Land rover Freelander 2002 problems
The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.
After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).
After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

Common Land rover Freelander 2002 problems
The Land Rover Freelander, produced between 1997 and 2006, has been known for several common problems that have affected its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues, based on the search results:
- Handbrake Problem (1997-2003 cars): The handbrake ratchet mechanism on some Freelanders built between October 1997 and February 2001 was not tight enough, leading to the possibility of the brakes loosening and allowing the car to roll on uneven surfaces.
- Diagnostic Connector Problem (1997-2003 petrol cars): On some petrol Freelanders built between July 2000 and March 2002, the diagnostic connector didn't meet the required safety levels and had to be changed.
- Head Gasket Problems (1997-2003 1.8 petrol cars): Blown head gaskets on first-generation 1.8-litre petrol models were a common problem, particularly if the coolant level fell too low, leading to water in the oil as a sign of an impending issue.
- Child Lock Problems (1997-2003 cars): An issue with the child lock on some cars built between July and September 2002 allowed the left-hand rear door to be opened from the inside even if the child lock was switched on.
- Airbag Problem (2003-2006 cars): On some Freelanders built between August and October 2004, the deflector panel in the passenger air-bag module was not to the correct specification, leading to potential problems with airbag deployment.
- Suspension and Steering Tracking Alignment Issues: Suspension and steering tracking alignment issues have been reported, causing excessive and uneven wheel alignment, leading to premature tyre wear. Anti-roll bars are especially prone to wear, and imprecise handling during a test drive may indicate this issue.
- Power Steering Problems: Whining sounds from the power steering pump or impediments in the wheel's full turning motion can indicate issues with the steering rack.
- Sunroof Issues: Problems with the sunroof have been reported, including jamming and water damage.
- Freelander Bodywork: The Freelander's soft-roader design and low ground clearance make it susceptible to bodywork damage, especially if driven frequently near the coast or off-road. Check for signs of damage, such as gashes, scrapes, or loose rock plates.
- Rear Suspension Problem (1997-2003 cars): Some models built between June 1997 and June 1998 had problems with their rear suspension due to an issue with the welding process, which could cause the rear hub assembly to fracture and lead to the car deviating from a straight line on the road.
- Front Seat Problems (1997-2003 cars): Some Freelanders built between August 2000 and February 2001 had issues with the front seats, which sometimes didn't latch properly after using the tip lever, causing the backrest to attempt to fold forward if the vehicle was brought to a sudden stop.
These common problems can help potential buyers and owners of the Land Rover Freelander to be aware of the potential issues they may face and take necessary precautions to maintain their vehicles properly.
What are the common faults of a Land Rover Freelander?
What are the common problems with a Freelander? Amongst the most commonly reported problems are suspension and steering tracking alignment issues, causing excessive and uneven wheel alignment, which shows up as uneven and premature tyre wear.
Is Land Rover Freelander 2002 a good car?
The Freelander is not as luxurious nor as rugged as it's more expensive cousins, but it's surprisingly fun to drive and gets decent power and gas mileage for a six-cylinder compact SUV.
Are Land Rover Freelander reliable?
The Freelander 2 ranked 19th in our Driver Power 2017 used car survey, and was in the top 10 for safety, comfort, practicality and handling. But while 22nd for reliability is also great, 83rd for running costs isn't.
Is a Land Rover Freelander expensive to maintain?
Land Rover servicing is generally reasonable compared with other premium brands such as Mercedes, but there's a big, 10-year service to consider that covers the timing belt, as well as all of the fluids for the engine, gearbox and four-wheel drive system. This can run to more than £1000.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-03
- VIN: SALNY22282A
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I JUST PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM A GENTLEMAN. HE HAD PURCHASED THE VEHICLE TWO YEARS AGO AT 88,000 MILES, AND STARTED HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE TRANSMISSION ABOUT TWO MONTHS AGO. ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO THE GENTLEMAN HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO HIS SERVICE CENTER WHO THEN NOTIFIED HIM THAT HIS TRANSMISSION NEEDS REPLACING. I HAVE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE AND PLAN TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. IT DOES SEEM A BIT EARLY FOR A TWO OWNER VEHICLE AT 110,000 TO NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. IT WAS WELL CARED FOR NOT ABUSED. *TR
