2011 Gmc Terrain problems
The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.
First generation (2010)
The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.
The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

- Excessive Oil Consumption: Owners have reported that the 2011 GMC Terrain tends to consume oil extensively, leading to the need for frequent refills. This issue can result in engine damage if not addressed promptly. Regular monitoring of oil levels and timely refills are essential to prevent engine problems associated with oil consumption.
- Engine Troubles: The 2011 GMC Terrain has been associated with various engine issues, including stalling, poor engine power, and potential engine failure. Some owners have experienced the check engine light coming on, while others have faced severe engine damage without warning. Addressing engine problems promptly is crucial to avoid costly repairs or engine replacements.
- Transmission Failure: Another common problem reported by owners is transmission failure. Issues with the transmission can lead to significant inconvenience and costly repairs. Symptoms of transmission problems may include general transmission failure, lack of proper reset after fixes, and powertrain failure. Timely maintenance and addressing any transmission issues promptly are essential to ensure the vehicle's reliability.
- Faulty Airbags: Some owners have raised concerns about faulty airbags in the 2011 GMC Terrain. Malfunctioning airbags pose a significant safety risk as they may fail to deploy in the event of a collision, increasing the likelihood of injuries. Routine inspections of the airbag system are crucial to ensure its proper functioning and address any potential safety concerns.
- HVAC System Issues: The HVAC system in the 2011 GMC Terrain has been a source of problems for some owners. Complaints include issues with the heater blowing cold air instead of warm air, abnormal odors from the system, and heating/cooling malfunctions. Prompt diagnosis and repairs by a qualified mechanic are necessary to address HVAC complications and maintain the comfort and functionality of the vehicle's climate control system.
By addressing these common problems proactively and ensuring regular maintenance and timely repairs, owners of the GMC Terrain 2011 can mitigate potential issues and enhance the overall reliability and performance of their vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-15
- VIN: 2CTALMEC3B6
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: Ok so my 2011 GMC terrain just went over 150,000 miles I bought this vehicle used from a dealership not knowing that there was a big lawsuit or that GMC continuted making this make and model knowing that it had a oil usage problem. So mmm mmm with that being said let's start with my vehicle uses oil, my vehicle idles high low and always rough at times, my service stabilitrak flashes, my motor sounds like a HEMI kock knock knock instead of a 2.4, doesn't matter where I'm at or where I'm going I let off of the gas and my car dies.... Let me clarify on that last one me and my 9 year old daughter we're headed home today let off the gas to go around a curve and a hill and you guesswd it my 2011 GMC TERRAIN died I lost all control and all power had no power steering and no brakes... I just thank Jesus I wasn't speeding and that there was no oncoming traffic cuz I don't think me nor my 9 year old would have made it out ok. So thanks to whatever faulty motor engine or power train GMC has with this make and model putting people's safety and lives in danger due to these issues and only choosing certain VINS eligible instead of all VINS from 2011 GMC TERRAINS in my opinion is just choosing which owners survive because this make and model is dangerous to whoever drives it and to whoever meets it on the highway.

- Summary: My wife and I on an Interstate Highway when the Check Engine light came on and the vehicle started slowing down. The message "Engine Power Reduced" came up on the dashboard display. My wife was driving and started pulling off the highway. As we left the driving surface, the car cut off. After a few minutes, the vehicle restarted and we drove home (about 12 miles). We took the vehicle to a mechanic who told us the oil was low. No low oil or low oil pressure lights had illuminated before this incident. He also stated that the timing chain would have to be changed and that this was a recurring problem on the GMC Terrain. I have not had any work done to the vehicle as yet. GMC should have a recall for this problem as I have seen many reports on the internet since it happened to us dating back over ten years.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-05
- VIN: 2CTALSEC6B6
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: my windshield wipers just suddenly stopped working during a rain storm. I managed to get home safely and after a quick search I was able to confirm this is a known problem with GMC Terrain's. It is talked about in Special Coverage N192266180. However this happened during a rain storm with limited visibility. So I am filing this complaint because GMC needs to issue a full blown recall and not a fix for after the windshield wiper system module breaks. Failed wipers during a storm could get people killed. I was lucky but others may not be. I took video of the wipers not working during the storm if you wish for me to send it to you.

