are prone to breaking. This can make it difficult to open the rear doors, and the only solution is to replace the broken handles.

Another common problem with the XL7 is related to the timing chain. The main cause of timing chain failure is the lack of lubrication, and this issue can lead to a rattling noise coming from the engine. If the tensioners stick due to poor servicing, the timing chain may need to be replaced. Flushing the engine and changing the oil can sometimes fix the problem, but if it persists, a new timing chain may be necessary.

The steering system is another area where the XL7 can have issues. If there is knocking noise coming from the front suspension area, and there is play in the steering wheel, it could be due to faulty roll bar links or problems with the steering linkage. Replacing the roll bar links may solve the issue, but if there is still play in the steering wheel, the steering linkage may need to be replaced as well.

The engine management warning light appearing on the dashboard is often caused by a faulty oxygen sensor. If this part is faulty, there may be a slight increase in fuel consumption. Replacing the oxygen sensor should remove the engine warning light from the dashboard.

Finally, the braking system is an area where the XL7 can have issues, especially if the vehicle is used for hauling heavy loads or carrying a full complement of passengers. The front disc pads tend to wear out more quickly in these situations, and they may need to be replaced more frequently than in vehicles that are not used for heavy hauling. It is important to be gentle with the brake pedal and to follow the recommended maintenance schedule to extend the life of the braking system components.

In summary, the Suzuki Grand Vitara XL7 has several common problems that owners have reported. These include issues with the rear door handles, timing chain, steering system, oxygen sensor, and braking system. By being aware of these potential issues and following the recommended maintenance schedule, XL7 owners can help ensure that their vehicles remain reliable and safe to drive.

What is the common problem with Suzuki Grand Vitara?

The Grand-Vitara has a known issue with its water pumps, which are prone to seizing up. Those pumps run off the timing belt, so seizure leads to a timing belt slip which is causing the engine to stall. In most cases, you will need to order both a new water pump and a new timing belt from BreakerYard.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-30
  • VIN: JS3TY92V344
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL HAS EMBEDDED LED LIGHTS, NO REPLACEABLE BULBS...FORCES ENTIRE CLUSTER REPLACEMENT FROM UNSALVAGEABLE OR USED/SALVAGED VEHICLES WITH NO GUARANTEE OF TRUE INTERNAL CONDITION TEMPORARILY OR LONG-TERM, LEADING TO MANY SAFETY & DYSFUNCTION ISSUES, INCLUDING "RIGGED" COMPONENTS SUCH AS FALSE MILEAGE, ETC. MY XL7 ODOMETER/TRIP METER BLACKED OUT AT 130K MILES, SHOULD LAST LIFETIME OF VEHICLE. SUZUKI NO LONGER MANUFACTURING THE CLUSTERS, TOO COST-PROHIBITIVE FOR OWNERS IF THEY WERE STILL MAKING THEM. MANY, MANY OWNERS ON FORUMS & ONLINE SITES COMPLAINING OF THIS ISSUE AND SEEKING HELP OR PARTS FROM OTHERS. I'VE PERSONALLY READ HUNDREDS. SUZUKI NEEDS TO REMEDY THIS ISSUE IMMEDIATELY SO OWNERS CAN BE SAFE DRIVING & ASSURED OF NO DYSFUNCTION, AND PROTECTED FROM FURTHER DAMAGE RELATED TO MILEAGE TAMPERING, INCLUDING HIDDEN AND EXCESSIVELY AGED ENGINE/PARTS.

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-08-09
  • VIN: JS3TX92V644
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE FROM ORIGINAL OWNER. AFTER NOTICING SOME ISSUES & LOOKING BACK OVER CARFAX, REPAIR REPORT, & RECALLS ONLINE, I CALLED SUZUKI. GAVE THE VIN# AND WAS TOLD A RECALL WAS DONE IN 2004 BY DEALER. WHEN ASKED ABOUT THE OTHER RECALLS, SHE SAID THERE WAS NO OTHER RECALLS. ALL PAPERWORK I HAVE HAS NO INDICATIONS OF THE RECALL BEING DONE. I SEE 3 RECALLS ON THIS SITE AS WELL. WHAT SHOULD I DO OR WHO SHOULD I CONTACT?

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-03-18
  • VIN: JS3TY92V244
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: RECALL 03V51200 AFFECTED PART OF THE 2004 XL7 BUT NOT THOSE PRODUCED AFTER 6/13/2003. THE LATTER VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE ACCELERATER CABLE STICKING. ON MARCH 18, 2017 MY WIFE'S CABLE GOT STUCK AND HER VEHICLE ALMOST REAR ENDED A DIESEL TRUCK ON HIGHWAY 99 SOUTH IN SACRAMENTO, CA. IF SHE HADN'T PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL SHE WOULDN'T HAVE STOPPED SO I LOOKED RECALL NOTICES AND FOUND THE ABOVE STATED RECALL. JUST TO FIND OUT THAT HER VEHICLE SUFFERED FROM THE SAME AFFLICTION AS THE VEHICLES THAT WERE RECALLED BUT WASNT INCLUDED. THIS IS SO DANGEROUS AND I FEEL ALL THE VEHICLES FROM 2004 SHOULD BE FIXED