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-12-08
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: WHAT IS TO SAY THAT HAS NOT ALREADY BEEN SAID ABOUT THIS NIGHTMARE! I HAVE REPLACED EVERYTHING ON THIS CAR: POWER STEERING SYSTEM, ENGINE MANIFOLD, COOLANT RESERVOIR, WATER PUMP, RADIATOR, BRAKES 2X, CAMSHAFT AND CRANKSHAFT SENSOR, CRANKSHAFT PULLEY, TIMING BELT, AND NOW I AM LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE THE SAME TRANSMISSION FAILURE HAPPENING THAT EVERYONE ELSE WHO OWNS THIS JUNK EXPERIENCES. THIS IS NOT TO MENTION THAT THE SUNROOF DOES NOT WORK, THE PASSENGER DOOR LOCK, AND 3 OF THE 5 POWER WINDOWS DO NOT WORK EITHER. IN THE LAST YEAR ALONE I HAVE PUT MORE THAN $3000+ INTO THIS THING, AND THAT IS BUT A FRACTION OF TOTAL I HAVE PUT INTO IT DURING OWNERSHIP..AND THE BLUE BOOK VALUE IS LESS THAN $5000 AT BEST! WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS HOW ANGRY IT MAKES ME, AND HOW PATHETIC IT IS OF LAND ROVER TO KNOWINGLY IGNORE THE PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THE SUFFERING THAT OWNERS OF IT HAVE TO ENDURE. THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM ALONE SHOULD HAVE A MANDATORY RECALL FORCED ON LAND ROVER TO FIX FOR ALL FREELANDERS, AND THAT SHOULD JUST BE THE BEGINNING! I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY LAND ROVER TECHNICIANS HAVE BLATANTLY TOLD ME THAT LR KNOWS THESE ARE A MONEY PIT NIGHTMARE FULL OF DEFECTS, AND THAT THEY HATE TO WORK ON THEM AND FEEL BAD FOR US. WHEN WILL THIS SORT OF TREATMENT BY BIG CORPORATIONS END? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO STANDING BEHIND YOUR PRODUCT? WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ASSIGNED TO ENFORCE RULES GOVERNING THIS SORT OF THING ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING FOR THE CONSUMER? I COULD GO ON AND ON ABOUT THIS NIGHTMARE, TRUST ME, BUT I AM TOO WORKED UP AT THIS POINT AS IT IS. PLEASE NHTSA, DO SOMETHING, ANYTHING FOR US UNFORTUNATE FREELANDER OWNERS! *TR
EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-16
- VIN: SALNY22232A
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE BRAKE LIGHTS SOMETIMES WORK AND SOMETIMES DO NOT WORK (CITED IN 2 INCIDENTS BY THE POLICE). ALL PARTS ARE FINE (BY CHECK-UP OF A REPAIR WORKSHOP), AND NO REPAIR CAN BE POSSIBLY DONE. PROBABLY, THE HEIGHT OF THE BRAKE LIGHTS ABOVE THE GROUND IS TOO LOW, SO THAT IT IS SOMETIMES TOO DAMP OR WET (AFTER SNOW OR RAIN) FOR THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO WORK PROPERLY. WHEN THEY DRY UP, THEY WORK AGAIN. NEXT, THE 2 BRAKE LIGHTS ARE ON THE 2 CORNERS OF THE BUMPER, AND THE CENTRAL BRAKE LIGHT IS HIGH ON THE TAILGATE. THEORETICALLY, THE 3 BRAKE LIGHTS GIVE WARNING ENOUGH WHEN THE CAR STOPS. HOWEVER, THERE ARE 2 TAIL LIGHTS ARE HIGH ON THE FENDERS (THE 2 SIDES OF THE CAR'S TAILGATE), RELATIVELY FAR AWAY FROM THE 2 BRAKE LIGHTS ON THE BUMPER. THE 2 TAIL LIGHTS GIVE A WRONG IMPRESSION TO ANY DRIVERS BEHIND THIS CAR, AND LET THOSE DRIVERS MISUNDERSTAND THE TAIL LIGHTS TO BE THE BRAKE LIGHTS (EVEN THE 2 POLICE OFFICERS MISUNDERSTOOD IN THE 2 INCIDENTS). THIS WILL CAUSE COLLISION IN REALITY. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION WHO CONFIRMED THAT THE ENGINE COOLANT WAS CONSUMING PREMATURELY AND THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE OF A LEAK. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE THERMOSTAT, THE WATER PUMP, AND THE MOTOR FAN REGULATOR; HOWEVER THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 96,000.
STEERING,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-06-22
- VIN: SALNY22252A
- Components: STEERING,WHEELS
- Summary: WE WERE TRAVELING ABOUT 35 MPH WHEN WE HAD TO MAKE A SUDDEN AND HARD STOP AS A CAR ALMOST PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF US. THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE MOVED BACK ABOUT THREE INCHES AND WAS RUBBING AGAINST THE TIRE WELL. THE BRAKES WERE MAKING A HORRENDOUS NOISE. WE HAD TO BE TOWED TO A REPAIR SHOP. THE RIGHT FRONT CONTROL ARM THAT SUPPORTS THE TIRE WAS CORRODED AND RUSTED OUT TO THE POINT IT COLLAPSED AND BENT. WE WERE LUCKY WE WEREN'T IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. IF WE HAD BEEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED I DON'T KNOW WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED. IT COST $426.00 TO BE REPAIRED. THE REPAIR SHOP GAVE ME THE DEFECTIVE PART SO I COULD CONTACT LAND ROVER AS THEY SAID THIS NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED. I CONTACTED LAND ROVER AND EMAILED THEM PICTURES OF THE PART. THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T INVESTIGATE FURTHER WITHOUT HAVING THE CAR SHIPPED TO THE UNITED KINGDOM. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT! I HAVE THE PART AND WOULD BE HAPPY TO SEND IT TO THE NHTSA. I AM SURE THERE ARE OTHER FREELANDERS OUT THERE BEING DRIVEN WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM AND THEY ARE SERIOUS ACCIDENTS JUST WAITING TO HAPPEN. *TR

