Common 2011 Audi Q5 problems
The 2011 Audi Q5 has been reported to have common problems related to excessive oil consumption and defective timing chains. The timing chain tensioner, which ensures the chain is tightly wound to the gears and pulleys, was reportedly prone to early failure in 2011-2012 Q5 models.
In addition to these problems, the 2011 Audi Q5 has experienced issues with the start-stop system, which cuts power at idle but reboots the engine once the vehicle is in motion. Owners have reported delays in throttle response and loss of brakes and power steering, making the car dangerous to drive. While it may be possible to disable or bypass this system, Audi still needs to address these issues.
Another common problem in the 2011 Audi Q5 is leaking or shattered sunroofs, which can lead to water ingress and damage the interior and electronic components. This issue has been reported in 2009-2017 models, often due to faulty seals or drainage issues.
Furthermore, Q5 models from 2011 and 2012 have often seen premature failure of their timing chains, which experts speculate is due to the timing chain tensioner introducing slack. Timing chains typically have longer lifespans than timing belts, but it's worth inspecting the timing chains and tensioners in these Q5s to ensure they're up to spec.
Q5 models from 2017 to 2020 experienced issues with the start-stop system that cuts power at idle but reboots the engine once the vehicle is in motion. Owners saw a delay in throttle response and a loss of brakes and power steering. While it may be possible to disable or bypass this system, Audi still has a few gremlins to work out.
Electrical glitches are also common in the 2011 Audi Q5, particularly linked to the air conditioning, boot switch, and the tyre pressure monitoring system. Diesel Q5s are fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) which needs to be cleared every so often by taking the car on a longer journey. Failure to do so can also result in an expensive repair bill.
In general, Q5 owners rate the car highly, but when things do go wrong, repairs tend to be expensive, which resulted in below-average ratings in the old What Car? reliability index. The main areas of concern are the electrics, followed by the engine and then the gearbox.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-06-10
- VIN: WA1DKAFPXBA
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Audi offered a warranty extension for intake manifold & fuel injectors in certain 2008-2011 Model Year Audi Vehicles with 2.0 TFSI Engine. Audi rejected our claim for a faulty fuel injector in our 2011 car citing that “vehicle does not have the extended warranty for fuel injectors and the information that was submitted was only for 2.0 TFSI Engine's with the Engine code of CBFA & CCTA. The engine in your vehicle is a 3.2 FSI with the Engine code CALB. So this warranty extension would not be applicable to your vehicle.” Our Audi dealership diagnosed our car with the same fuel injector issue listed by Audi in this warranty extension as well as stating that this is a very common issue with our make, model and year. Our Audi is a 2011 model, less than 120,000 miles, and less than 10 years when the malfunction indicator lamp appeared. Their letter does not stand to prove that a faulty fuel injector was not placed in our car that was built in 2011, the same year that they installed faulty fuel injectors in their 2.0 TFSI engines. Audi dealership diagnosed our car as suffering from misfire conditions that in turn cause the malfunction indicator lamp to appear. The dealership indicates that this is a common issue with Audis during our production year. This is the same issue that Audi listed in their warranty extension letter to consumers with 2.0 TFSI engines. Our car meets all the requirements in Audi’s warranty extension letter (2011 model, less than 120,000 miles, and less than 10 years when the malfunction indicator lamp appeared) except that our car is a 3.2 FSI vs 2.0 TFSI. Audi is not able show that they did not install a faulty fuel injector into our car. Fuel injector problems in cars with mileage under 100,000 miles and less than 10 years of age is very uncommon. This plus Audi’s history of installing faulty fuel injectors into cars built in our year lead us to believe that Audi also installed a faulty fuel injector into our car.

