2017 Honda Accord hybrid problems

The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.
Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.
In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.
In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Negative 2017 Honda Accord hybrid car reviews
Positive 2017 Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

I wasn't originally planning on purchasing an Accord Hybrid sedan. I was deciding between a 2018 Sport or EX, and casually inquired about the price of a Hybrid. To my surprise, a 2017 EX-L Hybrid was only $26,500, which is about the same as a new Sport and $750 less than a new EX. This price is at least $6000 off the sticker price, making it a deal too good to pass up. I have owned a 2007 Civic Hybrid and a 2014 Toyota Prius, so hybrids are not new to me. I bought the car without too much analysis up-front, but have studied it more after buying it two weeks ago and putting about 900 miles on it. From a gas-electric analysis, the transition between electric and gas motors is seamless. You can tell by sound which motors are invoked, but the car doesn't jerk when switching modes. Other than the information display indicating which motor(s) are active, you might not even know. I tested the car through one tank without Eco Mode on and got about 45 mpg in mixed driving. Within Eco Mode on, I'm getting 48 or better in cool to cold weather. The digital dash displays take a little training to understand what all the icons and bar indicators mean, but that plays into a hybrid owner's love of such a car (more on this in a minute). This redesigned hybrid for 2017 has a combined 212 horsepower, and combined with a midsize car, you won't believe you can get the stated 48/47 mpg until you see it for yourself. Those Honda engineers have really outdone themselves. The Sport mode is extra peppy and a nice treat for revving the engine up for acceleration. The eCVT transmission still doesn't jerk between gear ratios for a really smooth ride. I traded in a 2015 Accord EX for this hybrid and can tell a definite improvement in the suspension and steering between this 2017 and my 2015. The leather interior is black, which is my first ever black interior. I'm loving the heated seats in cold weather.I'm not sure how comfortable the seats will be in the summer when the cabin gets hot after sitting in the sun for a while, but the ventilation holes might help. I'll report back on the summer comfort of the black leather seats at a later date. The dual video screens take some getting used to, but the EX-L has Apple Play integration which I love. However, it can be a bit finicky to work with. I've had a podcast app go quiet through the system after shutting the car off and trying to resume the same podcast later after reconnecting the phone. The navigation of the video screen is not intuitive, but you will learn the main menu paths pretty quickly. I know which options I'll be picking most often, so the lack of intuitiveness is not a show stopper. The touch volume control is not preferred over a physical knob, but I can live with it and the steering controls. The XM radio is a welcome addition, but I'm still deciding if I'll continue to subscribe after the trial. With the 2017 hybrid, you lose the fold-down seat capability compared to the gas Accord, so that's a small drawback. The car feels very solid and well-built. Time will tell how the mechanicals hold up over the long haul, but I have a good feeling that it will be reliable. Some other reviewers have complained about Hybrid reliability and have had many issues with the systems. With my two previous hybrids, I did not ever have mechanical failures of the hybrid technology or gas engine components. I will update my experience with the car as I drive it further. The Eco Score on the MIDI is nice, but a little hard to figure out until you read the owner's manual; it is both a current drive and lifetime score of hybrid efficiency. As far as all the information provided for gas mileage rankings and driver information, I'll say that I'm the perfect type of owner for a hybrid because I like playing the game of getting the best possible gas mileage in a car.I think a lot of hybrid owners enjoy the challenge of driving for ideal gas mileage with every tankful. It's like a game, and the numerous gauges and measures keep the driver informed of their success in squeezing every drop out of the gas tank. With a range of around 700 miles on a tank of gas, you'll be spending a lot less time at the gas pump with this car. I am very happy with my impulse purchase! Update December 2019: After two years of ownership and 25,000 miles, I am still just as happy with this car as the day I bought it. There have been no mechanical issues, and the gas mileage averages 42 mpg in winter and 53 mpg in summer. The gas range on a tank is 650-725 miles, although I could squeeze a little more out if I tried. I love the amenities like Apple Car Play and two video screens for info. The 2020 models look great and have a full trunk, while the only real drawback of the 2017 model is its small trunk and lack of fold-down seats.

