The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common Honda Accord hybrid problems

The Honda Accord Hybrid, like any other vehicle, has faced several issues that have been reported by owners over the years. One of the most significant problems is related to the fuel system, particularly in the 2017 model year. This issue is the worst category of problems for the Honda Accord Hybrid, with multiple complaints about poor fuel efficiency and low power.

Another common problem reported by Honda Accord Hybrid owners is related to the electrical system. Although the 2014 model year has the most overall complaints, the 2017 model year is considered worse due to factors such as higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage. The most reported problem for the 2014 model year is poor MPG, which is likely related to the electrical system issues.

In addition to these problems, there have been reports of issues with the air conditioning system in the Honda Accord Hybrid. One owner reported having to bring their car in six times in eight months due to the AC blowing warm air, indicating a possible defect in the AC condenser.

Furthermore, there have been concerns about the quality of the interior materials in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported issues with the fit and finish of the interior, including the use of cheap plastic materials and the lack of heated mirrors, which is considered a safety feature. Additionally, some features that were previously standard, such as HD Radio and satellite radio, are no longer included in some models, which has been a source of frustration for some owners.

Lastly, there have been reports of issues with the engine bay in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported noises coming from the engine bay, including a noticeable noise from the inverter and the sound of components moving around as if the engine mount or struts were worn out. These issues could indicate a problem with the engine mount or struts, which could lead to more significant problems down the line if not addressed.

In summary, the Honda Accord Hybrid has faced several issues over the years, including problems with the fuel system, electrical system, air conditioning, interior quality, and engine bay. While Honda has a reputation for reliability, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering purchasing a Honda Accord Hybrid.

Latest negative Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

  1. Jules Hills 2025-06-20

    Vehicle year: 2022

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it in June 2022 with only 11 miles on it and I absolutely love it! However, it's been in the shop for the second time now. They say it's because of the heat, but I'm not quite convinced. While driving, all the lights come on and today the car just wouldn't start. Have you ever experienced anything like this?

  2. Kiel Huels 2025-06-16

    Vehicle year: 2019

Firstly, I must say that this is an excellent car. However, like others, I would not have purchased this hybrid if I was only going to get between 34-37 MPG instead of the advertised 48/48, which was the main reason I chose this specific vehicle.

  3. Guillermo Corwin 2025-05-26

    Vehicle year: 2017

Good performance overall. During the summer, the car achieved an average gas mileage of 45 MPG, which decreased to 39 MPG in the winter. Unfortunately, the front display panel stopped working around 42k, disabling important functions such as time, radio stations, gas mileage, reverse and side cameras, and Bluetooth. This has compromised the safety of the car. Despite this, Honda has refused to fix the issue, citing the expiration of the 36-month warranty. I am disappointed with this experience and it may influence my decision to purchase another Honda in the future.

  4. Merlin Kuphal 2025-04-07

    Vehicle year: 2015

Hello! If you're considering purchasing this car, please read my review. I've owned Honda Accords in the past and have been extremely happy with them, so when the hybrid came out, I was excited to get one. After waiting 9 months and driving 7,500 miles, I wanted to share my honest thoughts. While there are a few issues I've encountered, I still enjoy driving this car. Here are some things to keep in mind: ISSUE 1: The trunk rods which hold open the trunk snapped into multiple pieces after 4 months. By the 6th month, the second rod also snapped. The dealer did fix it for free, but not before questioning if I had done something to cause the issue. The mechanic who worked on the car informed me that this is the 3rd or 4th Accord Hybrid he's worked on where the rod had snapped. ISSUE 2: If you enjoy going to drive-in movies, you cannot turn off the running lights if you want to run the air conditioner or radio. This is a really poor design choice. ISSUE 3: If you like listening to local radio stations on long trips, you cannot change the radio station from the steering wheel. You have to do it manually, which is placed in an awkward location. You can only change radio stations for the preset channels. Another poor design choice. ISSUE 4: The rearview auto-dimming mirror has a slow dimmer, so you're hit with a bright light for 5-10 seconds. You're blinded until it's dimmed out and it reoccurs constantly. ISSUE 5: The USB charger in the front console is barely able to charge my Samsung Note 5. It's just not powerful enough or something is wrong. The dealer told me that this is how the hybrid USB chargers work. ISSUE 6: The driver's armrest does not slide forward like the previous Accords, so unless you have long arms or you're more than 6' 5I've driven my car for 7,500 miles (60% interstate & 40% city) and, being a conservative driver, I've managed to average 36 mpg. While the truck space is small, I was aware of this when I purchased the car. Unfortunately, there is no spare tire available for this model, and using the provided unit to fix a flat tire can damage the car rims, according to the dealer. I wanted to share my experience and provide a warning to others before they make the same mistake. Although this car let me down, I still love Honda cars. :-)

  5. Quentin Parker 2025-04-06

    Vehicle year: 2019

At 2000 miles, my 2019 Accord Hybrid Touring started making a loud reoccurring reverb noise at specific speeds. Despite my concerns, Honda has stated that this is an inherent characteristic of the vehicle and has no intended fix. However, after researching the issue, I have found that many other owners have reported similar complaints. It is important to be aware of this problem when considering purchasing this vehicle.

