The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common Honda Accord hybrid problems

The Honda Accord Hybrid, like any other vehicle, has faced several issues that have been reported by owners over the years. One of the most significant problems is related to the fuel system, particularly in the 2017 model year. This issue is the worst category of problems for the Honda Accord Hybrid, with multiple complaints about poor fuel efficiency and low power.

Another common problem reported by Honda Accord Hybrid owners is related to the electrical system. Although the 2014 model year has the most overall complaints, the 2017 model year is considered worse due to factors such as higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage. The most reported problem for the 2014 model year is poor MPG, which is likely related to the electrical system issues.

In addition to these problems, there have been reports of issues with the air conditioning system in the Honda Accord Hybrid. One owner reported having to bring their car in six times in eight months due to the AC blowing warm air, indicating a possible defect in the AC condenser.

Furthermore, there have been concerns about the quality of the interior materials in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported issues with the fit and finish of the interior, including the use of cheap plastic materials and the lack of heated mirrors, which is considered a safety feature. Additionally, some features that were previously standard, such as HD Radio and satellite radio, are no longer included in some models, which has been a source of frustration for some owners.

Lastly, there have been reports of issues with the engine bay in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported noises coming from the engine bay, including a noticeable noise from the inverter and the sound of components moving around as if the engine mount or struts were worn out. These issues could indicate a problem with the engine mount or struts, which could lead to more significant problems down the line if not addressed.

In summary, the Honda Accord Hybrid has faced several issues over the years, including problems with the fuel system, electrical system, air conditioning, interior quality, and engine bay. While Honda has a reputation for reliability, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering purchasing a Honda Accord Hybrid.

Latest negative Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

  1. Guillermo Corwin 2025-05-26

    Vehicle year: 2017

Good performance overall. During the summer, the car achieved an average gas mileage of 45 MPG, which decreased to 39 MPG in the winter. Unfortunately, the front display panel stopped working around 42k, disabling important functions such as time, radio stations, gas mileage, reverse and side cameras, and Bluetooth. This has compromised the safety of the car. Despite this, Honda has refused to fix the issue, citing the expiration of the 36-month warranty. I am disappointed with this experience and it may influence my decision to purchase another Honda in the future.

  2. Merlin Kuphal 2025-04-07

    Vehicle year: 2015

Hello! If you're considering purchasing this car, please read my review. I've owned Honda Accords in the past and have been extremely happy with them, so when the hybrid came out, I was excited to get one. After waiting 9 months and driving 7,500 miles, I wanted to share my honest thoughts. While there are a few issues I've encountered, I still enjoy driving this car. Here are some things to keep in mind: ISSUE 1: The trunk rods which hold open the trunk snapped into multiple pieces after 4 months. By the 6th month, the second rod also snapped. The dealer did fix it for free, but not before questioning if I had done something to cause the issue. The mechanic who worked on the car informed me that this is the 3rd or 4th Accord Hybrid he's worked on where the rod had snapped. ISSUE 2: If you enjoy going to drive-in movies, you cannot turn off the running lights if you want to run the air conditioner or radio. This is a really poor design choice. ISSUE 3: If you like listening to local radio stations on long trips, you cannot change the radio station from the steering wheel. You have to do it manually, which is placed in an awkward location. You can only change radio stations for the preset channels. Another poor design choice. ISSUE 4: The rearview auto-dimming mirror has a slow dimmer, so you're hit with a bright light for 5-10 seconds. You're blinded until it's dimmed out and it reoccurs constantly. ISSUE 5: The USB charger in the front console is barely able to charge my Samsung Note 5. It's just not powerful enough or something is wrong. The dealer told me that this is how the hybrid USB chargers work. ISSUE 6: The driver's armrest does not slide forward like the previous Accords, so unless you have long arms or you're more than 6' 5I've driven my car for 7,500 miles (60% interstate & 40% city) and, being a conservative driver, I've managed to average 36 mpg. While the truck space is small, I was aware of this when I purchased the car. Unfortunately, there is no spare tire available for this model, and using the provided unit to fix a flat tire can damage the car rims, according to the dealer. I wanted to share my experience and provide a warning to others before they make the same mistake. Although this car let me down, I still love Honda cars. :-)

