The Hyundai Veloster (Korean: 현대 벨로스터, romanized: Hyeondae Belloseuteo) is a compact car first produced in 2011 by Hyundai, with sales beginning in South Korea on March 10, 2011, and in Canada and the United States since the fall of 2011. In South Korea, it was marketed under Hyundai's 'Premium Youth Lab'. It was unveiled on January 10, 2011, at the Detroit Auto Show, and fills the void left when Hyundai discontinued the Hyundai Tiburon after the 2008 model year.

The car differs from most other hatchbacks with its asymmetrical door configuration, featuring one large door on the driver side and two smaller doors on the passenger side. This configuration is more common on commercial vehicles and minivans. In North America, the Veloster was equipped with Blue Link, a new telematics system which will eventually be standard on all Hyundai models. The system is comparable to OnStar in General Motors vehicles, and provides customers with automatic crash notification, vehicle diagnostics, and remote control of vehicle features, among others.

Development and early concepts

HND-3 concept (2007)

The Hyundai HND-3 concept was the third sport compact concept car styled at Hyundai's Design and Technical Center. It included 2.0-liter DOHC Theta inline four-cylinder engine and five-speed automatic transmission. The concept car became a Veloster Coupe in 2011.

The car concept was unveiled at the 2007 Seoul Motor Show, with the final production version released on January 11 at the Detroit Auto Show. The Veloster is developed under the codename FS, and is built on a modified version of the Cee'd's front-wheel drive platform.

Common 2017 Hyundai Veloster problems

The Hyundai Veloster, a hatchback coupe targeted toward the younger audience, has been in production since 2011. While it offers an ideal blend of practicality and affordability, there are certain model years that have been plagued with issues, particularly the 2013 model year. This article will focus on the common problems reported by owners of the 2017 Hyundai Veloster, based on complaints from owners of this car.

Engine Problems

Engine problems are a common issue for the 2017 Hyundai Veloster, with several owners reporting various issues. These include going into limp mode, hesitating at acceleration, and excessive oil consumption. The engine problems can be severe, with some owners experiencing complete engine failure. In some cases, the Veloster burned through around 2.5 quarts of oil per 2,000 miles, and some owners noticed that their vehicle felt like it was going to stall whenever they accelerated from a stopped position.

Transmission Issues

Transmission issues are another common problem for the 2017 Hyundai Veloster, with some owners reporting that their car would work normally most of the time, but then suddenly have transmission problems. Transmission slippage, high RPMs yet poor acceleration, and odd noises are among the most common transmission problems that Veloster owners have complained about. These problems may appear at the mileage of 25,000 miles and are mostly caused by low-quality transmission fluids, regular driving under heavy loads, or hidden defects.

Connecting Rod Failure

Being an integral part of the engine, a connecting rod does an essential job, tying the piston to the crankshaft and creating rotational torque. Unfortunately, as many customers’ complaints say, Hyundai Veloster connecting rods are not durable enough to work under high pressure for many years. That’s why if you like to run at full throttle from time to time, you should be ready to replace your connecting rods or even the whole engine assembly at the mileage of 60,000+ miles.

Bluetooth Connectivity and Syncing Issues

Many owners of the 2017 Hyundai Veloster have complained about their vehicle’s intermittent Bluetooth connectivity and syncing issues. Some reported experiencing their entire entertainment system freezing because of a faulty Bluetooth connection.

In summary, the 2017 Hyundai Veloster has several common problems, including engine issues, transmission problems, connecting rod failure, and Bluetooth connectivity and syncing issues. Owners of this car have reported experiencing limp mode, hesitation at acceleration, excessive oil consumption, transmission slippage, high RPMs yet poor acceleration, odd noises, and intermittent Bluetooth connectivity and syncing issues. While the Hyundai Veloster is a reliable hatchback, it is essential to be aware of these common problems to ensure that your vehicle is running smoothly and to address any issues as soon as possible to avoid a complete engine failure or other severe problems.

