2020 Ford Transit connect problems

ford logo

The Ford Transit Connect is a compact panel van sold by Ford since 2002. Developed by Ford of Europe, the model line replaced sedan-based vans (Ford Escort and Ford Courier vans) with a dedicated commercial vehicle platform. The model line is the second-smallest vehicle of the Ford Transit range, slotted between the Ford Transit Courier LAV and the Ford Transit Custom LCV/MPV. In line with other Ford Transit variants, passenger-oriented models (in Europe) are marketed as the Ford Tourneo Connect with side windows and rear seats.

The first and second-generation Transit Connect has been imported to North America from the 2010 model year. To circumvent the 25% "chicken tax" on imported light trucks, all examples have been imported as passenger vans, with cargo vans converted to the intended configuration after their importation. In the region, the Transit Connect does not have a direct predecessor; the closest vehicle to its size was the standard-length Ford Aerostar cargo van, which ceased production in 1997.

The first-generation Transit Connect was assembled by Ford Otosan (Kocaeli, Turkey) along with Ford Romania (Craiova, Romania). For the second generation, Ford of Europe shifted production to its Ford Valencia Body and Assembly facility (Almussafes, Valencia, Spain). For 2022, a third generation of the Tourneo Connect was released; based on the Volkswagen Caddy, the model line is assembled by Volkswagen in Poland.

  6. Improper Adhesive on Door Panels:
    • Improper adhesive used on plastic door panels leading to loose panels, increasing the risk of accidents due to potential detachment.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-28
  • VIN: NM0LS7E21L1
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: At highway speeds (55-70), light brake pressure resulted in major frontend vibration and front left caliper seized. After pulling off the road, the front left wheel rim was too hot to touch. Vibration and seized caliper could result in loss of control of vehicle while braking, especially at highway speeds. Repair shop initially replaced the caliper and overhauled the brakes. Problem was not resolved, and same symptoms recurred after less than 100 miles. Mechanic determined that Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Module had failed. No warning lights, and no inspection by anyone but my mechanic. Replacement ABS module from Ford Dealer was installed by independent mechanic and problem is resolved. Ford Dealer reported two other ABS module replacements same week as mine and internet search identified others with same problem (ABS module failure). My vehicle is four years old and has around 40,000 miles. It seems to be a premature ABS module failure causing collateral damage (e.g. caliper) with multiple reports of same problem.

Negative 2020 Ford Transit connect car reviews

  1. Broderick Hauck 2025-01-03

Ford Motor Company bought the vehicle back from us and we are thrilled that they did the right thing.

  2. Isidro Heller 2024-08-29

I love going on bicycle rides and races, but sometimes they take me too far away to commute in just one day. That's why I always bring my bicycle tools and spare parts with me. Instead of lugging my bike up to my hotel room every night, I can leave it safely locked inside my Transit Connect. While I originally wanted a utility van, the passenger van has been a great alternative since it was the only option available in December 2020. One of the best things about it is that it's small enough to fit in my garage, and I get an impressive 28 mpg for my combined driving. Plus, I can easily fit two bicycles, spare parts, weekend luggage, and even one other person. However, it's not the most exciting vehicle to drive, and it doesn't come with a spare tire or jack. Additionally, I've had some issues with poor customer service at the dealership.

  3. Justice Reichert 2024-08-27

Overall, this vehicle has performed below expectations. However, the fuel economy is particularly disappointing.

  4. Christian Trantow 2024-08-06

This vehicle can be a bit challenging to drive, especially on the highway. The transmission can feel a bit sluggish at times, but with some practice, it can be managed. One thing to note is that the AC turns off when you cut the vehicle off, so you may need to switch it off and on again to get it to blow. The windshield is quite large, which can be a bit overwhelming when facing the sun, but the sun visors do help to some extent. Overall, I understand that this vehicle may not be everyone's cup of tea, but with some adjustments, it can be a decent ride.

  5. Hassan Zboncak 2024-07-25

My company has provided me with this vehicle, but I would not recommend getting the vinyl seats. Regardless of which seats you choose, if you're 5'11

Positive 2020 Ford Transit connect car reviews

  1. Dayton Leffler 2024-11-29

    Great mileage!

  2. Jevon Bartell 2024-09-20

I'm glad to hear that you've had no issues with your vehicle! Thank you for choosing Ford and for sharing your positive experience with us.

  3. Jordi Cassin 2024-08-16

This car gets great gas mileage, with 20 miles per gallon around town and 28 miles per gallon on the highway. It also has plenty of seating and cargo space, as well as ample headroom. Despite being a 4-cylinder, it has a peppy performance.

  4. Judson Zulauf 2024-08-14

We've been driving the 2020 Connect XL 2.0L Cargo for 3 years now and, while it hasn't been perfect, we've found ways to make it work for us. We did have some trouble with the windshield cracking twice in less than 4 months, which was a bit frustrating. As for the seats, they weren't our favorite, but we were able to improve them by using 50mm skateboard wheels under the front seat frame rails. This lifted the rear of the seat and moved it forward, making it more comfortable. Our main goal is to turn this van into a sports van by upgrading the suspension. We plan to upgrade parts like the Bilstein B6 Struts, Bilstein B6 shocks, Super-pro Volvo end links, Hardrace 28mm sway bar and Cobra coil springs. We also added 19'' Axe wheels with 245/40 Nokian tires, which made a big difference in the handling and performance of the van. We even added a drop in K&N air filter and performance NGK sparkplugs to give it an extra boost. We also added some personal touches, like diamond-tucked carbon fiber to the door panel blanks, as well as a custom dash cover and seat covers. Overall, we're happy with the van and it gets decent fuel economy at 24 City and 27 Highway.

  5. Quincy Corwin 2024-06-24

The custom manual wheel chair for my wife fits perfectly in our vehicle, thanks to its low deck and roomy back. I removed the rear seats to make it even more accommodating. The 4ft ceiling height is ideal for her chair with its head gear, and the liftgate works like an awning to protect us from the rain when loading and unloading. Living in the mountainous region of NC, we have found that it easily handles the hills and curves. Our vehicle is like a little sports car in a big box, and we are confident in its ability to transport us and our equipment safely and efficiently.
