The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is a mid-size SUV produced by the Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi Motors using the Pajero nameplate since 1996 that has spanned over three generations and based on the Triton pickup truck. Mitsubishi has formerly used the Mitsubishi Challenger (Japanese: 三菱・チャレンジャー, Hepburn: Mitsubishi Charenjā) name in Japan and some international markets, but since the third generation, the Pajero Sport/Montero Sport/Shogun Sport was the name used instead.

First generation (K80/K90/PA/PA II; 1996)

For the SUV sold alongside the first generation Montero Sport in Latin American markets, see Mitsubishi Montero Outlander.

Production began in Japan in 1996, and was available for most export markets by 1997, where it was variously known as the Challenger, Pajero Sport in Europe, Montero Sport in North America, South America, Spain and the Philippines, Nativa in parts of Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East, Shogun Sport in the United Kingdom, and Strada G-Wagon in Thailand. Based on the Strada pickup truck of the same vintage, sharing many components and some body panels (i.e. front doors), the first-generation Pajero Sport was also built on the second-generation Pajero wheelbase, and served as a smaller model to the larger Pajero.

Like the Pajero, it featured independent front suspension with torsion bars and a live rear axle. In addition to numerous facelifts over the years, there was a major suspension change from rear leaf to coil springs in late 2000. As its popularity increased, local assembly for foreign markets was introduced in China in 2003, and Brazil in 2006. Sales were discontinued in Japan in 2003. In the United States, where it was superseded by the Endeavor, sales ended in 2004. In Canada the Montero Sport continued to be sold alongside the Endeavor until 2008. Sales in central and western Europe ended in 2008, with the introduction of the second generation Pajero/Montero Sport. In Japan, it was sold at a specific retail chain called Car Plaza.

The 3-litre V6 is the most commonly used engine; it produces 175 hp (130 kW; 177 PS) at 5,000 rpm. The North American market received petrol V6 engines during all years of production while a petrol 2.4-litre engine was offered on base models from 1997 through 1999 in the United States and for additional years in Canada. Markets outside of North America also had a variety of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines to choose between.

Common Problems with the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 is a popular midsize SUV in the Philippines, known for its exterior design and interior space. However, like any car, it is prone to certain issues in the long run. Here are some of the most common problems with the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009, based on complaints from owners.

  1. Sudden Unintended Acceleration (SUA)

Sudden unintended acceleration (SUA) incidents have been reported in the Philippines involving the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009. Concerns regarding the safety of the car model were raised, and several class action lawsuits against Mitsubishi Motors Philippines were filed. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is currently investigating the matter.

  1. Gunk Build-Up in the Intake

Being a modern diesel SUV, the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 is prone to gunk build-up in its exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve and intake. If left alone, this can incur more damage to the engine’s internals. A clogged up EGR valve can result in a check engine light and acceleration problems, making it difficult for the SUV to reach peak power.

  1. Loose Valve Clearances

The 4N15 engine in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 uses a shim-over-bucket valve adjuster. Over time, the valve shims can get loose, causing them to no longer keep the right valve clearance. This can lead to engine performance issues and even catastrophic engine failure if not addressed promptly.

  1. Valve Cover Leaks

Both valve covers in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 tend to have issues, but the one on the passenger side is more problematic. Almost all Monteros have an oil leak from this area, which can drip down onto the exhaust and cause a burning smell. Freshly rebuilt motors may not leak immediately, but they are likely to develop this issue over time

  1. Cracked Exhaust Manifold

A cracked exhaust manifold is a common issue in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009. This problem is not unique to this model, but it seems to be more prevalent in the Gen 3 Montero. The crack usually occurs on the bottom of the manifold and can lead to engine performance issues if not addressed promptly

  1. Faulty Gauges

The fuel gauge and temperature gauge in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 are known to be problematic. The fuel gauge might read lower than the actual fuel level, while the temperature gauge might not accurately reflect the engine temperature. These issues can be caused by a faulty resistor in the gauge cluster

  1. Transfer Case Sensor Issues

The front four-wheel drive lights in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 can flash when shifting between two different Mo modes in the transfer case. This issue is caused by a sensor problem or a confused transfer case, which can lead to drivetrain issues if not addressed promptly

  1. Engine Overheating

The Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009's engine can overheat, especially during long drives or in heavy traffic. This issue can be caused by a faulty thermostat, low coolant level, or a malfunctioning cooling fan.

  1. Transmission Issues

Transmission issues are common in the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009, with some owners reporting problems with shifting or the transmission slipping. These issues can be caused by worn-out clutch plates, a faulty torque converter, or low transmission fluid levels.

