2016 Bmw X3 problems
The BMW X3 is an SUV manufactured by BMW since 2003, based on the BMW 5 Series platform. Now in its third generation, BMW markets the car as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company's proprietary descriptor for its X-line luxury vehicles.
The first-generation X3 was designed by BMW in conjunction with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria—who also manufactured all X3s under contract to BMW. BMW manufactured the second-generation X3 at their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States. Starting with the third generation, BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant began production of the X3, alongside the Spartanburg plant, after the facility underwent a major upgrade to prepare for the X3 production, replacing the long-running 3 Series production in the plant. About 76,000 units will be manufactured there annually.
The car was the first mid-size, premium SUV on the market. In 2008, BMW started competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (renamed GLC-Class since 2016), and numerous other SUVs in this segment. The X3 is smaller than the X5 and X6, and bigger than the X1 and the X2.
An all-electric variant is sold as the BMW iX3.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-10
- VIN: 5UXWX9C57G0
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I got an engine light and found a recall for BMW's online so I made the service call. Once there at Fields Winter Park, I was asked to sign a service agreement where i would pay $219.95 for the diagnostic if the issue didn't fall into a recall. Well, I saw the recall in my computer, in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, for a coolant thermostast, and also one for the engine Coolant Pump, so I knew it should be covered, so I signed. Later they said that the issue was the thermostat, and that since they couldn't find a recall on the BMW USA website, I would be responsible for payment. I did bring my laptop and phone and showed them both recalls. They say they do not go by any other website than theirs, which conveniently does not reflect any recall on my vehicle. When I said that I was looking at the information in an official website, they said said that technically, I set the appointment because of an engine light, not a recall. I politely mentioned that technicalities on this case come down to wording from a consumer that trusts the dealership of a brand but should not be used against such consumer in any tricky and deceiving way. I called for an engine light and saw two recalls for BMW of my year. On official sites. I was overwhelmed while talking to both a service manager and the general manager, in the presence of also the service representative. They said to me that the engine light would NOT be triggered by a coolant pump issue (which is not true). And they said that even when Safety Recall Report 24V-608 is in the NHTSA website, it is not active on their side and therefore they do not need to do anything about it, until I receive a letter to come to have it looked at. So they denied any action until i received a letter and even then, they said I would not be welcome to do business there. So basically they did not take any action on the recall! And then they gave me my car back with a large scratch in the front bumper and fender!
SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-28
- VIN: 5UXWX9C51G0
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
- Summary: We have had several occurrences of the following issue during the last several months. When slowing the vehicle down at a traffic light/stop with the goal of bringing the vehicle to a complete halt, as the vehicle decelerates to almost a stop with the foot firmly on the brake pedal, there have been several instances where the engine suddenly revs up and the vehicle lunges forward instead of stopping. It is an intermittent issue which is very hard to predict. It has occurred on flat roads, or going downhill, a couple of times with the air conditioner on. It's a split second lunge needing one to apply brakes even harder. Since at other times, this doesn't happen it's very concerning since we're questioning the reliability of the vehicle. It's a matter of chance that this may cause rearending the vehicle ahead. Thankfully, that hasn't happened but have come within a hair of happening.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- VIN: 5UXWX9C57G0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: When coming to a stop, my trunk continues to open and will not close unless you turn the car off and get out and close it. I tried to replace the battery in my key fob, but it will not work. The trunk button when you hold it down, says “remote battery, change battery.”. The rear hatch continues to open every time you stop your car unless you hold the trunk button down. This is extremely unsafe having things, people, or items in your car or trunk because it opens while operating your car.
FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-11
- VIN: 5UXWY3C59G0
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
- Summary: The contact owns a 2016 BMW X3. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the "Drive Train Malfunction" message was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler needed to be replaced but confirmed that parts were not yet available. The failure recurred with an abnormal fuel odor detected while the vehicle was parked inside the garage. Additionally, fuel was leaking from underneath the vehicle and the check engine warning light illuminated while driving. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was determined that there was a pinhole in the fuel hose and the fuel hose was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 66,869. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-15
- VIN:
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: This vehicle shuts down the engine when stopped at a stop sign or light. The engine resumes when you press on the brake or gas peddle. But sometimes, the engine will turn back on for no apparent reason. That is not an issue of concern. BUT, sometimes, when the engine turns on automatically, it will drop the transmission into PARK. So when you attempt to apply gas, the car will not move forward as it is not in gear. This is intermittent. My German Auto repair shop has observed the issue and spoken with many other shops who have reported the same issue with the X3. BMW does not have a solution to the problem. The driver never knows if the car will move forward after a traffic stop, as it is not obvious that the transmission has dropped into park until you attempt to move forward. Instead of using this engine turn-off feature of the vehicle, they suggest turning it off to avoid the problem. That is a gas-saving feature of the car.
FIRERELATED PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-22
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 5uxwy3c50g0
- Components: FIRERELATED
- Summary: The contact owned a 2016 BMW X3. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V907000 (Fuel System, Diesel) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the dealer had previously performed an engine inspection and pressure test for the coolant system due to coolant loss with the low coolant warning light illuminated. The contact had added a quart of coolant. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with a loss of power warning message displayed. The contact's wife was able to pull over on the shoulder of the roadway and noticed there was smoke coming from underneath the hood before it caught fire. The contact's wife was able to safely exit the vehicle. The fire department arrived on the scene and was able to extinguish the fire. Police and fire department reports were filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and then to the contact's residence. The dealer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The vehicle was not yet deemed totaled by the insurance company. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that an inspector would perform an inspection to determine the cause of the fire. The failure mileage was approximately 88,500. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-15
- VIN: 5UXWY3C56G0
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: In early August 2021, the fuel pump on our BMW X3 failed in the middle of an intersection and the car stopped completely. No way to move to one side until a flatbed wrecker came. Fuel pumps will fail after 100,000 miles and we above that figure, Which is why it was surprising then to have the same problem four months later when we had multiple error codes come up on the same car. At least this time I could pull over to the side off the road. The problem was a failing fuel pump. When a pump fails the car stops. If we had been on a highway we would have been rear ended and potentially killed. I shared my concern with a contact at BMW Corporate who only noted that the repair was under extended warranty. One BMW service rep I spoke to said that fuel pump failures are a known issue and yet in my experience there still seems to be a major problem with the part.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-01-02
- VIN: 5UXWX9C53G0

