2003 Pontiac Vibe problems
The Pontiac Vibe is a compact car that was sold by Pontiac from 2002 to 2010. It was jointly developed by General Motors along with Toyota, which manufactured the mechanically similar Toyota Matrix. Manufactured by the Toyota-GM joint venture NUMMI in Fremont, California, the Vibe succeeded the Chevrolet Prizm in production at NUMMI and like the Prizm, it was derived from the Toyota Corolla, making it the last of the GM and Toyota developed S-body cars.
From 2002 to 2004, a rebadged right-hand drive variant of the Vibe was exported as the Toyota Voltz to the Japanese domestic market. The Voltz did not sell well in Japan and was discontinued after two model years.
Production of the Vibe ended in 2009 with the discontinuation of the Pontiac brand and the closing of NUMMI under the General Motors Chapter 11 reorganization. Its twin, the Toyota Matrix, was in production for another three years for the American market and four years for the Canadian market, as the Matrix was manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and was unaffected by NUMMI closing down operation.

Common 2003 Pontiac Vibe problems
Based on complaints from owners of the Pontiac Vibe 2003, common problems reported include:
- Bearing Noise:
Owners have reported tapping and clicking noises that get louder over time when the clutch is activated. This issue is often a sign of transmission problems and can be caused by manufacturing defects, poor lubrication, or contamination. Replacing the transmission may not always resolve the issue, as all transmissions used for this model have similar problems. - Transmission Failures:
The transmission in the 2003 Vibe tends to fail early and without warning. Even after replacement, the fix may not last long. This repair is costly, leading many owners to consider the vehicle not worth repairing, especially for older models. - Instrument Panel Not Working:
A relatively common issue is the instrument panel failing to work, which includes critical indicators like speed and fuel levels. This can occur suddenly without warning, potentially leading to unsafe driving situations due to a lack of essential information for the driver. - Indicator Lights Failures:
Individual indicator lights may fail to come on when needed, causing issues with monitoring the vehicle's status. This problem can be challenging to fix, especially if the source of the issue is not easily identifiable, potentially leading to maintenance or repair codes being missed. - Engine Failure:
The Pontiac Vibe 2003 is known for early engine failures that can be unpredictable and sudden. Good maintenance practices may not prevent these failures, but they can help protect other vehicle systems. Engine repairs are expensive, prompting some owners to consider replacing the vehicle instead. - Difficult to Control Speed:
Some users have reported difficulty controlling the speed of the Pontiac Vibe, with acceleration sometimes being more or less than intended. This issue, likely a result of engine and transmission problems, can lead to unpredictable driving experiences and potentially dangerous situations on the road.
These problems highlight the challenges faced by owners of the Pontiac Vibe 2003, ranging from transmission and engine issues to instrumental failures that can impact the overall safety and reliability of the vehicle.

- Summary: The 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe was manufactured by Toyota and is for all intent and purposes is a 2003 Toyota Matrix. The 2003-04 Pontiac Vibe should be included in the "Do not drive" advisory issued by Toyota 20 Jan 30th 2024. Only the body is different than the Toyota Matrix and everything internal is the same. Please do not let this model fall through the cracks. January 30, 2024, Toyota issued a "do not drive" advisory for certain 2003–2005 car models due to concerns about their Takata airbags: 2003–2004 Corolla 2003–2004 Corolla Matrix 2004–2005 RAV4 The company says the Corolla and Matrix models are under a separate recall because their airbags can be deployed without a crash. The Takata air bag inflators are at risk of exploding and hurling shrapnel. 2003 Pontiac Vibe recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 8 recalls for different components of the 2003 Pontiac Vibe.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles equipped with a front passenger air bag assembly replaced under a prior recall. The replacement air bag may not unfold as designed during inflation in high temperature conditions, possibly resulting in the air bag not inflating properly.
- Consequence: An air bag that does not inflate properly increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the passenger air bag module, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2020. Owners may contact Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. GM's number for this recall is N192278940.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2002-2005 Lexus SC and Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2005 Toyota Corolla and Tundra, and 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, or replace the air bag assembly that includes an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began January 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371, Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. Toyota's numbers for these recalls are J0A (Zone A Toyota), J0B (Zone B Toyota), J0C (Zone C Toyota), JLI (Zone A Lexus), JLJ (Zone B Lexus), and JLK (Zone C Lexus). - Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. - Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles and 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The supplemental restraint system (SRS) circuits are susceptible to internal shorting. The electrical short may create an abnormal current flow and increased heat which can damage the circuits. This could result in an inadvertent deployment of the front airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
- Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags or the seat belt pretensioners may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will re-notify their owners who have already had their vehicles repaired with a noise filter, but did not receive a new airbag control module, and General Motors will re-notify theirs. Dealers previously installed a supplemental harness containing an electrical filter between the airbag control module and its wire harness, free of charge. Dealers will replace the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on March 13, 2013. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for second notices. For more information, Toyota owners may call 1-800-331-4331 and Pontiac owners may call 1-800-620-7668.