  • Summary: I was driving on the highway; the speed limit is 70mph. I had the sunroof of my 2017 Hyundai Veloster open to the first stage. The glass in the sunroof literally exploded, (it sounded like a gun going off) blasting shattered glass down on me and all of the interior of the car, (scared the [XXX] out of me!) Luckily, I wasn't hurt and managed to pull over without any traffic incident, but this could have easily caused personal injury or a collision on the highway at 70mph. It wasn't struck by anything, and the glass was in perfect condition without visual defects, i.e., chips, scratches etc. It has been turned into my insurance and I am going to request that the new glass gets a coating like the windshield to prevent the glass from coming apart like this in the event that this happens again. I think all sunroof glass should be treated this way from the factory, a broken window or sunroof is enough distraction while driving without being showered in glass. ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD1HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I took my vehicle in to get the initial KSDS recall campaign updated (knock sensor). The car failed on my way home from the dealership and they scheduled me the next day to fix the problem (the acknowledged the knock sensor update caused the failure and is the that beginning step in obtaining a new engine from Hyundai. They then gave me a loaner car while my car was going to be repaired. I then recieve a call from the Hyundai service center about how my salvage title status excludes me from further repairs. I am then forced to drive my car home again with a failed engine. The sneaky way this is being done is horrific and on a massive scale. I was duped into getting the recalls from the letters sent out by Hyundai and at no point was there transparency about what would and did happen with my vehicle (and many others). No acknowledgement on how most if not all cars who get the update fail about 10 miles after driving it again, and lose power (I was on the highway in the far left lane). I was robbed of my ability to make an informed decision about my vehicle, this whole process is shrouded in secrecy from the consumer and I'm left holding the bag and the dangerous un drivable vehicle. I'm not sure how I can be cohersed from the manufacturer to let them fix their initial errors and be left with a non working car and expected to pay for the bill. There was no transparency about what I was signing up for, the ramifications and the safety hazards with the cars being statistically most likely to fail on the way home. What they are doing to me and many other people is dangerous and extremely wrong on many levels. When the engine failed I was extremely close to being rear ended and causing a large accident as it was full and fast moving traffic on the highway. I was fast acting and maneuvered properly and safely. Some will probably not be that lucky. There was no real warning, just a heavy thud and lose of power in tandum with the check engine light flashing (never has before

