2020 Kia Soul problems
The Kia Soul is a subcompact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Kia since 2008. Often described and marketed as a crossover since its introduction, the Soul is a hatchback with a box proportion and tall roof, which are designed to maximize its interior space. Despite its SUV-like styling, the Soul was never available with all-wheel drive, instead it is exclusively a front-wheel drive vehicle.
The Soul first appeared in 2006 in the form of a concept model displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The production model made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. During its introduction, Kia stated that the Soul is aimed at the North American market, and targeted towards buyers in the 18 to 35-year old range.
The second-generation model was introduced in 2013 for the 2014 model year, which featured a larger exterior and interior dimensions along with a reworked chassis, while keeping its boxy styling. The Soul is currently in its third generation, which was introduced in 2018 for the 2019 model year. Since 2014, Kia has also marketed a battery electric variant as the Soul EV.
The name "Soul" comes from the homophone of Seoul, the city that hosts Kia's headquarters.

Common 2020 Kia Soul problems
The common problems reported by owners of the 2020 Kia Soul include delayed gear changes, warped brake rotors, and check engine lights.
- Delayed Gear Changes: Owners have experienced delayed gear changes within the first 2,500 miles of driving. This issue can be addressed through software updates for the transmission control module, improving gear change times and reliability. Dealerships typically offer these updates for free during regular servicing, although some may charge around $100 for labor.
- Warped Brake Rotors: Some Kia Soul models have been found to develop warped brake rotors around 10,000 miles. Excessive brake force can lead to the build-up of heat in the rotors, causing them to warp over time. Replacing the brake rotors usually costs around $600.
- Check Engine Lights: Owners have reported instances of check engine lights coming on within the first 20,000 miles of driving. Various reasons can trigger this warning, requiring the use of an OBD-II scan tool to diagnose the issue. Repair costs for addressing the cause of the check engine light typically range from $50 to $500.
These issues, although common among small cars of the same year, can lead to average repair costs as the Kia Soul ages. It's important for Kia Soul owners to address these problems promptly to ensure the longevity and performance of their vehicles.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-27
- Fire: 1
- VIN: KNDJ63AU5L7
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving to work. 12 miles my oil leaked. A state trooper turned around when seeing flames and called the fire department and tow truck. I lost control of the car, nothing was working. I was only ever given one recall notice which I fixed 2 months after buying the car. The car also has issues with security. Only certain insurance companies will cover the car and their prices are higher. We took car to dealership . three months later I contact attorney general. The GM this started attacking us, denying anything happened etc. He should be fired for how he treats people. Reviews of their business show others have had issues. Kia corporate has always told us they r waiting on images yet this GM contacted them, told us to leave, and screamed he would charge us for every day it was on lot. So we had it towed the next day. Insured company will be doing their own I xpection. This isn't about money, its about safety and these cars have slot of issues. It is wrong to blame the consumer for a faulty product. We had to get new car and now upside down in this one. We bought thus Kia be,cause the previous one the engine seized. We expressed our concerns, but got put in another car with issues. Kia corporate has been non talking to us the entire three months, so the only findings can be based on what GM said. They washed the motor. It sat so long the battery died. Someone went through papers in the glove box then left them out. We had medicine in the loaner, which they say is a lie. My daughter drives the car and recently was laid off. So now she can't have her medication..... Although she left it in the car they had no right to do that. There was plenty of other issues along the way.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- VIN: KNDJ23AU8L7
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine using oil at only 45,000 miles. It's been less than 500 miles since last oil change and today had to put 1/2 quart of oil. Had all recalls done. Told the dealership it was using oil, they said it was a faulty gasket and oil drain plug was lose. Changed everything including oil, gasket and tightened the oil drain plug. But today less than 500 miles later had to add half quart of oil. I am the original owner and I know Kia says a quart per 1000 miles is acceptable. I have owned older cars with over 100,000 miles never used oil in between changes, I have owned new cars never had to top off between oil changes. I am afraid my engine should be recalled now, I don't trust my soul anymore. There's absolutely no reason for this car with 50,000 miles should be using oil. If it breaks down I am hearing that Kia probably won't repair or put new motor in as I have read and heard everyone saying. Even doing a compression test they won't pay for it unless it's rod bearing, no rental car during any time. I have lots of doctors appointments that are over 2 hours away and I am scared of being broken down ( disabled 61 years old female). I am scared that this car is going to cause me harm . I don't know if the dealership even looked into the rings when they did the recall. Also I have nobody to borrow car from so if Kia was to do the warranty I would need a loaner car, rental car for the duration of the work.

