The Mazda Premacy (Japanese: マツダ・プレマシー, Hepburn: Matsuda Puremashī) is a passenger minivan that was built by the Japanese manufacturer Mazda from 1999 to 2018.

The first generation Premacy was built in Japan and exported to Europe and Asia. A rebadged version was sold by Ford in a few Asian markets (including Japan) as the Ford Ixion or Ixion MAV.

The second generation onward is sold outside Japan as the Mazda5. Ford Lio Ho in Taiwan, which assembles Mazda5 for the local market, adapted a re-badged version as the Ford i-Max from 2007 until 2011.

The first generation Premacy was a two- or three-row, five- or seven-passenger vehicle, while the second generation adds a third row of seats for up to six passengers in American form, and seven passengers outside the United States. Both generations feature near-flat floors, folding or removable second row, and fold-flat rear seats.

Common 2009 Mazda Mazda5 problems

The 2009 Mazda Mazda5 has several common problems that have been reported by owners. These issues include a slipping clutch, air conditioning troubles, and noise from the chassis.

Slipping clutch: A significant number of 2009 Mazda5 owners have reported a slipping clutch problem, which typically occurs around 50,000 miles.

Air conditioning issues: Some 2009 Mazda5 owners have experienced air conditioning problems, with the A/C making a loud, vibrating noise when turned on, especially after the vehicle reaches around 40,000 miles.

Chassis noise: Noise from the chassis is another common problem reported by Mazda5 owners, including a loud banging noise from the minivan.

In addition to these problems, the 2009 Mazda Mazda5 has also been reported to have issues with power locking assist mechanisms on the sliding doors, which may not work in cold or freezing temperatures. This can lead to the door trying to lock even when the vehicle is in motion, creating an unsafe driving situation.

Furthermore, the 2009 Mazda Mazda5 may experience suspension problems, with the sway bar bushings wearing out and making a grinding noise in hot weather, especially when going over speed bumps. This issue can lead to inner tire tread wear, requiring ball joint repairs and potentially affecting the vehicle's handling and safety.

Lastly, rust can appear quickly around the back fenders, which can affect the vehicle's appearance and potentially lead to more significant structural issues over time.

