The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common Honda Accord hybrid problems

The Honda Accord Hybrid, like any other vehicle, has faced several issues that have been reported by owners over the years. One of the most significant problems is related to the fuel system, particularly in the 2017 model year. This issue is the worst category of problems for the Honda Accord Hybrid, with multiple complaints about poor fuel efficiency and low power.

Another common problem reported by Honda Accord Hybrid owners is related to the electrical system. Although the 2014 model year has the most overall complaints, the 2017 model year is considered worse due to factors such as higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage. The most reported problem for the 2014 model year is poor MPG, which is likely related to the electrical system issues.

In addition to these problems, there have been reports of issues with the air conditioning system in the Honda Accord Hybrid. One owner reported having to bring their car in six times in eight months due to the AC blowing warm air, indicating a possible defect in the AC condenser.

Furthermore, there have been concerns about the quality of the interior materials in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported issues with the fit and finish of the interior, including the use of cheap plastic materials and the lack of heated mirrors, which is considered a safety feature. Additionally, some features that were previously standard, such as HD Radio and satellite radio, are no longer included in some models, which has been a source of frustration for some owners.

Lastly, there have been reports of issues with the engine bay in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported noises coming from the engine bay, including a noticeable noise from the inverter and the sound of components moving around as if the engine mount or struts were worn out. These issues could indicate a problem with the engine mount or struts, which could lead to more significant problems down the line if not addressed.

In summary, the Honda Accord Hybrid has faced several issues over the years, including problems with the fuel system, electrical system, air conditioning, interior quality, and engine bay. While Honda has a reputation for reliability, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering purchasing a Honda Accord Hybrid.

Latest negative Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

  1. Freddy Brekke 2025-10-24

    Vehicle year: 2015

I have owned this car for over 2 years now. Recently, I found out that it does not have a spare tire and has been nothing but trouble all this time, and I am still facing issues. In the first 60 days, the vehicle abruptly stopped on the road twice with multiple error messages related to battery overheating and engine overheating. On both occasions, the dealership could not offer much resolution. During an oil change exercise, the software was patched, and the issue went away. The gas mileage has been a bit of a concern as well. Occasionally, my vehicle has given me 43+ mileage in the first 6 months, but it started dropping to 40 miles. However, since my oil change and a couple of filter change services, the mileage has dropped to 35-36 miles/gallon. I have discussed this with the dealership, but there has been very little resolution. The ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) & FCW (Forward Collision Warning) features have also been malfunctioning based on 'Radar obstruction' on multiple occasions in the last 12 months. In the last 10 days, they have stopped working, including the disabling of regular cruise control operations. This has made my long drive to work a manual and exhausting effort. The dealership that inspected has advised of expensive diagnostics and recalibration, which I am not sure if I truly should pay for. Overall, though I love Honda and owned a Civic for 16 years that ran trouble-free for ~200K miles, I would highly discourage anyone looking to buy a Honda Hybrid car based on my above experience.

  2. Tavares Larkin 2025-10-24

    Vehicle year: 2022

The car itself is great. The Touring model has a great ride, tons of features, and is very comfortable. However, it's important to note that the claimed MPG and real-world MPG may differ significantly. I've been averaging 34 mpg while driving the speed limit and accelerating slowly. It seems unlikely that anyone could achieve the claimed MPG regardless of their driving style or habits.

  3. Webster Purdy 2025-10-23

    Vehicle year: 2022

The car's AC has failed multiple times in a short period, despite the dealership replacing the leaking AC condenser twice. The dealer has acknowledged that the part was not made according to manufacturing specs. As a Honda enthusiast, I am disappointed that such a problem has not been resolved. I am considering returning the car as a 'Lemon' due to this issue.

  4. Franco Witting 2025-10-17

    Vehicle year: 2020

After driving several hundred miles, I took my car in for service to investigate why the fuel mileage was lower than expected. Honda service informed me that no error codes were showing. However, I was expecting a road mileage of about 47 mpg. Despite driving cautiously, the best on-road mileage I have obtained is 38 mpg.

  5. Reagan Labadie 2025-10-15

    Vehicle year: 2017

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Hybrid Touring that I bought in September 2016. I opted for the Hybrid model due to my long daily commute (~100 mi each way) and I have to say, it has been a great choice. The car has been 100% reliable and makes for a comfortable place to spend 1.5 hours each morning and afternoon. I especially love the Apple Carplay and the super comfortable driver's seat. Although the radio sound quality is not great, the car is super quiet at speed and relatively stable on the highway. Handling is typical Accord, and acceleration is surprisingly good (at least with the Sport mode engaged). However, I did notice a pretty big delay in power being delivered once you stop on the accelerator in the normal drive mode. The biggest disappointment for me has been the mileage on the highway. In town, it is easy to meet or exceed EPA mileage estimates, but I have not been able to even come close to the EPA numbers on the highway at normal speeds. Despite this, I regularly see mileage around 50MPG give or take in town. As far as highway mileage is concerned, my daily commute is relatively flat but the car does not like real-world highway speeds and is also very sensitive to outside air temperatures. After more than 60K of driving, my mileage (95% highway) in warm/hot weather has been averaging around 42 MPG. In cold weather, it is even worse and ends up closer to 37 MPG. Like any Li-ion battery-powered vehicle, cold weather seems to really sap capacity from the battery and results in a big hit on mileage. Other than the mileage, I have been a bit disappointed with the small and ugly (17The fuel capacity of this car is actually well over 16 gallons. I have found that I can top off my tank with more than 16 gallons of gas even when the tank is not totally empty. This has helped me to keep my overall range up despite the disappointing highway mileage. Overall, it's a super reliable and super comfortable car that delivers fantastic city mileage in a package that is just as easy to live with as a non-hybrid Accord. I've now sold the Accord and replaced it with a Tesla Model 3 Performance which has been a great step up after getting used to many of the nuances of EV driving with the Accord.