- Summary: TO BEGIN, PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW IN 2002 AND CONSISTENT MAINTENANCE AT LAND ROVER DEALERSHIP SINCE PURCHASED. FIRST ISSUE IS THE ENGINE, SEEMS TO MAKE NOISE LIKE A DIESEL LOUD AND VIBRATES. TOLD THAT THE ENGINE WAS OK FOR OVER 2 YEARS THEN NOW ALL OF A SUDDEN THE ENGINE HAS A LEAK, LEAKS WATER INTO THE ENGINE OIL AREA AND THAT THE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ONLY AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. STILL AN ISSUE. SECONDLY, THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO HAVE ISSUES AFTER THE 2ND YEAR OF OWNERSHIP AND AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS THE WAY THE CAR HANDLES. THIRD AND MOST IMPORTANT, THIS CAR HAS BEEN MAINTENANCED AT DEALERSHIP, NO ACCIDENTS. THE STEERING BEGAN TO WOBBLE AND WHEEL BEGAN TO MOVE AROUND QUITE SUDDENLY. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR INTO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THE BOLTS WITHIN THE STEERING PACK HAD SHEARED OFF AND WERE BROKEN AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I STATED THAT THIS WAS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE COVERED, EVEN THOUGH THE WARRANTY HAS SINCE EXPIRED. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE UNIT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THAT LAND ROVER KNEW ABOUT THE PROBLEMS HOWEVER IT IS NOT THEIR ISSUE TO ASSIST CUSTOMERS. I WANT THESE PROBLEMS FIXED. I CARRY MY GRANDCHILDREN IN THIS CAR, HAVE KEPT IT MAINTENENCED CONSISTENTLY AND ALWAYS AT THE DEALERSHIP . THERE ARE NO ACCIDENTS WITH THIS CAR AND I WANT IT FIXED. I AM GETTING THE RUN AROUND FROM LAND ROVER THAT IT IS MY ISSUE AND NOT THEIRS, WHEN IT IS CLEARLY A DESIGN DEFECT ALL AROUND FOR BOTH THE STEERING PACK AND THE ENGINE ISSUES. *TR