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-01
  • VIN: JS3TY92V844
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: ONE DAY, I STARTED MY CAR, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE CLOCK/TEMP WAS FLASHING, IT HASN'T GONE AWAY. I AM UNABLE TO FIX THE CLOCK, AND WHEN I WENT TO THE MECHANIC TO FIX THE AIRBAG PROBLEM, HE CALLED OUR LOCAL SUZUKI DEALERSHIP AND HE WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN KNOWN FOR YEARS, AND WOULD COST ME OVER $3500 JUST FOR THE PARTS. I'VE SEEN OTHER SITES WHERE PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. ON ONE FORUM I SAW THAT SOME SUZUKI DEALERSHIPS WERE OFFERING TO RESET THE SENSOR MODULE FOR FREE, BUT I WASN'T OFFERED THAT HERE (HAWAII). I SPENT MOST OF MY DAY TRYING TO SEE IF THERE WERE RECALLS, BUT COULD NOT FIND ANY. AT THIS POINT, BEING THAT THE CAR IS ALREADY 12 YEARS OLD, HAVING TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WILL COST MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. I AM UNABLE TO GET A SAFETY CHECK, AND AM UNABLE TO DRIVE IT ANYWHERE NOW. I FEEL THAT SUZUKI SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST SEEING THAT THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH OTHER OWNERS.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-05-05
  • VIN: JS3TX92V044
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: GOING ON A SMALL TRIP, AND MY PASSENGER, A RATHER LARGE MAN, SAT IN PASS FRONT SEAT, AND THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON THE DASHBOARD, AND THE CLOCK STARTED FLASHING. BROUGHT TO BRAINTREE TOYOTA, NEAREST DEALERSHIP THAT WORKED ON SUZUKIS, AND THEY WERE ABLE TO RECALIBRATE UNDER PASS SEAT, RESET, AND ALL WORKED UNTIL A FEW MONTHS LATER, WHEN THE SAME MAN SAT IN THE PASS SEAT, AND AGAIN, THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CLOCK FLASHED, AND HAS BEEN EVER SINCE. I HAVE BEEN LIVING WITH THIS PROBLEM NOW FOR ABOUT 3-4 YEARS AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PARTS TO REPLACE WOULD BE SENSORS AT A COST OF ABOUT 1500.00 TO ME, AT MASTRIA SUZUKI. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-01-19
  • VIN: JS3TX92V244
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THIS PROBLEM WAS FIRST NOTICED AT APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES IN 2009 BUT DISAPPEARED THEN RETURNED IN 2013. THE CLOCK/TEMP WOULD FLASH AND THE PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT WOULD STAY ON. AT TIMES WE WERE ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE, TURN IT OFF, THEN RESTART AND ATTACH THE PASSENGER SEATBELT ONLY AFTER THE INITIAL PASSENGER SEATBELT LIGHT CAME ON AND THE FLASHING WOULD STOP. HOWEVER THE INCIDENTS HAVE BECOME MORE FREQUENT AND NOW THE CLOCK/TEMP CONTINUES TO FLASH, THE PASSENGER SEATBELT LIGHT STAYS ON AND NOTHING CAN BE DONE TO TURN IT OFF. CALLED THE DEALER WHO SAYS THE FRONT SEAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE NO CODES WHEN CONNECTED TO THE DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER. AFTER TALKING TO OTHER SUZUKI OWNERS WE FOUND THIS HAS BEEN A COMMON PROBLEM AND APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN MANUFACTURE YET THERE HAVE BEEN NO RECALLS. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-04
  • VIN: JS3TX92V344
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE AIR BAG DASH LITE CAME ON, WHEN TAKEN IN FOR REPAIR THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE SEEN SEVERAL LIKE THIS AND THAT IT WAS A DEFECTIVE PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR, THE FIX IS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SEAT? IF THIS IS HAPPENING TO SEVERAL PEOPLE WHY NOT A RECALL? THE COST T REPLACE THE SEAT OVER $2000. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-08
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: AFTER A SNOW STORM WE GOT INTO OUR VEHICLE AND STARTED IT TO WARM IT UP. THE AIRBAG LIGHT WOULDN'T GO OFF AND THE DISPLAY ON THE STEREO FLASHED CONTINUOUSLY. FROM THIS POINT ON, THESE DISPLAYS CONTINUE TO STAY ON AT ALL TIMES. AFTER CHECKING WITH THE DEAL AND SUZUKI, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAG SENSOR IS BROKEN. IT CAN HAPPEN FROM SITTING THINGS ON THE SEAT OTHER THAN A PERSON, A HEAVY PERSON ON THE SEAT, NORMAL EVERY DAY USE, AND FINALLY THE COLD. I'M TOLD THE CONSEQUENCE OF THIS IS THAT THE PASSENGER AIR BAG IS OFF AND WILL REMAIN OFF FROM THAT POINT ON. THE ONLY FIX IS TO REPLACE THE SEAT WITH THE SENSOR WHICH CAN RANGE BETWEEN $2000 AND $1000 DEPENDING ON THE DEALER YOU TALK TOO. THERE IS NO EXPLANATION OF THE RADIO DISPLAY FLASHING OTHER THAN SOMEHOW THE ELECTRONICS ARE LINKED TOGETHER. I BELIEVE A RECALL SHOULD BE IN PLACE TO FIX THIS FAULTY SENSOR WITH AN EXTREMELY HIGH COST TO AN AVERAGE USER TO REPLACE AS IT RENDERS THE AIRBAG USELESS FOR THE PASSENGER OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS NO COST EFFECTIVE WAY FOR THE CONSUMER TO FIX IT, IT REDUCES THE SAFETY OF THE PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE. I'VE READ MANY COMPLAINTS IN FORUMS ACROSS THE NET WITH THIS EXACT PROBLEM. IT REQUIRES ALSO THAT A LICENSED PROFESSIONAL BE USED TO FIX THE ISSUE WHICH INCREASES THE COST SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE CONSUMER. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-02