  1. Jerod Erdman 2025-11-11

    Vehicle year: 2017

To get the best MPG out of this car, simply drive it like any other car. I've been averaging 46.5 MPG over the first 2300 miles according to the computer, but based on my gas fill ups, I'm getting 48.0 MPG driving around Orange County with a 70/30 highway/city mix. During my 60 mile daily commute, I've seen a best of ~63 MPG in slow I-5 traffic and a worst of 41 MPG driving on the 133/241 toll roads through the mountains, but low 50s are very common. If driven at 55-60 mph over mostly flat, smooth roads, it can average ~60 MPG. However, bumpy/rough roads seem to lower the mileage significantly. It's worth noting that ECON mode actually lowers MPG. The power delivery is strong and linear, and the car is very responsive (especially in Sport mode). Additionally, the car is very quiet on the highway (except when going uphill) with hardly any wind/tire noise. The handling is crisp, nimble, and secure for my driving style, and the ride is comfortable but slightly on the stiff side - the chassis has a solid, well-integrated feel. The braking feels a tiny bit weaker than my excellent 2016 CR-V but is still very normal. To maximize engine efficiency, Honda seems to have cleverly programmed it to rev the engine up/down constantly instead of keeping it at a steady light load (which is bad for efficiency). Whenever the engine runs, it's mostly under higher loads and wider throttle - any excess energy is stored in the battery for later use when cruising. They also smartly use battery power to cruise rather than accelerate - that way, the battery energy logs more miles. Therefore, to maximize MPG, I accelerate to cruising speed quickly using the engine and then stay in EV while cruising. I've seen better MPG if I climb uphill stretches briskly, spending the battery, and then coast downhill to recover the energy. The AC controls can be frustrating as they lack knobs or touch bumps, which means you have to take your eyes off the road to set the fan speed or vent direction. Unfortunately, this design decision by Honda's engineers is inconsiderate. Additionally, the vent direction control display scrolls from right to left as you keep pressing the button, which can be counterintuitive. However, this is my only negative experience so far. On the bright side, I am very happy with this car. Also, the trip computer consistently underestimates MPG by ~1.3, which was pleasantly surprising.

This car is really attractive and rides well. Everything operates as expected, but the gas mileage is a bit of a disappointment. I've read many reviews and the 'real world' mileage is usually between 37 to 42. While a few claim to get 48 to 50, they are either fanatics at coasting or not accurate. I've tried everything I can think of, watched YouTube and the internet, and tried different types of driving, but I can't get over 42, mostly 37-39. I wish they would promote the car based on its overall engineering because it is excellent, but not pretend that you are going to get 48 mpg. Additionally, the sensors in the front only warn you of corner bumper objects, not objects in the middle. In other words, if there is a post or similar object in the middle of the front of the car, there is NO warning and you are going to damage the front of the car. However, the rear backup warning system is excellent in the width of its spread and warning, and that leads you to expect the same for the front, but that is not correct. The passenger seat only goes forward and back, not up or down, which means the passenger is usually lower than the driver. Both seat adjustments should be equal. I think the later year may have changed that. Also, the outside mirrors do not adjust with the driver. So the steering wheel and seats adjust, but then you have to sit there and adjust the outside and rear mirrors. You can open all windows with the remote as you approach the car, but you can't close them that way. I have the most expensive Accord, and while it's a slight disappointment in small ways, overall it's a great car.

I work with my car doing share rides for Lyft and Uber. I drive at least 10 hours a day, 5-6 days per week, and I only fill the tank once a week. It's a great value that allows me to keep more of my money in my pocket, not the gas tank.

Congratulations on your new 2022 base Accord! It's great to hear that you've been enjoying it so much. With gas mileage ranging from 47 to 53 mpg, and even better mileage when using the battery only option for local rides, it sounds like you're getting the most out of your vehicle. It's also wonderful to hear that there is plenty of leg room for everyone, including those in the back seat, and that the ride quality is very nice. Although it's a shame that Honda doesn't offer spare tires as standard equipment, it's great to hear that the base model has plenty of luxury for your needs. As a loyal Honda customer for the past 25 years, it's fantastic to hear that they keep getting better. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

Our new 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid has a very sleek, modern, and sporty look. It has plenty of room in both the front and back seats, as well as a very large trunk. Reports suggest that it gets nearly 50 MPG in both the city and on the highway, which is awesome fuel economy in my eyes. The Touring trim level has all the bells and whistles, including remote start, heads up display, lane keeping assistance, and Apple/Android Car Play. There are too many features to name, and I'm still discovering more. The Hybrid emits a pleasant humming noise when in all-electric mode, which I've been told is to assist people who are blind in hearing the car while it's otherwise quietly approaching them for safety purposes. I was dead set against getting another silver-colored car, but the Lunar Silver has a slightly darker and bluer aspect to it than most silver cars, making it a much more pleasant and appealing shade of silver. I've only owned this car for about 10 days, but I absolutely love it so far. I plan on keeping it for a long, long time.
