2008 Subaru Impreza problems

The Subaru Impreza (Japanese: スバル・インプレッサ, Hepburn: Subaru Inpuressa) is a compact car that has been manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru since 1992. It was introduced as a replacement for the Leone, with the predecessor's EA series engines replaced by the new EJ series. It is now in its sixth generation.

Subaru has offered a 5-door hatchback body variant since 2008. The firm also offered a coupé from 1995 until 2001, a 4-door sedan up to the fifth generation, and a 5-door wagon from the Impreza's introduction which was replaced by a hatchback with the third generation in 2008. Mainstream versions have received "boxer" flat-four engines ranging from 1.5- to 2.5-liters, with the performance-oriented Impreza WRX and WRX STI models upgraded with the addition of turbochargers. Since the third generation series, some markets have adopted the abbreviated Subaru WRX name for these high-performance variants. The first three generations of Impreza were also available with an off-road appearance non-SUV package called the Outback Sport, exclusive to the North American market. For the fourth generation, this appearance package was raised up to be subcompact crossover SUV and renamed the XV (Crosstrek in North America), and is sold internationally. Colloquially, the car is sometimes referred to as Scooby.

Subaru has offered front- and all-wheel drive layouts for the Impreza. Since the late-1990s, some markets have restricted sales to the all-wheel drive model, putting the Impreza in a unique selling proposition in the global compact class, which is usually characterized by front-wheel drive. Japanese models remain available in both configurations.

A 2019 iSeeCars study named the Impreza as the lowest-depreciating sedan in the United States after five years.

Common 2008 Subaru Impreza problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2008 Subaru Impreza, several common problems have been reported:

  • Leaky Head Gaskets:
    • Another prevalent problem reported by owners is leaky head gaskets. This issue leads to oil leaks, which can result in engine damage if not addressed promptly. The repair for this problem is often costly as it requires the engine to be removed for replacement.
  • Windshield/Windows Film:
    • Owners have complained about a film on the windshield and windows of the 2008 Impreza. This film not only obstructs visibility but can also reflect lights from traffic, causing further safety concerns. Many drivers have reported this issue at low mileage, around 2,900 miles.
  • Clutch Throw Out Bearing Failure:
    • Some owners have experienced issues with the clutch throw out bearing breaking in the 2008 Impreza. This can lead to difficulties in shifting gears smoothly, affecting the overall driving experience.
  • A/C Compressor Clutch Failure:
    • Another reported problem is the failure of the A/C compressor clutch in the 2008 Impreza. This can result in the air conditioning system not functioning properly, especially in hot weather conditions, impacting the comfort of the vehicle's occupants.

These common problems with the 2008 Subaru Impreza highlight various issues that owners have faced, ranging from safety concerns to mechanical failures. It's essential for owners to address these issues promptly to ensure the continued reliability and safety of their vehicles.

Are 2008 Subaru Imprezas reliable?

This is the most pragmatic vehicle I have ever owned. It is safe, efficient, comfortable, sporty enough, and has lots of utility with the hatchback and seats that fold down. It has been insanely reliable and always performed well. I guess that's why Subaru is such a well loved auto maker.

How many miles will a 2008 Subaru Impreza last?