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-11-01
- VIN: SALNY22222A
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: ON NOVEMBER 1ST MY WIFE AND I LEFT LA PROPER HEADED TOWARDS PHOENIX, AZ. WITH THE MILEAGE NOW AT 49,807 AND APPROXIMATELY 2 HOURS OF DRIVING ON I 10 THE CAR WAS LOSING POWER, SO I DID MY BEST TO SAFELY PULL OVER TO THE BREAK DOWN LANE WHICH WAS NEXT TO THE ON RAMP (VERY SCARY). I HAD BEEN DRIVING AT 65 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE CAR WOULD NO LONGER ACCELERATE. I HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK BECAUSE AFTER I LET IT REST A MINUTE OR TWO IT WOULDN'T TURN OVER. WHEN I LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY, NO SMOKE, THE COOLANT TANK WAS FULL, I CHECKED THE OIL DIPSTICK AND IT SEEMED FINE. THERE WERE NO LIGHTS THAT CAME ON INSIDE THE AUTO TO SIGNAL THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG, NO OVERHEATING ETC. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER AND WAS TOLD TO COME BACK NEXT MORNING. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ENGINE BLEW A GASKET AND WAS ADVISED DUE TO DAMAGE TO THE ENGINE WAS TO REPLACE IT. I WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF $10,000.00! I ENDED UP SELLING IT FOR SALVAGE FOR $500 SINCE WE WERE TRAVELING SO FAR AWAY FROM HOME AND THE COST TO TOW IT TO RHODE ISLAND DIDN'T SEEM WORTH IT. SINCE THEN I HAVE CONTACTED LAND ROVER AND HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE RUN AROUND LIKE MANY OTHER OWNERS. I ALSO HAVE HAD THE CHANCE SINCE THIS OCCURRENCE TO CHECK VIA INTERNET THAT THIS IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR THE 2002 FREELANDER. I FEEL THIS ENGINE SHOULD OF BEEN RECALLED. *TR
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-07-20
- VIN: SA1NY22242A
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: I BEGAN ACCELERATING ON A VIADOCK (BRIDGE) WHEN I FELT A SNAP UNDERNEATH ME, AS I REACHED THE PEAK OF THE BRIGDE, THE CAR STALLED OUT AND I BEGAN DESCENDING ON THE BRIDGE WITH MY 2 DAUGHTERS IN THE CAR. IT COMPLETELY STOPPED BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO REACH THE BOTTOM OF THE BRIDGE, WHICH PUT ME IN HARMS WAY OF TRAFFIC COMING OVER THE HILL. I IMMEDIATELY HIT MY HAZARDS AND PRAYED EVERYONE WOULD SEE ME BEFORE REAR ENDING ME. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TOWED. THEN I FOUND OUT IT MY TIMING BELT BROKE; CAUSING MY ENGINE TO SHUT DOWN. TOTAL COST TO FIX WILL BE $4000. I RESEARCHED THIS MAKE AND MODEL AND FOUND THAT HUNDREDS OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED SIMILAR ISSUES. THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF ISSUES WITH THIS PARTICULAR MAKE/MODEL/YEAR. THE REVIEWS ON HOW LAND ROVER HAS BEEN HANDLING THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE ARE MIXED WITH SOME SAYING THEY RECTIFIED THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY AND OTHERS SAYING THEY WOULD NOT EVEN RESPOND TO THEIR COMPLAINTS. I AM NERVOUS TO SEE HOW THEY HANDLE MINE. *TR
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-04-04
- VIN: SALNM22212A
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW AND IT OPERATED WELL UNTIL APROX. 80,000 MI WHEN I WOULD GO THROUGH A RESERVOIR OF COOLANT EVERY 20 MILES. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY WOULD KEEP IT FOR A WEEK, CHARGE ME $2,000 EACH TIME AND SAY THEY COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG. I ADDRESSED THE PROBLEMS DOCUMENTED ON THE INTERNET ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY RESPONDED THAT I SHOULD STOP BELIEVING EVERYTHING I READ ON LINE. ON APRIL 4, 2010 I CHECKED THE OIL AND IT WAS FULL OF COOLANT. THE DEALER SAID THEY STILL COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM BUT THE ENGINE WAS SHOT AND THEY WOULD GIVE ME $800 FOR THE CAR. LAND ROVER HAS BEEN DEFENSIVE AND UNRESPONSIVE IN DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM ALL ALONG. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2011-10-22
- VIN: SALNY22232A
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AWAY FROM MY HOUSE AND THE ENGINE DIED. IT WOULDN'T RESTART AND AFTER ABOUT 2 MINUTES OF TRYING, IT STARTED MAKING A GRINDING NOISE. WHEN I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC, HE SAID IT HAD BLOWN THE HEAD GASKET, THEN THE PISTON ROD HAD COLLAPSED, SO THE ENGINE WAS VIRTUALLY RUINED. THE VEHICLE HAD 96,000 MILES ON IT. LAND ROVER PRODUCED THOUSANDS OF THESE VEHICLES WITH FAULTY ENGINES(THE 2.5 V-6). I ALSO WANT TO KNOW IF THERE IS A CLASS-ACTION LAWSUIT FILED AGAINST LAND ROVER AND HOW TO GET INVOLVED WITH IT. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-09-01
- VIN: SALNM222X2A
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: WE HAVE HAD SEVERAL INCIDENTS WITH MY 2002 LAND ROVER FREELANDER TYPE S OVERHEATING AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOING ON, WE HAVE REGULARLY TAKEN IT TO OUR LOCAL LAND ROVER DEALER TO FIND OUT THE PROBLEM. THE LATEST, NOW AUGUST 2011, THE COOLANT WAS FOUND TO BE LOW, AND A DISCUSSION WITH THE MECHANIC AND THE SHOP PERSON INDICATED THAT THEIR IS NO EXTERNAL LEAKS, AND THAT THE COOLANT MAY BE LEAKING INTO THE ENGINE. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CYLINDERS/HEADS ARE MADE OF DIFFERENT MATERIALS, AND THAT A GAP MAY HAVE FORMED THERE CAUSING THE COOLANT TO LEAK INTO THE ENGINE. I WAS TOLD THAT IF THE COOLANT CONTINUES TO LEAK WITHOUT ANY VISIBLE SIGNS OF EXTERNAL PROBLEMS, THE ENGINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. WE HAVE DONE ALL OF THE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE AS WELL AS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OF REPAIRS FOR THE COOLING - INCLUDING MULTIPLE THERMOSTATS(I BELIEVE WE ARE ON OUR FOURTH ONE, INCLUDING THE ONES UNDER WARRANTY, ETC. THE LATEST DIAGNOSIS IS COOLANT INTO THE ENGINE AND FOULING A CYLINDER. I REPEATED ASKED, SINCE WE WERE UNDER WARRANTY, IF WE HAD A LEMON AND HAVE NOW SEEN THOUSANDS OF POSTINGS ON THE INTERNET RELATING TO THIS PROBLEM, WITH MODELS FROM 2000 TO 2005, THE YEARS THE CAR WAS AVAILABLE IN THE US. IT APPEARS THAT THERE ARE NO VIABLE REPLACEMENT ENGINES AVAILABLE THAT DO NOT HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM SINCE, THE VEHICLE WAS DISCONTINUED IN 2005. BASED ON THE INFORMATION I HAVE GATHERED, IT APPEARS THAT THE ENGINE USED IN THIS VEHICLE WAS OF A FAULTY DESIGN, GIVEN THE FACT THAT A REPLACEMENT WITH OUT THIS PROBLEM IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE RECORD, MY VEHICLE INFO IS AS FOLLOWS: MAKE: LAND ROVER MODEL: FREELANDER TYPE S YEAR: 2002 PURCHASE DATE: 07/2002 I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER, AND I PURCHASED THIS FROM LAND ROVER PORTLAND, PORTLAND OREGON. *TT