In conclusion, the 2009 Mazda Mazda5 has several common problems that owners should be aware of, including a slipping clutch, air conditioning issues, chassis noise, power locking assist mechanism failures, suspension problems, and rust. These issues can impact the vehicle's performance, safety, and overall value, and potential buyers should consider these factors when considering a used 2009 Mazda Mazda5.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-05-12
  • VIN: JM1CR293990
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD 2 TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING VALVES BREAK INTO 2 PARTS EACH IN THE PAST 4 MONTHS. THE LATEST WAS WHEN I WAS DRIVING TODAY ON CITY STREETS. THE TIRE PRESSURE ALARM WENT OFF SO I STOPPED THE CAR TO CHECK THE TIRES. WHEN I TOUCHED ONE OF THE VALVES IT JUST CAME APART IN MY HAND AND I WAS HOLDING PART OF THE VALVE, THE REST OF IT WAS STILL IN THE TIRE. THE TIRE THEN COMPLETELY DEFLATED IN ABOUT 2 SECONDS. THIS COULD BE EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS. IF YOU LOST ALL TIRE PRESSURE IN A FEW SECONDS AT 65 MPH YOU COULD EASILY LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR AND GET IN AN ACCIDENT. I NO LONGER TRUST THE 2 VALVES THAT HAVE YET TO BREAK SO I AM GOING TO BE PROACTIVE AND REPLACE THEM BEFORE THEY DO BREAK AT AN INOPPORTUNE TIME. I SEE A LOT OF OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET. I INCLUDED A PICTURE OF THE PIECE OF THE VALVE THAT BROKE OFF INTO MY HAND.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-07-18
  • VIN: JM1CR29L790
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON CONTROL PANEL IS FLASHING WHEN I START THE ENGINE AFTER A WORKING DAY. NO RHYME OR REASON AT ALL. THERE IS NO ANY IMPACTION FROM OUTSIDE AND/OR GOING OVER BUMPERS. IT COMES IN AND OUT IN THE FIRST DAY AND TWO, AND THEN IT'S STAYED ON AND FLASHED THE CODE 19, WHICH ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL MEANS RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE - MEMORY FULL. SO I TOOK IT TO MAZDA DEALERSHIP AND DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AT MY EXPENSE. TIRES,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-01-08
  • VIN: JM1CR29L690
  • Components: TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR ILLUMINATED AND I CHECKED TO SEE IF THE TIRE WAS FLAT. IT WAS NOT. I DROVE TO A FILLING STATION TO TOP OFF THE PRESSURE AND AS I WAS DRIVING AWAY FROM THE AIR PUMP THE VALVE STEM TO THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE BROKE AND THE TIRE DEFLATED INSTANTLY. THE VALVE STEM WAS CORRODED. APPARENTLY IT WAS INITIALLY CRACKED SLIGHTLY CAUSING THE TIRE TO FIRST LOSE AIR SLOWLY. THEN, UPON MANIPULATION FROM THE PUMP FITTING, THE STEM WAS FURTHER DAMAGED CAUSING THE STEM TO BREAK OFF. I DID HAVE THIS HAPPEN ONCE BEFORE. THE EXPLANATION FROM A SERVICE STATION WAS THE SAME. IN THIS MODEL THE VALVE STEM AND PRESSURE SENSOR IS A SINGLE ASSEMBLY SO WHEN THE TIRE IS CHANGED THE VALVE STEM IS NOT CHANGED EVEN IF IT IS OLD AND SHOWING SIGNS OF AGING. OTHERWISE THE COST OF REPLACING A TIRE WOULD BE NEARLY DOUBLED. THE SENSOR ITSELF WILL LAST MUCH LONGER THAN ITS VALVE STEM. CONSEQUENTLY, THE STEMS DO EVENTUALLY CORRODE AND BREAK OFF AT INCONVENIENT, POSSIBLY DANGEROUS, TIMES. THE SERVICE STATIONS SAY THIS IS COMMON FOR THIS VINTAGE OF MAZDA. THE SERVICE REP SAID MINE WAS THE SECOND THEY REPAIRED ON THE VERY SAME DAY! AS I SAID, THIS HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE WHEN A STEM BROKE OFF AS I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY HOME PARKING SPOT. A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE THE THIS REPORTED EVENT, I TOOK A LONG ROAD TRIP AND A SUDDEN DEFLATION LIKE THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEED. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TRAGIC! I HAVE CHECKED ON-LINE AND HAVE FOUND MANY IDENTICAL COMPLAINTS. IF IT HAS NOT BEEN REPORTED TO NHTSA BEFORE NOW, I AM QUITE AMAZED. *TR

STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-06-13
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: JM1CR29L590
  • Components: STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: GAS PEDAL IS TOO CLOSE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. I OFTEN HAVE ACCELERATED DEPRESSING THE WRONG PEDAL DUE TO THE EXTREME CLOSE PROXIMITY. WHILE PULLING UP TO THE GARAGE HIT THE GAS PEDAL INSTEAD OF THE BREAKS AND CAUSED BOTH VEHICLE AND GARAGE DAMAGE. I HAVE THOUGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT THIS MANY TIMES. THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED AND THE GARAGE MASONRY HAS BRICKS AND BLOCK WORK DAMAGE. TWO OF MY WHEELS HAVE BEEN WARPED. I HAVE ONLY A MEDIUM FOOT SIZE 10. THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR ANYONE. *TR

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-03
  • VIN: JM1CR293490
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: WENT TO INFLATE TIRES, VALVE STEM BROKE AND TIRE WENT COMPLETELY FLAT. I WAS LUCKY THAT THIS HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WASN'T MOVING - I HAVE READ ABOUT THE VALVES FAILING AT HIGHWAY SPEED, WHEN IT COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. *TR
2014-04-29