Subaru drivers report the Impreza hitting 200,000, even 250,000 miles before the first major repair. Just to be safe you'll want to bet on the lower end of that scale when deciding if it's worth your hard earned money, but even a used model in fair condition should have no trouble passing 200k.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: JF1GH74628G
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: There is a weakness in the cars firewall around the master cylinder where the weld inside is breaking and it is cracking all around the master cylinder and I am unable to shift the car. I have taken the car to two different shops and both say the same thing that the firewall is failing. The brake pedal is shifting when you push down on the slutch and could compromise your ability to safely find the brake pedal in a braking event. Secondly, in the event of a crash, the clutch/brake pedal assembly could move in a direction not orginally designed causing injury to the legs/feet. If it breaks through all the way it will permanently damage the car beyond repair. I have gone online and read that this is happening to many many many people and their are class action lawsuits going on. I just want to be able to drive my car safely and not worry about killing myself or my kids and no one can fix it. IT NEEDS TO BE A SAFETY RECALL!! This is what I read online as soon as I looked it up: Some Subaru models have had issues with their firewalls, including the 2008–2010 Impreza and WRX. These issues can include broken welds that cause other parts of the clutch system to wear out. Some symptoms of a Subaru firewall issue include: Failed clutch, Failing pedal assembly, Sheet metal tearing, Heavy clutch pedal, and Squeaky clutch. Some Subaru owners have reported that the firewall is cracked where the master cylinder is attached, causing problems when shifting. Others have reported that spot welds under the cowl are either cracked or deformed, and that there are little spaces in the firewall where the master cylinder flexes. I just put $13000 into my car and now I can't even drive it because of this issue and it was not my fault. It is the fault of the manufacturer. PLEASE HELP ME!!

BECAUSE OF THESE ISSUES, I CAN ONLY ENGAGE MY REVERSE GEAR HALF THE TIME AND WHILE SHIFTING GEARS IN MOTION, IT TENDS TO BE A BIT DIFFICULT. I'VE ALMOST CRASHED A COUPLE TIMES BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. MY CAR IS A 2008 SUBARU WRX SEDAN WITH ONLY 74,000 MILES AND I'M CURRENTLY MAKING PAYMENTS ON THE CAR. MONEY IS REALLY TIGHT DUE TO ME BEING A FULL TIME COLLEGE STUDENT AND FULL TIME WORKER SO I'M NOT SURE HOW TO GO ABOUT THIS REALLY BIG PROBLEM. MY CAR IS EVERYTHING TO ME RIGHT NOW AND IF IT FAILS ON ME, I HAVE NO MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION. I ALSO HAVE NO MODIFICATIONS TO THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN WHEELS, AND A BLOW OFF VALVE. THE VEHICLE TENDS TO GIVE ME THE MOST DIFFICULTY ENGAGING REVERSE EVERY MORNING.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-17
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JF1GH61628H
  • Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: TAKATA RECALL- I WAS DRIVING IN THE SLOW (RIGHT SIDE) OF THE FREEWAY GOING ABOUT 68 MPH (BETWEEN 65-70), THERE WAS A SMALL AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC. THERE WAS AN EXTRA LANE (TEMPORARY 3 LANE FOR ENTRANCE, BUT NORMAL 2 LANE FREEWAY) TO MY RIGHT AND I BEGAN MERGING (OR POSSIBLY SWERVED FROM LOOKING OVER SHOULDER...AND A BEE FLEW INTO ME WHILE I WAS DRIVING ALSO CAUSING ME TO SWERVE A BIT). I ENDED UP IN THE FAST (LEFT) LANE THAT WAS GOING SLOWER DUE TO AN UNKNOWN REASON...WHICH CAUSED ME TO SLAM ON THE BREAKS, BUT I REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AT AN ANGLE (MY DRIVER SIDE FRONT TO THEIR PASSENGER SIDE BACK) BECAUSE I SWERVED BACK INTO THE LUCKILY EMPTY SPOT NEXT TO ME, BUT IT WASN'T FAST ENOUGH TO NOT HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I DIDN'T SEE MY EXACT SPEED WHEN I HIT THE CAR BUT I WAS GOING OVER THE DOCUMENTED (ON PREVIOUS PAGE) SPEED THAT THE AIRBAG SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED WITH THE AMOUNT OF IMPACT OUR CARS STRUCK...THIS VEHICLE WAS GOING LESS THAN 20 MPH AND I WAS GOING SOMEWHERE BETWEEN 50-60 MPH AND THE IMPACT WAS ALL ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE SO FROM WHAT I'VE BEEN READING THAT THE AIRBAG SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF....ESPECIALLY SINCE I HAD THE RECALL FIXED/SERVICED IN DECEMBER 2018, WHERE I HAD TO BRING THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT AN HOUR LATER BECAUSE SOME "HOSING" WASN'T CORRECTLY REINSTALLED. SO I'M CURIOUS IF ANYTHING ELSE WASN'T INSTALLED CORRECTLY THAT CAUSED THE AIRBAG NOT TO GO OFF. I HAD JUST TAKEN FULL COVERAGE OFF MY INSURANCE TO SAVE MONEY THREE DAYS PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT BECAUSE I AM IN THE MOVING PROCESS-NOW WITH NO COVERAGE TO MY DAMAGE (WHICH MY INSURANCE QUOTED AROUND 2900$ HAD I HAD FULL COVERAGE STILL), AS WELL AS MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR MYSELF AND I SPENT ABOUT 8 HOURS IN THE ER. WHICH ALSO WON'T BE COVERED. I AM NOT 100% CERTAIN OF HOW THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED BECAUSE I WASN'T SURE WHY TRAFFIC WAS SLOWED SO SUDDENLY; THE AIRBAGS SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF?