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2009-03-17
- VIN: SALNY22252A
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: A CAR MADE TO BREAK DOWN ON YOU. I BOUGHT A LANDROVER FREELANDER 2002 AND BARELY DROVE IT...IT HAD BEEN A LEASED VEHICLE AND WAS WELL TAKEN CARE OF...HOWEVER...IT BROKE DOWN AS SOON AS I GOT IT. FIRST IT WAS A COOLANT PROBLEM, IT OVERHEATED WHILE I WAS DRIVING IT HOME FROM WORK. I LIVE 5 MILES FROM WORK. THE FIRST YEAR I BOUGHT THE CAR I PUT LESS THAN 1000 MILES ON IT AND HAD ALREADY BROUGHT IT IN AT LEAST 3 TIMES FOR PROBLEMS. THE FIRST WAS THE COOLANT, AND THEN I BROUGHT IT IN A FEW TIMES SINCE IT CONSTANTLY HAD THIS FEELING AS IF THE BREAKS WERE BEING APPLIED. IT HAS A HILL DECENT BUTTON THAT WOULD COME ON AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS PART OF THE PROBLEM, BUT IT STILL DID IT REGARDLESS. IT'S AS IF THE BREAKS WERE ON AND WERE STUCK. AND EVERY TIME I BROUGHT IT TO LANDROVER THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND A PROBLEM....OF COURSE NOT. AND THEN I HAD IT IN THERE AND THEY SAID THEY HAD A BUNCH OF "STRANGE" CODES POP UP THEY HADN'T SEEN BEFORE SO THEY JUST "WIPED" THEM AS THE MAN SAID. ??? HE DIDN'T BOTHER TO FIGURE OUT WHY??? NOW...MY CAR HAS BEEN SITTING FOR ALMOST 3 YEARS SINCE I COULDN'T AFFORD TO FIX THE BROKEN TRANSMISSION. I HAVE A TOTAL OF 55350 MILES ON IT..BOUGHT IT AT 43603 IN 2005. ALL I SEE ALL OVER THE INTERNET IS HOW THESE SAME PROBLEMS HAVE KEPT OCCURRING AND NO ONE WAS HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE WORK AND MONEY THAT HAS TO GO INTO FOR FIXING THIS....IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE THAT A COMPANY AS LARGE AS LANDROVER WOULD BE ABLE TO MAKE A CAR THAT WAS BOUND TO BREAK DOWN...AND NOT HAVE TO FIX THE PROBLEMS??? IT ENDS UP COMING OUT OF THE POCKETS OF THE POOR CONSUMERS WHO AT THIS POINT ARE ALL ON THEIR OWN. I'M EXCEPTIONALLY DISAPPOINTED. THIS WAS THE FIRST CAR I EVER BOUGHT...I THOUGHT IT WAS SAFE AND I WAS HAVING A BABY 4 MONTHS LATER. ALL THIS VEHICLE HAS DONE IS MAKE MY LIFE MORE DIFFICULT. THANK YOU LANDROVER...I WILL NEVER EVER BUY A CAR FROM YOU...OR ANYTHING YOU MAKE. YOU HAVE NO HONOR NOT TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR OBVIOUS MISTAKES IN THE CREATION OF THESE CARS. *TR