We chose the Terrain as it is smaller than our previous gas-guzzling crew cab truck. The Terrain SLE-1 was the perfect choice for us as it has a great safety rating, all the features we wanted, and our local dealership has an excellent reputation. We have not been disappointed so far. Although the four-cylinder is not spectacular, it does the job well in our hilly area. While driving in eco mode, we get slightly less than the listed mpg, but we typically see 20/25/30 for city, combined and highway. The interior is extremely comfortable, and the cabin is well designed. We also appreciate the sliding back bench. Overall, we are very happy with our decision.
-
My husband and I researched many vehicles before deciding the Terrain was the best SUV for our needs without breaking the bank. I have owned the Terrain for a month now and have noticed that my daily driving, which is mostly highway, only gets about 23 miles a gallon. While I didn't expect to get 32, I did expect more than this. Additionally, the vehicle shifts hard and jerky. Perhaps GMC needs to review their claims of great gas mileage before many others are misled. It would be great if they could offer some sort of compensation for the discrepancy.

Looked at all the smaller SUVs on the market and found that the Terrain offered the most value for my money! While the rear design is a bit dull, the front design is beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised by the comfort, with lots of leg room and the kids love the rear reclining seats. In my opinion, it's Terrainiffic!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Terrain! It sounds like it's been a great fit for you so far. The comfort and security it provides on the road are definitely important factors to consider when choosing a vehicle. And having plenty of room in the backseat is always a plus, especially when you need to transport passengers. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

Love my new car! It rides great and is very fun to drive! I would definitely recommend this car to everyone!

We considered several car brands including Honda, Mazda, and Toyota. Ultimately, we decided on the GMC Terrain due to its size, design, and most importantly, its gas mileage of 22/32. As a resident of the flat South Carolina low country, I took the GMC on two trips to Florida on flat, easy, four-lane roads - one to Tampa and one to Jacksonville from Hilton Head Island. During these trips, I averaged 22-23 miles per gallon, which is still impressive. While I conducted various tests to determine the gas mileage, it is virtually impossible to get 32 miles per gallon. The closest you can get is by driving under 60 miles an hour on an easy Interstate with no A/C. City mileage is equally as poor. Therefore, I would not recommend purchasing this car for its gas mileage.

Had nothing but problems with the navigation system & radio starting in year 2. GMC refused to fix it saying I was out of warranty. After a year of "working around the problem," GMC finally recalled the item. Fast-forward 1 year later and my car just passed 100k miles. The timing chain in the engine broke and damaged the engine. GMC acknowledged this is a problem with my model and even adjusted the warranty from 100k miles to 120k miles for this EXACT problem. However the adjustment only covers certain VIN's. GMC has now told me that it will cost $5k+ to replace the damaged engine in a car that is not even 4 years old yet.Not to mention I was just notified of 2 other recalls on my Terrain. That makes 3 recalls & 1 major non-recall repair in less than 4 years.I bought GMC because I wanted to buy American and GMC's/Chevy's are supposed to be quality automobiles. I might have considered owning another GMC/Chevy/Buick vehicle in the future if GMC would have just owned up to the problem and covered the repair. Needless to say I will never buy another GMC/Chevy/Buick automobile.

I've had my 2011 Terrain for 8 months now and unfortunately, the headliner came down within the first 3 months. The dealership tried to fix it by placing new magnets, but it didn't work. By the time I got home, the headliner was down again. They then ordered a new complete headliner and installed it a month ago, but it's down again. It's been frustrating and time-consuming, as it has taken 4 trips to the dealership to have this worked on, with another trip scheduled for next week to start again. Despite this issue, I do enjoy driving my car, even though it's a little slow. However, if the headliner is not resolved this time, I would be hesitant to purchase another GMC product. Dealing with this issue has not been worth the aggravation on a new car.

Our 2011 Terrain SLE-1 was customized with leather, DVD, and sunroof. However, the sunroof malfunctioned within six months and the air conditioning stopped working during the middle of summer. The 4-cylinder engine is underpowered and produces unpleasant sounds when starting up. Lately, it has been stalling after starting. As for the gas mileage, it is not up to par. While GMC may measure MPG differently, we have never achieved close to 32 MPG on the highway. On average, with about 70% highway and 30% city driving, we only get 19 MPG. We have decided to switch back to Toyota as soon as possible while this vehicle is still operational.