I tried turning off the key and attempting to restart the car however it would start but for only a few seconds. After 5 or 6 tries to restart the car, I finally turned off the car, waited about 3 minutes and then restarted the car in as it continued to run. The check engine light remained on but I noticed that there was a drop in power when I tried to accelerate. Since then I have notice the engine check light go on and off several times. I recently brought my car in to have an oil change only to find out that there was no oil on the dipstick. I signed a form stating this and got the oil change completed. I have had the Software Program installed about 3 months after I heard of the recall, however the Local Kia Dealer will not do the diagnostic unless I pay a diagnostic fee because I have a check engine light on... I am calling KIA at the corporate number tomorrow to ascertain " IF " I will still have to pay for the Recall issues ...

I traded in a 2013 Kia Soul + which I truly enjoyed driving. The Soul is such a fun car to drive. I traded the 2013 Soul for the new design 2020 Kia Soul Ex. This car is even more fun to drive! With all the features you get with the Ex, it is definitely worth the additional cost to upgrade. If you're looking for a fun car, you should definitely consider the new 2020 Soul.

Hello! To all the people who have mentioned that the transmission shifts are harsh or odd, I would like to share my experience. In my opinion, it's all about how you drive it. I must say that the GT-Line Turbo has some really awesome features. The Harmon Kardon stereo is beyond excellent and the safety features are top-notch. The styling is also standout both inside and out. However, I do feel that Kia needs to work on offering features that are not necessarily included in the model you are interested in. For instance, I have every feature possible except for vented seats. Unfortunately, no dealer seems to know how to add them. Therefore, I would advise you to get everything you are offered by the dealer in writing. Also, make sure to buy the car in the town you live in because Kia has no power to enforce the dealers to honor their agreements. The power in this car is incredible! 90% of the time when I leave a traffic light, most cars are half a mile behind in seconds without pushing that hard on the gas. If you put steady pressure on the gas, you will get nonstop acceleration. I have had many cars try to race to get in front of me, including BMWs, Mercedes, Camaros, etc. (No exaggeration). Overall, I am extremely happy with my Kia Soul GT-Line Turbo and I will drive it until the wheels fall off. Thank you for reading!

I've been driving the 2020 Kia Soul LX for less than a month and I must say, it's been an excellent experience so far! Although it took me a while to get used to all the new features, the car has performed flawlessly. Living in Northeast Ohio, where there are no steep mountains and it's currently winter, I've mostly driven in the city with a little on highways. I'm happy to report that I think it gets more than 27 miles per gallon city and 33 highway. For me, visual appearance is important and the Mars Orange exterior color, black interior, and unique silhouette of the Soul are a perfect combination. The front seats are the best of any car I've owned or ridden in and can be adjusted to fit anyone. Despite being a small car, the excellent visibility and driving position make it feel much larger. The darkened rear passenger windows and trunk window are a nice touch. Virtually everything is either automatic or available if you want it, including setting the temperature at 72 degrees and having a heated steering wheel. Speaking of which, the power steering is assisted electronically, giving it almost a feather touch. Although the radio pre-sets in my area aren't great, the rotary tuning knob comes to the rescue. In summary, this car is a perfect combination of fun and beauty, and at a great price too! I'm not a paid spokesman for the company, but I must give credit where it's due.