  • VIN: JF1GE74668G
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: MY SONS VEHICLE STARTED OFF WITH A SQUEAKING NOISE WHEN HE DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH. THIS WENT ON FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS HE IS NOW HAVING DIFFICULTY SHIFTING THE CAR INTO GEAR AND IT NEARLY CAUSED AN ACCIDENT THE OTHER DAY. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY, AND THE CLUTCH IS TOTALLY DEPRESSED IT IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO GET THE CAR INTO GEAR. WHEN DRIVING IT IS LESS DIFFICULT, BUT STILL VERY TRICKY TO GET INTO GEAR. WE ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN THE CLUTCH IS DEPRESSED, IF YOU RAISE THE HOOD, YOU CAN SEE THE FIREWALL FLEXING QUITE A BIT WHERE THE CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER IS LOCATED. WE REPLACED THE CLUTCH SLAVE CYLINDER AND IT DID NOT HELP THE ISSUE. IN MY READING ONLINE, I HAVE NOTICED MANY COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE RELATED TO THE FACTORY WELDS HOLDING THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY TO THE FIREWALL ARE FAILING. IT SEEMS TO BE A WIDESPREAD ISSUE FOR SUBARU IMPREZAS 2008-2014. I WOULD EXPECT THIS TO BE A FACTORY RECALL. MY SON CAN NO LONGER USE THE CAR AND WE ARE UNSURE ON HOW TO FIX THE ISSUE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE..

If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

Negative 2008 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Gregory Kassulke 2024-11-09

Hello! As you might have guessed from my title, I didn't have the best experience with my Subaru. While the WRX has great power and roadholding ability, I was disappointed by its reliability. I've owned several other cars with manual transmissions, including Hondas, Mazdas, Fords, and Chryslers, but this was the first one that needed a new transmission at only 83k miles. Before the replacement, it was difficult to get into reverse, and sometimes 1st and 2nd gear. Although the new transmission cost me $4k, it did improve the situation somewhat, but reverse is still a bit of a challenge. Additionally, the car has had 5 safety recalls and a class-action lawsuit due to failure of the firewall spot welds. I'm not a driver that's hard on vehicles, but I don't like vehicles that are hard on the drivers. Unfortunately, about 6 months and 5k miles after replacing my transmission, I had to replace it again at a cost of over $1k. The transmission shop informed me that Subaru transmissions are known for this issue. Shortly after this, I decided to upgrade to a different (non-Subaru) vehicle. As I stated in my title, this was my first and last Subaru. Thank you for listening to my experience!

  2. Watson Barton 2024-10-27

Although I initially loved this car for its handling, I was disappointed to experience issues with the rack and pinion at only 90,000 miles. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of a series of problems that arose. Despite investing 5K, I now need to replace the front driver's side axle and both lower control arms, and the car is only worth 2K. As a result, I have decided not to purchase the Outback I had been considering for 8 years, nor will I be buying another Subaru in the future.