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-29
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD9HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I own a 2017 hyundai veloster with roughly 122,000 miles on it, recently I got in my car to go to work, started the vehicle and exited my apartment complex onto a local road drove roughly a half mile to the on ramp for the highway, the car was just about up to its usual operating temperature when I accelerated down the on ramp and merged into traffic, at this time there were no warning lights, the engine temperature was normal, the car reached roughly 55/60mph and immediately lost power, pressing the gas pedal harder caused the car to lose more power and buck. At this time there were still no warning lights on the dash, the car slowed down to roughly 30/35mph presenting a significant danger to myself and other traffic as this was on a major highway with heavy amounts of traffic. It was approximately 4 miles to the next exit and the only safe place that I could exit the highway/ flow of traffic. The car was turned off and sat for roughly 5 minutes at which time I restarted the vehicle and drove it home on a local side road, the vehicle had no power and would not accelerate or maintain a speed above 30mph, at this time there were still no check engine lights on. A tow truck was called to haul the car to a local repair shop as the dealer had no openings for service, at the time the tow truck showed up to load up my car the vehicle was started breifly and a check engine light was now on, the local repair shop diagnosed the issue as a failed catalytic converter and the engine code as indicating inefficient emissions control readings on an 02 sensor. The repair shop could not come up with a reasonable answer as to how the catalytic converter had failed other than saying it had completely melted the material in the converter. The engine had no misfires, fuel issues, excessive oil consumption at this time and no engine codes were active or stored indicating any of theses issues. The catalytic converter failure is a major saftey issue that is happening on hyundai engines.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD2HU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Almost got into an accident with 2017 Hyundai Veloster. Car stopped accelerating. Car had service campaign to enhance knock sensor software to detect abnormal engine bearing noise before potentially "severe engine damage occurs." They did not explain engine could have issue. Engine oil keeps disappearing. I went more than 5 times no fix yet. One time they put a free oil change. I keep going to Hyundai and am told nothing is wrong with car by Hyundai dealer. Months later I receive a letter from Hyundai extending warranty due to connecting rod bearing wear for replacement of engine. According to Hyundai," If abnormal engine bearing noise is detected, the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) will blink continuously, and the vehicle will be placed in Engine Protection Mode allowing the customer to drive to the nearest Hyundai dealer for diagnosis and repair. In addition, DTC P132600 will be recorded in the ECM. The vehicle can continue to be operated for a limited time in Engine Protection Mode, but it will accelerate slower and have a reduced maximum speed. Engine RPMs will be limited to approximately 1800-2000 RPM." My car is doing that. I told dealer. They tried to charge me to change my coils and sparkplugs and refused to check my engine unless I fixed that first. They said they don't know what's going on even though Hyundai sent a letter out stating engines will be fixed because of rod bearing wear. Hyundai knows that the engine is bad and extending warranty for engines but are not recalling the engines. People can die from this. Engine oil that leaks because of this can heat up and cause cars to explode/cause accidents.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-20
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD0HU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving this vehicle, it suffered catastrophic engine failure, I had no low oil pressure or check engine warning lights until the failure occurred. I was stranded on the I-270 outer-belt of Columbus, OH during the early morning hours of July 20, 2022, That is a hazardous place to be with traffic passing my vehicle at high rates of speed. I checked my engine oil and there was nothing on the dipstick. The vehicle had not exceeded its oil change window. The vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer/police/or insurer. AAA Gahanna New Albany Service Center 614-750-8350 verified that the engine was blown. It is unsafe that and engine can be suddenly oil starved with no low oil pressure light, leaving the driver at the side of the highway amid fast moving traffic.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-16
  • VIN: KMHTC6AD0HU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: 2017 Hyundai Veloster, about 85,000 miles. Engine seized at 50 MPH on a busy three lane city street during rush hour traffic. This is a safety issue as i could have been rear ended if i did not change lanes to get off the Main Street. There was no check engine light, even after engine failure. Hyundai dealership has looked at the engine and deemed it non recall related, and i will have to pay out of pocket. Hyundai service advisor verbally told me there were about 15 other cars at his location that had the same exact problem. There were metal shaving found in my oil pan and the short block will need to be replaced. I beleive this to be related to excessive oil consumption that led to engine damage that went undetected due to the failed knock sensor (the open recall) I have not received my diagnostic paperwork but will have available upon request.

STEERING,AIR BAGS,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-18
  • VIN: KMHTC6AE1HU
  • Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: The vacuum pump had an internal mechanical failure, resulting in complete failure of the airbag control module, electronic stability control system, power steering, ABS, and speedometer. These were all shown as warning lights on the dashboard, starting with the ESC, then sporadic airbag light, sporadic steering light, etc.. In the event of a crash, the airbags would not have deployed. In the event of low-traction conditions, the car would not have been able to maintain control and I could have crashed. In the event of turning across traffic, my steering could have failed and I could have crashed. Due to the speedometer malfunction, I could have been going too fast and put myself and others at risk for high-speed collision. This problem has been confirmed and repaired by a Hyundai Dealership. The repairs would have been covered under warranty, but the vehicle is no longer under warranty. The dealership specified that there was nothing I could have done to prevent this failure. Occurred at 78,000 miles on March 18, 2022.

Said it was probably another bad sensor under seat. It intermittently goes off and on now every few months. I have no idea if the airbag would work if I were in an accident. I haven’t continued to keep taking it back for more new sensors anymore. (I don’t believe every single new sensor they put in has gone bad.) So I’m at a loss what to do.