The Soul is an amazing car at an incredible price. We decided to purchase this one because our daughter had one for 10 years without any issues. I opted for the 18-inch wheels which greatly improved the ride quality. The car offers ample headroom and the back seat is extremely comfortable. It boasts an impressive array of safety features, especially considering the price.

I had to finally trade my 2008 Kia Optima in with 193000. I was sad to see it go, but I absolutely LOVE my new Kia Soul GT (Clear White/Red Top)! I was a bit skeptical at first, but this car has so much room, rides great and has a lot of perks for the price! I especially like the 18 inch wheels and the fact that it feels like I'm driving a small SUV. I highly recommend it!!

How reliable is the 2020 Kia Soul? See the most common repairs performed and learn if your vehicle is at risk for major repairs in the next 12 months.
Ludwig Yundt 2024-11-23
We purchased our 2020 Soul brand new in November 2019. Unfortunately, at just 626 miles (of very light, easy driving), the transmission suffered catastrophic failure. We had to wait for another transmission to arrive from Korea and were without our car for 2 months. When we picked up the car, the dealer assured us that it was a fluke, but I later learned that this is not an uncommon issue. Kia used the same CVT transmission in the 2019 Forte, which also suffered from problems. After conducting extensive research, I discovered that the CVT transmission has damaged the reputation of many major car brands, particularly Nissan and others. The CVT transmission lacks the gears of previous types and is supposed to offer better fuel economy, but unfortunately, it is a new and untested type for most manufacturers. I am sorry, but I cannot recommend this car to anyone as long as they use this new, untested transmission. Although it was covered under warranty since it was a brand new car, the total bill was over $3500. Kia did pay for the full repair and apologized, for which I will give them credit. However, who wants a car that will need a transmission replacement every so often, which requires a second mortgage to pay for? Ludicrous.
Vaughn Cole 2024-10-07
The car has covered 26000 miles and has been to the shop twice due to transmission slipping out of gear, requiring towing.

I purchased my 2020 Soul LX in June of 2020. Unfortunately, it started knocking at 6k miles and now has 13k miles on it. Kia has stated that this is normal, which has been disappointing. It's not the experience I was hoping for with my new car. I've noticed people staring at my car in parking lots due to the bottom end knock, which can be a bit embarrassing. Additionally, the car has a lot of blow-by and burns 2.5 quarts of oil every 5k miles. Kia has said that it's okay to burn up to 3 quarts in-between changes, but the car only holds 4.25 quarts. I believe that if Kia stood behind their product, they could have a great one. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a Kia to anyone or purchase another one. I should have kept my Ford Escape, which had a better drivetrain and no knocking!

I have been a proud owner of a 2020 Kia Soul turbo for over a year now. However, I recently discovered that some of the features that were included in the model package are only available through a subscription. It was disappointing to learn that in order to use basic navigation, remote start, or remote lock, I would need to pay a $300 annual fee. I was not aware of this when I purchased the car and it has left me feeling misled. I believe it would have been helpful if Kia had been more transparent about this subscription-based model. Despite this, I still enjoy my car and hope that Kia will consider being more upfront with their customers in the future.

Pros: The seats are very comfortable even on long trips. Cons: Unfortunately, it is impossible to lock the car with the engine running, even manually. This means that if you want to leave the AC on for a pet in the car, you have to leave the car unlocked. Additionally, at 43,000 miles, some things have begun to break. For example, the driver side door lock will not unlock anymore. I have to open the back door and reach to the front to unlock my driver door with my finger. However, I can lock it with the fob or the power lock button, just not unlock it. The radiator needed to be replaced at 40,009 miles and the driver side wiper simply stopped working at 36,100 miles. I have an uneasy feeling about the long-term reliability of this 2020 Soul, since things are beginning to break so early on.