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-02-07
  • VIN: JM1CR29L390
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: KEPT HEARING A RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM REAR DRIVER'S SIDE, TOOK THE CAR IN TWO TIMES B/C OF THIS. TURNED OUT TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR SEAT RUBBER BUSHING WHICH IS REQUIRING THE DEALER TO GRIND THE ARCH WELD ON THE SPRING COIL. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ABOUT THIS VERY PROBLEM, WHICH INDICATED THAT THEY HAVE REDESIGNED THE PARTS IN NEWER MODELS SO THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A DESIGN PROBLEM FOR WHICH I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR AND THAT IT IS NOT DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ON THE CAR. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THEY SHOULD FIX THE PARTS DUE TO THEIR FAULTY MANUFACTURING/DESIGN? *JS

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-03-11
  • VIN: JM1CR29L090
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: THE THIRD ROW SEATBELTS IN MY '09 MAZDA 5 BEING TOTALLY UNUSABLE FOR CHILDREN AND SOME ADULTS, INCLUDING MYSELF. THE SEATBELTS ARE POSITIONED SO HIGH AND SO FAR FORWARD THAT THEY ARE COMPLETELY UNSAFE, THEREFORE UNUSABLE. THE PROBLEM IS MASKED WITH A HIGH BACK BOOSTER SEAT BUT EVEN WITH A HIGH BACK BOOSTER SEAT, WHEN I JERKED AGAINST THE SEATBELT TO MAKE IT LOCK, THERE WAS AT LEAST 6 INCHES OF MOTION FORWARD AND SIDE-TO-SIDE BEFORE THE SEATBELT LOCKED. WHEN I TRIED THIS WITH A HIGH BACK BOOSTER IN THE 2ND ROW, THERE WAS MOTION ONLY 2 INCHES FORWARD AND NONE SIDE-TO-SIDE. THE SEATBELT PROBLEM IS TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE AND AM SHOCKED THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL. THERE ALSO ISN'T LATCH IN THE THIRD ROW SO HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO PUT ANYONE BACK THERE? *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 104,000.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-03-16
  • VIN: JM1CR293X90
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: IN THIS CASE I LEFT MY LIGHTS ON CAUSING THE BATTERY TO RUN DOWN. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR IS WHEN THERE IS NO POWER IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO OPEN THE REAR SLIDING DOORS OR TAILGATE. ONLY THE DRIVER'S DOOR OPENS WITH A KEY AND YOU CANNOT OPEN THE REAR DOORS FROM THE INSIDE WITHOUT POWER. IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT THAT DISABLES THE POWER SYSTEM THESE DOORS CANNOT BE OPENED AND PASSENGERS (ESPECIALLY CHILDREN WHO ARE IN SAFETY SEATS) CAN BE TRAPPED. THERE ARE 3 ROWS OF 2 BUCKET SEATS PER ROW. I FEEL THIS CAR IS A DEATH TRAP AND WOULD SERIOUSLY RECOMMEND IT NOT BE PURCHASED. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-04-05

Negative 2009 Mazda Mazda5 car reviews

  1. Brook Friesen 2025-01-06

We bought this car for our family because of the dual sliding doors, size, and fuel economy. Unfortunately, we experienced some issues with the car. Within the first 2000 miles, the A/C went out, and it happened again four months later. We had to take the car to the dealer four times for A/C repairs alone. In the 14 months we had this vehicle, we also had to replace the radio because the sound wouldn't come on. The check engine light came on twice, which required two more visits to the dealer for engine jerking and sluggishness. Up to the day we traded this vehicle, it would wobble or bounce on perfect roads as if it were out of line or the wheels were not balanced. We had those items checked many times, with no changes.

  2. Amir Rice 2024-10-20

Hello! I am writing a follow-up review on this car. I gave it a stellar rating a year ago, but unfortunately, I would not recommend anyone to buy this car based on that review. We have had the car for two years and have driven 40,000 miles. Although I still love the design and the extra space in the back, as well as the ability to seat 6 when needed, the car has proven to be unreliable and unsafe. Here is a list of issues we have had: the rotors are shot, we had to replace the rear shocks at 36,500 miles (Mazda would not cover it under warranty), we have replaced tires, the gas cap broke, and the rear wiper broke. This car shimmys, squeaks, and feels unsafe.