  3. Quentin Parker 2025-04-06

    Vehicle year: 2019

At 2000 miles, my 2019 Accord Hybrid Touring started making a loud reoccurring reverb noise at specific speeds. Despite my concerns, Honda has stated that this is an inherent characteristic of the vehicle and has no intended fix. However, after researching the issue, I have found that many other owners have reported similar complaints. It is important to be aware of this problem when considering purchasing this vehicle.

  4. Cody Abshire 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2015

I've been driving this car for three months now, covering 5000 miles in both highway and city conditions, and in good weather. I've noticed that the computer gas mileage for the 5000 miles on trip B is only 38.2mpg, and I've never gotten over 38 mpg when monitoring at each fill up. In fact, the mpg is as low as 35 mpg. Despite having the economy button on and driving very conservatively, I'm still only getting 38 mpg. This is far from the 50 mpg city and 47 mpg overall that was advertised. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed this and complained to them. If I had known this, I would have just purchased a non-hybrid Honda Accord, which would probably not be far off on mpg I'm actually getting with the hybrid. Additionally, when accelerating on any type of grade under 40 mph, the engine revs and the feeling is like a slipping transmission or clutch.

  5. Wilfrid Wisozk 2025-03-20

    Vehicle year: 2015

I recently purchased the new 2015 Accord Hybrid for its impressive fuel economy, which did not disappoint. However, I did experience some unexpected choppiness in the ride when the car's software switches between the electric and gas engines, particularly when driving at speeds over 40 MPH. During my original test drive, I only drove on the freeway for a short distance in heavy traffic, so I didn't notice this issue at the time. Unfortunately, the intermittent pausing and surging of the electric engine disengaging at higher speeds can be both annoying and disconcerting, resulting in a choppy ride. I took my car to the dealer service twice for this issue, but the first time I was simply advised to stop using the ECON mode for a smoother ride. The second time, I spoke with the service tech and was informed that this was normal operation for the vehicle. As a long-time Honda fan, I was disappointed with this response. However, I still believe that the Accord Hybrid is a great car, and I would recommend it to anyone who prioritizes fuel economy. It's important to be aware of this issue, but overall, I'm still happy with my purchase.

First of all, I'm glad to hear that the entertainment system sounds great. However, it seems that the DD player is not very useful other than for playing CDs, as it won't save anything. I understand that playing with a flash drive can be cumbersome, which is why I personally prefer using an iPod Nano - it's infinitely easier. While I'm disappointed to hear about your experience with the engineers at Honda, I hope that your next attempt to resolve the issue will be successful. On a positive note, I'm glad to hear that the car handles great and is reasonably quiet when not accelerating (although there is a pronounced whine). I understand that the mileage can be very temperature dependent, and that the heater is electric, which warms the cab but unfortunately does not provide any EV capabilities.

Happy 2 year anniversary to my 2017 Accord Hybrid Touring in Blue Sky (a real beauty)! I've driven about 43,000 miles in the past 2 years and I couldn't be more satisfied. This is my 5th Accord in a row and 3rd new one in a row, 1st Hybrid. I absolutely love the attractive interior and exterior, the comfortable leather seats, exceptional handling, and the side view camera that shows up on the dashboard screen when moving one lane to the right when using the turn signal. It gives a complete view of any blind spot, making driving safer. The AC and heat are also very good, and the Michelin tires have only worn about 25% (still have 8/32” left). The only downside was the infotainment system, especially voice activation, which was very unreliable. However, in the last month or so, it has pretty much cleared up. Now I'm very satisfied! I'd like to address 3 things that others have complained about: 1) Getting in and out is difficult and driving position is low. The solution is to raise the seat height, as far as it will go, using the middle seat adjustment bar on the left side of the seat. This also gives a better view of the road. Using the same bar, the butt part of the seat can be tilted forwards and backwards to optimize your seating position; 2) Stated Miles Per Gallon not accurate. Let's keep in mind one thing: The manufacturer does not set these ratings, the EPA does, and they do it for all makes and models. How they derive these ratings is unknown. I'm not defending American Honda on this but, as far as anyone knows, they simply take what the EPA provides and puts it on the window sticker. 3) Performance (acceleration). If you find this to be sluggish, simply hit the “Sport” mode button next to the shift lever, and your little Hybrid will take off like a performance sports car. This will cut down on fuel economy but for the short time that you need a burst it is well worth it.It's great to see you exploring the different modes of your vehicle! In Sport mode, you'll notice a significant difference in the way it handles. Enjoy the ride! 👋

