2017 Acura Ilx problems

The Acura ILX is a compact car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by Honda under the Acura brand, based on the ninth-generation Civic sedan. The ILX replaced the Canadian market exclusive Acura CSX. The gasoline-electric hybrid version was Acura's first.

Overview

The concept version was unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, the production version was presented in the 2012 Chicago Auto Show. The ILX introduces a new design that Acura calls "aero-fused dynamics". Mass production commenced on April 23 at Honda's assembly facility in Greensburg, Indiana and U.S. sales began on May 22.

The ILX's body in white uses 59% high strength steel ranging from 440-980 MPa yield strength grades, aluminum is used for the hood and front bumper beam. Compared to the Civic, the ILX uses Acura's "Amplitude Reactive" dampers and a larger more rigid steering shaft for improved handling and ride quality characteristics.

Options are grouped into Premium and Technology packages and include leather upholstery, 17" alloy wheels, navigation system, premium audio system with SiriusXM satellite radio, and high intensity discharge headlamps. Both option packages include a multi-view rear backup camera with regular, wide-angle, and top-down modes.

For the 2014 model year the ILX came standard with 17-inch wheels, leather interior, heated front seats, an eight-way power driver's seat, tri-angle backup camera and audio subwoofer with Active Noise Cancellation.

For the 2015 model year, the ILX Hybrid was discontinued due to slow sales. Through May of 2014, only 2,660 Hybrid units were sold since its introduction.

POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-04-01
  • VIN: 19UDE2F36HA
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My 2017 Acura ILX makes a loud clunk, and shifts extremely hard when coming or coasting to a stop. 1-2 gear seems to be the only time this issue arises. This issues creates startling reaction from the driver due to the loud clunk and force of the shift in gears, as well as loss of confidence in the vehicles ability to safely come stop without issues. Reproducing the issue is difficult because the issue usually occurs in traffic in 1-2 gears and test driving it around the block is not sufficient enough to experience hard shift/clunk. I was told it may be the rear differential bushing. Once they checked that, they were able to rule out the possible bushing issue. There are no codes being shown, and no other issues present before or clunk/jamming of the gears. This issue began 4-5 months after purchasing the vehicle from A Honda/Acura Dealer Washington in Dec 2020

Negative 2017 Acura Ilx car reviews

  1. Ralph Kozey 2025-08-02

I purchased my car back in April of 2015. Although I had a minor issue with squeaky front brakes, which is a factory defect that Acura is aware of, I still believe it's a great car. Acura did not replace my brakes when I brought it in, but I understand they have their reasons. I was a bit disappointed, but I still think Acura is a great brand. I also noticed a few other things that could have been better, such as the rough ride over uneven pavement and potholes, the lack of a 40/60 rear fold, and the steering being a little numb. Additionally, there isn't too much headroom for tall drivers. However, for the price of $27k, you get a compact car that can go from 0-60 in less than 7 seconds, great fuel economy, decent handling, a sunroof, keyless entry, a dual clutch transmission, full LED headlights, adaptive cruise, a crush prevention system, auto dual climate, heated seats and mirrors, a back-up camera, and of course, the Acura badge. Overall, I think it's an enormous value and a great car for those who are looking for a compact car.

  2. Pietro Roob 2024-11-11

I am disappointed with my purchase of the 2017 ILX. The car's interior is minimalistic and lacks the electronics that I was expecting. Additionally, I experienced issues with the rear view mirror, radio, and headlights. I believe that Acura can do better and should improve the quality of their products.

  3. Orlo Upton 2024-11-05

I used to be a proud owner of the 2004 Acura TL and I absolutely loved that car. Recently, I purchased another Acura with the hope that it would bring me the same level of happiness. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the transmission. It makes a banging noise and feels like it's lunging forward when I let off the gas. I was told that this is normal and that I was confusing the car when I drove it. Despite this, I find the ride to be quite hard and noisy. It seems like they cut corners on this car and it shows, especially considering the high price tag. I am disappointed with my experience and have decided not to purchase another Acura in the future.

  4. Robin Corkery 2024-09-24

I have owned two previous Acura's and loved them. However, I had a negative experience with this particular vehicle. Unfortunately, I encountered 18 issues with it, and despite reaching out to the dealership and Acura customer service, I was unable to receive the assistance I needed. As a loyal customer, I was disappointed with the treatment I received. In the end, I decided to trade it in for a Lexus. Thank you for considering my experience.

  5. Roman Runolfsson 2024-09-17

I recently leased a 2017 Acura ILX, which is my seventh Acura. I have always loved my previous Acuras, but unfortunately, I am not enjoying this one as much. The new 8 gear transmission with two clutches is too complex and does not offer the performance that Acura claims. The car struggles to find the right gear when accelerating, and it lacks power from 10mph to 40mph. My previous car, a 2014 Acura ILX, was perfect, and I regret not keeping it. The muffler is also quite noisy, which is not to my liking. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the car will improve over time.

