The Honda Accord (Japanese: ホンダ・アコード, Hepburn: Honda Akōdo, /əˈkɔːrd/), also known as the Honda Inspire (Japanese: ホンダ・インスパイア, Hepburn: Honda Insupaia) in Japan and China for certain generations, is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1976, best known for its four-door sedan variant, which has been one of the best-selling cars in the United States since 1989. The Accord nameplate has been applied to a variety of vehicles worldwide, including coupes, station wagons, hatchbacks and a Honda Crosstour crossover.

Since its initiation, Honda has offered several different car body styles and versions of the Accord, and often vehicles marketed under the Accord nameplate concurrently in different regions differ quite substantially. It debuted in 1976, as a compact hatchback, though this style only lasted through 1989, as the lineup was expanded to include a sedan, coupe, and wagon. By the sixth-generation Accord at the end of the 1990s, it evolved into an intermediate vehicle, with one basic platform but with different bodies and proportions to increase its competitiveness against its rivals in different international markets. For the eighth-generation Accord released for the North American market in 2007, Honda had again chosen to move the model further upscale and increase its size. This pushed the Accord sedan from the upper limit of what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) defines as a mid-size car to just above the lower limit of a full-size car, with the coupe still rated as a mid-size car. In 2012, the ninth-generation Accord sedan, with smaller exterior dimensions, was once again classified as a mid-size car at 119 cubic feet (3.4 m3), falling just shy of the "Large Car" classification. However, the tenth-generation Accord sedan, with similar exterior dimensions, returned to full-size car status with its combined interior space of 123 cubic feet (3.5 m3); the coupe was discontinued in 2017.

In 1982, the Accord became the first car from a Japanese manufacturer to be produced in the United States when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant. The Accord has achieved considerable success, especially in the United States, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for sixteen years (1982–97), topping its class in sales in 1991 and 2001, with around ten million vehicles sold. Numerous road tests, past and present, rate the Accord as one of the world's most reliable vehicles. The Accord has been on the Car and Driver 10Best list a record 38 times.

In 1989, the Accord was the first vehicle sold under an import brand to become the best-selling car in the United States. As of 2020, the Accord has sold more than 18 million units.

Common Honda Accord hybrid problems

The Honda Accord Hybrid, like any other vehicle, has faced several issues that have been reported by owners over the years. One of the most significant problems is related to the fuel system, particularly in the 2017 model year. This issue is the worst category of problems for the Honda Accord Hybrid, with multiple complaints about poor fuel efficiency and low power.

Another common problem reported by Honda Accord Hybrid owners is related to the electrical system. Although the 2014 model year has the most overall complaints, the 2017 model year is considered worse due to factors such as higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage. The most reported problem for the 2014 model year is poor MPG, which is likely related to the electrical system issues.

In addition to these problems, there have been reports of issues with the air conditioning system in the Honda Accord Hybrid. One owner reported having to bring their car in six times in eight months due to the AC blowing warm air, indicating a possible defect in the AC condenser.

Furthermore, there have been concerns about the quality of the interior materials in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported issues with the fit and finish of the interior, including the use of cheap plastic materials and the lack of heated mirrors, which is considered a safety feature. Additionally, some features that were previously standard, such as HD Radio and satellite radio, are no longer included in some models, which has been a source of frustration for some owners.

Lastly, there have been reports of issues with the engine bay in the Honda Accord Hybrid. Some owners have reported noises coming from the engine bay, including a noticeable noise from the inverter and the sound of components moving around as if the engine mount or struts were worn out. These issues could indicate a problem with the engine mount or struts, which could lead to more significant problems down the line if not addressed.

In summary, the Honda Accord Hybrid has faced several issues over the years, including problems with the fuel system, electrical system, air conditioning, interior quality, and engine bay. While Honda has a reputation for reliability, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues when considering purchasing a Honda Accord Hybrid.