HE TRIED TO SLAP THE FIRE OUT WITH HIS HANDS AND RECEIVED 3RD DEGREE BURNS DUE TO THIS. HE THEN RAN INSIDE AND RETRIEVED A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND PUT THE FIRE OUT. THE FIRE WAS CONTAINED, BUT THE DAMAGE WAS SO SEVERE, THE VEHICLE WAS DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS. THE FIRE STARTED IN THE WIRING SYSTEM UNDER THE STEERING COLUMN. WE DO HAVE A CASE OPEN WITH LAND ROVER, BUT THEIR REPRESENTATIVE STATED THIS IS ONLY FOR THEIR INTERNAL USE AND NO COMPENSATION WOULD BE MADE. MY SON ONLY OWNED THE PRE-USED VEHICLE FOR ONE MONTH AND HAD ONLY SECURED "LIABILITY" INSURANCE ONLY ON THE VEHICLE UNTIL HIS NEXT PAYCHECK SO HE COULD AFFORD FULL COVERAGE. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT THAT A VEHICLE WOULD CATCH ON FIRE BY ITSELF. WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT HE WAS NOT HARMED FURTHER AND THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT PARKED IN THE GARAGE, BUT WE ARE EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED THAT A VEHICLE WHICH HE OWNED FOR ONLY ONE MONTH WOULD CATCH FIRE AND LAND ROVER WILL NOT OFFER ANY COMPENSATION FOR OUR LOSS. *TR

This is a great car that stands out from other compact SUVs on the market. The seating position is comfortable for passengers and provides excellent visibility. Although I have had some issues with the car, the dealer has been fantastic to work with. As long as there is a dealer nearby, I would highly recommend this car. I have owned other SUVs before, but this one is by far my favorite.