Positive 2017 Acura Ilx car reviews

  1. Tristian Grimes 2025-11-06

I used to own a manual stick shift 2003 Acura RSX Type S, which I absolutely loved. As a family man with two kids, I needed a small compact 4-door vehicle, and while I looked at the Civics and Accords, I found them to be quite bland and unexciting in terms of styling. I didn't want to blend in with the majority of cars on the road, driven by everyone from teeny boppers to grandparents and soccer moms. That's why I decided to go for the 2016 Acura ILX with premium/Aspec package. While it's not necessarily an upgrade from my RSX, the Dual Clutch mode is definitely a standout feature. It's very responsive and the gear transitions are smooth. However, I do find the rest of the car to be a bit lackluster. The gears are always shifting, which can be annoying when you need quick acceleration, and the steering doesn't provide much road feedback. Additionally, the car lacks the excitement and thrill that I was hoping for. The headroom is also quite cramped, which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. Overall, I think Acura has lost touch with its racing heritage. While I may pass this car on to my wife in a few years, I'll definitely be looking for a stick shift car for myself. If you enjoy a leisurely drive and want to look good while doing it, then this car is perfect for you. Just relax, chill, and cruise in style!

  2. Grant Carter 2025-10-27

I really love this car! It has everything I wanted for a great price. This is the perfect car for me since I am not searching for people's envy. In my opinion, this car has everything. It has great gas mileage (I am averaging 32/gallon) and a plethora of standard features, like resetting the gas odometer and mileage whenever I refuel. The 3 different backup camera viewing angles were very helpful when I needed to back into my garage. The leather seats are very comfortable, and the stereo with 7 speakers and sub-woofer, USB, Bluetooth, HDMI, and satellite radio keeps me going on my daily grind. It's a great value for my hard-earned cash. I would recommend this car to anybody that appreciates great value and reliability. However, if you are looking for a true luxury entry-level sedan, this is not it. As per the reviews, the interior is nice but not as luxurious as Mercedes or Audi. It does not drive with the peppiness that you get with Mercedes or Audi. I find the acceleration weak, but the thing is because this car is trying to save gas, so it keeps shifting below 2000rpm. You can do manual shifting if you are into burning up your gas and driving faster. Your neighbor is not going to be like, 'Oh my! You got a new Mercedes or Audi!' But you know what? I got a good price and great value for my car, so forget the neighbor...haha!

  3. Bryce Barrows 2025-10-24

This is a fantastic combination of luxury and economy. I was able to save $9,000 compared to the dealer's best offer on a comparable BMW 320i. The ILX is impressively quick, going from 0-60 mph in just 6.4 seconds (0.2 seconds faster than the BMW according to zeroto60times.com), while still achieving an impressive 36 mpg on the highway (the same as the BMW EPA estimate). After test driving both the BMW 320i and the X1, I found that the ILX's interior materials were only slightly inferior, and the noise and handling were just a little off. As someone who is very sensitive to squeaks and rattles, I was pleased to find that there were none. The 8-speed DCT is incredibly smooth and precise, and driving in sport mode is a game-changer. The shift points are at much higher revs and the engine responds much more quickly. This is actually my second Acura, and I drove the first one for nearly 200,000 miles without a single problem - all I did was change the fluids and bulbs. While I can't attest to the reliability of the ILX just yet, I'm betting it will be similarly phenomenal. The expert reviews on this car are all over the map, with some comparing it to a Toyota Corolla and others to a BMW 2 or 3 series. The problem is that it doesn't fit neatly into any one category. You really have to read between the lines.

  4. Deron Price 2025-10-04

Congratulations on your new ILX! It's great to hear that you're overall extremely pleased with it. The vehicle is certainly attractive to the eye with quality panel fit and finish and a stunning paint job. The dual clutch transmission is a large step above traditional automatics and has quick throttle response and incredibly nimble shifts. While the overall engine power leaves a little to be desired, at 201 HP it is quick off the line and peppy enough to put a smile on your face during your everyday commute. The car handles fine and sticks to the road as expected for the size and weight. The steering feel is light enough to make for easy everyday commutes, but sporty enough to provide decent road feedback when winding about on country roads. While the interior quality is OK, it's right on par for an entry-level luxury car. The ODMD head unit could use a refresher, but it's generally easy enough to navigate through after spending some time with the user manual out exploring all the system capabilities. Audio quality with the Premium system meets my expectations, with decent power and bass response. Imaging and dynamic range are better on this stock system than any other vehicle I've owned. The best thing is that it's a Honda, so reliability, resale value, and quality are something you don't have to worry about. It's the perfect car for a young professional looking to purchase an affordable, attractive, and fun-to-drive luxury vehicle.

  5. Rahul Cole 2025-09-17

I recently purchased this car to replace my 2001 Integra. While it is different from my previous car, which had a unique handling experience that is hard to come by these days, I still find this car to be a lot of fun to drive. It has a lot of horsepower for its size and handles extremely well. Even though it has electric steering, which I'm not a fan of, the feedback is good. This is my first automatic car in many decades of driving, but I have to say, I'm impressed. I recommend putting it in sport mode and hitting some winding roads - you won't regret it! It's been 7 months since I bought it and I haven't had a single problem with the vehicle. It handles well in the snow and on wet pavement, and is nimble and quick on dry pavement. I usually drive in comfort mode for my daily commute and it responds very well when I need to merge into traffic. While Consumer Reports rated the ride as poor, I personally think it's perfect for a sport sedan. I've hit a few very bad potholes with no serious side effects. The only minor complaints I have are that the armrests are too low and there is no dome light. Otherwise, it's an excellent car. Three years on, and it's still great. I've only needed to do oil changes and inspections so far, and it gets 32 mpg in mixed highway and city driving. I love it!