I PULLED OVER AND COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO RESTART (SOUNDED LIKE THE ALTERNATOR AND BELT WERE MOVING, BUT THE MOTOR WOULD NOT TURN OVER.) GOT IT TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP, WHERE THEY ARE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING APPROVAL FOR A NEW MOTOR. THEY CLAIM THAT THE MOTOR LOST ALL COMPRESSION, AND FAILED A BEARING TEST. IT WOULD NOT SURPRISE ME IF IT WAS A BEARING FAILURE ON THE CRANKSHAFT, LIKE OTHERS HAVE MENTIONED ON HERE. Negative 2017 Hyundai Veloster car reviews

  1. Keenan Kuphal 2025-01-07

The Veloster has been experiencing issues with surging and hesitation, particularly when accelerating or merging onto the freeway. Despite my attempts to have the issue resolved, Hyundai has informed me that this is a normal occurrence and cannot be fixed. Additionally, I have noticed some interior problems such as carpet coming up, floor mats falling apart, leather peeling off the steering wheel and shifter, and a few loose plastic roof parts. Due to these issues, I requested to return the car after only 3 weeks of ownership. It is clear that the Veloster and Hyundai have not met my expectations in terms of quality and reliability.

  2. Salvador O'Connell 2024-11-27

The car was a bit difficult to handle, and I had to push the pedal hard to move forward, which caused some discomfort in my knee after a 12-minute drive. The car's visibility to the back and sides was poor due to the narrow windows, and I had to look out half through the sloping skylight. The door-locking system was primitive, but the brakes were very good. Although the car looks cool, I personally would not buy it, and I am looking forward to returning it to the rental agency. If you have driven a smoother and better car in the past, you may find this car unacceptable. However, if you are young and have no experience with a better car, you may not notice the difference.

  3. Eddie Franecki 2024-10-18

undefinedI'm a huge fan of the Hyundai product, especially considering the warranty they share with Kia, which is second-best in the entire auto industry, only behind the 72 thousand mile warranty Volkswagen provides. However, I do hope that Hyundai will redesign the Veloster turbo and the Veloster N with a much nicer interior, better seats, and quality materials and craftsmanship. By the way, did you know that you can buy a Veloster N for 22 or 23 thousand dollars on autotrader.com? This is a great opportunity to get a good deal on a car that was previously priced at 28, 29, or even 30 thousand dollars. It seems that they aren't selling as well as they thought they would, but I still believe in the quality of the product.

  4. Liam Schowalter 2024-04-24

I am the first owner of a 2016 Hyundai Veloster, purchased in October 2016. I absolutely loved it at first and thought I’d keep it even after I got another car down the road, because of its sporty drive and fuel economy. However, I have had some issues with the car that have been quite expensive to fix. Within the first year, I had popped 2 tires (on regular drive, nothing particularly rough or pothole filled). By now (3yrs 3mos of owning) I have replaced SIX tires due to POPPING them (not low tread or any other usual reason), because the “stylish low profile tires” have no tire and too much rim. The tires cost at the very least $100 for the 225/40R18, and are too rare to be found used at local salvage shops. I’ve been told I need new shocks and struts, which I shouldn’t need for another 2 years in an average car. My drivers side headlight went out about 3 years in, and not due to a burned out bulb. I’ve been told an average of $100 just to diagnose the issue causing the headlight to not work. About a month after, my passenger headlight lightbulb went out and needed replacing. Despite these issues, it still drives comfortably, and if the repairs it needed weren’t so expensive, I would definitely recommend the car to others. It’s fun to drive and comfortable on long journeys for those who don’t need the backseat for passengers (I take it on a 12 hour drive home once a year). It stores a surprising amount in the hatchback when the back seats are laid down. Unfortunately, I am trading it in after only 3 years because of its expensive-to-fix mechanical issues. I wish the tires and suspension were made more reliably so I didn’t have to switch cars. In general, it honestly just feels like it must’ve been made cheaply on Hyundai’s part.

I own a 2016 Veloster Turbo with the 7-speed DCT transmission. Although I adore my car and find it incredibly enjoyable to drive when the transmission is functioning properly, I have been experiencing some issues with it lately. Specifically, the car fails to accelerate despite the RPMs increasing. I have reached out to Hyundai multiple times regarding this matter and am currently awaiting their response. The transmission issues have caused the car to stall and have nearly resulted in a few accidents. On the other hand, my fiance owns a VT of a different year with a 6-speed DCT and has had no issues with it whatsoever.