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with the Honda Accord Hybrid-exl, Toyota Camry Hybrid SE, and Sonata Hybrid. After test driving all three, I found that the Honda and Toyota were the clear winners due to their superior driving feel. The Sonata felt too plush and disconnected from the road. However, I do want to note that the Sonata does have the best warranty in the industry, so if that is important to you, it may be worth considering. As for my personal experience with the Honda, I have driven up to 25000 miles with no mechanical or electrical issues. The vehicle has been rock solid in those two metrics. The only issue I have encountered is the extremely high road noise. Honda really missed the mark on noise isolation. During longer trips on rougher surfaces at high speeds, the noise is really intrusive. Moving to newer tires has helped mitigate it somewhat, but the noise levels are still high enough that having normal conversations is tough at higher speeds. Despite these issues, I am still satisfied with the ride, hybrid mileage, and overall packaging of the car. I did experience a rattle coming from the HUD display and a quiet buzz from the subwoofer mounting in the rear deck, but I plan to get these checked by the service team to get them fixed. I am disappointed that these issues are occurring on the top trim of the car, but I am not docking a star from my review. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts! After paying high luxury car servicing costs for a while, I wanted to save fuel while still having a comfortable car. During my test drives, I noticed that the Toyota has a great new look, while the Honda has a chiseled and refined exterior. However, I don't base my purchases on looks alone. The Toyota Camry is quieter and more refined at slower speeds, but the Honda Accord has better performance and driving dynamics. The Accord gets great mileage and has more features than a similarly spec'd Toyota model. I recently purchased a fully loaded Honda hybrid touring and have been using it for my daily commute and grocery runs. So far, I'm averaging around 43mpg and have seen it go up to close to 55mpg on some drives. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend the Honda to anyone looking for a fuel-efficient and comfortable car.I can see how driving habits can really help improve your miles per gallon by 5-10 mpg. The seats are very comfortable and adjust automatically according to the key fob number. That feature alone is worth picking this one up, as you won't have to adjust the seats when you climb in if your household has two drivers. The 10-speaker sound system is great, and the entertainment center is decently sized and well laid out. The HUD is pretty cool and not distracting, and the safety features are excellent, especially the collision visual alerts at slow speed when parking in tighter spots. The rearview camera works well, and when there is cross traffic, there is a visual indication of the direction the vehicle is approaching from. The cabin is not noiseless like a Mercedes, but it is par for the course, especially if you have music on. The steering wheel feels chunky and very sporty, and the heated and vented seats should help during seasonal temperature changes. The Qi charger for phones works well, and so does Carplay. This car has more than enough room and actually feels as big as an e350. It's almost the perfect family sedan that caters to everyone. If you are in the market for an excellent upscale hybrid sedan, the Accord is the way to go.

After driving about 2,000 miles, I would like to give you an accurate review of the 2014 Accord Hybrid. First and foremost, this car is not a sports car. However, when you take off the 'econ' mode and hit the gas, this car moves great. It has very responsive handling and braking. But, this car is best driven conservatively and casually, picture Low Rider playing in the background while you are out cruising. The reward is a car that is very comfortable, easy to drive, and has insane gas mileage. The 47/50 ratings are wrong - they are low. We regularly drive about a 50/50 mix and get an average of 52-55 - maybe warmer weather helps some. We can go 800 miles per tank. It is the same quality Accord as always with high mpg.