  3. Jeffry Klein 2024-08-14

My wife and I were shopping for a MINI van and test drove the Mazda 5 three times. We even borrowed my mother's Mazda 5 for a week. Although the Mazda 5 is a van that many people love, we found that it wobbles at highway speeds, which caused motion sickness for the passengers. We also noticed that the Mazda 3 has a similar backend wobble, but it is more pronounced in the Mazda 5. We realized that the wobble is only noticeable at highway speeds, and since 90% of our driving is on the highway, we decided that this wasn't the van for us.

  4. Brant Wolff 2024-06-03

The 2.3 L engine has been a disappointment for me. After driving 12,000 km, I noticed that the oil level was very low before my second service. It is important to check the oil level after oil replacement and sometime after the next 4000 km, as Mazda engines tend to consume a lot of oil. After the warranty period, around 100,000 km, the orange check engine light may go off, which the service manager informed me is normal. Despite this, the service manager is still knowledgeable and helpful. It is worth noting that the engine consumes 1 liter of oil every 5000 km. It is advisable to carefully consider before purchasing this car.

Hi there! I wanted to let you know that some Mazda5 owners have reported issues with the suspension system. It might be a good idea to keep an eye on your tires and consider getting them checked every 2kmi. You may also want to be prepared for some occasional suspension repairs, including new shocks and wheels. Thanks for reading!

  1. Cleve Johnson 2024-11-26

I am so happy with this car! Although I've only had it for a few days, I wish I had gotten it 2 years ago when my baby was an infant. The sliding doors and second row bucket seats are by far the best features of this vehicle. Access to the carseat is perfect and it is so easy to get the baby in and out. Having bucket seats (with armrests) gives plenty of elbow room. The center console in the second row is also great for feeding the baby in the car. I love the storage compartment under the seats too. During a 4 hour trip, I enjoyed the armrest and steering wheel controls. The hatchback allows easy access (I even changed the baby back there!). I absolutely love this car!

  2. Doug Walker 2024-11-03

We were in need of a family car that could accommodate our needs and also had a manual transmission. After searching for options, we found the perfect fit with this car that not only has a 3rd row of seats but also meets all our requirements. It has ample cargo space, great safety features, a peppy little engine that makes driving fun, good gas mileage, and fantastic brakes. I used to think that the crossover class was going in the wrong direction by combining a car and an SUV. However, this car is a perfect blend of a Mazda3 5-door and a van, which surprisingly gives it a 'best of both worlds' feel.

  3. Percy Donnelly 2024-10-22

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We purchased our car in September after selling our 2002 Town and Country LXi and trading in our 08 Honda Odyssey. We were looking for something affordable with better gas mileage and a 3rd row seat for when we needed it. Our Odyssey averaged 16mpg, the T&C 17mpg, but this car averages 23mpg and we've even seen 27+ on the highway! The 5-speed manual is incredibly easy to drive and the suspension tuning is second to none, it handles all bumps with ease. The brakes are fantastic and the steering response is spot on. As expected, acceleration isn't a strong point due to the power to weight ratio, but we're happy with the trade-off for better MPG. We did find that the 3's ride wasn't to our liking. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts with us!

We have been driving our Mazda 5 since February and we stumbled upon it accidentally after driving Hondas and Acuras forever! The CRV felt too big and the Acura RSX was too pricey, but the Mazda 5 was just right! It has a smooth ride, is easy to maneuver, has a great sound system, good gas mileage and is very comfortable. We haven't had a minute's regret even when next to the CRV and Acura on the road. I thought it would pain my heart, but I LOVE this car. Way to go, Mazda!

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It sounds like it handles really well, and it's great that you're still getting good mileage even with the added weight of the scooter lift. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!