Firstly, it seems that the base engine lacks power. It would be great if they had the 2.0 l engine from the Elantra GT available for this car. If you are tall, this may not be the best vehicle for you. Additionally, some of the interior parts may appear cheap. When changing lanes, it is important to be cautious as side vision is not great. However, the backup camera is a great feature. On the other hand, the 6-speed manual transmission is incredibly smooth and easy to shift. The steering and braking performance is good, and fuel consumption is great. In fact, this car usually only sees city driving and averages 33 mpg in those conditions. Although I haven't taken it on a long distance trip yet, I'm sure it will perform well. If you have children or need to carry adults in the rear seat, this may not be the best vehicle for you. However, if you're single and looking for basic, dependable transportation at a low cost, the Veloster is a great option. If you're looking to make a sports car out of it, it may be better to buy the turbo instead. Lastly, I received 3 free oil changes with the purchase of the vehicle, but unfortunately, there were some major errors made during the service appointments. Despite this, I still highly recommend the Veloster for its overall value and performance. This car dealer will never touch my car again. I have had the vehicle for just short of 7 years, driven 18,000 miles, and have had no issues with it. I simply put fuel in it and check the tire pressures, oil level, and coolant level every two weeks. That's all the care it needs for now. I am sure the tires will require replacement in the next 2 years or so, as this incessant desert heat is going to ruin them long before I wear them out. In August 2022, the windshield washer fluid reservoir developed a leak and is now empty. As it is currently 109 F, I will defer this until the weather is cooler. It looks like the right front inner fender well and tire need to be removed to access this.

While I only had the 4 cylinder base model, this car was so much fun to drive! I had a manual and it hugged the road, hung low to the ground... and turned heads. Unfortunately, a tree fell on her and crushed the sunroof, top, and part of the passenger side door. Our insurance totaled her out. She will definitely be missed.

The Veloster has a lot of great features! Gas mileage is impressive, averaging about 30mpg even with a heavy foot. The car is surprisingly roomy, with four real adults fitting comfortably. Cargo space is also very good for its class. Performance and handling are above average, making it a very taut and responsive car. It reminds me of a crazy puppy dog! It even outhandled the 2017 Mini Cooper S and 2017 Honda Civic Si that I cross shopped with. While it's not a FAST car, it IS a quick point and squirt kinda car. It's addictive between 3000-6000 RPM. However, there are a few things that could be improved. The ride is a bit harsh, likely due to the low-profile 40 series tires. A change to a slightly taller sidewall could help the ride quality, but it's all a tradeoff. The DCT transmission is not the sportiest, but it's not bad either. LED lights all around would be a great upgrade, as the DRL's are LED but all other bulbs are old fashioned halogen yellow ones. Additionally, the car could benefit from more tech features like Car Play and info screens. Overall, I really love this car a lot. It's only second to my '97 NA Miata (rip) in fun factor, and beats the 2017 Elantra that it's replacing with ease in almost every category but toys & comfort. The car is now stock, but I plan to install an oil catch can very soon. Anyone who is looking for a fun, efficient, and reliable little car can't go wrong with a Veloster!Just a friendly reminder, it might be best to opt for the turbo version rather than the normally aspirated one. You wouldn't want to regret your decision later on!

Great ride! The manual turbo really gives it some great acceleration.

I recently test drove a range of cars including the Mustang EcoBoost, Camaro V6, and Honda Accord Coupe with CVT Paddle shifting. While I was looking for a car that was fun, exciting, fast, quick, and had tons of mods available, I found that the Veloster Turbo 2014 was the perfect fit for me. The last customer had modified it with BOV & Intake, which gave it an amazing sound and quickness. After doing some research, I found that the Veloster had everything I wanted and more, and at a great price. I purchased a 2016 Veloster Ultra Black with 7k on it, and it was by far the best choice. The car is incredibly fast and small, making it a blast to drive. I love the fact that Hyundai will cover the engine and transmission for 10 years and 100k miles. The gas mileage is also great, and I now spend less than $20 a week on gas. The car has made my commute to work much more enjoyable, taking only 15 to 20 minutes instead of the previous 30 to 40 minutes. Although I have since traded it in for a Lexus ES350 F Sport, I still have fond memories of my Veloster and would recommend it to anyone looking for a fun and reliable car.