I wasn't originally planning on purchasing an Accord Hybrid sedan. I was deciding between a 2018 Sport or EX, and casually inquired about the price of a Hybrid. To my surprise, a 2017 EX-L Hybrid was only $26,500, which is about the same as a new Sport and $750 less than a new EX. This price is at least $6000 off the sticker price, making it a deal too good to pass up. I have owned a 2007 Civic Hybrid and a 2014 Toyota Prius, so hybrids are not new to me. I bought the car without too much analysis up-front, but have studied it more after buying it two weeks ago and putting about 900 miles on it. From a gas-electric analysis, the transition between electric and gas motors is seamless. You can tell by sound which motors are invoked, but the car doesn't jerk when switching modes. Other than the information display indicating which motor(s) are active, you might not even know. I tested the car through one tank without Eco Mode on and got about 45 mpg in mixed driving. Within Eco Mode on, I'm getting 48 or better in cool to cold weather. The digital dash displays take a little training to understand what all the icons and bar indicators mean, but that plays into a hybrid owner's love of such a car (more on this in a minute). This redesigned hybrid for 2017 has a combined 212 horsepower, and combined with a midsize car, you won't believe you can get the stated 48/47 mpg until you see it for yourself. Those Honda engineers have really outdone themselves. The Sport mode is extra peppy and a nice treat for revving the engine up for acceleration. The eCVT transmission still doesn't jerk between gear ratios for a really smooth ride. I traded in a 2015 Accord EX for this hybrid and can tell a definite improvement in the suspension and steering between this 2017 and my 2015. The leather interior is black, which is my first ever black interior. I'm loving the heated seats in cold weather.I'm not sure how comfortable the seats will be in the summer when the cabin gets hot after sitting in the sun for a while, but the ventilation holes might help. I'll report back on the summer comfort of the black leather seats at a later date. The dual video screens take some getting used to, but the EX-L has Apple Play integration which I love. However, it can be a bit finicky to work with. I've had a podcast app go quiet through the system after shutting the car off and trying to resume the same podcast later after reconnecting the phone. The navigation of the video screen is not intuitive, but you will learn the main menu paths pretty quickly. I know which options I'll be picking most often, so the lack of intuitiveness is not a show stopper. The touch volume control is not preferred over a physical knob, but I can live with it and the steering controls. The XM radio is a welcome addition, but I'm still deciding if I'll continue to subscribe after the trial. With the 2017 hybrid, you lose the fold-down seat capability compared to the gas Accord, so that's a small drawback. The car feels very solid and well-built. Time will tell how the mechanicals hold up over the long haul, but I have a good feeling that it will be reliable. Some other reviewers have complained about Hybrid reliability and have had many issues with the systems. With my two previous hybrids, I did not ever have mechanical failures of the hybrid technology or gas engine components. I will update my experience with the car as I drive it further. The Eco Score on the MIDI is nice, but a little hard to figure out until you read the owner's manual; it is both a current drive and lifetime score of hybrid efficiency. As far as all the information provided for gas mileage rankings and driver information, I'll say that I'm the perfect type of owner for a hybrid because I like playing the game of getting the best possible gas mileage in a car.I think a lot of hybrid owners enjoy the challenge of driving for ideal gas mileage with every tankful. It's like a game, and the numerous gauges and measures keep the driver informed of their success in squeezing every drop out of the gas tank. With a range of around 700 miles on a tank of gas, you'll be spending a lot less time at the gas pump with this car. I am very happy with my impulse purchase! Update December 2019: After two years of ownership and 25,000 miles, I am still just as happy with this car as the day I bought it. There have been no mechanical issues, and the gas mileage averages 42 mpg in winter and 53 mpg in summer. The gas range on a tank is 650-725 miles, although I could squeeze a little more out if I tried. I love the amenities like Apple Car Play and two video screens for info. The 2020 models look great and have a full trunk, while the only real drawback of the 2017 model is its small trunk and lack of fold-down seats.