The dealer then asked to bring the vehicle in so they could take their own pictures. Contacted Audi NA and spoke with rep about problem. The phone call ended abruptly when the Audi NA rep refused to file a claim and hung up on me.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-05
- VIN: WA1CFAFP7BA
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: MY 2011 AUDI Q5 WOULD NOT START ONE MORNING WHEN TRYING TO START THE CAR IN MY GARAGE (DEC 2019). I HAD IT TOWED TO THE FLETCHER JONES AUDI DEALERSHIP IN CHICAGO IL WHERE I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL CUSTOMER SINCE MOVING HERE IN 2014. THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC AND IDENTIFIED THAT THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER HAD SLIPPED, AND MAY HAVE CAUSED "CATASTROPHIC" FAILURE TO MY ENGINE. THEY PROCEEDED TO ASK FOR ANOTHER $1,500 TO DIAGNOSE THE ENGINE FOR THE FAILURE, AND MENTIONED IF IF HAD FAILED IT COULD BE UP TO $10,000 TO FIX THE PROBLEM. AFTER A SHORT BIT OF RESEARCH, IT TURNS OUT THERE IS A WARRANTY THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM AND AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. MY DEALERSHIP NEVER TOLD ME THIS, AND WAS JUST EXPECTING ME TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. ALSO, I HAD MY CAR SERVICED THERE 4 DIFFERENT TIMES SINCE THE RECALL HAD BEEN ANNOUNCED. THEY NEVER ONCE INFORMED ME OF THIS. I CALLED TO ASK WHY THEY HADN'T MENTIONED THIS WARRANTY OR THIS ISSUE, AND THERE WAS NOT A GOOD ANSWER. FLETCHER JONES ALSO SAID THEY CHECK MY VIN EVERY TIME I BRING IT IN TO SEE IF THERE IS ANYTHING OUTSTANDING REGARDING RECALLS ETC ON THE CAR, WHICH MEANS THEY COULD HAVE ALERTED ME TO THIS MULTIPLE TIMES WHEN I BROUGHT THE CAR IN PRIOR, BUT THEY DID NOT. THEY COULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS ISSUE. FAST FORWARD TO NOW, AUDI WILL ONLY COVER 25% OF THE ISSUE, AND FLETCHER JONES IS BARELY MAKING AN EFFORT TO HELP OUT ON THEIR END. I WILL BE OUT NEARLY $5,000 TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM, WHICH IS NO FAULT OF MINE AND A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF ENGINEERING ON THE PART OF AUDI. IT ISN'T RIGHT THAT AUDI DOES NOT FULLY COVER THIS EXPENSE. AND MOREOVER, THE DEALERSHIP SHOULD HAVE A DUTY OF CARE TO DISCLOSE THEM ITEMS SUCH THAT WE CAN TAKE THE STEPS TO PREVENT THEM. FLETCHER JONES DID WRONG BY ME BY NOT DISCLOSING THIS, AND IS LIKELY DEFRAUDING AND MANIPULATING MORE CLIENTS EVERY DAY THEY REMAIN IN OPERATION.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-12
- VIN: WA1CFAFPXBA
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: OIL CONSUMPTION ISSUE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. UNDER ANY ACCELERATION, SMOKE COMES OUT THE EXHAUST. USES ABOUT 1 QUART OF OIL PER 300 MILES. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-05-08
- VIN: WA1DKAFP4BA
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: TRANSMISSION SHIFT GEARS VERY BAD, WHILE BREAKING, FROM 2 GEAR TO 1ST GEAR CAR "JUMPS" FORWARD, I SEEN A LOT OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT IT. SOMETHIMES WHEN I PUT IN TO REVERSE, IT TAKES A MINUTE UNTIL IT START DRIVING.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-11
- VIN: WA1LFAFP8BA
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
- Summary: TIMING CHAIN ISSUE THAT CAUSED IT TO JUMP, DAMAGING THE CYLINDER HEADS AND VALVES. AS I WAS PROCEEDING TO STOP AT AT A LIGHT, THE FRONT END OF THE CAR BEGAN TO SHAKE AND THE ENGINE SEEMED OFF. AT A FULL STOP, THE ENGINE SPUTTERED AGAIN AND THEN PROCEEDED TO DIE. THE CAR WOULDN'T START, SO I COULD NOT PROCEED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. AUDI WILL NOT COVER ANY DAMAGE THAT WAS CAUSED AND IS INDICATING THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE ISSUES WITH THE TIMING CHAINS. I'VE SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND MANY OTHER LAWSUITS WHERE THIS TYPE OF ISSUE HAS BEEN COVERED FROM AUDI.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-01
- VIN: WA1BNAFY0K2
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: AT ABOUT 63,000 MILES MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND I CHECKED CODE AND P0018 SHOWED UP. IT FAILED EMISSIONS TEST SUBSEQUENTLY FOR LICENSE RENEWAL. I TOOK IN TO DEALERSHIP AND FIRST TIME THEY SAID A SENSOR WAS SLIGHTLY LOOSE AND A LITTLE CORROSION ON. SAID IT WAS FIXED AND MEETS MANUF. SPECIFICATIONS. LIGHT CAME BACK ON 2 DAYS LATER. JUST TOOK IN AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE LEFT SIDE TIMING BELT AND $6,100 TO FIX. WHAT TROUBLES ME IS THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE SAME YEAR AUDI BUT ONLY FOR THE 2.0. MY CAR IS APPARENTLY THE ONLY 3.2 LITER HAVING THIS ISSUE. NO RECALL? IT OCCURRED AT THE SAME MOMENT IN TIME, AROUND 65,000 MILES. WHILE I WAS APPEASED SLIGHTLY BY THEM OFFERING TO FIX IT FOR PARTS COST..... ABOUT $3,300, AND THE SUBSEQUENT BILL WAS A SURPRISING (TO THE GOOD) BILL OF $2327.25 INCLUDING THE NECESSARY OIL CHANGE, I JUST QUESTION THE FACT THAT THERE IS NO PENDING RECALL ON THE AUDI Q5 3.2 LITER. AND UNFORTUNATELY STILL A SUSPICIOUS COST. EVERYTHING WAS DONE AMICABLY, AS TIME WAS OF THE ESSENCE. BUT STILL FEEL SHORTED THAT MY 3.2 DOESN'T FALL INTO THIS RECALL.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-03
- VIN: WA1LFAFP3BA

