The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
  • VIN: 1GT49REYXLF
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Well, we ended up having a problem with our transmission in our 2020 truck. I am the wife and I was driving down the highway and all of a sudden the truck started bucking and went down to 35 mph. I was in a middle lane on the highway when this happened which Was very scary! Then I was stranded along side the highway until I could get help. Here we found that our transmission went out already only after four years, which is crazy. Very crazy! We bought this truck because we were told with the weight of this truck and all that it would pull out 42 foot fifth wheel we have. So of course we did use this truck to pull our trailer and now four years later we have been without a truck because we cannot even find a transmission with our transmission code of OMEF. Now today we found a possibility which is going to cost $7000 which is Love Ludacris! We buy a $65,000 truck just for years ago and now had to put $7000 out for a transmission. Is there anything we can do to rectify this situation??

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-03
  • VIN: 1GT49REY5LF
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I was travelling south bound on the highway at 70 mph when out of no where the left rear tire failed. The tread peeled back like an alligator skin and tore apart the side of my truck and caused me to fishtail all over the highway. I was able to avoid colliding with other vehicles on the road and miraculously made it to the shoulder of the highway. The tire is a Goodyear Wrangler TrailRunner AT in a size LT275/65/R20. I still have the remaining parts of the tire. My vehicle is still under manufacturer warranty, but the GMC dealer turned me away and told me I had to deal with Goodyear directly. I reached out to Goodyear to file a claim for the tire failure and damages related to it. They have been ignoring me for over a week, so I have filed a claim with my insurance company to handle the damages. I'm currently waiting to get my truck into the shop for repairs. There were no indications of any issues with the tire. I had them rotated as recommended by the manufacturer and kept the tire pressure at the recommended levels through the dealer when my vehicle was serviced. The TPMS light came on as soon as the tire failed and lost pressure showing the vehicle tire pressure monitoring system was working properly when the tire failed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-27
  • VIN: 1GT49PEY5LF
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The rear window of my 2020 GMC Sierra developed major water leaks across the entire window in 2021. GM has documented this issue with a service bulletin and the dealership has documented their resolution to the first repair under warranty. GM knows of this manufacturing issue and continued to install a faulty back window. Not only did the back window leak large amounts of water into the cab causing a potential dangerous mold issue, the security and integrity of the back window breaking or falling onto rear passengers is a major safety hazard. The integrity of the back window falling out into traffic is another safety hazard to consider. GM issued a service bulletin for leaking back windows for their Sierra trucks due to the known problems. GM has documented their problem and remedied a quick inexpensive solution. Many other GM Sierra truck owners have documented their issues and frustration with GM, and the BBB. GM has invested this issue and found the rear window plastic frame was installed or will develop stress cracked in the frame. GM’s remedy is to use a silicon window caulk and apply the silicon between the outside top section of the glass to the cab. This did not address the safety aspect of the situation. It only delayed the issue temporarily until vehicle owners were out of warranty. GM’s solution usually only last for one or two years before the issue develops again. After GM and the dearship siliconed the rear window per the service bulletin in 2021, my vehicle once again developed the same leak as before. The dealer ship once again inspected the rear window, but this time told me the issue and replaced the entire rear window because of the “stress cracks”. It’s amazing that GM wants to replace the rear window at the customer’s expense since I am out of warranty. It preposterous that GM knew of this safety issue and created a temporary correction that would last a short time until vehicle owners are out of warranty and stick them with a bill.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-10
  • VIN: 1GT49PEY4LF
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: There is an issue that is causing the batteries to die. This in return causes the Vehicle to go into Limp home mode with no warning. The "issue" was supposed to be resolved by the Dealer in March 2022. The resolution was that one battery was bad. The vehicle is equipped with two batteries. Each of which is sufficient to run the vehicle. A single battery failure should not have caused the truck to have a power limitation. Furthermore the issue was not resolved and General Motors and the Local dealership refuse to continue to work on the issue. This is even after filling complaints with BBB. As of November 2022 the issue has cause both batteries to go bad. The dealer has refused to work on the vehicle and it has been out of service for more than 30 days. Secondary issue. The dealer has refused to work on the vehicle but computer is locked by GM so that only GM equipment can see full scope of codes. This means I can not have third parties work on the vehicle. This is can get the vehicle stuck in areas where there is not GM facilities and GM will not provide any assistance as it is not under warranty. This has also prevented me from finding the actual resolution to the problem.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-28
  • VIN: 1GT49REYXLF
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2020 GMC Sierra 2500 equipped with Goodyear Tires, Tire Line: Wrangler Trail Runner, Tire Size: LT275/65/R20, DOT Number: PJ0TJB1V 2319. The contact stated that within a three-day period while hauling a camper on a road trip, all four tires experienced a failure. The contact indicated that the first failure occurred while driving approximately 60 MPH; the rear driver’s side tire experienced a blowout. During the failure, the driver’s side rear quarter panel was severely damaged. The contact stated that later on while driving at an undisclosed speed, the rear passenger’s side tire experienced a similar blowout causing damage to the passenger’s side rear quarter panel. Additionally, on another occasion while driving approximately 50 MPH on the same road trip, the front passenger’s side tire experienced tread separation. While at the service center the mechanic discovered that the front driver’s side tire had also experienced partial tread separation. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 25,400.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-25
  • VIN: 1GT49PEY8LF
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I took my vehicle into the local dealership two weeks ago for the DPF emissions voluntary recall. Prior to the service I was getting 16.6 mpg for the 42000 miles on my truck. After the service, for the ~200 miles driven on same route and conditions commuting to and from work I have only been able to achieve ~13 mpg. There has been no other changes to my vehicle or operating conditions. When I took the vehicle in the advisor mentioned that it may take awhile for the service because “we have to download the update wirelessly.” While researching this issue the recall document specifically warns against wireless download of the update. I am not sure if this may be the result of not following the correct process or not and I am headed back to the dealer today. I also found several others posting on the diesel forums about similar significant loss of mpg after the update. Losing almost 25% fuel efficiency after the update is unacceptable and reflects the my previous experience of efficiency loss during an actual regeneration cycle prior to the update. The vehicle is acting as if it is running in a constant regeneration cycle. Unsure if this may lead to dangerous driving condition due to excessive stress and wear on the affected parts and engine.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-09
  • VIN: 1GT49PEY4LF
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: DEF tank system failure. Vehicle is under warranty, 18 months old, (purchased 08/20) with 20,000 miles. 6 WEEKS AGO I took to dealer who informed me that there are no DEF tanks available and don't know when they will be available. This is a hazard: if I am on a trip and the system shuts off I could be stranded anywhere with the reduced speed that the DEF system creates. If this system is designed to shut off (with warning) there should be ample supplies at all GMC dealers for repair. If there aren't ample supplies the system should NOT shut the truck down. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD THAT IS PREVENTABLE!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-22
  • VIN: 1GT49REY5LF
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Truck has had multiple issues related to the electrical system and truck modules. It is my opinion that these are all related to voltage issues or module problems. i have had multiple infotainment issues with delays loading, freezing up etc. dealer has ran updates and checks with nothing found. In October around $35k miles the truck Radio would not work if i used the push button start. if i shut the truck off opened the door and let everything reset i could push the start button in the truck and the radio would work majority of the time. The next day i went out to a completely dead truck. I talked to my service department at the local dealer and they said i would need to bring it in but suggested i disconnect the batteries and recharge the batteries. after doing so everything started working correctly. it fixed my radio problem and never went dead again. since then i have experienced popping noises through the speakers when playing music occasionally. over the last few weeks i noticed the engine does not attempt to increase cold idle speed until i press the brake to put it in gear. January 22nd i hit the autostart button and it did not work. i started the truck and it had CEL, Traction control, park brake and wrench, lights on with service emissions, and power reduced messages displayed. Truck is running odd. codes present are (ENGINE GMLAN)P0118 - engine coolant temp circuit high voltage, (BRAKES GMLAN_ABS) U0401- invalid data from engine control module, P0562- system voltage low, (HVAC CONTROLS GMLAN_HVAC) B1325 - . control module power circuit. Truck is starting and charging fine. No connection issues at batteries. There are many TSB's and many complaints regarding similar issues. common brake and emissions faults with minor differences. Module failures, communication faults, and or electrical faults are likely causing all of these similar issues. they need to be categorized as the same failure group which will show GM has a bigger issue.

STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-17
  • VIN: 1GT49REYXLF
  • Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: While driving my 2020 GMC 2500 Denali with the Duramax Diesel engine, the power assist for the steering and brakes failed without any warning. This made the truck nearly impossible to steer and stop. Luckily, I was able to avoid a collision and get the truck stopped in a safe location. The truck is currently being towed to Rivard GMC in Tampa, Fl. Doing an internet search, I found this problem has happened to others as well. Please ask GM to rectify this extremely dangerous defect.

  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW:CURTAIN:INFLATOR
  • Summary: General Motors, LLC. (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT5 and XT6, Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 and Traverse and GMC Acadia and Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 vehicles. The diffuser component of the Roof-Rail Air Bag (RRAB) inflator may not have been properly crimped to the inflator and could separate from the inflator during air bag deployment.
  • Consequence: If the diffuser separates from the inflator during deployment, RRAB performance may be degraded, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspect RRAB modules, free of charge. The recall began September 3, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, or Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300. GM's number for this recall is N202305380.

  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:HOOD
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles previously recalled under 20V-142. Some of the vehicles in 20V-324 were not part of Recall 20V-142 but received defect parts during another service (typically during collision repair). The hood-latch striker wires on replacement hoods installed for Safety Recall 20V-142 may not have been heat-treated properly, possibly causing them to fracture.
  • Consequence: If a striker wire fractures, the hood may open unexpectedly while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the hood assembly, free of charge. For hoods sold over the counter, dealers will contact customers with instructions for hood replacement. The recall began July 7, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N202306490.

When the front seat belt pretensioners deploy, hot gas may vent through an opening in the pretensioner bracket, possibly igniting the carpet.
  • Consequence: A vehicle fire could result if materials ignite inside the vehicle.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will close off the opening in the pretensioner bracket, free of charge. The recall began December 13, 2019.