Latest negative Honda Accord hybrid car reviews

  1. Cody Abshire 2025-03-23

    Vehicle year: 2015

I've been driving this car for three months now, covering 5000 miles in both highway and city conditions, and in good weather. I've noticed that the computer gas mileage for the 5000 miles on trip B is only 38.2mpg, and I've never gotten over 38 mpg when monitoring at each fill up. In fact, the mpg is as low as 35 mpg. Despite having the economy button on and driving very conservatively, I'm still only getting 38 mpg. This is far from the 50 mpg city and 47 mpg overall that was advertised. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has noticed this and complained to them. If I had known this, I would have just purchased a non-hybrid Honda Accord, which would probably not be far off on mpg I'm actually getting with the hybrid. Additionally, when accelerating on any type of grade under 40 mph, the engine revs and the feeling is like a slipping transmission or clutch.

  2. Wilfrid Wisozk 2025-03-20

    Vehicle year: 2015

I recently purchased the new 2015 Accord Hybrid for its impressive fuel economy, which did not disappoint. However, I did experience some unexpected choppiness in the ride when the car's software switches between the electric and gas engines, particularly when driving at speeds over 40 MPH. During my original test drive, I only drove on the freeway for a short distance in heavy traffic, so I didn't notice this issue at the time. Unfortunately, the intermittent pausing and surging of the electric engine disengaging at higher speeds can be both annoying and disconcerting, resulting in a choppy ride. I took my car to the dealer service twice for this issue, but the first time I was simply advised to stop using the ECON mode for a smoother ride. The second time, I spoke with the service tech and was informed that this was normal operation for the vehicle. As a long-time Honda fan, I was disappointed with this response. However, I still believe that the Accord Hybrid is a great car, and I would recommend it to anyone who prioritizes fuel economy. It's important to be aware of this issue, but overall, I'm still happy with my purchase.

  3. Elbert Altenwerth 2025-03-19

    Vehicle year: 2015

We purchased this car two weeks ago and so far, we are very happy with it. The fuel economy is around 42mpg, mostly city driving, which is great. The fit and finish of the car is pretty darn good for the money. It's good looking and not a Prius, but still has great mpg performance. The only disappointments so far are that the passenger side front seat does not have the same adjustment capability as the driver's seat (the seat base does not go up or down) and the Navigation is not intuitive and should be 100% voice interfaced. The Nav is not worth the money. Perhaps an app interface with Waze or Google maps similar to the existing Pandora interface would be better? In the future, it would be nice to have a rear seat access power plug/usb and rear thermostat for climate control. Also, a driver seat vibrating lane departure warning would be perfect. The lack of trunk space is not too bad. Others have complained about the CVT transmission/motor noise, but it has been a non-issue for us. Performance and acceleration are good. Rear seat legroom is exceptionally good. Overall, we are happy with our purchase and look forward to more drive time. Winter traction and overall cold weather performance will be in the follow-up review, so stay tuned. UPDATE 10/8/2017: It's been over a year and my wife loves the car. Performance in the snow was better than expected and the traction control works well. We have not reset the MPG computer and it reads 37 mpg overall. Gas mileage is not competitive compared to a Prius, etc. The advertised mpg of 50/45 is not accurate. That said, the Accord is still a really great value and a sharp-looking car. UPDATE 4/22/2019: The mileage is now 31,000 and the MPG average varies between 29-39mpg. We have not touched the mileage computer since the purchase of the vehicle. Again, overall mpg is nothing near 50mpg. The OEM tires are holding up well along with the seats and interior overall. The factory battery just bit the dust, which is not unexpected. Other than changing the oil, rotating the tires, and putting gas in it, we will probably never sell this car...It's great to hear that you had a positive experience with your vehicle! Thank you for sharing your feedback. It's important to note that regular maintenance, such as vacuuming out the windshield gutter, can help prevent issues like the one you experienced. It's also great to hear that you found a car that better suits your needs and preferences. Thank you for your loyalty to Lexus and for sharing your story with us!