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-16
- VIN: 5UXWX9C54G0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: IT HAD BEEN RAINING IN MY AREA THE WEEK OF 4/16/2021. ON THE EVENING OF 4/16/2021 MY REAR HATCH CONTROL AND REAR HATCH ALARM STARTED MALFUNCTIONING. I DISCOVERED WATER HAD GOTTEN INTO THE ELECTRICAL COMPARTMENT IN THE REAR HATCH. I BROUGHT MY SUV TO THE SHOP/DEALER FOR REPAIR AND WAS TOLD THE SUNROOF FRAME WAS CRACKED ALLOWING WATER PENETRATION FROM THE HEADLINER TO THE REAR HATCH CAUSING THE HATCH CONTROL UNIT TO MALFUNCTION. MY VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND I HAVE NEVER STORED OR TRANSPORTED ANYTHING ON MY ROOF. THE REPAIR SHOP/DEALER WAS UNABLE TO OFFER A REASON FOR WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE SUNROOF FRAME TO CRACK. THE ONLY EXPLANATION THAT MAKES SENSE IS THAT THE SUNROOF WAS EITHER INSTALLED IMPROPERLY BY THE MANUFACTURER OR THE SUNROOF FRAME IS DEFECTIVE. IT WAS $4,298.08 TO REPAIR THE SUNROOF AND CONTROL UNIT. THIS IS MOST CONCERNING AS MY SUV IS LESS THAN 5 YEARS OLD, ONLY HAS 81,448 MILES AND THERE IS NO RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE FOR THE SUNROOF.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-12
- VIN: 5UXWX9C50G0
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I DROVE MY 2016 BMW X3 FOR ABOUT 30 MILES ON THE HIGHWAY. I EXITED THE HIGHWAY AND CAME TO A STOP AT A LIGHT. MY REAR HATCH OPENED WHILE AT THE LIGHT AND MY VEHICLE WAS IN DRIVE. I HAD TWO DOGS IN THE REAR AREA THAT NEARLY JUMPED OUT. WE DID DETERMINED THAT A KEY FOB IN A POCKET PROBABLY WAS PRESSED. WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN DRIVE AND THE DOORS ARE LOCKED THERE IS NO REASON A REAR HATCH SHOULD BE ABLE TO OPEN. I WAS ABLE TO REENACT THIS EXACT SAME SITUATION WITH THE VEHICLE IN DRIVE, AND THE DOORS LOCKED BY PUSHING THE HATCH BUTTON. ITDOES ALLOW THE REAR HATCH TO FULLY OPEN EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN DRIVE.
POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