  1. Steering Issues

Some Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 owners have reported issues with the power steering, including a whining or groaning noise when turning the steering wheel. This issue can be caused by low power steering fluid levels or a faulty power steering pump.

In conclusion, while the Mitsubishi Montero Sport 2009 is a popular midsize SUV in the Philippines, it is prone to certain issues that owners should be aware of. Regular maintenance and prompt addressing of these issues can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

What is the problem of Mitsubishi Montero?

Some common problems of the Mitsubishi Montero include a broken crankshaft pulley bolt, brake failure due to a faulty hydraulic booster, transmission problems, and various electrical issues.

How many miles can a Mitsubishi Montero last?

I have a few customers well into the 300k mile range, and a lot of customers in the 200s. Really it all depends on how well the vehicle is maintained, but it is unusual to see any major failures even at this mileage provided the basic maintenance is done on time.

Why did they stop making Mitsubishi Montero?

Unfortunately for Mitsubishi, Montero popularity waned in its later years as buyers started to focus more on crossovers than capable, truck-based SUVs like the Montero — so Mitsubishi cancelled the Montero in the U.S. market following the 2006 model year, and devoted itself instead to selling crossovers.

Is Montero Sport fuel efficient?

Fuel economy

During our testing, the midsize SUV was able to return about 7km/L in heavy city traffic and 17.7km/L in real-world highway conditions. In a mixed city and highway driving conditions, the Montero Sport was able to put up a fuel economy figure of 14.4km/L.

AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-12-16
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: AT ABOUT 6PM ON DECEMBER 16, 2010 MY DAD WAS PARALLEL PARKING ALONG THE SIDE OF THE ROAD OUTSIDE OUR HOUSE, WHEN HIS NOVEMBER 2009 MITSUBISHI MONTERO SPORT (4X2 AUTOMATIC WHICH JUST HAD ITS 5000 KM SERVICE) SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD WITH VERY HIGH ENGINE REVOLUTION (VERY LOUD) AND COLLIDED WITH A MERCEDES BENZ E230 PARKED JUST 6 METERS AWAY ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD (THE IMPACT WAS SO STRONG THAT THE E230 MOVED ABOUT 3 METERS AS EVIDENCED BY THE TIRE SKID MARKS)! THIS HAPPENED EVEN WHEN MY DAD WAS STEPPING HARD ON THE BRAKES! AFTER COLLIDING WITH THE MERCEDES, THE MONTERO DID NOT STOP BUT CONTINUED FORWARD AT HIGH SPEED (STILL MY FATHER WAS STEPPING HARD ON THE BRAKES!). MY FATHER SAW A PASSING TOYOTA REVO INFRONT OF HIM AND A TRICYCLE INFRONT OF THE REVO. SO HE DECIDED TO HIT AN ELECTRIC POST (68 METERS AWAY FROM OUR HOUSE) TO STOP THE MONTERO! FORTUNATELY, HE MISSED THE ELECTRIC POST BY HALF A METER AND INSTEAD SIDE SWIPED OUR NEIGHBOR'S WALL AND THEN COLLIDED WITH A PALM TREE. AFTER HITTING THE TREE, MY FATHER SAID THAT THE MONTERO STILL JERKED FORWARD A COUPLE OF TIMES BEFORE STOPPING. AFTER COLLIDING WITH THE MERCEDES BENZ, SIDE SWIPING A WALL, AND HITTING A TREE, THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY! IT WAS ONLY VERY FORTUNATE THAT MY FATHER SHIFTED HIS BODY TO THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SO HIS HEAD DID NOT HIT THE WINDSHIELD. MITSUBISHI BLAMED THE FLOOR MAT IN ITS OFFICIAL INVESTIGATION REPORT! THE SAME TYPE OF FLOOR MAT THEY ARE SELLING IN THEIR DEALERSHIP! MITSUBISHI DID NOT EVEN MENTION IN ITS OFFICIAL INVESTIGATION REPORT WHY THE AIRBAGS IN MY DAD'S MONTERO DID NOT DEPLOY DURING THE ACCIDENT. MY DAD REJECTED MITSUBISHI'S OFFICIAL REPORT BUT HE ACCEPTED THE OFFER FROM MITSUBISHI TO BUY BACK HIS MONTERO AT 80% OF ORIGINAL COST. MITSUBISHI WILL NOT COVER THE DAMAGE TO THE MERCEDES BENZ BECAUSE THEY SAID THAT THE ACCIDENT WAS NOT THE FAULT OF THE MONTERO. *TR