- Summary: AT 79,000 MILES ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AFTER TIMING BELT AND TENSIONER FAILED. THIS IS THE 2ND ENGINE FOR THIS CAR. TIMING BELT DESTROYED PISTONS, RODS AND CYLINDERS. WARNING LIGHT WENT ON, I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, AND IT FORTUNATELY EXHIBITED THE FAILURE AT THE DEALERSHIP.
ENGINE PROBLEM

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-07-03
- VIN: WA1LFAFP6BA
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THE SUNROOF SUNSHADE BROKE WHILE RETRACTING AND BLOCKED REAR WINDOW CAUSING A HAZARD. I HAD TO TAPE IT UP AS IT IS NOW ONLY PARTIALLY ATTACHED AND I AM UNABLE TO REMOVE. IT IS TAPED SO I CAN CONTINUE DRIVING SAFETLY. I WAS DRIVING WHEN THIS HAPPENED.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-06-07
- VIN: WA1LFAFP2BA
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: UPON ATTEMPTING TO START THE ENGINE, THE TIMING CHAIN SLIPPED CAUSING PISTONS TO HIT INTAKE VALVES, WRECKING ENGINE. ONLY 77,000 MILES ON VEHICLE. I DO NOT QUALIFY FOR CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT DUE TO FILING DEADLINES BUT AM FACING UP TO $14,000 IN REPAIR COSTS. IT IS UNREASONABLE FOR AN ENGINE TO FAIL CATASTROPHICALLY AT SUCH A LOW MILEAGE ADN THERE TO BE NO MANUFACTURER LIABILITY.

2011 Audi Q5 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2011 Audi Q5.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2007-2012 Audi Q7 and 2009-2012 Audi Q5 vehicles, previously repaired under NHTSA recall 16V-660. These vehicles were previously repaired with an interim repair of installing butyl tape to the fuel pump flange, until replacement remedy parts became available.
- Consequence: The butyl tape may not prevent fuel from leaking. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump flange and install butyl tape, free of charge. The recall began December 28, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 20BJ.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2006-2013 Audi A3, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2008 RS4 Cabriolet, 2009-2012 Q5, and 2010-2012 Audi A5 Cabriolet and S5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 23, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R6. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 16V-078.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2011-2017 Audi Q5 vehicles. The sunroof drainage system may allow water to soak into the foam surrounding the side head air bag inflator canister resulting in the corrosion of the canister. If this happens, the corrosion can weaken the canister and the inflator could fracture without air bag deployment, propelling fragments into the passenger compartment, striking and causing serious injury to vehicle occupants.
- Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the inflator and either coat it or replace it, as necessary, after removing the surrounding foam, free of charge. The recall is expected to began March 2017. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69P1.

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2009-2012 Audi Q5, and 2007-2012 Audi Q7 vehicles equipped with gasoline engines. The fuel pump flange on the affected vehicles may crack, allowing fuel to leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the flange, replacing any flanges that are cracked. If the flange is not cracked, dealers will clean the pump flange and install a butyl rubber band to protect the pump. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began November 9, 2016. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 20W9.
- Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Golf, 2007-2010 Passat sedans and wagon, 2012-2014 Passat sedan and Eos, 2009-2014 CC, 2009-2012 Audi Q5, 2010-2012 S5 Cabriolet and 2010-2012 Audi A5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflators, free of charge. Volkswagen issued an interim notification to owners on April 12, 2016, and will send a second notification when parts are available. Volkswagen will notify owners again once parts are available. This vehicle is such a pleasure to drive! It's incredibly smooth and has plenty of power for a 4 cylinder. The build quality is right up there with Mercedes and BMW. I actually paid more for my 2003 Acura MDX than I did for this Audi Q5, and I have to say, I think I got a lot more bang for my buck with the Q5.