  • Summary: OUR 2004 SUZUKI XL7 HAS RUN WONDERFULLY WITH FULL MAINTENANCE SINCE IT WAS NEW. HOWEVER JUST THIS LAST MONTH OUT OF NO WHERE FOR NO REASON THE AIRBAG LIGHT ON THE DASH DISPLAY CAME ON AND HAS BEEN ON SINCE. THE CLOCK FLASHES AND CAN NOT BE SET IT JUST FLASHES. THE CODES APPEAR TO SAY WE NEED TO PAY 2000 OR MORE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE SEAT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT IN THE SENSOR FOR THE AIRBAG, WHICH SUZUKI DOESN'T FEEL THEY SHOULD REPLACE. WE'VE CONTACTED THEM AND WERE TOLD IT WAS NOT A DEFECT IT HAPPENED AFTER WARRANTY. *TR

AFTER DISCUSSION WITH SEVERAL OTHER SUZUKI OWNERS WE FEEL THAT THIS IS A CONSTANT PROBLEM WITH THE SUZUKI AND SHOULD BE RESOLVED BY THE MANUFACTURER. • Summary: WE GOT INTO OUR CAR AT THE AIRPORT AFTER A FRIEND DROVE MY CAR OVER & PICKED US UP. THE CAR WAS RUNNING WHEN WE GOT IN. AS SOON AS MY HUSBAND SAT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THE CLOCK STARTED FLASHING & AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON & STAYED ON WHILE DRIVING. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP, THEY WANT TO CHARGE $110 TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE & APPROX. $2000 TO REPLACE THE PASSENGER SEAT IF DIAGNOSIS SHOWS THE SEAT MALFUNCTIONED. THEY TOLD ME IT IS SAFE TO DRIVE BUT THE AIRBAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY IN A CRASH. THIS DOES NOT SOUND SAFE! SUZUKI SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM FREE OF CHARGE SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPENING ON THIS YEAR & MODEL OF SUZUKI. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, IT IS NOT A COSMETIC PROBLEM WITH THE TRUCK. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-11-29
  • VIN: JS3TY92V844
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: ON A 2004 SUZUKI XL7 HAVING 58,000 MILES THE CLOCK/TEMP DISPLAY IS FLASHING AND AIRBAG LIGHT ON INSTRUMENT PANEL REMAINS ON. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG LIGHT IS NOT LIT INDICATING THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS PORTION OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. THE SUZUKI DEALER INFORMED ME THAT BESIDES THE PASSENGER AIR BAG BEING NON-FUNCTIONAL AS LONG AS THE INSTRUMENT PANELS RED AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON THERE WILL BE NO DEPLOYMENT OF THE PASSENGER OR DRIVER AIR BAGS WHEN NEEDED. ESSENTIALLY, THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DISABLED. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM FOR TWO REASONS: IT IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE FOR A 2004 SUZUKI GRAND VITARA / XL7 (AS SEEN BY THE MANY INTERNET POSTINGS ON THIS TOPIC) AND DUE TO THE SAFETY CONCERNS THAT ABSENCE OF AIRBAGS IN A CRASH CAN INCREASE THE LIKELIHOOD OF INJURY OR DEATH. OTHER INTERNET POSTINGS SHOW THIS TO BE FROM CERTAIN LOADING CONDITIONS THAT MAY CAUSE THE FOUR WEIGHT SENSORS IN THE FRONT PASSENGERS SEAT TO SENSE UNEQUAL LOADING. IT IS INTERESTING THIS IS FROM UNEQUAL LOADING SENSOR MALFUNCTION BECAUSE FOR MOST OF CARS LIFE THERE HAS NOT BEEN AN OCCUPANT IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. SUGGESTS THAT THIS COMPONENT WOULD HAVE FAILED SOONER HAD THERE BEEN A REGULAR FRONT SEAT PASSENGER.