THEN SHE FELL ASLEEP. IN THIS PROCESS THE SEAT BELT SOME HOW GOT WRAPPED AROUND HER. WHEN WE STOPPED FOR A BATHROOM BREAK WE UNBUCKLED THE BELT TO FIND OUT THAT THE BELT WAS WRAPPED AROUND HERE AND WE COULD NOT UNWRAP IT. THE MORE WE TRIED TO PULL OUT THE MORE TIGHTER IT GOT. SHE WAS IN SEVERE PAIN. WE HAD TO BORROW A SCISSOR FROM THE GAS STATION TO CUT THE BELT.SEE THE PIC WITH THE SCAR. SHE WAS IN PAIN FOR NEXT FEW DAYS. WE TOOK THE CAR TO DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT BELT WORKED AS DESIGNED. THE CHILD LOCK KICKED IN AND THE LOCK WONT RELEASE UNTIL THE BELT GOES ALL THE WAY IN. BELT COULD NOT GO ALL THE WAY IN BECAUSE IT WAS WRAPPED AROUND HER. THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN SOME MANUAL BUTTON/SWITCH TO RELEASE THE BELT.

- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:GAS RECIRCULATION VALVE (EGR VALVE)
- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

I've driven this car on snowy mountain roads, poorly plowed residential roads, dirt trails, and all sorts of terrain, and I've never gotten stuck. It's always been incredibly responsive, all while feeling luxurious. I bought this car because I wanted something comparable to a Subaru but nicer. The diesel engine is powerful, and the fuel tank is very decently sized, allowing me to go longer with an economic sized motor. This car is both safe and fun. I highly recommend it.

This vehicle is a pleasure to operate, especially in sport mode. The engine is nimble and responsive, with superb handling and braking. The interior is spacious and comfortable, with excellent fit and finish. All controls and interfaces are well-designed and intuitive. The exterior is beautiful, with the always pleasing spread nostrils design of the front and central kidney grills, and fantastic looking low profile wheels. The only criticism of the exterior is the under-designed rear with the understated exhaust. It would be great if the X3 exhaust could adapt the more aggressive dual rectilinear design of the X5. I do wish there was an easily accessible USB connector on the dash, and the heat button for the steering wheel needs to be moved to a more accessible location (as it was for 2018). Lastly, it would be a nice touch if every M sport version of a BMW came with a complimentary pair of fine peccary leather fingerless driving gloves. :)

This is my fourth BMW, and by far my favorite. I love how responsive it is, and it gets much better gas mileage than any of my previous BMWs thanks to the way the car automatically cuts off at stops when it idles. I was a bit disconcerted at first, but you can turn it off if you need immediate acceleration.

This is a wonderful sporty SUV with good fuel economy compared to full-size models like the X5. It also comes with great options packages that make driving a breeze.

You have a very nice car there! It's been two years since you got it and it's still a pleasure to drive. The gas mileage is great and it's very comfortable on the highway. You can even fit five adults comfortably in it, which is impressive. One of the nicest features is the gear shift in the center console, which is a bit unusual but adds to the charm. Although the seats can be a bit too firm and cause discomfort over long trips, overall it's a great car to have.

My wife and I leased a 2016 BMW X3 3.5 X drive with the M sports package for a road trip. However, we found the front seats to be uncomfortable, especially for taller individuals. Despite being 6'2

In my experience with my X3, which I purchased new from BMW, I have encountered several issues that required replacement parts. These include a fuse in the charging station, the back-up camera, a part of the sunroof mechanism, and now a warning on the dashboard indicating an issue with the seatbelt. Additionally, there was an acceleration issue that required work on the transmission, although the dealership did not acknowledge it. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in BMW's commitment to quality and luxury. While my personal experience may not have been ideal, I recognize that every vehicle is unique and I would not hesitate to recommend BMW to others.