I'm so glad to hear that the 2.0T version of the Q5 was released in 2011! Although it sounds like a 4 cylinder (which is still pretty smooth), the new 8sp transmission does need to shift more often to keep up to speed. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the Q5 in 2.0T trim. It drives like a car with great handling and a quiet, smooth ride. I have the Premium Plus with standard 18

After driving 1500 miles, I have a few observations about the car. While it is overall a nice ride, I have noticed that the 8-speed transmission can be a bit of a challenge. At low speeds (under 10mph), it can stutter and feel harsh. It's similar to a car that is sputtering at idle, although it's coming from the transmission, not the engine. Additionally, the transmission is constantly shifting, and while the sport mode doesn't seem to make it any smarter at gear selection, it does hold it for higher revs. I have to say, my Sienna minivan provides smarter, smoother, and quicker shifts (not that I'm trying to insult anyone!).

As a soccer mom who is getting closer to the 'mid-life crisis', I was looking for a car that would bring back the fun in my life. I am happy to say that I found it in the Audi Q5 2.0T premium plus! The power and handling of this car are amazing, and I love the sporty yet luxurious feel. Although the interior space is a bit tight, it's a small sacrifice for the beauty of this car. While I haven't been getting the mileage I was hoping for and premium gas can be pricey, I still think it's worth it. I do hope that the Audi 'quality' holds up over the years, but overall, I am very pleased with my Q5. I did experience a big hiccup feeling when slowing down towards a stop sign, which I believe may be due to the drive-by-wire system. I am interested to know more about this and if it's something to be concerned about, but for now, I am enjoying my new ride!

I've been driving my CPO 2011 Q5 for over 7 years now and it's been an absolute pleasure. The ride is lovely and the dealer has provided great service, especially with the CPO extended warranty up to 100k miles. Over the years, I've had a few issues, but the dealer has always been quick to address them. For example, they replaced a broken sunvisor free of charge and repaired a leak in a body panel that caused water to come in, also free of charge. The fuel pump sensor, PRV, and hood latch sensor were all fixed under warranty. While the build quality could be better, I've been told that Audi is working on it. As a cautiously optimistic Audi fan, I only buy CPOs since they come with an extended warranty. Recently, I had to spend $2450 on replacing the radiator, radiator fans, blower motor, and VCDS programming at an independent shop in Dallas. It's unclear how this happened, but I've heard that quite a few Audi's have had similar issues. However, more recent models reportedly don't have these issues.

I purchased my vehicle on March 1st, 2021, and was not informed of any potential oil consumption issues. However, within 4 weeks, I had to add 4 quarts of oil. Despite my attempts to seek assistance from the dealer and Audi USA, I have not received any satisfactory resolution. I am confident that this issue can and should be addressed by the manufacturer.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Audi 2011 Q5 with the 2.0T. After doing a lot of research, I decided to buy one and overall, I'm really happy with it. The ride is excellent, gas mileage is very good, and the fit and finish is excellent. However, I did run into an issue with the car burning oil at a very high rate. At 4000 miles, I had to add a full quart of oil. According to the manual, it can burn 1 qt. every 600 miles, which seems like a lot. I called 3 dealers and they all confirmed that it does burn a lot of oil. Unfortunately, this was not acceptable for me, so I decided to sell it and get a Toyota Rav4 4WD instead. The Rav4 has more power, more cargo room, and doesn't burn oil. Thanks for listening to my experience!

I recently purchased a used 2011 Audi Q5 2.0 with 95K miles. While it drove well, I found the numerous buttons and distractions to be too much to handle while driving, making it a dangerous and distracting experience. Additionally, the vehicle burned a quart of oil every 1800K miles, which was a major inconvenience. Fortunately, I was able to get my money back after owning it for only a month. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing this vehicle, especially if it is used.

I've had this car for 8 years and it's been a great ride, but unfortunately, I've experienced some serious issues with the transmission. At around 50K Kms, the gearbox started having problems. The first time, a sensor failure caused a gearbox malfunction and replacing the sensor cost a fortune since the whole gearbox needed to be dismantled. This was a poor design choice. Now, less than a year later, there is another gearbox malfunction and I am unable to use the reverse gear. This time, the whole mechatronic unit of the transmission needs to be replaced. I'm feeling quite frustrated with these repeated faults and expensive repairs. Based on my experience, I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy an Audi car.

Congratulations on your new 2011 Q5! It sounds like you did your research and took all the necessary precautions before purchasing it. It's unfortunate that you've experienced some issues with the air conditioner, blower motor, engine light, and rear view mirror. I hope that the Audi team was able to resolve these issues for you.
