2012 Gmc Terrain problems
The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.
First generation (2010)
The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.
The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

Common 2012 Gmc Terrain problems
The 2012 GMC Terrain has several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most prevalent issues is engine problems, particularly excessive oil consumption, which affects around 100,000-mile vehicles. GMC has addressed this issue by issuing a special coverage adjustment, extending the warranty to 120,000 miles. However, out-of-warranty repairs can cost over $2,500.
Another common problem is water leaks into the cabin, which also occurs around 100,000 miles. The sources of these leaks can be a clogged sunroof drain line or a worn-out windshield gasket. Fixing the issue costs between $250 and $400.
Cracked transfer cases have also been reported by owners around 85,000 miles. Some owners have experienced multiple cracks, and replacing the part costs approximately $1,500.
There are four recalls for the 2012 GMC Terrain, but none of them are mechanically serious. These recalls include tire pressure monitoring, seat height adjuster bolts, keys that can be removed while not in park, and headlight reflections.
In addition to these issues, there have been complaints about the vehicle's reliability, with some owners reporting frequent mechanical failures and high ownership costs. The 2012 GMC Terrain has a lifespan of around 150,000 miles, but this is significantly shorter than that of more reliable rivals, such as the RAV4. Regular annual maintenance costs are also higher than average, at $575 per year, according to Repair Pal.
The Terrain's 4-cylinder engine has been criticized for weak performance, and the optional V6 is not much better. However, the Terrain is a safe SUV, receiving 4 out of 5 stars in government crash tests and a Top Safety Pick Award. It also comes standard with a rearview camera, which is helpful for parking. Fuel economy is also good, with up to 26 MPG combined.
In summary, the 2012 GMC Terrain has several common problems, including engine issues, water leaks, and cracked transfer cases. These issues can be costly to repair, particularly if they occur outside of the warranty period. The vehicle's reliability ratings are also poor, and it has a shorter lifespan than many of its competitors. However, the Terrain has some positive attributes, such as good fuel economy, a safe design, and a comfortable ride.

The dealership did an excellent job on the work providing a video to show work being done. Now this month of April, I received another check engine light stating the P0013 code stands for “Exhaust “B” Camshaft Position Actuator Circuit/Open (Bank 1).” There is not a recall from the manufacturer but according to dealership they've received a bulletin in regards to this issue. According to the dealership it will cost in excess of $500 to repair. Absolutely not true. There are a thousand videos on what causes this and even how to repair it from the same mechanics that work within these dealerships. This issue is a safety issue because if not repaired it causes damage to your engine. This code lets you know that you will start experiencing loss of power, trouble starting your vehicle, the stalling/picking up speed all at the same time. Some of these issues have been caused from the issue of the oil consumption problem associated with the Terrain's.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-25
- VIN: 2GKALMEK7C6
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle is 2012 GMC Terrain. Oil changes on my vehicle we kept up and i had no major issues with this vehicle. I had an oil change done about a month before i went to start my car and all the lights came on and my car would rumble and wouldn't stay started and was longer drivable. After towing it a service shop they stated the following: The timing chains are damaged, skipped teeth, metal debris found in oil and screen of intake and exhaust camshaft solenoids due to many oil leaks coming form engine and serious internal issues w/engine we recommend replacing the engine. Est cost, 11,061. I had no reason to think my car was in any trouble, as it was driving fine with no problems. I received no such recall letter or phone call and no mention from the dealership i bought the car from back in 2018 that this was an issue or that it was "taken care of" if I had i wouldn't have paid over $20,000. into my car. Reading several complaints online about this exact issue is all new to me. Knowing i could have been driving a vehicle and it could have started a fire in my engine is crazy to think. Because I may have been driving a car with a serious recall on it. I am at a loss right now, financially i am screwed.

I really appreciate everything about this car. The design, both interior and exterior, are fantastic. It's also incredibly comfortable and handles really well.
-
Hi there! I noticed that you mentioned poor visibility out the back and that the gas mileage could be better on the V6, but you also mentioned that it tows well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
-
Sorry to hear about your experience with the V4 Terrain. It seems like it's not meeting your expectations in terms of fuel efficiency and performance. Have you considered bringing it back to the dealership to see if they can address the issues with the engine and transmission? On the bright side, it's great to hear that you find the vehicle itself to be nice. Hopefully, the dealership can help resolve the issues you're experiencing and make your driving experience more enjoyable.
-
The fuel mileage of this vehicle seems to be incorrect. Although it is rated at 22/32, the best I can get is 22 on the road.

You have a 2012 Terrain SLE-1 with the V6 engine, FWD and a towbar, without a sunroof or any other fancy features. It's great to hear that you have had no problems with the SUV, just regular oil changes and tire replacements. The seats are comfortable and the radio is the best you've had in any car or SUV, even better than a 2019 model! Sounds like a great purchase, congratulations on the sale!

It sounds like you've had a frustrating experience with GMC service. They want to change the engine due to oil consumption, which is disappointing. It's understandable that you feel like they don't care about their mistake, but I'm sure they want to make things right. It's possible that this is a production defect, but it's important to give them the benefit of the doubt. If you're not satisfied with their service, it might be best to consider other options.

Hi there!

The accident I had with my Terrain AWD was quite severe. Unfortunately, the airbags did not deploy, and I received a concussion from hitting my head on the steering wheel. If the airbags had deployed, I may have avoided the hospital stay and the extensive damage to my vehicle. Despite repairs at the dealer, the AWD transaxle remained faulty. Due to these issues, I made the decision to sell the vehicle after 12 months. It is my opinion that the safety of the airbags and AWD transaxle in the Terrain model should be reevaluated.

In 2020, a judge in Florida ruled against GMC, stating that the GMC Terrain with its Ecotech engine has faulty piston rings that cause oil burning. We advise caution if considering purchasing this vehicle.

We purchased a used 2012 GMC Terrain with 32000 miles on it. It ran well until we noticed a clattering sound at around 90000 miles. Upon checking the oil, we found that it was more than 2 quarts low. After adding oil, we noticed that it was low again in just 3 weeks. We started keeping a record of when we added oil and found that it was necessary every 700 miles, which was not acceptable. We took it to a mechanic who added an oil additive to the engine, which seemed to help somewhat. Although the oil lasted a little longer, it was still not ideal. As of now, we still have the car with 162000 miles on it, but we plan to sell it as soon as we can afford to.