This car is exactly what I was looking for in a mini-SUV and more. Although there are a couple of minor complaints, it's still a great car. Firstly, I have to remember to duck when getting in as the headroom is a bit limited. Secondly, the driver's seat is fixed in a vertical position, which means there isn't much extra headroom once you're in and the rear-view mirror blocks a large portion of your outside field-of-view. However, the Freelander's on-road handling is superb. It drives like a sports car and seems to have plenty of power for my needs, even when fully loaded with the family. Although it cost a little more than I wanted to spend, I definitely feel like I'm bathing in luxury. I can't wait to try it off-road!

You must be very lucky to have gotten so many miles out of your Freelander, even though it's unfortunately dying quickly now. Recently, the transmission lost 2nd gear (just skips right over it now), the sunroof won't open, and the AC just died. However, this Freelander was the first one sold in your state and has had a heck of a great run. Currently with 224,550 miles on it (not a typo), you refuse to put money into it at this stage in its life, so it's time to part ways. After reading everyone's issues with this Land Rover model, you feel like you should fix it up and sell it to the Land Rover museum.

Hey there! Have you checked out the latest SUV on the market? It's definitely worth considering if you're looking for a vehicle that offers great value, performance, and prestige.

I purchased the car second-hand with the expectation of receiving a high-quality vehicle. However, my mechanic informed me that the engine was in poor condition and I have been experiencing coolant leakage. Despite owing $13,000 on the car, dealers are only willing to offer me $7,000 for it. While I could sell it for its retail value of $10,000, I feel guilty doing so due to the known issues with this make and model. It is clear that this vehicle was not manufactured to a high standard. I advise against purchasing it.

Although I have experienced some issues with my car, I have taken it to the shop six times in less than two years, I am confident that the problems have been resolved. The first time the check engine light came on, it was still under warranty, and the cooling system had some issues, which took the dealer three times to figure out. After replacing the hoses, cooling fan, and water pump, the car has been running smoothly. The brakes did wear out unusually fast, tearing into the rotors twice in less than 18 months, but the issue has been resolved. The sunroof clattered, and the back door wouldn't open, but the motor was replaced, and everything is working fine now. Finally, with less than 75k miles, the transmission went out, and the whole thing needed to be replaced. Despite these issues, I am confident in the car's overall performance and reliability.

Land Rover's negligence is unacceptable. Despite having only 60,000 miles on my vehicle, I have had to replace the engine, transmission, heater core, thermostat, exhaust plenum, and rear window actuator (twice). The engine broke due to the use of 'Interference valves', which caused the pistons to smash into them, resulting in the need for a new engine. Land Rover refuses to take responsibility for their mistake. I am considering joining a class action lawsuit to hold them accountable for their actions.

Initial disappointment was derived from poor quality interior, including some elements that did not even match, as well as cheap leather. Additionally, there were disturbing heating elements embedded in the windshield, which have become more distracting with time, and an annoying lurch between first and second gear. Unfortunately, catastrophe struck when I was struck by a hit and run driver. Since February 27th, 2002 (today is June 6th), Land Rover has been unable to supply parts to repair the vehicle! Furthermore, the national customer service has ranged from disinterested to rude.

The car was purchased used with 24,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, the transmission failed after only three days of ownership. Additionally, one of the rear windows malfunctioned and required repair. While driving to the nearest dealership in Grand Rapids, MI, the engine seized. The dealership confirmed that a head gasket had gone and had to contact the factory in Europe for further assistance. Over the past few years, the sunroof has required repair on three separate occasions, window motors have been replaced, speakers have been replaced, and the air conditioner has never worked. Unfortunately, both head gaskets have now failed at only 60,000 miles. Despite purchasing the car for its reliability, it has proven to be quite the opposite.