  4. Darrell Homenick 2025-02-26

    Vehicle year: 2017

The car had some great features such as comfortable seats, lane assist, and smart cruise control. However, we experienced some issues with the gas mileage, trunk space, and leather seats. Additionally, we encountered some warranty-related problems with the back deck and airbag. The radio and Apple CarPlay also had some glitches. Despite these challenges, we made the decision to part ways with the car after 9 months. Overall, we remain confident in our ability to make informed decisions when it comes to purchasing a vehicle.

  5. Cullen Borer 2025-02-22

    Vehicle year: 2020

The Honda car has some issues that need to be addressed. Specifically, the driver seat springs and automated braking system require attention. Additionally, Honda no longer includes a spare tire, jack, or wrench which may cause inconvenience in case of a breakdown. As a full-time Uber driver, it is important to be prepared for any situation, especially in areas with no signal. Despite these issues, the car has an aesthetically pleasing design. However, I am disappointed with the overall experience and will consider other options in the future.

I've had this car for two months now and there are things I both like and dislike about it. On the positive side, it gets great fuel mileage on warmer days, achieving over 40 MPG. The interior and exterior are also quite attractive, and it drives like a normal car with plenty of power. However, there are some downsides. The engine noise can be quite loud at low speeds, and the hybrid system doesn't perform well in cold weather, only achieving around 15 MPG on a very cold day. Additionally, I find the switching between the engine and EV modes at stop signs and red lights to be a bit jarring and unsettling. Finally, it's worth noting that the car doesn't come with a spare tire, but I was able to purchase an OEM spare for $100. Overall, I think this car has its pros and cons, but it's been a decent choice for me so far.

I've had this car for almost 3 1/2 years and driven it almost 60,000 miles, so I feel qualified to give a decent review of the '17 Accord Hybrid Ex-l. First off, it's been very reliable, with no downtime in the shop other than regular maintenance. The mileage has been a little under 40 mpg, and I generally drive faster than average. The car still looks attractive, and I enjoy driving it. It's fun on twisting roads with the instant torque from the hybrid, and it's quick, not super fast, but probably somewhat under 7 seconds 0-60. There are two main downsides: the trunk is smaller than the standard Accord, but not too small, and the entertainment system is not really intuitive, but once you're used to it, it's okay. The sound system on the ex-l is good. Would I buy it again? I don't know. I like the torque and quickness, but I would like something either a little more luxurious like the Lexus Es hybrid or sporty, like the BMW 3 or comparable, which were some of the cars I looked at prior to purchasing the Accord. Maybe full electric on the next go-round.