I've owned an Infinity for years and decided it was time for a change, so I got the BMW X3 35i. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. The instrumental panel is quite dark, making it difficult to see, even during the day. Additionally, there is no separation for the navigation display to reduce lights when driving at night. If you reduce the display for navigation, the instrument panel dulls as well, making it hard to see how fast you are going. There is also no display for tire pressure. Despite these issues, I appreciate the car's design and features. However, I am considering going back to Infinity due to the lack of options on the BMW and the need to fill up the gas tank every three days. Overall, I am not completely satisfied with my purchase, but I am hopeful that these issues can be resolved.

As a proud 7-time BMW owner, I have always owned 3-Series vehicles until I purchased my first South Carolina built BMW, the X3. Although it is my first non-German built BMW, I am learning to appreciate its unique features. However, I have noticed that the optional safety features, such as the sub-par headlights, lack of fender turn signals, and Goodyear run-flats, are not up to par. The anemic 4-cylinder engine struggles to move the 5,000-pound vehicle, especially on hills. But, if you put the vehicle into SPORTS MODE, the performance improves greatly, canceling out several short-throw gears on the transmission and marrying the engine to the gearbox in a much faster pace. The transmission is electronic and highly responsive. The parking brake is also an electronic tab function, which is easy to use. BMWs are known for their precision and total control, but the X3 4-cylinder version compromises safety by making it optional instead of standard. Basic safety features such as headlights, turn signal indicators, rim/tire sizes, backup camera, and braking safety features should be standard on all BMWs. Safety is available for sale, but please note that entry level models come with cheap plastic seats called SENSA-TEC, which are not very comfortable. To get decent leather seats that are secured in comfort, you'll need to purchase the SPORT PACKAGE. Unfortunately, the rear seats are even worse, making most park benches feel like a luxury compared to the rear seats on a 2016 X3. The X3 comes with Goodyear tires (depending on the model/version/year), but we recommend Pirelli's or Michelin's. Ride quality is average, but we recommend upgrading to Michelin's for a better interstate ride. The X3 has a stumpy, short, and fairly boxy look (unlike the X5, which has a far classier look to it), and it can be bumpy and pull when driving on the interstate. Braking is average, so plan ahead and control your stop before you need to. The Panoramic Sunroof is a must-have option and is excellent in design. It's massive and a great distraction from the discomfort of the rear seats. While this may not be the BMW experience you were expecting, it's important to note that the X3 is still a reliable and safe option. We recommend test driving the Toyota RAV 4 as well, as it exceeds all handling and safety features when compared to the BMW X3, factoring in price and reliability. On the other hand, BMW's paint and fit and finish were superior to Toyota's cheaper paint and gel coating. In just six (6) weeks, we have had a few issues with our X3. The rear hatch latch broke off (it's plastic instead of metal), we had to change out the bad tires, and the driver's side door won't stay open when opened (you have to walk it out into position). Of great concern is that we had to accelerate this weekend to change lanes on an interstate and nothing happened, even though the gas pedal was fully depressed. This is a major concern and will be looked at later this week. I would not purchase another X3 BMW at any price. It does not feel like a real German-built BMW. If you decide on an X3, I recommend adding the essential packages so that you have the basic safety items now marketed only as options. Going with the 35i X3 will provide superior engine performance, and adding a SPORTS PACKAGE will change the experience from rental car performance to some personal pride of ownership.

This is a fantastic small luxury SUV, or SAV as BMW calls it. It's fun to drive, easy to park, and makes loading and unloading groceries a breeze. However, there is one issue that needs addressing. The rear lift door has developed a rattle and has needed adjustment by the service department twice in the last ninety days. According to the service adviser, this is a common problem and may be a design flaw. It's disappointing to experience this issue in a vehicle that is marketed for its quiet interior. Despite this, I still love almost everything about this vehicle, and I'm sure the service department will be able to resolve the issue.