The 2017 Accord Hybrid Touring is a great car that offers a fun and sporty driving experience. Although it may be confusing at first, it doesn't take long to get it under control. The different drive modes are fun to play with, especially Sport mode which is definitely sporty, and Econ mode which is best for winter. The car drives like a regular car if you forget about it. Comfort is adequate, but the sportier handling and pavement irregularities are noticeable. My biggest complaint is the fixed rear seat, which can be a hindrance at times. However, I'm averaging 45mpg mixed driving per tank, and have even seen 60 around town. Everyone that gets in it for the first time is impressed, which is saying something for a Honda. The fit and finish are what you should expect for a car near 40k. Overall, it's a sweet car that's not perfect, but after 23,000 miles, I have no big regrets and zero mechanical issues.

ONE YEAR UPDATE: Still love the car! I've driven 13K miles since I bought it and it's still amazing. The car provides all the data you need or can imagine with its two screens. Even with high gas prices, this model is selling for at least 5K more than I paid for it. The car rides well at all speeds and is especially quiet when in EV mode. I haven't had any issues with it, except for the battery dying at 31K miles, which AAA replaced for only 140 bucks. The Honda battery is good for about 5 years, so it's important to plan for it. I would certainly buy this car again! UPDATE: I've owned the car for about 6 months now and I'm still averaging 44 MPG since the purchase, which includes several trips to NC all highway, at about 79 MPH. The car travels well and is perfect for daily commutes and errands. I still love the two screens and they don't stick up in my field of view like many of the single screen dash designs out now. Buy it, you will love it!!I came across a 2017 Hybrid Touring that was traded in at the local Lexus dealer. With the recent increase in gas prices and the 'war on oil', I started considering it, even though I have always been wary of hybrid technology. However, I absolutely love the car! Before purchasing it, I read all the reviews and I agree that the lane control is a bit weird and not nearly as effective as our Outback with eyesight, so I turned it off. The trunk is smaller compared to my 2013, but there are two cubbies underneath and a small one on top of the batteries (15lb limit). It bugs me that there is no spare tire, but I carry a plug kit and Ryobi compressor as well as the one provided. A blowout is a show stopper, so I may opt for a donut spare. The technology is great and having owned a 2013 EXL, I love the double screens. I don't miss the volume knob as I always used the steering wheel controls. The previous owner got over 2000 miles with 49mpg, and we are getting the same over my first half tank. The car rides well as expected. The engine is a bit noisy, but if you brake early and maintain it, the regeneration keeps the battery up. The power is good and it's as quick as my 2013. I folded the seat in my 2013 twice in the years I owned it, so missing this option was no big deal. It's the same color as my 2013, pearl white with black interior. When shopping used, the selection is limited, but white was fine. Overall, I am really impressed with the Accord Hybrid! I plan to add an IWS warranty in May when the factory warranty expires, as technology can be expensive to repair. I wish it had the 19-inch rims, but overall, I am very pleased with the car! The 2017 Camry was not even close in quality, ride or mpg. It's a great car!

I rarely write reviews, but I just had to share my experience with my Accord Hybrid EXL. I've been driving it for 6 weeks now and I absolutely love it! My daily 50-mile commute in stop-and-go traffic used to be a nightmare, but now I (almost) look forward to it! The leather interior is not only stylish but also very comfortable. My favorite feature is the Bluetooth, which makes my life so much easier. The car's exterior design is sleek and cool, and the ride is incredibly quiet. I'm actually surprised that some people are getting less than the advertised gas mileage. I'm getting 48-49 mpg, but I do drive less aggressively than I used to and keep it on the ECO setting all the time. Before buying this car, I did a lot of research, and I can confidently say that it's the perfect car for me. I highly recommend it if you're in the market for a hybrid.

I'm so glad I waited for the Accord Hybrid after researching hybrids for a while. I've been driving it for two weeks now and I'm getting an average of 46 mpg on my 42-mile one-way commute. One day last week, I even got 53 mpg on a trip! The best part is that I was able to purchase the same trim level I would have gotten if it wasn't a hybrid, and it's similarly priced to a non-hybrid Accord. The only downside is the radio controls, which aren't very intuitive when changing the source through the screen while my iPhone is connected. However, this might be intentional to encourage using the steering wheel thumb controls and keeping your eyes on the road. It took some time to get used to the Honda Sensing features, but now I'm comfortable with them. After six months, I still think it's an outstanding vehicle! It's even fun to see how high I can get the average trip mileage in parking lots (I once got it up to 199.9). Although it might not be the best family car for those with two kids still in booster seats and one kid sitting in between them, I'm still happy with my purchase. The weight sensor in the trunk is a little odd if you use your backpack as your office and the seats are full, but it's a minor issue.