Before the Pontiac Vibe was out on the market, I saw a report on Popular Mechanics, and I knew this was the car I was looking for my wife. It had all the features she needed. Although it was a totally new car, just knowing that it was basically a Toyota Corolla was enough for me. As soon as it was out, I ordered one and made the right choice!

I really enjoyed reading about your experience with this car! It sounds like it has been a great fit for you and your husband, especially with its spacious interior and impressive gas mileage. It's also reassuring to hear that the car has proven to be safe and reliable, even in a serious accident. Thank you for sharing your story, and best of luck finding a new Vibe!

I really like my car, but unfortunately there's an annoying rattle in my dashboard that's been bothering me. The dealership and Pontiac haven't been very helpful so far. I saw that robodog61 had the same issue, but he was able to get it fixed. He mentioned that the problem was resolved by the dealer after owning the car for 3 months. I'm not sure how to contact him to find out what was done, though.

My car always gets attention wherever I go, even a year after I bought it. People, sometimes even strangers, ask me how I like it, and I always tell them that I love it. The proof is in the ride. Everyone who has ridden in it agrees that the Vibe-GT rocks. It has tons of cargo space and excellent performance. Acceleration is better than most V-6 cars, although it really comes alive above 4000 RPM, with explosive acceleration hitting at 6000 (meaning you have to push it hard to really move). Handling is surprisingly good thanks to a tight suspension. The ride is quite smooth - I have yet to have a CD skip, even over railroad tracks.

Your car sounds amazing! Clocking over 120K in 10 years is impressive and it's great to hear that it's still going strong. It seems like it fits everything you need for your trips, from camping gear to kayaks on the roof. I'm glad to hear that it's been to so many places and still gets great gas mileage. It's also good to know that it performs well in all weather conditions, although it's important to have good all-weather tires. It's understandable that some odd problems are starting to happen, but it's great to hear that it's still the best car ever!

I had the pleasure of working for a firm that leased a variety of vehicles, one of which was the VIBE. When it was time for me to choose a new vehicle, I decided to give the Vibe a try since it appeared to be a mini SUV wagon. I must say, it was the best vehicle I have ever been issued. It was always reliable, sturdy, and surprisingly quick despite the underpowered engine (which should be a larger 4 or 6 cylinder). The only issue I encountered was starting from the line, as it lacked pep and required some distance to enter a busy, fast highway. However, when driving on the streets of NYC, I never had a problem. The only other issue I had was with the interior design, specifically the window opener locations, lack of rear seat heating, and sloppily designed air conditioning ports. Despite these minor issues, I highly recommend the Vibe to everyone.

I purchased this car used 3 months ago with 118,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, in the 3000 miles I have driven it, I have had to replace two catalytic converters and repair a window that was previously fixed in a makeshift manner. Additionally, the car is quite noisy and tends to rev up when it is cold outside until I have driven a few miles at higher speeds. While I am disappointed with my purchase and concerned about potential future issues, I am hopeful that with proper maintenance and care, I can improve its performance.

I went online to find the most reliable car within my price range and stumbled upon this one. Although I spent quite a bit on it as a used car, it was to be expected. I learned my lesson about buying used and am now taking the payments to avoid the hassle of things breaking down. I did have to replace the clutch for 1k and had a piston issue for 1.4k, but that's just the usual maintenance for a used car. It's not the fastest car out there, and I even had to slow down on hilly roads, but it gets the job done. This car is perfect for those who just need a car, plain and simple. It's not the nicest or most comfortable, but it's pretty reliable and has decent gas mileage. If you're looking for a car with personality or something that you'll enjoy driving, this might not be the one for you. However, if you need an affordable car that will get you from point A to point B, this is definitely worth considering. After all, it's a Toyota and you can't avoid used car problems with any car from 2003.

The 2003 Vibe has been in the shop twice a year for the past three years due to the engine light coming on, with the issue mostly being related to fuel emissions. Despite its appealing style and ride, the frequency of these trips to the shop is concerning, especially now that the warranty has expired. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend the 2003 Vibe.

Although the AWD Vibe is a spacious car with great air vents that fully close, it unfortunately falls short in terms of power and transmission. The lack of a manual transmission option for the AWD version exacerbates the issue, and the transmission itself feels like it slips when driving up long hills. Additionally, the car only gets about 22 MPG regardless of whether it's driven on the highway or in the city. Despite these drawbacks, the car is still a decent option overall.