  3. Trey Thompson 2024-10-09

The car looks great on paper, but in reality, it falls short in a few areas. Firstly, the 4-speed auto is not up to par and could benefit from an additional gear. In order to achieve any sort of acceleration, you have to shift it into 2nd gear. Secondly, the paint quality leaves something to be desired as there are chips everywhere. Lastly, the build quality could be improved as the steering-wheel control of the audio system barely works and requires a lot of pressure to function. Unfortunately, the dealership won't fix the problem since it still technically 'works'. Due to these issues, I have decided that this will be the last Subaru I ever purchase. If I could go back in time, I would not choose to purchase this car.

  4. Deron Langosh 2024-09-20

I've been driving this car for a little over a year now and I have to say that it hasn't been the best experience. The visibility, especially at night, could be improved as the position of the pillars and the size of the mirrors make it difficult to see. The engine is not the strongest and can be quite thirsty, getting around 22/23mpg on the highway when driving in cruise control at 65. The quality of materials inside the car could be better, as there are a lot of cheap plastics. The clutch pedal could also use some improvement as it lacks precision, making it difficult to drive smoothly. The Navigation system is a bit overpriced for what it offers and there is no built-in blue tooth. However, the seats are comfortable. Overall, there is room for improvement, but it's not all bad.

  5. Bret Waelchi 2024-08-07

I recently returned this car after leasing it for 30k miles. The deal was too good to pass up at only $199 per month. Throughout my ownership, the car proved to be incredibly reliable with no issues, even during 3 Syracuse winters on M+S tires. However, I was happy to part ways with the car due to excessive engine noise and annoying vibrations at high RPMs. Despite test driving other Subarus, I found that they all had the same issue due to the boxer engine. While the car accelerates briskly, it means high RPMs and unnecessary noise. On the bright side, the car is great at 45mph and gets a decent 27-30mpg (70% highway) during my ownership. Overall, it was a good car with some minor drawbacks.

Positive 2008 Subaru Impreza car reviews

  1. Adrian Gulgowski 2024-10-05

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought as my commuter ride. I drive 90 miles a day on mostly open roads with only a few stops and traffic lights. I'm so happy to report that I've been averaging 34-35 mpg for the last 10k miles! I think this is largely due to the lack of stop-and-go traffic and the high elevation (5500-7200'). I'm still amazed that this AWD car can be so nimble, get such great mileage, and perform so well in the mountains.

  2. Demarcus Leannon 2024-08-28

I've had it for less than a month and I absolutely love it! It's pretty quick and handles decently. I also love the spacious interior, and the AWD is fantastic in both rain and snow. The MPG is alright, considering I tend to drive pretty fast.

  3. Roscoe Gerlach 2024-07-15

I bought a Subaru Impreza WRX 5pd six months ago and it has been an absolute blast to drive! The acceleration is good, although there is a bit of turbo lag, and the handling is fantastic. It took me a little while to get used to the AWD, as it requires a bit more clutch than a FWD or RWD vehicle, but I'm excited to see how it performs in the snow this winter. This is my first Subaru, but it definitely won't be my last!

  4. D'angelo Hackett 2024-07-11

After reading extensive reviews and test driving both the 2008 STI and the new Evo, I decided to purchase the STI. I find the STI to be a pleasure to drive, especially for longer distances due to its comfortable seats. Additionally, the STI offers 3 different driving modes to choose from depending on your driving needs - Intelligent/everyday, Sport, and Sport Sharp. The Sport Sharp mode provides a cutting edge racing type driving experience that is truly exhilarating. I must admit, the acceleration over 3500 rpm is simply awesome! My partner and I are both thrilled with our new STI and find it to be a great family car.

  5. Baylee Bahringer 2024-05-08

I completely agree that the Impreza is an excellent choice for a first car for a teen. It's reliable, fun, and most importantly, safe. I was also impressed by its usability and resale value. I compared it to the Elantra, but ultimately chose the Impreza because of its personality and the fact that it has AWD, which is a rare feature in its class. I'm really happy with my purchase and love how beautiful it looks both inside and out.
