The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.

First generation (2010)

The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.

The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

Common 2010 Gmc Terrain problems

The GMC Terrain 2010 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues in detail:

  • Excessive Oil Consumption: The GMC Terrain models, including the 2010 and 2011 options, face excessive oil consumption. This issue can cause the vehicle to burn out fast if not careful, leading to more significant problems.
  • Faulty Airbags: Several owners of the 2017 GMC Terrain complained about airbags that tend to malfunction. This issue can be a massive safety risk, as the airbags may not deploy in the event of a collision or crash.
  • Faulty HVAC System: Several Terrain model years have HVAC system woes. Some owners shared stories about their heater blowing cold air instead, which can be unbearable under extreme conditions. On top of that, GMC had to release numerous service bulletins to address the issue of malfunctioning heating and cooling systems.

It is essential to address these issues promptly to ensure the safety and reliability of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and check-ups can help prevent some of these problems from occurring or worsening.

I almost wrecked my terrain due to this problem. Now on my instrument panel says camshaft/crankshaft sensor says service stabilitrack and something about my AWD System. All these happened within a week from trying to use my defrost. Also my instrument panel where it shows how fast i go flickers and it flickers on the RPM side as well. POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-14
  • VIN: 2ctfljew3a6
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2010 Terrain had been been intermittent dash warnings for “Service StabiliTrac” and “Engine Power Reduced” which would force the engine to reduce the speed itself down to about 30 MPH. After turning off car and restarting, warnings would go away. Yesterday, while driving on a secondary road, with no check engine light on, the engine stalled while traveling at approx 35 MPH. I was able to drop the vehicle into neutral and coast onto a side street, while also attempting to restart the engine. I was able to pull over without causing an accident. After letting the car sit for a few minutes I attempted to restart the engine, but only got a strange noise from the area of the upper cylinders. At his point the check engine light was now on. While waiting for a tow truck, and independent mechanic pulled up to ask if I needed help. After listening to the noice from the upper engine he asked if he could get tools and look in the engine. I said yes. He quickly pulled parts off the upper engine and opened and removed the upper cylinder cover. This revealed that the timing chain had no tension, as well as shards of shattered plastic all over the place, in and around the upper cylinders. After pointing this out he put everything back together and suggested I contact the dealership I got the vehicle from, which I have done already. He then stated that it appears that the engine would need to be replaced or rebuilt, due to catastrophic engine failure. He said my quick thinking of putting the vehicle into neutral probably avoided causing an accident and allowed me to get myself to a safe spot before stopping the vehicle. He also stated that this particular GM motor is known for catastrophic failure, which GM has failed or refused to acknowledge

Negative 2010 Gmc Terrain car reviews

  1. Judah Feil 2025-01-04

Our 2010 Terrain has been driven extensively, with 87,000 miles accumulated in less than 3 years. Despite being advertised with an expected mpg of 31, we have consistently achieved 24-26 mpg with the 4 cylinder on eco. We have encountered some issues with the lift gate, timing chain knocking, and transmission oil, but have taken proactive measures to address them. We have also noted that the back seat may not be the most comfortable for those with good backs. Additionally, the AC has required maintenance twice in 2 years. Overall, we remain confident in our vehicle and its performance.

  2. Irwin Koelpin 2024-11-19

I purchased this car brand new in February 2010 and loved it at first. However, I started experiencing a loud ticking noise and took it to the dealer. They informed me that it was a high-pressure fuel pump issue. Within four years, they replaced a chain in front of the motor, but since then, I have only had minor issues and recalls for minor problems. In April, the dealer rebuilt the engine due to high oil consumption. Four months later, the transmission would bang when shifting at times. I took it to a transmission shop and was informed that this is a well-known issue with 2010/2011 Terrains and Equinox's. Unfortunately, GM is turning a blind eye to this issue and will not provide any help. I will be getting rid of this car and my 2011 Equinox. It's a shame because I just bought a Colorado and I hope it has better quality. As of now, I have 106,457 miles and have not experienced any issues for the last 13,000 miles. I would still love to find a class-action lawsuit over the poor transmission.

  3. Hester Cole 2024-09-20

I bought my Terrain as soon as it hit dealerships during its release. Unfortunately, I've had a lot of problems with the vehicle since then. I've had issues with the vehicle shutting off in the middle of intersections due to the sensor oxygen (engine control) needing to be replaced, as well as problems with the rear control arm bushings, the stabilizer shaft, and the exhaust manifold - all of which needed to be replaced. Recently, GM tried to charge me for the timing chain, claiming that I hadn't changed the oil. However, I was able to prove that I had changed the oil by providing my receipts, and they ended up covering the $847 bill.

  4. Will Hyatt 2024-08-29

Consider avoiding GMC products due to concerns with quality and customer service. In my experience, I have encountered issues and complaints that were not adequately addressed by the company. It is important to carefully evaluate all options before making a purchase.

  5. Shad Pfeffer 2024-08-09

I purchased a 2010 GMC Terrain and unfortunately, it has been a challenging experience. However, I have taken the necessary steps to address the issues that have arisen. Despite the initial engine repair for excessive oil consumption, I have continued to address any further issues that have arisen. While it has been a difficult investment, I am confident in my ability to handle any future challenges that may arise.

This car handles very nicely, gives a comfortable and quiet ride, and, so far at least, mileage is better than advertised (33.5 mpg in mixed driving during rush hour, but I am a careful driver). Utilitarian, yet stylish and fun to drive! Lots of room in the back seat.

Just traded in my 2001 Jeep Cherokee with 92,000 miles. I was sad to see it go, but I am absolutely loving my new car! It is simply amazing and I never want to leave it. The car drives very smoothly and feels like an Escalade, but for half the price. GMC really did a great job with this car, both inside and out. I have only had it for about 3 days and people are already asking me what it is. I just wish there were more of them around!

Hi there! I noticed a couple of things that could be improved in your car. Firstly, I found that there wasn't quite enough room to comfortably buckle up the front driver's seat belt as it was right up against the center console. Additionally, I found it a bit difficult to get into the driver's door when parked on an incline, especially as I'm 5'9

Although the advertised 32 MPG Hwy. for the 4 cyl. Terrain was a major factor in our decision to purchase it, we were disappointed to find that during our recent 2400 mile trip, mostly on interstate highways and with cruise control set below the listed highway speed, we only averaged about 25 MPG. As senior citizens, we were hoping for better fuel efficiency. While we cannot recommend this vehicle to friends and family based on our experience, we acknowledge that individual driving habits and conditions may vary. It is important to consider all factors when making a purchasing decision.

The 4 cyl Terrain may struggle to maintain cruise control on Interstate Hwys if there are any hills at all, with the tachometer revving from 2000 to 4000 and making a loud noise on any little rise. However, it performs well in town and on flat land highways, and is comfortable to drive and looks great. If you can afford the extra dollars, I suggest buying the 6 cyl for more power and smoother performance.