The car had some great features such as comfortable seats, lane assist, and smart cruise control. However, we experienced some issues with the gas mileage, trunk space, and leather seats. Additionally, we encountered some warranty-related problems with the back deck and airbag. The radio and Apple CarPlay also had some glitches. Despite these challenges, we made the decision to part ways with the car after 9 months. Overall, we remain confident in our ability to make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing a vehicle.

I recently purchased this car and unfortunately, I'm not enjoying it as much as I had hoped. The stereo and information center are difficult to use and can be distracting since there are no buttons and the unit isn't aimed at the driver. Additionally, there seems to be a stability issue, especially when in EV mode on the highway, which causes the car to sway back and forth and requires constant correction. However, I have found that driving gently can result in good gas mileage, although it does take a bit longer to accelerate. I have also experienced some issues with the battery not fully charging. After two years, I have noticed that the oil filter housing is defective and can cause leaking. Despite these issues, I have found some solutions that have helped, such as installing a sway bar and front strut brace. Overall, I'm still working on finding ways to improve my experience with this car.

Leaving town? If you do, be aware that the 12V battery may die while you're away. When you start the car, all lights will flash and the horn will beep continuously. This was definitely unexpected. However, the Service Department can come out and charge your battery. They advise that a trickle charger is needed ($200) plus installation, and that you should plug the car in when you're away. They indicated that this is a common problem when the car is not continuously driven. Although this is not mentioned in their materials, they are happy to help. It's worth noting that this can cause the battery to wear down faster, which may lead to replacement sooner. If you're looking for a plug-in, this may be the car for you. However, if you're used to driving a Prius, you may find the mileage to be considerably lower. We made the switch and regret it. We're leaving town again soon, and we're not sure what to expect. Phase 2: We returned from our second trip and encountered the same problem. The car was towed to the dealer, and the battery was supposedly okay. The only remedy was a plug-in battery monitor, which would make resale quite difficult. It's hard to explain this to a prospective buyer. If you travel frequently, this may not be the car for you. However, if you're looking for a plug-in, it may be worth considering.

I am confident in my assessment that the car is very comfortable and drives very well. However, I am concerned about the poor MPG performance that I have been experiencing. Despite conducting extensive research before purchasing the car and being excited about the MPG performance claims, I have been getting a disappointing 28 MPG for the past 3 months. While I understand that fuel economy may decrease in the winter, I have never achieved more than 40 MPG since purchasing the car in September. As a Prius owner who routinely gets ~45-50 MPG, I know that this is not an issue with my driving technique. I have already spoken with Honda customer service and brought the car to the dealership for evaluation, but they were unable to find any issues. I am confident in my request for a fuel consumption test and hope that Honda will take this matter seriously and provide a satisfactory solution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.I strongly recommend bringing the car back in for 2 days so they can perform the same pump calculation that you have done. It is important to ensure that the MPG claims are accurate and that you are getting what you paid for in terms of hybrid fuel economy. Despite this issue, I find the car interior to be very nice and I like the rest of the vehicle.

I recently test drove a Hybrid at the dealer due to some great deals they had. I tried out the middle trim level and while it was nice, there were a few things that bothered me. Firstly, the vehicle seemed to vibrate more than I would have liked when the gas motor was running or when braking. I'm not sure if this was just an issue with that particular car or not. The blind spot camera was a cool feature, but it became a bit annoying as it would turn on every time I signaled a right turn, even when I was stopped at a light. However, one of the most frustrating things about the car was the lack of an actual volume knob for the stereo. While it does have steering wheel controls and a volume adjuster on the touch screen, there is a slight delay that can be quite irritating. Additionally, the touch screen controller didn't always adjust the volume as I expected it to. Despite these issues, the car is still quite nice. The sound quality is great, I appreciate the 2 screen implementation, and the instrumentation is well-designed. Furthermore, the straightforward trim levels make it easy to understand what you're getting for your money. Overall, I would rate it 3/5.