Latest positive Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

  1. Willard Murazik 2025-06-14

    Vehicle year: 2022

I have loved my Honda Accord Hybrid until I had an unfortunate incident while parking it after coming off the highway. The motor suddenly revved and the car hit a cement pole. As someone who has driven the Accord Hybrid, you know that the motor is usually quiet when you are driving at less than 1 mph. Although I had proper mats, they were not from the factory. I worked with Honda America for over 3 months to follow their protocol and send out an engineer to inspect the car and determine the cause of the inadvertent acceleration. Unfortunately, the assigned customer service representative was unresponsive during mediation. Despite this, I still believe it is a great car, but it is important to be aware of potential incidents like this.

  2. Mortimer Wisozk 2025-06-12

We have owned many types of cars over the years, including VW, Mazda, Suzuki, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Chrysler, Dodge, and Porsche (as well as two other Honda's), but this 2017 Honda Accord EX-L Hybrid is one of the best. The exterior and interior are stylish, and the fit and finish are impressive. The leather seats are comfortable and very easy to adjust, and we use the two pre-set positions. While the front seats are roomy, the rear seats are quite large for a mid-size car. Visibility is excellent all around, and the trunk is still large enough even with the battery. The car is well-built and handles the road well. Since we keep our car purchases for a long time, the hybrid low fuel use was an important point. But, the hybrid engine system still has plenty of power to merge, climb hills, and generally move the car quickly with great acceleration. I have to get used to how quiet the car is while in Electric Vehicle mode, and twice I have forgotten to turn it off after parking! When starting the car (especially noticeable in the garage), it makes this cool Star Trek-like sound while in the electric mode. The Honda Sensing safety system works well but needs a few technology improvements, which will probably occur as the technology evolves. I already found these features to be a great safety help. The info/entertainment system could be easier to use, and I understand the new 2018 model has been improved. My wife loathes car dealers, so I do the shopping and test driving. I told her she needed to drive the new car, and she said, 'if you like it, then I will.' I brought it home, and she loves the car. The folks at Smail Honda in Greensburg, PA were extremely helpful, and I got an excellent price at almost $7,000 off sticker. We are two drivers with three cars (the Porsche will go into storage for the winter soon), so we have only put on 600 miles since purchase one month ago, but so far, it's a great car. Update - the car is now three years old and has 26,000 miles on it.Absolutely no problems with the car. It's been very comfortable for both around town driving and multi-state trips. We've had the car for 3 years and 7 months now, but with only 31,000 miles on it due to the pandemic. However, we did take it to Florida (from PA) in February and it drove extremely well. We've had no problems with this car even after 5 years and 44,000 miles. I get the oil changed each year when state inspected & last year I purchased a new set of tires because the original set did not pass inspection. I did receive a small refund from Michelin because the tires wore out early, probably due to the poor roads and hills here in western PA. We also get about 40 MPG, which is better than expected, probably again due to the hills etc.... I would definitely purchase this car again. The car is now 6 years and one month old (purchased October 2017) and only has 51,500 miles because we are both now retired and it sits in the garage some days. It still looks good and rides/drives great. We plan to keep it.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my vehicle. I live in Atlanta Metro and drive 80+ miles every day. I've noticed that some people have mentioned not getting the 48/48/48 that's advertised. However, I'm here to tell you that 48 mpg is not only realistic, but it happens for me every single day! There are a few things to keep in mind though. I don't excessively speed and I don't floor it at take off. I keep the vehicle at 73 or under on the interstate and ramp up my speed off the line, which helps me achieve this MPG. In fact, on short trips to the store, I'm getting an average of 54-55 mpg. For city stop and go driving, this vehicle meets expectations. The interior is clean, simple, and to the point. The infotainment system operates smoothly and without any hiccups. I really enjoy the benefits of the lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience!

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with this car's MPG rating. From my personal experience, I've noticed that the car takes about 3-4 miles to warm up and reach its optimal efficiency. If you have a short commute, you may not be able to obtain the full EPA MPG rating. However, if you drive less, your MPG may suffer. For my 12-mile commute, I usually get around 30MPG for the first 4-5 miles, but then it quickly builds up to 45-50 MPG. On longer trips, I can easily get above 50 MPG while driving 70-75 MPH. Overall, I find the build quality of the car to be quite good, and it's comfortable, roomy, and quiet. The only issue I have is with the steering, which I find to be overly soft and not very informative. However, once I adjusted to it, the rest of the car is just fine. I really enjoy driving it!

First of all, I'm glad to hear that the entertainment system sounds great. However, it seems that the DD player is not very useful other than for playing CDs, as it won't save anything. I understand that playing with a flash drive can be cumbersome, which is why I personally prefer using an iPod Nano - it's infinitely easier. While I'm disappointed to hear about your experience with the engineers at Honda, I hope that your next attempt to resolve the issue will be successful. On a positive note, I'm glad to hear that the car handles great and is reasonably quiet when not accelerating (although there is a pronounced whine). I understand that the mileage can be very temperature dependent, and that the heater is electric, which warms the cab but unfortunately does not provide any EV capabilities.