I absolutely love the Accord Hybrid! In fact, I've owned three of them over the past few years and still have two currently - a 2018 EX and a 2020 EX-L. The EX-L level is well-appointed with a high-end stereo, leather seats, memory seats, and a Homelink system. In my opinion, the Touring doesn't offer anything compelling over the EX-L that makes it worth $3000 more. However, there is some controversy over the mileage results for different drivers. Based on my experience, the 2017 model I owned for three years would average 53 mpg in the summer and 45 mpg in the winter months. The 2018 gets slightly worse mileage at around 41-44 mpg, while the 2020 is averaging 47 mpg for the first 1000 miles. It's important to note that different drivers tend to have very different driving habits that can affect mpg results widely. The fact that a 2018 and 2020 Accord Hybrid tend to have a swing of 5 mpg with the same driver is odd. They both have the same mechanics under the hood. No one in the online forums has been able to explain different mpg results from the stated 47 EPA average other than pointing to different drivers' habits that can affect mpg. Another major factor in mileage results is start/stop versus cruising mpg. If your drives tend to be short trips of 1-10 miles in a mostly urban environment with traffic stops, you likely won't top 40 mpg. However, if you have 5-20 mile trips over roads with non-stop cruising between 35-60 mph with few stops, your mileage will top 45 or possibly 50 mpg. This car gets the best mpg at around 50 mph with few stops in temperate weather of 50-70 degrees. On the freeway, when you go between 60-80 your mileage will be 40-45 mpg tops due to the gas engine running continuously to generate enough power to keep at speed.During the winter, the cold weather can have a direct impact on the mpg of the car, and the hybrid may get no better than 45 mpg, and possibly less than 40 mpg. Another common complaint is the engine grind when accelerating from a stop to get up to speed quickly. While the grind can be unpleasant, it's not that noticeable if you don't floor the engine. The car's drivetrain is very peppy, and you likely won't need to floor it to reach your desired speed in about 10 seconds. Technically, the hybrid has 212 hp, but it's important to note that the conditions are rarely right for that much horsepower and torque to be available. Many car reviews online can explain why the hybrid's 212 hp isn't like a gas engine's only horsepower. If you need the most power, you should go for the 2.0-liter engine on the Sport or Touring models. The drive of the Accord is fantastic, and it feels very sporty. It's a true driver's car, and I enjoy driving it every time I go out, even for short trips. The car hugs the road and feels very responsive for acceleration, turns, and braking. While the brakes are far from best in class, they do regenerate the lithium battery during stops. The back seat is very roomy for a sedan, and the trunk is very spacious. There is no lost space due to the hybrid battery, and the only sacrifice of the hybrid model is the loss of a spare tire to reduce weight. Only a fix-a-flat kit is offered. While gas is under $3 a gallon, you may not save a ton of money unless you drive 15,000 miles a year or more. However, I would still recommend it for the gas savings and longer driving range between fill-ups (500 miles on average). The EX-L is around 30-31K and seems like a great value for all the features and accessories included. If you have passengers in the back who need power charging for phones, it's worth noting that there is no USB connectivity in the 2020 model, so it's best to go for the 2021 model. The EX model offers all the essential features you're likely to want, such as Apple Play/Android Auto and heated seats. Additionally, the 2021 refresh features are very nice. However, if you don't need leather, a self-dimming mirror, and Homelink features, the 2020 model is still great without the cosmetic and feature updates. I highly recommend this car. Update: I traded in my 2020 Accord in March 2024 for a 2023 Accord. Although I somewhat regret selling this car, I wanted to try the newest design. I love the 2023 design and have a review of it on this site.

I recently purchased a used car that had previously been on a three-year lease. The car was in excellent condition, both inside and out, and it looked brand new. I was initially worried about the car's pick-up, but a test drive at the dealership quickly dispelled that fear. This is my sixth Accord, and I must say that the body style on this one is really sharp. Unless I pointed out the minor imperfections or someone followed body style updates closely, no one would know that this car is used. This car is a big step-up in technology and features for me, as I had been driving a 2007 V-6 Accord. The fuel economy is not as advertised, but I am not burning pure gasoline, which is what the EPA uses to determine fuel-economy estimates. I plan to get 100% gasoline at my next fill-up and see how that changes the fuel economy of the car. The car has a roomy interior, right turn signal camera, back up camera, body style, heated seats, auto power up on both front windows, Bluetooth, memory seats, fuel savings, smooth ride, and excellent handling. The trunk is a bit smaller, and there is no spare tire or trunk pass-through. The engine noise is also a bit of a downside. However, the good FAR outweighs the bad on this car, and I'm very pleased with it. I love driving it and trying to get as much mileage as I can on a tank of gas. I still have my Accord V-6 if I want power; the Hybrid is my

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my new 2022 Honda Accord. It only had 14000 miles when I bought it, and I was pleasantly surprised to get 52 mpg on a 200 mile trip just 2 days later. Even with the snow and cold weather here in Minnesota, I'm still getting an impressive 46 mpg. The car is roomy, comfortable, and quiet, and I'm saving a lot of money on gas compared to my old pickup that only gave me 19 mpg. Plus, it's great for the climate! Overall, I think it was a great choice.
