Gmc Terrain problems

The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.
First generation (2010)
The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.
The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

Common Gmc Terrain problems
The GMC Terrain, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues range from engine troubles, transmission failure, excessive oil consumption, faulty airbags, and HVAC system woes.
One of the most prominent issues reported is engine troubles, with the 2011 GMC Terrain having the most overall complaints, particularly for excessive oil consumption.
Transmission failure is another significant problem, which can be as expensive as engine failures to deal with and twice as annoying. Transmission issues can prevent you from going anywhere you need to in your day. Some of the transmission failure issues included general transmission failure, lack of proper reset after fix, and powertrain failure.
Excessive oil consumption is a common problem in the GMC Terrain models. Instead of burning through oil regularly, this vehicle consumes it extensively. You can find your vehicle burning out fast if you’re not careful. There are specific model years, such as the 2010 and 2011 options, that face excessive oil consumption, which can lead to more significant issues if not addressed promptly.
Faulty airbags are also a concern in some GMC Terrain models. For instance, several owners of the 2017 GMC Terrain complained about airbags that tend to malfunction. The airbags failed to deploy in the event of a collision or crash, which is obviously a massive safety risk. You can’t afford to ignore this issue since there were reports of injuries because the airbags didn’t activate due to an actual accident.
HVAC system woes are another common problem in several Terrain model years. Some owners shared stories about their heater blowing cold air instead, which can be unbearable under extreme conditions. GMC had to release numerous service bulletins to address the issue of malfunctioning heating and cooling systems. Other symptoms of a faulty Terrain HVAC system include water leaks coming from the climate system, strange odors, and reduced heating/cooling performance.
These common problems in the GMC Terrain models can lead to significant expenses and safety risks. Therefore, it is crucial to be aware of these issues and consider them when purchasing or maintaining a GMC Terrain.
Is the GMC Terrain a reliable vehicle?
The 2024 GMC Terrain has a predicted reliability score of 88 out of 100. A J.D. Power predicted reliability score of 91-100 is considered the Best, 81-90 is Great, 70-80 is Average and 0-69 is Fair and considered below average.
Are there any known issues with GMC Terrain?
GMC Terrains can last up to 300,000 miles with proper maintenance. Some of the top GMC Terrain problems include malfunctioning air bags, engine issues, and a faulty transmission.
What was the worst year for GMC Terrain?
Q: What are the GMC Terrain years to avoid? A: The GMC Terrain years to avoid are 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015. These model years have been reported to have various issues that make them less reliable and potentially costly to maintain.
What are the cons of the GMC Terrain?
The GMC Terrain has a comfortable interior and easy-to-use technology features. But a weak base engine, unresponsive transmission and bouncy ride, along with a high price, hinder the Terrain from standing out in the small SUV class.

- VIN: 3GKALMEV0NL
- Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: My check engine light came on and I got it hooked up to get the code of P0171 - Upon checking it was different things like O2 sensor the Mass Airflow sensor, fuel pump issue etc. I have been having issues with slight hesitation during acceleration, some jerking when slowing down (not hitting the brakes). Now the check engine light was on for one day the next day it was off. I did some research and found an article that stated that GM is issuing a safety recall for 2021 and 2022 GMC terrain due to a problem with the fuel pump module failing, not enough fuel to the engine and creating stalling risk. This was from January of 2023. It also said GM notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the upcoming recall on Jan 19th 2023 and was still pending as of Feb 2023. Also stated that GM has not yet conducted actual repairs to correct the issue. My truck, I bought it brand new on Jan 20th 2022, only 23,450 miles on it. The problem literally came out of no where a week ago. The hesitation, not being able to accelerate is very dangerous when I'm on the road, I could not get the check engine light checked out professionally because the next day it was off and I was informed that they could not do a proper diagnostic if there is no light on. Obviously there is an issue with the fuel system and I really want this checked out and possibly replaced. Not to mention my gas is also going very fast now.

I purchased the GMC Terrain SLE FWD and my wife loves it. It drives well, handles well, and is overall a nicer vehicle than the similar Chevy Equinox. With all the incentives that GMC had, we got it at the same price as a less equipped, base Equinox, but the GMC has much more features and an overall nicer interior. The 1.5L engine is plenty for us as we are not aggressive drivers. My only slight dislike so far is the push or pull buttons for Park, Drive, Reverse. I'm not used to those just yet. Overall, I highly recommend it.

We absolutely adore our Terrain! It drives so smoothly and packs a punch! The AWD 1.5L turbo engine is both effective and efficient. We have no problem accelerating to pass trucks on the highways or freeways at high speeds. Plus, we always average about 27-28mpg on long road trips, which is a huge plus! It fits our family of four (including a 4-year-old and a 9-month-old) just right for a week-long trip. One minor complaint we have is that we are not aware of a way to turn off the 'Auto Stop' feature when we stop. GMC seems to have locked this into the engine. While we agree it could save a little money and going green is cool and all, we would LOVE to be able to make that decision for ourselves! During the summer, it's not an issue because it doesn't engage if the AC is on 60%+, but we'd still like the control. We love this SUV; it was our first SUV purchase, and we are glad we went with it. We know it's not the most 'popular' choice, but it's fun to not see a BILLION of the same SUVs on the road like the CRVs and RAV4s. Our SLT model stands out and performs well to boot. It might be slightly on the pricey side, but we think it has everything we'd want. By the way, Edmunds has the engine size wrong for the trim levels. Ours is indeed an SLT 2.0L AWD engine, and it has no options for it. It's probably the best all-around combination of performance, appeal, and features.

I've been driving the fully loaded 6 cyl model for almost 10,000 miles, and my wife and I both love it. We've received a lot of positive comments. The ride is great, the fuel economy has been just as advertised, and the NAV system, Bluetooth, and other features are fantastic. Although I've had a couple of minor issues, the dealer was able to take care of them with no problems. I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a small SUV.

I hope this message finds you well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2021 GMC Terrain. As of today, April 19/2023, I still own my Terrain that I purchased in November 2020. I have been extremely pleased with my purchase as it has not given me a single issue so far. The 1.5L Turbo is good, but I must say that the 2.0L Turbo is even better! The Terrain is a very well thought out vehicle, with features such as the back seat that flips flat at the push of a button and easily clicks back into place. The seats are at hip height, which at 71, makes them very easy to slide in and out of. The front bucket seats are fairly comfortable with many power adjustments, although they could use another 1/2I don't find the road noise too bothersome, but that might be because I always have Talk Radio on. I completely agree that a 2.0 Turbo would be a better engine option. I previously owned a 2018 Terrain Denali with the 2.0L and it felt like a rocket when I hit the gas. I've had my 2021 for 31 months now and have driven 21,530 miles without a single issue. However, there was one moment where I thought, 'what were they thinking?' - the screw for the driving compartment air filter is a 5.5 mm! I did change that filter at 18,000 miles even though the manual called for 30,000 miles. It's such an odd and hard-to-find size. I've been changing the oil and filter every 5,000 miles and rotating the tires. I would love to see the same vehicle but 10-12 inches longer and maybe 4-6 inches wider to fit a more beefy seat like the Tahoe has. Other than that, I will most likely buy another Terrain and definitely if they bring back the 2.0L Turbo.

If you are looking for a reliable car, I would not recommend leasing or buying a GMC. Although my parents have had positive experiences with their GMC's, my personal experience has been quite the opposite. Unfortunately, my car had to go into the shop for the first time just three weeks after I got it. It spent a month in the shop due to a broken torch tube and driveshaft. Additionally, the engine had problems and would reduce power while I was driving, which resulted in another 10 days in the shop. Even after those repairs, the navigation and heating system have continued to have issues. I have been in contact with GM to try and resolve these issues, but have not received a satisfactory response. Based on my experience, I would suggest considering other options if you are looking for a reliable car.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Terrain. I purchased it brand new from our local dealership in October 2010. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it. I've had to have my transmission re-calibrated a few times, and I've noticed that about 1 to 1-1/2 quarts of oil drain out when I get an oil change every 3,000 miles. Additionally, I've had a few parts replaced, including the camshaft actuator, solenoids, and timing chain tensioner bracket. I've also had to get a carbon clean out done a few times in the last 6 months because it's been causing my car to shut off. I'm currently considering trading it in. Thank you for listening!

I am confident in my assessment that the 2019 Denali terrain I purchased on 10/31018 has not met my expectations. Despite having taken it to the shop once, the entertainment system continues to malfunction. Additionally, warning signs for 'service transmission' have already appeared, despite the vehicle having less than 2500 miles on it. The brakes are also scrubbing. Given the cost of the vehicle, I am disappointed with the quality.

The Terrain I own has a V6 engine, not the I-4 as listed by Edmunds. I purchased this car used with 60k miles on it because I got a great deal and wanted a car with AWD. Recently, I took my car from Indianapolis to Destin, Florida and discovered some good and bad things. The engine is beautiful; pedal down and the power comes out. Acceleration in 2nd gear while merging is lusty, and passing power is plentiful. However, the car still feels heavy and any less power would not be adequate. The steering wheel is comfortable, the audio system is plenty loud, and the power seats hold my big American butt pretty well. All in all, I would definitely buy it again.

I recently purchased the above vehicle brand new with only 134 miles on it. Unfortunately, the transmission blew just two weeks later with only 1034 miles on it. I reached out to GM through the dealer and proposed three solutions: 1) replace the transmission with a new one, 2) replace the car with a new one, or 3) extend the warranty on the transmission for the duration of my ownership. The issue was caused by metal filings in the transmission, but unfortunately, GM did not inspect the entire transmission to ensure that the issue was limited to the area where the filings were found. As a customer, I expected a brand new car to be free of issues. GM's proposed solution is to replace part of the housing and two solenoids, and they have offered to make one car payment for me. It's worth noting that I purchased this new car because my previous car, a Nissan Altima, had a transmission failure at 150,000 miles. Does anyone have any suggestions?
